2 news at noon. good afternoon. within the last hour a six hour police standoff on the peninsula came to an end. a man and a woman were hold up in a house near the intersection of san pedro road and mission street in daly city. jade hernandez just learned some new information about what was wind this. >> reporter: that's right. less than an hour ago a six hour standoff ended. it ended just around the corner from the green light. we watched as we heard a string of loud bangs and glass breaking as negotiations broke down and tactical officers prepared for the couple inside to surrender. in black walked out first. then tactical officers swarmed inside. a female suspect walked out without incident as well. media was kept at the intersection of mission and west market street here in daly city for hours. we watched as the san mateo county regional tactical rescue team prepared and readied themselves to react as the situation unfolded. we understand officers responded to an alarm sounding at a nearby payday loan. that's how the situation started. they found out that the alarm was false. but the officers then heard gunshots down the street and ran over to see what was going on. it appears to have been a domestic dispute involving a man and a woman. >> the officer approached the house and all of a sudden he went up the stairs and sees the female up on the top landing. according to the officer she was very agitated in the sense of being angry, upset, and letting the officer no on no uncertain terms to get out of here. >> reporter: there were at least three dozen officers here

during the standoff. daly city, pacifica and san mateo county responded. this all began at 5:00 this morning. and to give you a time line of just how long officers have been out here, just before 11:00 we heard the loud bangs and then glass breaking. and then a two arrests were made just after 11:00 this morning. now you're taking a look at just around the corner from the green light that is where officers were staked out. that's where they had media just at that light post. and as we mentioned that standoff ended with the arrest of a man and a woman. now we were waiting for an update from the law enforcement agencies involved in the standoff. as soon as we get that we'll bring that to you. reporting live from daly city, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, jade. autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow after the drowning deaths of two teenage boys from walnut creek. search teams found their bodies in separate locations yesterday afternoon. they had tried to raft down the city's name sake creek the day

before. this morning there were flowers for 16-year-old matthew and 17- year-old gavin at a creek entrance they may have used. authorities say the creek is very dangerous right now because of the heavy rains, floating debris and fast flowing currents. friends say the teens had planned their adventure for months. >> i helped them plan a route. they do a lot of stuff like that that's just stuff that could be dangerous. >> i heard the idea of going rafting down it a few times. it sounded like fun. but nobody had any idea. >> this is home video of powell. he and miller were juniors in high school and described by classmates as geniuses and best friends. the search for a missing snow boarder ended with the discovery of his body just outside the boundary of the ski park yesterday. the 23-year-old from redding last called his family on thursday and told them he was going to take one more run down

the mountain. the area had avalanche conditions and two feet of fresh snow. today rescue teams continue the search for a missing southern california hiker. the doctor parked his car at the transstation on the mountain on saturday intending to hike to the peak. he last used his cell phone at noon on saturday and that's when a snowstorm hit. family members say he is an experienced hiker and was carrying a day pack with food, water and extra clothing. in the upper midwest states, people who don't have the day off are faced with a dismal commute after the latest storm. the winter storm dumped snow across michigan, minnesota, wisconsin and on toward new york and the northeast. some areas got up to ten inches of new snow. that's snarling traffic and causing flight cancellations. in the airport in minneapolis, delta canceled 700 flights. we checked with the san

francisco airport. the spokesman told us there's a national ground in place for chicago and flights to or from that area could be delayed as much as an hour. however there are no other delays at sfo right now. in the south bay take a look at this live picture. the weekend snowfall has left mt. hamilton sparkling in the sun right now at 4200 feet. mt. hamilton is one of the highest peaks in the bay area. it is a beautiful sight, but before you plan on heading up the mountain call ahead to the observatory visitor center to make sure the road is open. winter weather also brought up to nine feet of snow to the lake tahoe area over the last week. there is no snow in the forecast until this coming weekend. so the roads are clear right now. we just checked with cal trans and there are no chain requirements or traffic restrictions to report for interstate 80 or highways 50 and 88. and that's good news for all the people likely heading home from the mountains on this president's day. after nearly a week of protests, the violent upheaval

in the african nation of libya continues today. ktvu's live in the newsroom with the latest video and information including reaction from libya-americans here in the bay area. >> well, tori, with no internet access and state media outlets still under the control of libya's long time dictator, it's difficult to get clear information about exactly what's going on in that country. foreign journalists are barred from entering libya. but anti-government protesters are finding ways to transmit images via satellite and mobile technology. this is video from youtube that shows shots being fired in the libya city early this morning. other images show thousands of people gathered in front of a federal government building in that city. and there are some reports that anti-government protesters have taken control of some of the federal buildings. the people in this video are demonstrating because they say they want to see an end to libya leader gadafi's 40 year

rule over that country. >> you have failed economies and dismal economic and social conditions. libya is supposed to be one of the most wealthiest states in the world yet you have a great deal of poverty. >> but all gadafi's son warned if the protests don't stop the country will be torn apart by civil war. here in the bay area we spoke to a stanford graduate with family in libya. she says she strongly supports the cause of anti-government protesters but worries about the country's future. >> in libya there's been no room for political parties for the past four decades. so unlike egypt they are less organized from a political perspective and it's a little more difficult to think about who's going to take over. >> now just in the past few hours libya's ambassadors at the united nations have called for gadafi to step down as the country's ruler. u.n. secretary is reported to have had an extensive telephone discussion monday with gadafi express deep concern with the

escalating violence there. the obama administration is also expressing the same concerns and condemning the violence in libya. in the newsroom, ktvu channel 2 news. all right. thank you. and similar unrest continues to grow in other parts of the middle east. video posted on youtube shows panic protesters running from police on motorcycles yesterday in the city of shiraz, iran. protests have broken out in mor rocco. they're continuing in yemen. next month's formula one race has been called off because of all the protests. the uprising in the middle east have shown the u.s. government the power of the internet to spread democracy. >> we want to use it to rebut some of the falsehoods and accusations unfortunately made against the united states. mostly we want to be in the mix with this incredible young, energetic population, that is seeking the same rights to

time is running out for surfers getting ready to show off their talent near half-moon bay. there is just one week left before the window closes for the j at mavericks big wave invitational. contest organizers don't really see any big waves on the horizon. the window opened on december 1st and is shorter this year because of the permitting process and a construction project. two dozen surfers around the world are waiting for a 24 hour

notice to participate. a sacramento reporter and photographer are shaken up but otherwise okay after being attacked. [ indiscernible ] >> this is video from our fox affiliate in sacramento where they were reporting on a fatal shooting. as they approached friends and family of the victim, little was pulled to the ground and kicked. he was hit in the face. police are reviewing this footage and video from several other news stations who witnessed the attack. no arrests have been made. today is the final push at 14 bay area car dealerships raising money for the mt. diablo school district. dealerships are donating part of their sales from today and this past weekend to help save music and athletic programs. the mt. diablo school district eliminated funding to years ago. and the athletics program needs more than a million dollars to

stay afloat. gas prices just went up again. we checked this morning and they're up another penny since yesterday. more than 5 cents over the last few weeks. san francisco expect to pay $3.62 for a gallon of regular. and san jose $3.58. and a penny less than that in oakland. one man we talked to this morning says he may change his driving habits to save money. >> the price of the gas now, i'm pretty much at a point where i don't even drive. i would much rather take public transportation. >> california drivers are still paying about a dollar less than the all time high of $4.61 back in june of 2008. luxury hotels on san francisco's nob hill are facing some tough times. both hopkins and huntington court are up for sale. defaulted on an $80 million loan. according to the san francisco chronicle, the fairmont is

battling with the city over a condo conversion plan. the permit has expired and the building's future could be in jeopardy without a permit extension from city supervisors. the fair month is seen as a landmark by both tourists and residents. >> i think it would be very sad if these hotels were to go out of business. >> i am shocked. absolutely blown away. it's so sad. >> the president says he will not commit to an extension because of a long time labor dispute and community concerns about the size of the condo project. the santa clara city council will meet tomorrow to make sure the funds slated for a new 49ers stadium don't disappear. governor jerry brown has said he wants to do away with redevelopment agencies and funnel that money to education and local government. the santa clara city council will look at ways to ensure that the $40 million promised for the project is not cut from the state budget.

good afternoon to you. it's a cool mostly cloudy day for our holiday. giving a look at mt. diablo. actually picked up a dusting of snow. we showed mt. hamilton earlier today and we saw six inches fall over mt. hamilton over the course of the weekend. here at mt. diablo not so much. giving you a look at the radar once again because another day, another round of rain. but you can see from the radar not a lot going on out there. just a few returns. la honda picked up .1 this morning. the rest of us dealing with gray skies and cool conditions. if i back up a bit i'm going to show you where this storm is out in the pacific. it's expected to slide its way south. and we are not likely to get much rain out of it. with that said, i am going to say the possibility of maybe a few sprinkles as again this storm moves its way south. it will continue right west of southern california later today and then into the next couple of days. watch it continue on over baja, california. for today cloudy conditions,

it is. back with us again. the wet weather returns. and this time around it could be even colder than what we saw. >> so we could very likely see more snow. >> more low snow. >> even lower down than what we saw this weekend. >> yeah. >> it was pretty, but it was chilly. >> right. >> okay. thank you. one of the americans on board a yacht hijacked by somalia pirates has family in san francisco and oakland. the mother of phyllis lives in the bay area and told us this morning she is worried about her daughter's safety. mccay and her partner had just joined up with the southern california couple aboard their yacht in the indian ocean before it was hijacked on friday. a u.s. warship is now shadowing the yacht as it heads for somalia. the bay area family says no ransom demands have been made, but federal authorities are keeping in contact with them. some stanford students will be spending their sundays in prison. ten students pursuing degrees in law, psychology and literature will work with 20 inmates in san quentin and gain

insiders knowledge of the prison system. the inmates have all received associates degrees through the prison university project. the groups will hold sessions on sunday afternoons in a classroom at the prison. preparations are underway for the 100th bay 2 breakers race in san francisco this may. but it's future is on shaky ground. the race has been losing money for years. and corporate sponsor ing also pulled out. plus growing frustration by residents over rowdy runners who drink, urinate and toss garbage along the course. and organizers say they are banning alcohol and floats this year. the debate is already heating up. >> i think it's a little wilder. it has been. but it's such a fun just celebration. >> actually, on this block here i never seen none of that. mostly a lot of people come and they recycle. >> organizers say they are hoping to transition the race from a boozy one to one that is

on this president's day a new gallop poll is out on who people think was america's greatest president. according to the survey the greatest president was ronald reagan. reagan even came out ahead of abraham lincoln who is in second place. many other recent presidents also made the top ten list including bill clinton, john f. kennedy and barack obama. george w. bush tied for tenth place with thomas jefferson. poll officials believe that the recency effect is in play meaning the people are voting for presidents who served during their lifetime. the writings of former presidents are on display in the bay area. >> your most obedient and very humble servant g. washington. >> the presidential signature exhibit will be open today in palo alto. it comes courtesy of retired wall street executive joe baldwin. he began collecting presidential memorabilia in

off a blood drive in san jose this morning. centers in oakland, pleasant hill and pleasanton are also making a special effort to welcome blood donors today. organizers say more blood is needed because bad weather prevented many donors from getting to blood centers. a texas company is taking a new approach to retirement. river city condos is developing a new giant community for seniors that floats. it's on a boat. the idea is retirees will be able to float around different rivers across the u.s. and never have to be tied to just one location. so far only 24 condo units have been sold. construction is set to begin this summer. an elusive wolveine has become something of a celebrity. biologists have been tracking this one for three years now. as far as they know he's the only wolfer own in the entire sierra nevada. his dna indicates he may have
