rosa and -- i meant san jose. scattered showers in the forecast today, perhaps even thunderstorms. how long will this last? we'll look what you can expect saturday and sunday, coming up. we are following developing news this morning. oakland police are searching for the people responsible for an early morning shooting a little a hotel on enterprise and 85th. we are getting word that problems with the police radio system may have hindered the response. ktvu channel 2 reporter ali rasmus is live on the scene with more. hi, ali. >> reporter: hi, claudine. there are still a few police vehicles in front of this la quinta inn. i spoke with some of the workers and they tell me an hour ago investigators were still inside this building going through some of the evidence. the shooting happened on the third floor hallway around 3:30 this morning. there was a gathering or party in one of rooms, a confrontation broke out, and one man was shot, another

person was grazed by bullets. both went to the hospital with what we're told is non-life- threatening injuries. but when police arrived at the scene, several officers surrounded the hotel. they tried to set up a perimeter to make sure no one directly involved fled the scene, and a police sergeant says their radio system then stopped working properly. >> when we first arrived, our radios weren't working as well in that area, i'm not sure if it was connectivity issues but we couldn't stick to dispatch of used our can radios. >> but in order to do that, use the car radios instead, the sergeant says some of the officers had to leave their posts surrounding the building. there have been reported problems with opd police radio systems since earlier this year. but a month ago the it department had resolved the issues but as we just heard, it appears there's another problem. but at this point police say the problem is they have no suspects in custody, no

witnesses who want to give them any information or cooperate with them, and they also add that the surveillance video from the hallway inside the hotel did not give them a clear picture of anything. coming up in our next live report, we'll find out which radio system was not working properly and which area of oakland that's affecting this morning. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are also investigating another overnight shooting, one that left two people dead. that happened just before 1:00 this morning at 62nd avenue and hilton street. investigators say a man and woman were shot inside a car, both of them later died. now officers are looking for two men who may be responsible. no word this morning on any possible motive for the shooting. san francisco's longest serving elected official is leaving his post after more than 30 years on the job. sheriff michael hennessey will not seek re-election for a ninth term this november. earlier this month he was a finalist for the city's interim

mayor job, which was ultimately filled by ed lee. potential candidates for the jobs include supervisor ross and vicky hennessey. an effort in hercules heading for the june 7th ballot. we first brought you this story in a special report earlier this month. the petition so recall hercules mayor joanne ward and city councilman john keaney each have enough signatures. officials have now certified the recall petition. supporters of the recall say they hope to discuss the issue at the city council next meeting on tuesday. a san francisco police officer is recovering this morning after he was allegedly beaten by a teenager on a muni bus. on the 38th geary line on wednesday. police say the officer was responding to a brawl in the bus when a 17-year-old boy turned on him and repeatedly punched him. the officer was treated at a

hospital and remains off-duty while recovers. the teen was taken into custody by another officer on the scene and was charged with resisting an officer and causing serious injuries. just about an hour ago, bart service began at the new west dublin pleasanton station. the transit agency 44th station is located along interstate 580 and includes a bridge for people to walk over the freeway. the $106 million station is the first to be built on an existing line. it was designed to use congestion and parking problems at the original dublin pleasanton station. bart expects 4300 people to use the stop each day during the week. the chp is warning drivers to be careful. the roads are still wet this morning. we want to give you a live lock at highway 101 in marin. you can see what roads brought their head lights on but things seem to be moving smoothly. another round of rain is getting readies to move into the bay area and the dropping temperatures also causing some concern out there. the chp says it is working to

mark the roads where black ice is commonly found and is warning people to avoid bridges and areas with heavy rain runoff. >> bridges allow the cold air to be all around the road, so it cools the road surface faster on the dirt. stays warmer so it's less likely to form there. >> the chp says black ice is impossible to see but you will know it if you hit it and if you do, officers say don't overcorrect. should you steer straight or in the same direction you're sliding and avoid slamming the brakes or hitting the gas. over the past three days, more than 5 feet of snow has fallen in the sierra and while that might be good news for skiers and snowboarders, all the fresh snow is creating problems for drivers trying to make their way to the ski resorts for the holiday weekend. yesterday we caught up with some people trying to navigate interstate 80. >> couldn't believe it and said three-hour delay. >> were they telling the truth? yeah, pretty much. >> trying to be cautious, yeah.

we -- we don't have super-great traction and want to make sure that we're safe. >> right now chains are required on both interstate 80 and highway 50. another 8 inches of snow is expected in some spots in the sierra today, and up to a foot overnight. and the snow is affecting the roadways a little closer to home. this morning a section of highway 29 between napa and lake county is closed due to snow and snow related accidents. the california highway patrol says they hope to reopen the highway by noontime. until then, drivers are being advised to find alternate routes. the snow is also showing up in the south bay. the director of the observatory on mount hamilton sent ktvu some images of trucks clearing the roads to the summit yesterday. over the past couple days the top of mount hamilton has received more than an inch of snow. we just checked the caltrans website and the road up to mount hamilton is currently closed. we will continue to monitor the weather this morning, and you can always get the latest

one police officer was shot in the head and died a few hours later. 30 other officers were injured. police say the gun man was shot and killed. the body of a u.s. immigration customs and enforcement agent killed in mexico is back at home this morning. his remains arrived in his hometown of brownsville, texas yesterday. from there, a police escort led a process a funeral home. he was fatally shot in an ambush in central mexico this week. another u.s. agent was injured during that shooting. federal investigators say the attack may have been ordered by leaders of a violent mexican drug cartel. this morning, u.s. officials are demanding the release of four u.s. citizens whose yacht was hijacked by pirates. government officials say yesterday pirates hijacked a yacht in the indian ocean off the somali coast. the yacht was carrying a couple who for the past six years had been sailing around the world delivering bikes to churches

and schools in remote villages. this follows the 33-year sentence handed down on thursday to a pirate who kidnapped a captain of a u.s. merchantship. new this morning, from bahrain, the military is now being withdrawn from the streets of the capitol city of manama after two days of deadly force on protestors calling for government reforms. new video released overnight appears to show some of that violence but we warn you this may be disturbing to some viewers. >> as you saw, the protestors were marching when you heard the gunfire. it happened last friday and at least 50 people may have been hurt. bahrain is considered critical to u.s. security efforts in the middle east because it's home to the navy's fifth fleet. president obama is condemning that violence in a phone call with the king

yesterday, the president asked the monarch to hold those responsible for the violence accountable. the president said bahrain must respect the universal rights of its people and embrace meaningful reform. documents revealing why untucson firefighter refused to respond to last month's shoot that injured gabrielle giffords. firefighter mark ekstrom declined a call because he said he was distraught over the magnitude of how the shooting would affect the country. his engine company was called to deliver emergency supplies to the scene 90 minutes after the shooting. he resigned two days after the incident. two of giffords' interns are selling wristbands to remember a colleague killed in the shooting. the bands are inscribed with a peace and heart symbol followed by the word gabby. they go for $1 each. proceeds will go to a scholarship fund named after slain intern gabe zimmerman. bumper stick worst a similar

welcome back. good morning to you. a live look at i-80 this morning, where the sierra definitely catching some snow, but even sierra foothills! the stormy weather on the east coast caused frightening moments in air travel. officials at logan airport say two boston bound jetblue flights were struck by lightning last night. both jets managed to land safely but the smell of smoke was reported on one of the planes. no one was injured. the largest low budget airline is getting more expensive.

southwest is raising its fares by $10 for a round-trip ticket. the company says it needs the money to offset higher fuel costs. jet fuel prices have realize on by 50% in the past year. southwest spend more than $3 billion on fuel last year and this move is the latest in a series of price increases from major u.s. airlines. this morning finance chiefs are pressure china to except a deal on tracking economic imbalance. the group of 20 has been asked to come up with a list of indicators to measure the imbalance, but officials say china is resisting any possible solutions and has emerged as a country to convince. despite the opposition, a deal should be reached by the end of the day. a napa based bank will reopen after the holiday weekend under new ownership. the fdic closed charter oak bank yesterday. it's now the 21st bank to fail nationwide so far this year and the second in california. bank of marin will now assume all of the deposits and the two

charter oak bank branches will reopen tuesday as branches of the bank of marin. customers of charter oak bank can still access their money by using debit cards or writing checks. checks will be processed and loan considers should continue to make their payments as usual. at&t is trying to expand its wi-fi service in palo alto. the company wants to install two wi-fi antenna at a sixth story apartment building on university avenue. some residents say they're worried about possible health risks from the wi-fi antennas. at&t says antennas give off very little raid ace. a public hearing is scheduled for next wednesday. san francisco is facing a massive budget deficit but it's now getting ready to spend millions of dollars on bleach. the city's public utilities commission says it wants to spend it $14 million to buy 27 million pounds of bleach. the bleach would be used to help eliminate the rotten egg

a recurring problem at oakland police department. service yet again as police respond to a shooting at a hotel overnight. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. this morning, police are investigating two overnight shootings in oakland that left two people dead and two others injured. the first shooting happened just before 1:00 at 62nd avenue and hilton street. the second shooting happened two hours later and only about two miles away, at a la quinta hotel. that's where ali rasmus is now, and we thought this police radio problem was fixed but maybe not, right? >> reporter: well, we're going to get into that in a minute. first i want to show you four ours after the shooting happened at this hotel, there's still a police presence here just beyond that airport bus shuttle. there's a police vehicle, another police vehicle here in the park lot. as officers wrap up their

were told to stop using the radio system that usually covers the east oakland area because of the problems with it. they're now using radio systems that cover other parts of the city to communicate this morning. problems with opd police radio system came to light earlier this year. a few weeks after that, the city of oakland's it department said it fixed the problem but as you just heard, they had another problem here again at the scene of the shooting this morning. now, the sergeant out here tells me that they have hit a roadblock in their investigation of this shooting at this hotel. they said they have no suspects in custody, no witnesses that want to cooperate with them or give them any information, and unfortunately, the hotels surveillance video camera did not give this. a clear picture of what happened. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police have made an arrest in the killing of an artist. it's a story we first told you about last weekend on mornings on 2. the suspect is the victim's roommate. 24-year-old waheed kesmatyer is

in jail on unrelated charges. the body of 67-year-old jack baker was discovered last week inside his nob hill home. police say he was killed days before being discovered. >> we believe it was probably around a week prior to the location of his body, maybe a little less than that. the we believe the last time -- >> police say baker was strangled and beaten. a motive is still unclear. the suspect is expected to be transported to san francisco in the coming days. this morning lafayette police are searching for two men suspected of robbing a jewelry store yesterday on the 3500 block of mount diablo boulevard. police say the owner was in the become of the sore he he appeared people smashing the display cases. he came out with a gun and shot at the three men, injuring one of them. all three took off but police say the injured man checked into a berkeley hospital later that same day. they're still looking for the other two suspects. america's most wanted is taking on a local case tonight. shawn michael sullivan is currently on the u.s. marshal's

15 most wanted list. oakland police say he shot two men over an outstanding gambling debt last friday or last february, rather. one man died and the other was left paralyzed. the commander of the contra costa drug task force arrested for dealing narcotics is taking responsibility for the crimes he is accused of doing. prosecutors charge normal wielsch and christopher butler with 28 felonies yesterday. the two are accused of selling drugs taken from an evidence room. after the court hearing, wielsch's tern said his client has admitted to some illegal wrongdoing. but he added his client's crime should not reflect poorly on his colleagues. >> this is an individual situation. it does not affect other officers at all. i mean, i understand that a lot of officers will be upset and it will send ripples through the law enforcement community. the best thing i can say to them is, he stepped up. >> public defender in contra costa county said the arrests of wielsch and butler are forcing them to reexamine their

cases. the unover the barry bonds steroid case made a surprise request just four weeks before the start of the trial. the judge asked both sides yesterday to try and reach a plea agreement and avoid a trial. prosecutors agreed to talk with bonds' lawyers. the attorney says he is open to that discussion. >> when a judge suggests that the parties ought to talk, that's something that needs to be accorded great respect. so we will respectfully talk about that as the judge asks us to do. >> however, he said he believes this case is going to end up going to trial. bonds is expected to plead not guilty when he is a rind an march 1. the trial is scheduled to start on march 21st. the wet weather is creating dangerous conditions for drivers but there might be a silver lining to all this rain. yesterday we were along highway 17, where a number of accidents delayed traffic for over an hour as people headed out of town for the long weekend. highway patrol says it's best to stay off the roads during

during friday's commute. the debris was found near the west oakland station around 5:30 last night. officials shut down service into san francisco while investigators removed the metal. but about a half hour later, they decided to shut down service in both directions. >> the train passed through, we immediately decided we need to inspect -- and we were comfortable enough in continuing service so shut down the track in both directions. >> investigators have determined the metal did not fall off a train but are still not sure where it did come from. all trains are now operating on time. let's check in on your traffic now. we want to give you a live look at the toll plaza where the roads are wet. we have been seeing reports around the bay area of spinouts and things like that. also some pothole problems in dublin. is just be careful. there are events going on this weekend, the big thest one the chinese new year parade. right now preparations are underway. this is the largest chinese new year parade outside of asia,

many across the nation continue to focus on wisconsin as massive employee union protests are expected to continue today and the new demonstrations could be the largest yet. adam shapiro joins us live from madison with the latest on the growing unrest. adam. >> reporter: that's correct. >> adam, i've got to ask you, compared to what you've seen in the previous days, going into these new demonstrations, what exactly are you expecting in regards to rhetoric? will it be the same or slightly different? >> reporter: that's a very good question, and we are expecting two demonstrations today. i want to show you the live statehouse, i think you're showing video now but come back live and look at what is happening here. you see different people gathering. there are the protestors who have been here all week wrong, and now you have the protestors, the people who are opposed to the efforts by the

governor here in wisconsin to take away collective bargaining rights and also to require people who are members of different unions that govern public employees toe pay more for their pensions and health care. you can see here supporters of governor walker, they're going to be here today. show that video we shot from yesterday. there were from 35,000 to 45,000 people here, according to the capitol police here in madison, wisconsin. so they're keeping both sides separated today because they are expecting more than the 35 to 45,000 people. >> adam, what is happening out there in wisconsin, is there any relations, should we be concerned or have any impact here in california? >> reporter: i'm not sure if it would have an impact, but certainly california, your governor jerry brown is watching this the way the ohio governors, new york, states that have very large budget deficits.

and the short-term and long- term. because ohio, indiana, they're looking at doing the same kind of things to restrict the collective bargaining rights of public sector employees. now, in california, that might be a little more difficult. in places like new york, it might be more difficult where you have democratic governors and you have large union support. but here in the midwest they have drawn the battle line and the governor yesterday was not willing to compromise. he is holding out just as those who are supporting the labor movement here are holding out. >> and money a key issue in the golden state. is money the key issue in wisconsin? >> reporter: it depends who you ask. the governor said it is a key issues because in the short- term on june 30th the fiscal year with end with a $137 million budget shortfall. in the long-term, over the next two years, it's gun to be at $3.6 short offall. that's why the governor is pushing for these measures. on the other hand what the labor union is saying we'll compromise with you and we will

with what led up to the shooting and the radio problems creating more difficulties for officers. good morning, ali. >> reporter: good morning, claudine about 20 men's ago, police finished checking evidence for their investigation of this shooting. it happened on the third floor of this la quinta hotel. investigators tell me the crime scene spans the entire length of the hallway on the third floor. that's because several shots were fired, and according to one investigators there were pieces of evidence across the hallway. it happened at 3:30 this morning. and police say there was a party or gathering in one of rooms when a confrontation broke out. one man was shot, another grized bisome of the bullets. the men went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. now, while this was happening there were several other guests staying in this hotel at the same time. i spoke with the woman staying on the third floor who says some of the gunshots trigger the sprinkler system in the hallway, and that flooded part of her room. when police arrived at the scene they tried to surround

the building and set. a perimeter, and that's when the handheld radio system they were working stopped working properly. and some of the officers were unable to communicate with dispatchers. >> the officers were forced to use our car radios, which worked better and helped us communicate with our dispatch, which helped coordinate the scene there. >> to do that you had toe leave your posts surrounding the building? >> some people did, yes. >> the sergeant says a short time after that, officers were told to stop using the radio system, that normally covers the east oakland area, because of the problems with it this morning. they're now using radio systems that typically cover other parts of the city to communicate. problems with opd's police radio system came to light earlier this year, then the it department said it had identified and fixed the problem. but seems like the problem has resurfaced again this morning. coming up in our next live report we'll hear center some of the guests who were staying

in the hotel when the shooting happened, when they heard the commotion. that's coming up in about a half hour. reporting live, ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. police also responded to another shooting overnight that left two people dead. that happened just before 1:00 this morning on 62nd avenue. a man and woman were shot inside a car and both later died. now officers are looking for two men who may be responsible. no word on any possible motive for that shooting. overnight the republican controlled house bassed a spending bill that makes $60 billion in cuts. the bill passed early this morning, marginally along party lines. several g.o.p. amend. make it unlikely democrats in the senate will go along with the plan. president obama has also promised to veto the g.o.p. bill because of those amendments. and those amendments include loosening federal regulations on greenhouse gas polluters, coal companies and privately

owned colleges. another amendment would cut federal funding to planned parenthood. the plan needs for signed by the president by march 4th to prevent a government shutdown. about two hours ago, the west dublin pleasanton bart station began operating social security for the first time on interstate 580 and does include a bridge for people to walk over the freeway. the station is the first to be built on an existing line. it was designed to east congestion at the original station. bart expects 4300 people to use the station every day during the week. this morning bart officials are trying to determine how three pieces of metal got ton on a track and shut down service. around 5:30 last night, the scraps were found near the west oakland station. officials stopped service into san francisco while investigators removed the metal. then just about a hal hour later decided to shut down service in both directions. >> the train passed through.

we immediately decided we need to inspect and we want comfortable enough in continuing service which is why we shut down the track in both directions. >> investigators have determined the metal did not fall off a train but intent to know where it came from. all trains are now operating on time. the wet weather is creating dangerous conditions for drivers. but officials say there might be a bright side to all of this rain. yesterday we were out on highway 17, where you're looking at just one of a number of accidents that delayed traffic for over an hour. people headed out of town for that long weekend. the chp says it is best to stay off the roads during the rain, but if you have to drive, use caution. >> speed with the rain, with the wet roadway, really contributes to the accidents. and the slower you go, the safer it is. >> now for the good news, officials say water supplies are up and continuing to rise. the river in downtown san jose

is actually overflowing its banks in some areas. there's more rain to come with forecasters and predicting scattered showers and possible thunderstorms for today. as the bay area preparation for the new round of rain, dropping temperatures are creating concern about black ice. the highway patrol says it's, twoing to mark the roads where black ice is commonly found and is warning people to avoid bridges and areas with heavy rain runoff. >> bridges allow cold air to be all around the road, below and above, so it cools the road surface faster on the dirt, stays warmer so likely to form there. >> highway patrol says black ice is not possible see see but you know if you hit it. if you do, do not overcorrect, you should steer straight or in the same direction you are sliding. you should also avoid slamming on the brakes or hitting the gas. this morning we've been showing you pictures of the sierra, where more than 5 feet of snow has fall intent last three days. it may not be great news for

drivers. latisha has conditions this morning. she is in colfax on highway 80. how are the roads out there? >> reporter: good morning, claudine! right now the roads are not too bad. caltrans is doing a great job keeping them clear you can sri the town of colfax is covered in snow. this is about 2400 feet elevation. we started seeing snow as low as 1300 feet in the town of auburn, but definitely hundreds and hundreds of people making their way on 80 now to the sierra. but it's pretty smooth traveling and only took us about an hour from sacramento to get to colfax. there are patches of ice on the roads so you definitely want to watch tout for that. the highway patrol says people are driving way too fast for these conditions and chains are being required, so once you have those chains on, you really can't go any faster than about 30 miles an hour. but i can't say that enough about caltrans, they're doing such a great job.

me the officers hand-held radio system stopped working properly. and the officers couldn't communicate with each other or with dispatchers. >> the officers were forced to use their car radios, which worked a little better and helped us communicate with our dispatch, which helped coordinate the scene there. >> you had to leave your posts, correct? >> some people did, yes. >> the sergeant says the short time after that, officers were told to stop using the radio system that usually covers the east oak lands area because of problems with it. they're now using radio systems that cover other parts of the city to communicate this morning. problems with opd's system came to light this year. the city it department had said it had identified and fixed the problem, but as you just heard it appears part of that problem was surfaced this morning. the sergeant says when it comes to their investigation of this shooting at the la quinta, they've hilde a road block in their investigation. he says there are no suspects

in custody, they have not been able to talk to any witnesses willing to cooperate with them, and the sergeant says the surveillance video from the hallway inside the hotel where the shooting happened didn't give this. a clear picture of what happened. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. investigation is underway into that double homicide this morning. that happened just before 1:00 at 62nd eve in hill stop street. investigators say a man and a woman were shot inside a car and both later died. now officers are looking for two men who may be responsible. at this point there's no word on any possible motive for the shooting. we're following developing news from the arabian sea. government officials say somali pirates hijacked a yacht with four americans onboard. it happened on friday off the coast of somalia. a spokesman for the u.s. embassy in kenya says u.s. agencies are monitoring the situation and considering all options and possible responses. the hijacked yacht is believed

to be owned by jean and scott adam, a couple from southern california that had been sailing around the world since 2004. back at home, the wet weather is making it tough for drivers and the chp is warning drivers to slow down. yesterday we want to show you pictures from highway 17, where a number of accidents delayed traffic for over an hour. the chp says really if you can, just stay off the roads during the rain. but if you have to go out and get on the roads, just slow down. the chp says high speed and the wet roadways cause most accidents, and the slower you go, the safer you'll be. over the past three days, more than 5 feet of snow has fall on in the sierra. and while that might be good news for skiers and snow snowboarders, there are problems on the roads. yesterday we caught up with some people trying to navigate on interstate 80. >> couldn't believe the reports and said three-hour delay. >> were they telling the truth? >> yes, pretty much.

stabbed and strangled. the suspect still needs to be extradited to san francisco. in oakland homicide suspect on the u.s. marshal's 15 most wanted list has landed himself on america's most wanted. oakland police say shawn michael sullivan shot two men over an outstanding gambling debt. that happened happened on november 4th. one man was killed, another left paralyzed. the episode airs tonight at 9:00, right here on ktvu. u.s. marshals have caught another person of interest in a separate oakland homicide. police called terrell scott a person of interest in the november 5th shooting death of a man on el paseo drive. he was arrested after a brief chase on foot. scott is now at the alameda county jail. the commander of the contra costa county drug task force arrested for dealing narcotics is now taking responsibility for the crimes he's accused of doing. prosecutors charged normal

memo in in it he did not indicate what his next move will be. the sheriff was a finalist for san francisco's one-year mayor appointment that ultimately went to ed lee. the judge presiding in the barry bonds steroids case made a surprise request. the judge asked both sides yesterday to try to reach a plea agreement and avoid a trial. prosecutors say they're going to discuss a possible deal with bonds' lawyers and the attorney says he is open to that discussion. >> when a judge suggests that the party ought to talk, that's something that needs to be afforded great respect. so we will respectfully talk about that as the judge asked us to do. >> he added he does believe the case will end up in going to trial. bonds is expected to plead not guilty. the trial is set to start on march 21st. a new state bill could change who is in charge of california's high speed rail
