7.1 quake. experts say this one was closer to the surface. the mayor declared a state of emergency and ordered the city center evacuated. tonight new zelanders are shaking to their core. >> this is the most frightening thing i've ever experienced. >> a short time ago the nation's prime minister announced 55 deaths as we said. that number is expected to rise. all international flights out of new zealand have been cancelled because the nation's air traffic control center is located in christ church. when officials determine if it's operable, flights will resume. some of the latest pictures of the damage came from twitter. this imagine came into our newsroom not long after the quake hit. more and more pictures have hit twitter, including this one of

started at around 11:00 a.m. cops responded to shots fired. s.w.a.t. teams were called in, the couple came out of the house with their arms raised and surrendered peacefully. no one was hurt. the coroner has released the name of a 25-year-old man killed over the weekend in a hit and run. scott garrigan was found on the side of the road. 57-year-old san bruno resident leopoldo tobia initially drove away from the scene. he was arrested after he returned to tell officers he had hit the man. he was arrested for driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a crime. there were 22 people on the

bus heading home from a weekend bible study retreat. the highway patrol says rescuers had a hard time getting to the injured. >> with the number of patients and then the difficult of getting to the patients in that bus, i mean makes it very hard for the officers up here. the person who died has not been identified. ten other people suffered serious injuries and the rest had minor or moderate injuries. autopsies were performed today on two teenagers who died while rafts down a rain swollen canal. >> reporter: this is where if two teenagers set off on their rafting trip. friends came out to put flowers

when a san jose grocery store closed are fighting for lost wages. more than 50 men and women found themes out of a job when a store suddenly went bankrupt. now they are suing for unpaid wages. the workers plan to hold a news conference tomorrow morning in san jose. the city of san jose wants to recover a half million dollars of taxpayer money it invested in the chain back in 2008. thousands of people are signed up for the next betabreakers race in san francisco. but will the hundreds running this may be the last. as jana katsuyama reports, it's a matter of sponsors and sobriety. >> reporter: it's 12- kilometers of people running, jumping and running in costumes. it's on track to celebrating a milestone, its 100 year anniversary. >> it's a great tradition. everybody has a blast. >> reporter: a traditional

killed a snow boarder. the redding man went missing on thursday after he called his family to say he was going to take one more run down the mountain. his body was found in an area at risk for avalanches. and a man is enjoying the warmth indoors tonight. julian brantman was plucked from a mountain by helicopter rescuers today. the search began yesterday after he called a friend to say he was lost on the mountain. he says that around 4:00 in the afternoon he figured he better bed down for the night. >> so i kind of just set up shop. got some pine needles down and did the fetal position thing. a crew managed to get through to 911 on his cell phone this morning. he is said to be in good condition tonight. tonight is another day for bay area residents to enjoy

1,000 visited today. >> every year it's different, i wanted to go up to see how it was today. >> reporter: today was more quieter than yesterday when 1,800 cars had to turn around. her advise to everyone is 23 you can see snow from the -- if you can see snow from the valley then the mountain will be closed. a new study is adding to the smart meter controversy. sage associates an environmental consulting firm says that within 6-inches of those meters the radiation may possibly violate fcc measures. many studies had concluded that smart meters are safe. a local assembly man wants to change the way people enroll to be organ donors through the dmv. he's introduced a bill that would require the dmv to put a link on its website to the state's organ and tissue donor registry.

shopping. soon this store and others in the area will be closing down for good. as the national retailer tried to survive bankruptcy. >> it's busy. it's busy and it's the stock is definitely depleted, books but we did our fair damage. >> reporter: it is one what analysts calls the biggest bankruptcy in the history of the book business. with 200 of borders 642 stores shutting down, books and other merchandise are selling from 20 to 30% off. >> the line was big, but i didn't have any trouble finding anything. >> reporter: are they bargains or? >> well, compared to other times i've been in there it's cheaper. >> reporter: if borders had attracted the crowds it is getting now it probably would never have filed chapter 11. but the reality is, that americans are going online more and more for books. some cities are losing a gathering place. >> this is kind of our go to place where we go to get gifts or if the kids need a book for school project or whatever.

snow levels as i just mentioned but a lot could change between thousand and friday when this all could transpire. either way, it's going to get real cold around here at the end of the week. we're going to get more rain. we'll watch it closely and update it. a new study suggests that climate change will be to blame for a longer allergy season for americans. complaints about allergies have increased in the last 30 years. one culprit may be that the ragweed pollen season is longer in some parts of the country. americans spend about $21 million each year on allergies. stanford researchers are issuing a warning tonight that you shouldn't drink before going in for a hip or knee replacement. the more people drink before those type of surgeries the higher the risk of complications. the complications included infections and blood clots. why one man says he hopes
