that rainfall made the currents in this body of water move very rapidly very quickly. it was very dangerous conditions for anyone in any sort of raft on this body of water. the rafting trip happened on saturday. the two teens are said to go into the water about a mile away from where we are standing. a mile upstream. we went to that site earlier this morning and saw there were flowers left bemind in memory of matthew miller and gave powell. the teens were in a two-person inflatable raft. early sunday morning search crews began looking for the boys. their bodies were discovered sunday afternoon several miles downstream in concord. they found the deflated raft they had used.

the teens were both juniors at walnut creek. they were good students involved in numerous extracurricular activities. >> matt was a great artist. totally amazing. gavin was one of the nicest people you would ever meet. >> reporter: contra costa sheriffs spokesman said the creek was moving very fast. the creek can run 15 feet deep in certain spots. there is no public access to this creek. chain length fences surround most of the areas. there are no posted warnings about the dangerous waters. we are not sure if there any grief counseling planned for that school later this week. reporting live in walnut creek

allie rasmus. time now 6:03. california's central coast felt a jolt. a magnitude 3.2 quake hit just after 1:00 this morning. it was featured between parkfield enchain don -- shandon. later this morning rescue teens will resume the search for a missing hiker. he parked his car at the tran station on saturday planning to hike up to the mountain peak. that is about the time a snowstorm hit the mountains. he is an experienced hiker. he had a day pack with food, water, and extra clothing. a search has ended for a missing snow border on mt.

test -- protestors. more than 150 gathered in san francisco's union square yesterday to do what they say is not allowed in iran protest. the rally coincided with others around the world calling for basic human rights for the people of iran. a student at oprah school for girls in south africa is being questioned into the deaths of a newborn baby. police say a student gave birth to the newborn last week. the baby's body was found in the girls bag while she was being treated for excessive bleeding at the hospital. it's not known if the baby died naturally or was killed. oprah opened the south african school in 2007. well an e crypt january man has named his daughter facebook. 44 picked the name because he is proud the role the network played in the egypt revolution.

well good morning, to you. welcome back. this the ktvu channel 2 morning news i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. it's now 6:30. we normally have the opening bell. markets are closed for president's day. we do have a lot of news to tell you about. an east bay community is mourning the death of two high school classmates. allie rasmus is in walnut creek. she will tell us what the friends and family members are saying. >> reporter: dave, friends say the two students have been planning for month to go on a rafting trip. now it's getting lighter

outside we can show you a clearer picture of it. you can see the waters move pretty quickly. even though the water level is fairly low that was not the case on saturday when the two teenagers decide the to go rafting on this water. they are believed to have enter the patter. we visits this dismorning. can -- the boys were wearing bicycle style helmets but not life preservers. early sunday morning when they did not return home, search crews fanned out looking for them. their bodies were found later that afternoon. authorities also found the deflated raft they had used in another location. a friend of the boys told ktvu

to a home on marrow road. they found 150 birds alive but 16 of them were dead. spectators ran away when the deputies arrived. seven were found. the beach is open again this morning after being evacuated for the second time in three days. visitors found another box of marine flairs yesterday. someone also found a cash of them on the beach on friday. a bomb squad was called out both days to detonate the flairs. the beach had to be closed for a couple days. they were found in an area a couple times a year. they are warning anyone if you found suspicious items don't pick them up. just tell the rangers where the items are. a group of stanford university students are going to prison. they are doing this as part of a university lead workshop. it allows them to get an
