dozens of parolees. kraig debro has learned there was actually a specific mission behind this mission. good afternoon, kraig. >> reporter: good afternoon. police are putting people they take into custody at the east maund station at 7 -- eastmont station at 73rd and concord. they said they took in custody less than ten people. they say it's not how many people they arrested but the message the officers send. >> reporter: officers stepped out of their vehicles armed with a list of 70 names. we're going after individuals who are on probation and parole, people involved in at- risk bafner and violent crimes. >> reporter: it's called "operation sunrise" and not just because the raids began this morning. but about complaints about robberies, shoots and prostitutions along an elementary school and high

school. >> reporter: this man said he didn't call to complain but can verify the complaints. >> i don't think the children should have to put up with the prostitutes hanging around the streets. >> reporter: police from the housing and authority were joined by housing cops and state parole agents. they came looking for four people on the list and any counter band they could find in the -- counter ban they could find in the area. >> remove an element involved in the crime as well as it sends a clear, definitive message to those that we're out there, we're proactive and they may be next. >> reporter: after finding one man on the list, a manager of a halfway house -- >> we invited tell them to come

[ cheers ] >> the mount diablo school board has decided not to close any more schools, at least for now. that was the applause and cheering from parents, teachers and students last night after learning silverwood and westwood schools will be kept open. the decision came after the superintendent made alternative recommendations for saving money. but the school board president warning the -- wans the ideas may only be a temporary fix if voters don't increase taxes by june. we're learning more details on the deaths of two teenagers

from walnut creek. galvin powell and mathew miller crowned -- drowned when they tried to raffle down a canal filled with debris. the stream may have appeared safe but investigators say the two teenagers were caught in the fast-moving fires and were pulled into an underwater water tunnel. family and freds will begin -- friends will gather tonight for a vigil and will be held at the shell, where the two boys often hiked. and two dozen people are out of their homes because of a fire. authority say it was caused by a child playing with matches. the fire was reported at 8:00 last night at a two-story condominium on kartogo court. ktvu caught video of the damage caused by the flames. investigators also say there was a national gas leak in the building which made it harder to fight the flames. one woman suffered smoke inhalation and burns to her

hands. at least 25 people have to find another place to live. and another fire, this one involving a car also forced dozens of people from their san jose apartments. this one happened at 6:00 in a two-store reapartment complex at 12th and key street. no one was hurt in the fire but it did force many residents out in the harm. >> we're successful at knocking it down. very minimal smoke damage but it did evacuate all 24 units. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a republican assemblyman from southern california has proposed a bill that could eliminate collective bargaining rights for public employee pensions. similar to the proposal that's raised such a fury in wisconsin. observers give it no chance of advancing in the california legislature. in the meantime, the wisconsin state senate met for the time -- for the third time

without any senate democrats. the senate left last week to block a vote. the republicans have been taking unissues not related to the budget, such as resolutions, praising the green bay packers and the ufrts of wisconsin football -- university of wisconsin football team. and scott walker was the victim of a prank call by a reporter for an alternative newspaper in new york. the reporter posed billionaire david coke. cash deals are pushing home prices lower and first-time buyers out of the market. the national association of realtors says existing home sales rose 2.7% in january but that most of the buyers were investors who could pay cash.

the number of first-time buyers shrank to 29% of the market and that's the lowest level in two years. a more healthy level is about 40%. the medium price of a home sold in january was just under $160,000. apple's shareholders have rejected a plan to require company disclosure about a succession plan for ceo steve jobs. they cast their ballots today at the annual shareholders meeting in cupertino. and preliminary voting shows it was turned down. apple said a plan was in place internally but to require its disclosure would compromise trade secret. this morning, one analyst said at this point, steve jobs is important but not indispense in. >> had jobs left a few years ago, i would be worried aboutle but today i think -- i would be worried about apple but but

today i think they could survive without steve jobs because everyone's relying on the system itself. >> steve jobs did not say anything about his cancer and his liver transplant until after they occurred. apple will introduce a next- generation ipad on march 2nd. the report says it will be announced at the yerba ba yan gnaw -- yerba buena arts. the first one was introduced about a year ago. since then apple has sold about 15 million of them. the new ipad is expected to be thinner and lighter with a front-facing camera. apple's stock is up 1% by the way. a very unusual weather pattern developing for the next couple of days. we still have the clouds in

place. out towards mount hamilton, you can see the dusting and we'll add some more accumulation to here and also the bay area as we head into friday night and possibly into saturday morning. right now on stormtracker2 not a lot to show you. as far as current numbers, mainly in the lower 50s. we're not gonna warm too much from the current levels. santarosa, 54, livermore checks in at 50. here's the overall weather story for today -- scattered showers out there, tomorrow showers developing. and then for friday, some cold rain and some very low snow levels. you may be hearing about them possibly down to sea level. this is something i've nod made in quite -- i've not made in quite some time but for the north bay hills, this begins late thursday, primarily thursday evening into friday afternoon. snowfall about 2 inches.

but amounts could approach 6 inches, especially for the higher terrain, up above 2500 feet and this will likely expand to other parts of the area. the main storm, the main cold air, that's up here and that will gradually spread to the south. our rain and forecast model, not a lot to show you. there's that snow line moving into mendocino county. here we are at 5:00, some rain showers developing, you will see that begin to flirt with the bay area. this could be expanded to include more parts of the region as we head into friday, friday night, the bulk of the rain showers could linger into saturday morning. 3:00 this afternoon. 52 to 57. by 6:00 scattered showers, 47 to 52. we're cooling off low to mid- 40s. so enjoy today with the visits in the forecast because a --

"the mercury news" reports $280,000 in donations are needed to save the mounting

unit. without the money, it could be eliminated in june. the horse unit is responsible for covering the downtown area, and parks and major events. according to a research group, neighborhood scout, there is a 1 in 7 chance a car will be stolen in west oakland around adeline and then delaw parkway. the-- dela parkway. the second area is in north san jose around zanker drive. >> the people here we all work at tech companies. there's a little bit of money here. it's easy to pick off the cars because everyone is working and no one is there to protect their things. >> people say the number one reason for thefts is people leaving their cars running and unattended. up next, lindsay lohan's day in court.
