. the search for two teen boys ends in tragedy. >> a small church and it's city respond in a big way to a shooting that happened a year ago. >> it almost looks like mount shasta but it's in the east bay. new pictures of mount diablo covered with snow. >> this is ktvu channel 2news at five. >> i'm heather holmes. less than 30 minutes ago sheriff's officials confirmed that the tragic end to a lastings trip during a storm yesterday. paul chambers was at that news conference where it was said that search crews found the

bodies of two missing teens. >> reporter: it was a joint press conference between walnut creek and contra costa. we found information about the two teens. we found they were expected to be home yesterday and they were reported missing just after midnight by their parents. two walnut creek families are mourning the loss of loved ones. this video shows where a 17 -year-old and 16-year-old decided to hop in a raft and ride it down walnut creek. >> they learned from friends their son had gone rafting another friend. probably around two in the afternoon on saturday. >> reporter: officers say the boys asked a friend to pick them up when they didn't show up their parents reported them missing. at daybreak on sunday search and rescue started looking for them. first thing they found was this raft they were in, crews pulled it out of the creek. >> act 11:30 a.m.

the body of matt miller was found. he was found in the creek. >> reporter: almost two hours later we were above the scene as crews found the body of the second teen between where the raft was found and the first teen's body. >> we don't expect foul play, it's just a tragic incident and our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends. >> reporter: the sheriff's office said they will continue the investigation. i talked to a friend of both of them. they said they planned to go in this water. the water isn't supposed to be -- there are danger signs up and around and a fence. . we will stay on this. live in concord, ktvu channel 2news. >> no doubt that water was very cold. it was a chilly start around the bay area and will be cold again tonight. mark as the numbers. he is in the weather center. >> reporter: the coldest location in the lower 30s. right now on the live storm tracker 2 not a lot show you.

we could have a few sprinkles. enough instability with the cloud build ups and a possibility of just a few sprinkles. as we take a look right now at some of the current numbers with some of the rainfall to the always, here we go. normally in santa rose a san jose and the normal values for this day. look what happened to the recent rainfall over the past few days. san francisco -- santa rosa 11% of normal, san francisco 109, san jose improving but 85% of average, so far the season, at least with the rainfall calendar. here is the forecast. 6:00 partly cloudy skies, temperatures mainly in the mid40s as we head to the 8:00 hour. we are dropping to the lower 40s, scattered clouds and then by 10:00 it'll be cold with most neighborhoods on either side of 40 degrees. here say look at the projected lows, first thing tomorrow. the lower 30s for santa rosa, livermore 31. we could be talking about

patchy frost and the increase in the high clouds, they are coming from this system up to  the north and west. ly have the forecast track and depending where it goes it could impact the forecast in terms of rain chances. >> and speaking of cold residents in the east bay woke up to see a blanket of fresh snow on mount di ablo. today was clear enough to really see it. at elevation of 3800 feet it is well above yesterday's snow level. the sierra has a lot of fresh snow for this busy president day's weekend. it came from the latest in a string of powerful winter storms. the alpine ski resort just north of lake tahoe is reporting as much as nine feet of snow. most other resorts reporting from four to seven feet of new snow. the high way patrol said road conditions look good as you can see in this picture. there are no chain requirements or traffic restrictions. >> a san bruno man under

arrest accused of driving drunk and killing a pedestrian in pacifica. the 57-year-old allegedly drove off after striking the pedestrian just after 1:30 this morning on skyline drive. police say he later returned to the scene and told officers he had struck a person walking in the roadway. the identity of the victim who is believed to be a man in his 30s hasn't been released. in santa rosa the highway patrol is investigating a deadly crash. it happened just before 5:00 this morning on north bound 101 near the todd road exit. the chp said a nissan suv drifted off the highway and crashed into a tree. one man inside that suv decide at scene. they said fog may have contributed to the accident. for the second time in three days visitors found flares on the beach and the bomb squad had to blow them up. it was friday when another visitor found some marine f

lares. they were detonated inside a hole in the sand. today's incident closed down the beach from about 10:45 to a little after one this afternoon. according to the park police they are found in the area a couple times a year. officers remind anyone who comes across any suspicious items not to pick them up but to tell rangers. >> church goers in richmond gathered this sunday for another day of prayer and at one particular church to look back at a shocking crime. gun men opened fire inside their church. john is in richmond to tell us how things have changed there in the last year. >> reporter: it was just over a year ago that gun fired erupted inside this church. the reaction has meatless streets safer. the early sunday service at richmond church was filled with joy and hope. a far cry from valentine's day last year when two gun men

opened fire injuring two brothers. that attack spawned a huge effort from hundred of church leaders and other residents. >> it has been a great difference. they have -- the people have found out that god is real. >> reporter: last year there were 21 homicides in richmond. less than half the previous year. while last january there were five killings, in the first month and a half of this year there has been only one. >> a lot of people together and it actually -- inner encouraged the relationships here with the police department and the community and i think -- we are all working together to get this crime problem solved. >> reporter: this young man said the streets feel safer. >> it does feel better on the streets. just -- you approach the streets differently. you know what i mean? it's kind of like more respect going around. >> reporter: at independent community church pastor raymond landry has been helping lead the struggle to end crime and violence. >> we don't see as many drug dealers on the corner anymore.

we don't hear as many shots fired. much safer area to be in. >> reporter: the pastor credits the faith community's efforts but said the drop in crime comes also because of strong city leadership, community policing and several group that offer programs for young people. live in richmond, ktvu channel 2news. >> pg&e may have violated federal regulations when it spiked pressure in the san bruno pipeline. according to a report officials said the spikes were illegal and that the utility should have inspected for damage afterward. they have admitted to spiking the pipeline twice in 2003 and 2008. it said that temporary pressure increases were safe and legal. experts suspect a bad weld ruptured caused september's deadly explosion. a newly appointed commissioner for the utilities commission is on a so-called

listening tour. he started his tour friday. so far he has met with customers in san francisco, san diego. according to the cpuc he is talking to diverse grouping including low income customers, organizers, local ghosts technology leaders. his tour will continue through april. >> there is new information out today on just what caused a sewage spill in redwood. the report is that it was a break down in a pump control system that caused the spill. more than 94,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the redwood shores lagoon. it forced redwood city to spend $250,000 to clean up the sewage. they are hiring an engineering firm to investigate why it broke down. if you filled up lately you probably noticed the price of gas continues to rise. according to a new survey released today it's partly because of events in the middle

east and north african. the average cost for a gallon of regular is up five cents in the last two weeks. just $3.18. that's 55-cent a gallon more than just a year ago. the highest average price is in san francisco where a gallon of regular is $3.62. it's $3.57 in oakland and san jose. >> solano wants to start paying employers to hire more people. they have announced a new program called create jobs. under the plan the county will pay employers if they hire new employees for new jobs. they must be at least 20 hours a week. the county will play employers up to 80% of wage costs, up to $16 an hour. the create jobs program is being funded by both the federal and state cal works programs. here it is. in the middle of winter unlikely location for wildfires. where crews battling fierce blazes. also what went wrong with a

. firefighters have contained dozens of wildfire across maryland. the wind fueled brush fires forced evacuations in widespread power outages. no daunts have been reported. several homes, businesses and other structures near washington dc were damaged. firefighters say the strong winds and dry conditions made the fires tough to put out. >> a delta pilot had to make an emergency land when the engine started to fall apart. the pilot turned around shortly after takeoff. he landed safely but not before pieces of engine fell onto a

road. the faa called it a contained engine failure. it's actually less dangerous than what parts go through the cover of the engine. the passengers were put onto other flights. >> cold weather didn't slow down union protesters in wisconsin. they demonstrated again inside the capitol. it was the 6th day of protests, against a bill that would strip public employees of their collective baring rights. state workers would also have to pay more in medical and retirement costs. wisconsin governor said he has no intention of giving in. >> i think it's realistic that we need to make sure as loud as their voices we don't let them overpower the voices of the taxpayers. i was elected to represent and get the job done which is balancing the budget. >> reporter: the 14 democrats

who left in protest are still in nearby illinois. the governor called them obstructionists and the majority leader threatened to convene without them on tuesday. there are reports also tonight that a local doctor handed out medical notes to some of the protesters. the family doctor reportedly handed out medical excuses yesterday. critics say doing that without exams is fraud. he said he did it for protester who appeared to have stress. >> the battle over the budget is getting close to a deadline. the united states runs out of carbon march 4th. if there is no budget in place the government just may have to shut down. > >> reporter: the house stayed up late and passed their bill. now it's up to the senate and sounds like both sides may be ready to make a deal with one saying just be careful what you cut.

>> the bottom line is we all want cuts. we can find a compromise. we can make serious cuts in the government with wasteful programs, without going out the heart of education, funding, without cutting border security. >> reporter: a republican the chairman of the budget committee down in the house said today one way the gop may be willing to compromise is with a short one or two week extension of the current budget but that he is only on board with that if spending cuts are attached. a republican senator said he knows democrats will resist deep cuts but they would be crazy not to make a deal. >> if you deny the american people what they know to be true, is that we can't continue living beyond our means and that we are getting ready to collapse in terms of the financial financing of our debt, then it is ridiculous to say that the children in washington can't come together and cut some spending. >> reporter: that march 4th deadline is just 12 day away.

the senate won't be making any decisions about shut downs or compromises or anything else until next week because they are off this week. in washington, fox news. >> the proposed budget includes about $1.5 billion less in federal funding for california impacting many programs including at least $125 million in reductions for education. proposed cuts to head start would eliminate about 14,000 slots for low income children. university of california students would take a nearly 45 million-dollar hit from reductions in pell grants and it would cut 15 million partial dollars from the trust. spend. >> many places around the bay area will be closed tomorrow for the president's day holiday. federal, county and state offices will all be closed. the same for banks, post offices and public schools. if you are trying to get around

supporters attacked mourners attending another funeral for protesters. the shooting killed more than a dozen people. this comes just one day after security forces opened fire at a funeral killing 15. about 200 people have died in that country since demonstrations started last week. >> what's worrying is the government seems to be purposefully using live ammunition in some cases heavy weapons to attack protesters. >> reporter: in yem en protesters taking to the streets for the 11th straight day demanding the ouster of the country's president. he is now offering to oversee a dialogue. many angry demonstrators say that's not enough. >> we want change. we want to topple the corrupt

regime. >> reporter: hundreds of doctors and nurses joining the protest calling for the health minister to stop down. they are now looking at offers from the government to begin talks after deadly confrontations of sharply divided the nation. in moracco about 2,000 marched demanding greater democracy. the ambassador to the united nations said washington is urging leaders to embrace the demands for democracy. >> today's the secretary of state praised efforts in the mideast but expressed concern about the instability. >> the most progress that can be made on behalf of human beings anywhere is when those individuals are elm powered, when they have government that are responding president that's what we want to see. at the same time we recognize that this process be hijacked by both outside and inside

elements with in any country. >> reporter: she called for immediate reforms in behrain where thousands spending the night in the capitol's square. it's vital to united states interests, the 5th fleet is based there and about 40% of the world's oils practices through the gulf. in other news, off the coast of somalia the associated press is saying a war ship is shadowing a hijacked yacht. the yacht quest is carrying four americans, a couple from southern california and two people from seattle. officials say the yacht is heading closer to northern samalia a known haven for pirates. in southern thailand more than a dozen people were injured in back to back attacks. suspected muslim insurgents detonated a car bomb and opened a fire on a restaurant. both attacks happened late last

night and a muslim province. thailand is a largely buddhist country. officials say two female workers were wounded in the restaurant shooting. it was the second explosion in southern thailand in a week. in germany the chancellor's party suffered a crushing defeat in the state election. the party has been in power for ten years. her christian democrats won less than 22% of sunday's vote. that's down from 42% just three years ago. the rival social democrats grabbed 48%. the election is seen as a test for her conservatives as a series of seven such votes take place. >> worry about egypt's shaky political climate isn't keeping tourists out. popular visitor spots opening after days of being closed. the museum said sight seers

allen temple. >> the commitment to motivate african american students to earn a university degree is stronger than ever. >> reporter: they are counseling parents and students and showing them the way to financial aid. csu los angeles president spoke today and said the faith based community is a good place to get the message out. >> we want to try to find ways to encourage them, take courses. >> reporter: they are reaching out to students in middle as well as high school because they believe preparing for college has to start early there. is talk of advanced placement courses and lots of inge, math and science. >> i fought the message, my mom works at cal state east bay. i have been looking at colleges for a little while. >> it's great in high school but if you go even higher you can achieve more goals and just be more successful in life.

>> reporter: this outreach at a time when the state higher education system is under the financial gun and turning array many students. >> they are suffering financially but i think the fact they continue to have this relationship shows their commitment to working with the kids and i think it's important that we open the doors and think of creative ways to make sure they are in school. >> reporter: the super sunday program seems to be working. the number of african american students enrolling here in haywood has been growing. jim vargas. >> a southern california school district is using gps devices to try to stop truant students. they are giving those devices to 7th and 8th grade students with more than three unexcused absences. they get an automated phone call every day reminding them in the to be late. they are also required to enter a code that tracks their location. in exchange for their participation they won't be

punished for their previous truancies. the number of charter school conversions on the rise. there were 16 statewide last year. according to the california charter school association more traditional schools looking to operate as charters because they can get huge increases in funding flexibility in how they use. they say all students enrolled in a charter means a funding loss for public. >> new study by suggests tobacco use is prevalent in tv shows aimed at children and teens. they say they found examples of smoking in 40% of the popular shows they watched over a three month period. it was most there in programs like family guy, the simpson, gossip girl and america's next top model. >> we are very concerned about the exposure that kid's have to tobacco because it sets them on a course to be smokers later.

>> the group said past research shows a link between the number of television hours watched and smoking among young people. speaking of help for young people we know a marathon run a hard event. a man is going to do something even more demanding action he plans to run two marathons a day for 75 days straight. >> i took a run with dean this morning in marin. he is something of a legend among extreme athletes. he has run across the south pole across the sahara. friday he plans to run across the country from anaheim to new york city. >> we have an epidemic of ebesity and we need to change it. ott you future. >> reporter: he says he will run about 50-mile aces a day. it's all to raise awareness for

clayton road. witnesses say he was standing on the center median and stepped out into traffic. the driver of the vehicle was a 51-year-old woman from concord. an investigation indicates she was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. search crews on mount shafta found a missing snow boarder dead. the body was found just outside the boundary of the ski park. the 23-year-old last called his family on thursday and said he was going for one more run. an autopsy will be done. about 100 people joined in the search including teams from here in the bay area. the area had avalanche conditions and two feet of fresh snow. >> the american red cross is kicking off a blood drive to help other blood centers around the country hit hard by severe weather. donor can head to the center in san jose. they will be well cupping them at 8:00 a.m.

. when a service member heads off to war they leave family, friends and often their pets. as elizabeth reports one agency is stepping up to make sure the pets are well taken care of. >> i promise to take care of britney's dog. >> reporter: she is promising to take care of his first puppy. but it isn't his dog. it belongs to an active duty soldier heading overseas. >> my son came forward and said i want to be responsible for this. >> reporter: his sisters also helping with another dog, drake. after a year the dogs will go back to their owner britney, a service woman with the army national guard. >> i'm not stressing about them because i know they are in good hands. >> reporter: in the hands of volunteers with the guardian

angel for soldiers pets. the national nonprofit launched in 2005 and finds foster homes for pets when their parents are fighting overseas. today more than 230 military pets in temporary homes just like this one. there is more than 2500 family who are registered and willing to foster. >> i was at the park and was missing you. >> reporter: it's not just the soldier who benefits. >> i'm happy to help out a soldier because i know how lonely he are. >> she will be fighting for us and made me want to help her because she is putting her life for us. >> it made me feel nice that she is -- letting us take care of her dogs while she is gone. >> reporter: as hard as it'll be to say good-bye they will be the first to welcome britney back to the states after leaving an imprint on young lives a little closer to home. >> can you imagine how much more difficult it would be if you came back and your pets

were gone because you couldn't find a home for them? there is so much comfort that will be offered to britney when she comes back. >> what a nice idea. >> it was finally a nice day to take the dog out for a walk today. finally dry weather out there, much of the bay area today. >> that's right. today was the day to be outside with the most of the rain clouds moving out. we had a few leftover sprinkles but today and much improved conditions at least compared to yesterday's cold, damp rain that lasted pretty much all day long. this was the scene today looking out as you can see beautiful shots here from news chopper two moving across the bay and there you can pick out the bay bridge. just a few extra clouds with partly to maybe even mostly cloudy skies, that's what we had a few sprinkles there. this was the scene at the bay bridge and not at the golden gate. looks just great out there with just dry continues and in fact

temperatures warmed up. yesterday we had the 40 a, today most neighborhoods in the lower 50s. if are you driving by the mountains still -- dusting of snow from yesterday's rain and snow across the good portion of the bay area. for tonight partly cloudy and chilly. tomorrow partly to mostly cloudy, the forecast, cool showers could be pushing back in. here we go at satellite and radar. the storms moving you. you can see that circulation. here we go with that batch of high clouds this afternoon. this is what i'm watching as we head into monday. there is the associated clouds, today we had partly cloudy as high pressure returned. as we take this into monday look what happens. this area of low pressure moves in from the north. it'll generate more cloud and the possibility of, chance of a few scattered rain showers, looks like most of the rainfall remains out here in the pacific. here is the rainfall forecast model tonight. pretty much now at five not showing you to much. even at 10:00 maybe a few leftover sprinkles.

they always fear the wreck known as the big one. today it was on lap 29. waltrip into the back of brian, that's what happened. some of the series major names were victims action including jeff gordon and johnson, all said 14 cars damaged or forced out of the race. three of the hour hendrick motor cars involved. the new cars and surface at daytona made for two man drafting teams as drivers paired up on the fly. they got tangled up again. smith the guy who ends upsideways and down on the dalles, boyer and newman involved. that forced a green checker situation in the first lap. newman got tangled up again -- any thoughts earnhardt had of winning were gone. he was 24th. the war of attrition was won by baine. he holds off edwards, as he crossed the finish line. he screamed are you kidding me?

no kidding about it. it was also a great story for the car owners . the wood brothers one ofnascar's original teams. he will go on a tour this week including tuesday in san francisco. >> you know it's insane because we were kidding around, did you bring enough clothes to go if you won, i was like sure, i got this, i got two t-shirts and i thought it was a joke. here we are, i guess i better call someone that can make a suit and get clothes down here for me. i'm picky soy don't know if i can just call anybody. i never expected to be here and i still don't think it's real. sorry if i'm bouncing around but i'm just figuring i can just do whatever i want because it's just a dream any way. >> women's basketball team hoping to lay a trap for stanford. a big crowd hoping to see the cardinal handed it's first conference loss of the season.

stanford was playing without an injured player but her little sister stepped up. she was a put back for two of her 18 points. >> how in the --. >> the bruins up to staying stanford for a half. they were tied at 28 at half time. stanford was to much for the bruins in the second half. more depth for the cardinal -- stanford in front by ten. peterson always a contributor. peterson with a move inside. she had 13. it was the younger who was the story in this one. she takes a pass for go morin side, plus the foul. stanford stay ace step above handing the bruins their only two conference losses this year, 67-53 the final. stanford 24-2 overall.

15-0 in the conference. no the skies cleared in los angeles for the final round of the northern trust tournament. it started out ace battle between the seasoned fred couples and the 29-year-old aaron battingly. couples started out on fire with this chip on the second. then he was tied for the lead. then on the third, couples in front. he makes his third straight birdie. he has a one stroke lead. couples working to be the story of the young golf season. couples got into trouble off the t. barely got this out out of the tall grass. he got a double bogie. as couples was fading on the 7th hole making a move, makes a long birdie putt, another veteran, singh made a run for a while. bird "on the 8th. he shot a 69 but it was only

good enough for second place. taking a double bogie on number 12. he provided a little drama and then dropped. he goes onto close out with a 69, one wins for the third time but the first time in four years. singh took a one stroke lead in to the final round of the thailand tournament. one stroke back and wii made a move early. she chips in for birdie and has a share of the lead. singh answers, draining a birdie putt on that same first hole. it was the beginning of very good things for singh who went onto win by five strokes. the first on the tour this year. still to come tonight on sports wrap the sacramento kings could have a new home as soon as next basketball season. another look at what turned out to be a popular all-star skills night. we will be right back.
