into the back of a home on rebecca way. we're taking a look at the picture from the mass cam. right now there's a tarp. underneath the tarp is the patio. we expect investigators to be back here to exhume the body today. the marin county coroner's office mr. make the i.d. when they get the body. police were brought here because of a missing person's report from a neighbor. police aren't saying what the information is, that there could be a body buried. the information turned out to be true. a neighbor said the couple kept to themselves but you could sometimes hear the couple's conversation. >> it's moving from a missing person's investigation into a criminal investigation. our investigation will be focused op following up with additional interviews of family members and the resident who

lived her with -- here with mr. smith. >> reporter: evelyn smith is married to dale smith. he's the one missing. smith, along with her attorneys gave officers per noition search the back -- permission to search the backyard. they will be back out here shortly to resume the grim task of resuming the body and who is buried in this backyard. kraig debro reporting. also, we've got new information coming in from vallejo residents about why they didn't answer frantic calls for help from two teenage byes whose house was on -- boys whose house was on fire. claudine wong is the only reporter on the scene. she will be back in a couple minutes to tell us why the first

calls about that fire were never answered. also, this morning we're getting information -- in fact, it's still coming in another recall from toyota. it's all because of gas pedals that get stuck. they made the announcement an hour ago. they are expanding that 2009 recall to three more models of toyota vebltion-- vehicles. they include the 4 runner suv, raff and the lex sus. the vehicles have been recalled due to safety issues. an update just now on new home sales. the commerce department will be releasing this information shortly. we'll have more on that coming up in jugs a -- just a moment. state regulators will report on new rules on pipeline

pressure. it could lead to companies like p.d ge being fined for pressure spikes. critics say it would not require operators to report. it critics say planned or not, pressure surges weaken pipelines and operators should be required to report all of them. >> let's back to ktvu's claudine wong where there was a house fire. people's homes were on fire, tried to get help but couldn't get it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the fire started in this bedroom, the front bedroom of this home. take a look at this pile of debris. this came out of the bedroom. firefighters believe the fire started on one of the mattresses what he curling iron was left sitting on top of it for a couple of hours. all of this scale out of the

mother's bedroom. she wasn't home at the time. inside were two teenage boys. they heard the smoke detector go off about 2:30 a.m. they got out and tried to get help. they didn't have a phone so they went door to door asking for help. no one would open their door. no one would talk to them. one father next door said yes, the father heard the knocking but didn't answer. >> he heard banging. he refused to answer the door until i got the fire department. >> did you tell him not to open. >> i told him not to open the door due to the neighborhood. >> reporter: what about the neighborhood. >> not the best, a lot of derelicts out here. >> reporter: the mother found her boils two blocks away. she had been downtown with a broken car and was walking home. she had her phone, so she called 911 from her cell phone as she

stood outside the fire station. >> i was standing right there by the fire department when i called. >> reporter: what she didn't realize was that a neighbor had called as well by that time. so firefighters had already started getting ready to get out. back out here live at the damage, there is still a family dog missing, a 2-month-old chihuahua. the red cross was out here earlier assisting the family in find lag place to stay. you can see the front windows are board up. there's a lot of damage to the roof line. we expect a crew out here in the next little bit so to try it get that covered before the next storm comes. live out here in vallejo, claude claude -- claudine wong. fbi agents and san mateo

sheriff's deputies will be joining bart police for this joint training exercise. all of this will happen on a closed platform. they'll use an out of service train. the goal of the exercise is to help coordinate emergency response from various law enforcement agencies. all right. it is 7:07. we want to check in now with sam and see what -- sal and see what's happening on the roads. >> it's wet on the roads. that may be slowing traffic down. you should make plans for perhaps not driving tomorrow. maybe you want to take transit, if it does snow and we get ice, that could be a bad commute. san francisco is already wet. northbound and southbound 101, the traffic is moving along well. i want to mention to the guys in

the control room, you may want to pull it up for me. newschopper 2 has arrived at an accident scene. this truck was flipped over in front of san francisco state. it was flipped over there. they have a tow truck. they will try to put that flipped over pickup truck on the back of that flatbed truck. this is southbound 19th avenue just south of winston, north of holloway. it's in front of san francisco state university. now the lrv's that run there are not affected. southbound traffic is being turned around at stonestown. northbound traffic is getting by but southbound is not. if you could just go up to -- there you go go up to stonestown. no one is getting by. look at all that traffic getting by or trying to get into the stonestown parking lot and go around the block. not that great here receipt past

active and colder as we start heading towards the weekend. a lot of the highs would be in the low 50s. tomorrow they will be in the 40s. the regional radar shows the system towards mennen seen know county. we have winter weather advisories for the north bay hills at 4:00 for snow around 1,000 and the bay area hills on friday. that includes the foothills, deab below and higher -- diablo and higher elevations. concord our target forecast, cloudy and cooler with rain developing. you can see the moisture coming. the low starts to drop down right there, the last few frames you can see the signature. it's taking the moisture from that low which is spinning. you combine the cold and warmer air along with a very active jet stream. that's going to be a big time

libyan leader moammar gadhafi blames the uprising on al qaeda. our reporter allison burns joins us with the details of the interview. >> reporter: gadhafi repeated the strange claim that protesters are on a lues know jeanic pills and that al qaeda was putting the pills in their coffee. meanwhile, americans are trying to flee the country. about 600 americans are on a ferry in tripoli trying to get to the island of malta. the state department said they're safe. there are more reports of libyan units cracking down on antigovernment protesters. the son of the libyan leader

said those death reports are not true. this morning analysts are weighing in on who might replace gadhafi. >> if gadhafi's regime falls there's no coherent choice in his nation. that creates a situation where you could have practiced cal islam pick jihadists step in. >> reporter: now president obama is sending secretary of state hillary clinton to coordinate a response with other international leaders. the u.s. is considering a range of punishments for libya, including a no fly zone over the country. reporting for ktvu channel 2 news. the violence in libya is sending oil prices to a high level. checking online right now it is at $99.92.

this, of course, after reports that half of libya's oil production has shut down. that has many drivers worried about $4 a gallon gasoline or higher. the current price in san francisco is 45-cents higher than the national average standing at $3.64. a nickel less in san jose and oakland. if the violence continues we could be paying more. >> if saudi arabia had major disruption and civil war, i think prices could easily go to over $200 a barrel and the price of gasoline could certainly go to $7 or $8 a gallon.

>> the financial times of london reports saudi arabia is in talk bins creasing its current production to make up for the falling production in plib plib -- libya. california drivers are paying 45 cents more. we normally pay 30 cents more. part of it is because of this refinery, which makes 10% of our cleaner burning fuel, has been shut down for seven weeks. but it's going back online. in fact, we're flying over this live. take a good wide shot of this. the refinery officials said residents who live or work by the row fine ri may see steam coming out. it's part of the restart at valerio. a new report came out about new home sales.

it shows a 12.6% drop last month. the commerce department said 284,000 homes were sold in january. analysts expected a drop in the numbers but new home sales were lower than they anticipated. economists said this is a sign the housing industry still has not improved since the worst year for home sales in almost a half century. a new report suggests only one third of community college students graduate and even few per transfer to a four-year college or university. according to the study 23% of students transfer and 31% earn certificates or degrees. the bay area's graduation and transfer rates are about the same as the state average. it was published by researchers at sacramento state university. an indiana state prosecutor just got fired for what he said about those protests in

wisconsin's state capital. cox said in this day and age his comments were probably not a good idea. state workers in wisconsin are calling for the largest day of demonstrations in state history. the planned demonstrations follow over a week of protests over the governor's budget repair bill. the governor's bill calls for an annual vote for unions to maintain their certification. democrats say it's union busting. there is still not a quorum, but a vote is scheduled for today at noon. the chp wants it know if alcohol may have been involved in the head-on collision that involved a wrongway driver. it happened about 10 last night near 80. a wrongway driver -- and look at these pictures -- crashed head-on into another car.

that driver, described as an elderly woman, suffered injuries to both legs. the other driver complained of pain to his legs and ribs. both were rush to the hospital. >> let's check in with sal no is -- who is keep lag close eye on another accident. >> reporter: just reopened 19th between winston and holloway. there was an overturned pickup that closed it for about an hour. this is a big improvement for what was going on before when they had all the southbound lanes closed. northbound is not payfected really. it hasn't been although people were slowing down to look at this stuff but southbound traffic is still unwinding from stonestown. it was backed up for a couple of city blobltion. traffic is backed up for about a 20-minute weight. in the silicon valley, 101 and 84 are getting slow. let's go to steve.

discovery of a body that's still buried in the backyard of a home in novato. the body was found last night by the police and the fbi. it wall on rebecca way. investigators believe the body is that of 74-year-old daily smith who has been missing for several weeks. he shared the home with his wife evelyn who police say is a person of interest. her whereabouts are not know. kraig debro will have an update coming up at 8:00. as we mentioned, we are expect an update from investigators at the top of the hour. a family is without a home and said their pet is missing after an early morning fire that sent family members running for safety. firefighters said two teenagers were home at the time in but escaped when smoke detectors woke them up.

firefighters said a curling iron is likely the cause. no one else was home. no oth -- injuries were reported. in sacramento massive flames gutted a warehouse. it started yesterday evening. crews are still on the scene at this our watching for hot spots. the building was evacuated and no injuries were reported. investigators are supposed to be able to -- supposed to return to enter the building to determine a cause. the labor department just reported the latest weekly unemployment numbers. 391,000 people filed for first time unemployment benefits. that's down 22,000 from the woke before. continuing claims fell to slightly 3.8 million, down from the week before. the experian credit

reporting company just added rent payment history to the credit report. it will use it from the rent bureau di vismghts experian said it will make it easier for college students for recent graduates and even immigrants who pay their rent on time to raise their credit scores. it includes 8 million of the 38 million rental units. the san francisco police department has been given the green light to check into using tasers and other less lethal weapons. about 11:30 last night the police commission voted 6-1 to may how the police department to study the use of taster -- tasers. the new police chief is happy with the commission's change of heart. >> we want the officers to have another tool in their tool box, another tool they can use

together airport in the bay area's biggest name. if you thought its name was a mouth full, it could get longer. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us with a possible new name and a reason for the change. >> reporter: there is a meeting today to discuss putting silicon valley in a place where everyone can make the connection between silicon valley and the airport and that would be in the airport's name. it's to turn the name into the norman silicon valley airport. one man told us he already knew the name of the airport was long but he's still okay with the change on one condition. >> as long halings the code doesn't change and it stays sjc, that's fine with me. >> reporter: the mayor set up a special commit to help the struggling airport which just

completed a $1.3 billion upgrade last summer. the committee meets today to discuss the change. since 2008 san jose's airport has lost a quarter of the passengers and a third of the flights. plus remaining flights can be pricey. there's even talk about outsourcing. it's a gateway to silicon valley. this airport became the mineta san jose airport in 2001. mineta was the new transportation secretary at the time and rep sent the area in congress for 20 years. there is a committee meeting at one to discuss the name change. we've contacted the airport media spokesperson but have not heard back from anybody. reporting live, jade hernandez.

back of the home on a beck ca way. neighbors said the blue tarp closest to the fence is where the body was found yesterday. with permission from that neighbor we shot video over the fence. a missing persons report filed two weeks ago led police and fbi to the backyard of evelyn and dale smith. no one can remember seeing dale smith until september. it was about then that smith, along with two day laborers started building a patio. they are now calling the missing persons report a criminal investigation. neighbors said evelyn told them she hadn't -- hadn't seen him for two months. >> reporter: police and fbi did not need a search warrant to get to the backyard. we have a published report that

said evelyn smith, with her attorney gave police to enter that backyard and conduct that search only if her attorney was there. her attorney was there. now we expect them back today to exhume the body and get it to the coroner's office so it can be identified. maybe we can find out where daily smith has been all this time. kraig debro, reporting live from novato. this morning a vallejo family is without a home and their pet chihuahua is missing after a fire sent family members running for safety. it happened about 2:30 this morning on sheridan street. ktvu's claudine wong is the only reporter on the scene. >> reporter: we'll get to that story in just a minute. neighbors are reacting to it this morning. i first want to show you this o'the crews were out here over the last half our boarding up

the home. in the meantime, this neighborhood is just waking up. a lot of homes are on the block, people just coming out of their houses. i talked to neighbors in the last hour who said they never heard anyone banging on their doors for help. if they had, they would have not hesitated to do just. that twhot boys were inside the home when the fire start. they said they went to every door in the neighborhood. they knocked trying to wake people up. they said their calls for help went unanswered. the boys didn't want to talk on camera but said they were home alone when the fire broke out. the mother works midnight, she was walking home about 2:30 when she saw her boys at nearby fire station. >> when i was coming i saw my boys. they were knocking on all the

neighbors' doors. nobody would open them. >> reporter: firefighters got two calls, one from a neighbor and one from the mother. they say the delay in getting help likely caused the fire to get two to three times bigger. fire investigators are blaming a curling iron left on a mattress as the cause of the fire but she disputes them. >> those curling irons weren't on. i used them. i checked them before if left. >> reporter: back out here live, you're looking at the mattresses that were pulled out of her bedroom. again, they believe the fire started on one of the mattress's. there was a chihuahua puppy. that puppy as not been found. the red cross is helping the family find a place to stay. one important thing to note. firefighters tell us that smoke detectors were chee in this. the boys said the smoke detectors woke them up and the firefighters said that likely saved their lives.

live in vallejo, claudine wong, ktvu news. toyota is recall being another -- recalling another 2 million vehicles because of gas pedals that could get stuck under floor mats. the company announced that this recall includes three more models. the 4 runner, the rav suv and the lexus lx570. this will end the transportation's investigation into possible gas pedal problems. toyota has recalled over 14 million vehicles since 2009. general motors reports this morning its first annual profit. the automaker earned $510 million in the first quarter of the year, putting the annual earnings at 4.7 million.

it filed for bankruptcy make the 2010 numbers more impressive. the company credits the turnaround to cost cutting. this morning's new report on new home sales shows they fell 12.6. the commerce department says 284,000 new homes were sold in january. that's down from 325,000 homes in deals. the analysts were expecting sales to be down about 8.8%. the economists say the lower numbers are a sign the housing industry still hasn't improved. a vote is expected today on new rules for reporting gals pipeline pressures. now this could lead to utility companies like pg&e facing fines. however, critics say the new rules would not require pipeline operators to report an increase during planned pressure surges.

a los angeles cell accused of killing his instructor after a heated classroom argument. the 22-year-old man stormed out of the class, returned with a gun and shot and killed his teacher yesterday afternoon. the deadly shooting took place at a vocational school for future security guards. the indiana attorney deputy was fired. he was fired for suggesting on twitter that wisconsin police use live ammunition on the demonstrators. that tweet was if response to a comment about riot police clearing the protesters. cox said in this day and age his comments were probably not a good idea. wisconsin workers are calling for the biggest day of demonstrators. it follows more than a week of protests over the governor's budget repair bill.
