funston had to be evacuated today after visitors discovered a box of flairs and the bomb squad was called in to detonate them. those flairs were detonated inside a hole in the sand. today's incident closed down the beach from around 10:45 to 1:15. according to park police, flairs are found in the area a couple of times a year. heavy fog may have played a role in a single car crash that killed a man on northbound highway 101 in santa rosa. the 29-year-old man was driving a nissan exterra when he veered off the street. there was heavy fog at the time cutting visibility to an estimated 75 feet. police arrested a san bruno man accused of driving drunk

and killing a pedestrian in pacifica. 57-year-old leopoldo padilla allegedly drove off after hitting the pedestrian after 1:30 this morning. padilla later returned to the scene and admitted his involvement. the name of the man hit has not been released. these are pictures from news chopper 2, at an elevation of 3,800 feet the top of the mountain is well above yesterday's snow level. in some area it is snow is measured at more than a foot deep there's also snow in the santa cruz mountains. the sierra has a lot of snow, the alpine meadows ski resort is estimates 9 feet of snow

since the recent winter storms began on monday. most mountain sierra reports are -- the highway patrol says road conditions also look good as you can see from these pictures in the sierra. there are no traffic restrictions on the major highways. the body of alex guthrow was found at 11:30 this morning. the 23-year-old reddingman last called his family on thursday and told them he was going to take one last run down the mountain. a southern california hiker remains missing tonight. dr.ryan carrico vanished during a hike in the mount san jacinto wilderness. searchers found his car last night and looked for him again.

fired. much safer area to come to. >> reporter: in richmond i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. two armed gunmen are accused of robbing several partygoers this morning outside a fraternity house at uc davis. started at 8:00 p.m. when two uninvited guests showed up at the new alpha kappa fraternity house. when the men were asked to leave, the two went outside and robbed four people at gunpoint. the two then took off in a car only to crash into a fence at a day care center. police caught one suspect while the other ran away. police found a loaded handgun at the center's handgun. >> needles to say had that gun been spotted by the children when the day care opened who knows what could have happened. >> reporter: the suspect has been identified as 19-year-old daniel chavez of soledad. they believe chavez and the other suspect are gang members. if you drive you've probably noticed prices are

going up at the pump. according to a new survey released today, it's due to events in the middle east and africa. the average price of gas is up 3-cents to $3.18. the highest average gas price in san francisco is $3.62. and $3.57 in both oakland and san jose. nathaniel ford, spokesman confirmed that ford is being considered to head washington's airport authority. ford is the city's highest paid authority. his departure comes as a very difficult time for nummi. preaching education, cal state official took to the pulpit on this super sunday to

central contra costa's narcotics team. two girls were injured yesterday when strong winds carried them away in a bounce house. this is the metal framing from that bounce house. the girls were at a birthday party when the wind picked up the inflatable house. the violent wind dumped one of the girls out on a yard. the other girl was carried two houses away before landing on a roof. firefighters rescued her from that roof and she was taken to a trauma center. she suffered a serious cut to her head. the other girl sustained minor injuries. >> what an incredible story. a funding fight to tell you about. how stimulus money for an emergency communications network is putting the bay area's largest city against the sheriff's department. how california's budget problems could throw the 49ers plan for a new stadium in the south bay for a loss.

well the money is there, an agreement is in place, but a plan to increase communications between bay area law enforcement agencies has hit a wall. as lloyd lacuesta explains, it's how that deal was made that's coming under fire. it happened during the 9/11 terrorists attacks almost ten years ago. and as recently as the mehserle verdict riots last year. there are communication break downs, lack of a unified system allowing agencies to talk to each other. the alameda county sheriff is trying to change that. >> we're trying to create a

broad band 4g lt system. >> reporter: motorala received an opportunities program grant detop to construct the network for the bay area. >> unfortunately that money has been diverted to a different approach. doesn't involve the city of san jose, doesn't include the city of oakland, doesn't even involve the city of san francisco. we're kind of upset about that. >> reporter: san francisco mayor chuck reed and the san jose city council have so far voted against joining the system called bay web. it would connect the nine bay area counties and santa cruz. >> miss representations were made to the u.s. government in order to get funding from the federal government, so a grant was given directly to motorola and it's going in a direction that we think is not a good use of the public funds and will interfere with our inability to public safety and violates the rights of the residents of san

jose. >> i've never misrepresented anything we're trying to do here. >> reporter: some staff members including the executive director are former motorola employees. >> the fact that they had worked for motorola who was given the grant does not seem that much of a problem to me. >> reporter: the sheriff's role has come to a question. >> the sheriff is leading us in a path to commitment with motorola. technology that hasn't been proven. >> all i'm trying to do is build the program for the future. >> reporter: how complete is a bay area communications system without involving the largest city, san jose with its 1 million residents. both san jose and santa clara county are calling for a federal investigation. >> the people that have reviewed our process at both the state and federal agencies
