cover out there right now, there's even a little bit of shower activity. here's a system just offshore. i showed this on the 5:00 newscast. it's dropping straight south. if this system were to come down a little closer to us we would be seeing snow right now in parts of the bay area. on the bay area peaks, overnight lows as i mentioned. 35 in vallejo. we have clouds out there, that's keeping it a little warmer. we also have a pretty good shot for some very cold valley fog and even a little bit of frost. as i mentioned in the five clocked broadcast, we have a weather system coming this way that i have never seen before. it'll be very cold, it'll bring snow to sea level. i'll have more coming up. and in the east bay mount diablo received a good dusting. more than a foot deep in some places and just enough for sledding. a lot of people waited in a long line to get into the state

park. at 3,600 feet, mount diablo is the tallest in the bay area. and up to 9 feet of snow has fallen in the lake tahoe area over the last week. right now the highway patrol says conditions look good as many drivers are leaving the mountain and heading back home to the bay area. at this hour there are no chain requirements or traffic conditions to report for interstate 80 or highways 50. we have the latest information on ktvu.com. just click on the weather tab on our home page. and friends and family of two teenagers who died over the weekend are trying to come to grips with the loss. patti lee has the story. >> reporter: all afternoon people have been stopping to

pay their respects to the two teenage boys who's raft was discovered near by. the gear used by contra costa county swift water rescue and recovery team is still drying onlines. a tragic reminder of saturday's efforts. >> it's difficult. most of the guys here are dads themselves. >> reporter: the community is struggling to cope with the deaths of gavin powell. >> it's hard. i keep waiting for someone to say it was a mistake, it was somebody else. >> i don't think a week went by that i haven't seen either of them. >> reporter: eden harris showed us the art work that matt and gavin created on their free time as well as the hundreds of facebook messages that were posted by friends and family in the past 24 hours. >> a help, a little help, some people need that sense of

honor. it's scheduled for this wednesday night at the open space in walnut creek where the two liked to hike. a six hour police stand off at the peninsula today came to a peaceful end. a man and woman were hold up in a house near the intersection of san pablo road and mission. it was prompted by a domestic disturbance in which about five shots were fired. you saw the situation live this morning on mornings on 2. the man and woman who were boyfriend and girlfriend finally came out with their hands up and were promptly arrested. in libya, a bloody crack down against protesters continues in the capital city. military planes and helicopters have been ored or -- been

ordered to fire on protesters there. libya's deputy u.n. ambassador called gadahfi a murder and asked him to step down. ktvu's rob roth spent today talking to people who have extra reason to worry. and rob joins us live now in san francisco with their story, rob. >> reporter: julie we're at united nations plaza across if street from san francisco's city hall. this is where a rally in support of the libyan uprising is planned for 1:00 p.m. saturday. this 28-year-old mountain view woman asked we not use her last name. she is concerned that it will jeopardize the safety of her

mother, aunts and uncles living in libya. >> it is a concern of what will happen once officials learn they are participating. it's just gut wrenching. >> reporter: she says she fully supporting the uprising and her relatives are not sure what's going on outside their city because communications have apparently been cut off. >> we talk to them, they look to us to tell them what's happening in all parts of libya. >> reporter: this san jose woman who was born in libya has frankicly been trying to reach her mother. >> we're very concerned, the fact that we can't get through is pretty scary. >> reporter: despite the dangers she says she too supports the revolution and wishes she were there. she hopes the protest will keep growing. >> no that they have chosen to speak, there's just no going back. i think by the end of this like

the roadway to triage more than 20 people that were hurt. the bus slid down 20 feet down a hillside. a local assemblyman is trying to change the way people enroll to become organ donors through the dmv. he's writing a bill that will require the dmv to add a link on their website to allow people to become organ donors. >> california is still one of the lowest states with signed up donors.

controlled substance and the irs could place tax break 80e. >> if 280e were applied strictly we would not be allowed to deduct our rent, payroll or any normal expenses that other business deduct. >> reporter: attorney henry wiscoski is representing several dispensaries. he says the tax code needs to be updated. >> what the california dispensaries are engaged in is not trafficking, they are engaged in illegal activity that benefits -- in a legal activity that benefits its patients. >> reporter: several members of congress have drafted a letter to the irs asking it to allow dispensaries to deduct business expenses and not treat them as drug traffickers. >> i hope that what's going on is that the irs a is making a good faith attempt to understand our industry and to tax us like any other

pulled its billboard that makes reference to the jones town massacre. the restaurant put up this billboard that says quote we're like a cult with better cool aid to die for. jim jones temple began in the bay area they then moved to giana in 1978, that's where a mass of members died after drinking a cyanide laced punch. the restaurant owners now say putting up that billboard was a mistake. the satellite called glory is scheduled to blast off. once in orbit, glory are study tiny particles and their effect. and a presidential poll was

released this president's day. the poll, who people thought was the best president. ronald reagan came in first, abraham lincoln second. well, more now on the bay area's weather. cold and things are about to get everyone colder. let's go back to bill now in the weather center. >> this will be an interesting week. it starts off a little drier. very cold and snow returns at the end of the week. this system normally you would look at that and say, bill it's going to come right through here. we're going to get rain in the next hour, not so with this weather system. it's working it's way right down the coast. it is going to kick up through northern baja. big weather down south. we just get a few high clouds. those high clouds will keep temperatures overnight relatively mild for this time of year. i think we'll be above freezing in most locations. in the cold spots upper 20s low 30s. a good shot for frost tonight, good chance for fog as well. overnight lows on the cool

side. here comes the system, way up here coming up through canada. it's going to drop late in the week it changes everything. it's going to be very cold and very snowy. that's late in the week. thursday, friday, saturday. in the meantime we're dry. for the most part. there are a few sprinkles from that system out there but just minimal stuff. few clouds out there. overnight lows cool in the north bay valleys. that's the way it is in february. nothing crazy, no frost advisories or freeze warnings. it will be kind of mild in the afternoon. partly to mostly sunny, that takes us into tuesday and wednesday. when we get into thursday that's when everything comes around, there's a system from way up here it's going to drop straight down. it's where they come from that tells you what they're going to be like. when they come from here, they are warm and they are moist. when they come from a high latitude, way up from the polar region, they bring a lot of cold air and really crazy stuff can happen with our weather. we're going to see it most likely friday and saturday. thunderstorms, snow on bay area peaks. i'm starting wednesday, because i want you to see the progress

registration of this system. the blue is your straight line, that's thursday. then we get into thursday afternoon. you see more snow, look at the mountains that's a winter storm warning for sure. then we get into friday and it continues to drop. that snow line heads our way. we could easily on thursday, friday night saturday morning have a good shot of sea level snow. it's a ways out. but it's an unusual weather pattern. we'll watch it for you in the meantime we're drying out. meantime percents of average, 100 percents of average in santa rosa that's huge. more rain coming, more cold weather into the week. >> when you say sea level snow you mean in san francisco. >> there's always that possibility. more than likely it'll be livermore, concord, santa rosa. hard to get snow in san francisco because the bay waters in the ocean modify that upward temperature.

a part of the delta could finally get a whole lot cleaner. the area known as fisherman's cut is slated to be finished in june. for years contra costa county and federal agencies have been trying to clean up the area of abandoned boats, junk and debris. it's been around for over 100 years but could this be the last year for the betabreakers. hear why there's some real concern about its future.
