this is all rain over us right now. heaviest rain down toward san jose. temperatures will stay in the 40s or 50s, but the cold air arrives. >> reporter: right now traffic is affected by the gust distracted winds. our camera shaking a bit. nothing major but you might want to leave the house earlier if you can. no major problems here on the way out to the mccarthur pleasant. looks like you're standing in a puddle in oakland. >> reporter: we've been driving around the bay area looking for problem spots. the freeways are pretty good. any kind of problem areas seem to be a problem this morning. this is an area where we're at

oak and fourth. you can see right here is where the sidewalk starts or ends and the street begins. this puddle we have seen for weeks. it stretches out. it's just one of those kind of continuous issues that obviously if you've been around here you know this puddle that when we drove around the bay area we have talked to people visiting and drivers and we even talked to a truck driver who says he's seen problems and he's been working overnight. >> too fast. >> saw a few spin outs? >> spin outs. people driving too fast. >> different driving a rig as well. >> it's different driving a rig. >> i have an suv so i'm fine. >> how are the other drivers

driving? >> terrible. it's ridiculous. >> reporter: back live out here in oakland it makes its worse for him and a lot of people when dealing with the continuous conditions being seen. this is just one way to showcase the problems we have seen and the recent storms may be a problem today. i don't even know where the drain is in this puddle but we know it's just iting here. san francisco is gearing up for the possibility of snow. the winter storm could bring snow at sea level for the first time in more than 30 years. barricades have gone up to keep heavy trucks off the streets in case of ice. the department of public works has six trucks loaded up with

sand. >> if there's black ice or snow on the road the crews can go along and raise the bed of the truck up and spread a very thin layer on the street. >> the cold snap will be especially dangerous for the homeless. as many as one hundred extra beds will be activated at shelters over the next two cold nights. that means people can show up without reservation. in san jose warming centers will be open this weekend. community centers in tennessee neighborhoods around the city will open their doors between 8 a.m. and noon. that's on saturday and sunday and everyone is welcome. crews are also preparing for treacherous conditions in the santa cruz mountains. right now there's only rain hitting. crews dumped a pile of sand in case they have to start sanding

the highway. cal tran also has snowplows ready to push any know off the road. the stormy weather has delayed the effort to remove a body from a backyard in novato. it's presumed to be 74-year-old dale smith who has been missing for months. police still don't know how he died or what she knows about the death. >> she's very concerned about this. we're not going to disclose her whereabouts. >> police and fbi agents removed evidence from the home that could implicate his wife. the couple has married for 17 years. she lived in the house for months with her husband apparently buried out back. the certainly is underway this morning for a man who robbed bank. take a look. police sent out surveillance

images of the suspect. he's wearing a blue shirt, leather coat and a head wrap. investigators say he walked into the metro credit union on thursday and demanded cash. he was last seen in a white four door car. there's a new twist in a notorious unsolved crime in the south bay. police are examining the new items that may lead them to the disappearance of jnie teen years ago. the items were given to the police by the family. they include women's clothing, shoes and a few strands of hair. a cold hearted criminal is on the loose in walnut creek. police say someone broke into

the home of teenage drowning victim matt miller while his family was attending a memorial service. his family found items missing from the house. miller and his friend died last saturday. public services for the boys will be held this weekend. overnight an earthquake shook san jose county. it hit about 12 minutes after midnight. it had a 3.4 magnitude. there's no reports of any injuries or damages. agents are making an urgent plea for more protection. they are reporting a disturbing spike in takes in recent months. they say they are constantly being shoved. they want a tougher stand against their attackers. they are asking the agency to i

40s near 50s. there's the cold air. you can see it heading down the oregon coast. it's a what swinging in. it's also funneling in a lot of moisture. it's too warm right now for snow. throughout the day we'll see this rain line move south and the cold air come in. the cold air right there up towards lake county. you can see where the green is turning to white. for us we'll see decreasing rain through the morning. temperatures, it's 43. 48 in napa. there's a big difference here. we have a ways to go before the coal air filters in. this low looks like it will end up somewhere right over us, but it's been in training moisture from that system right there. that was the source of our rain. as this low comes in it will start to take this moisture

much colder temperatures this afternoon and evening. a college student is expected to appear in federal court later today after being accused of blowing up the dallas home of former president george w. bush. he was arrested yesterday. the justice department says along with plans to blow up president bush's home he also wanted to blow up nuclear power plants. he came to the united states in 2008. the united nations security council could vote today to place sanctions on libya. last night protesters gathered once again for the demands. overnight republicans in wisconsin state assembly passed

a bill that would take away collective bargaining rights. that brought a sharp response from democrats. the controversial bill now goes to wisconsin state senate, but 14 democrats are still in neighboring illinois refusing to vote on the measure. here in california governor jerry brown is trying to sell lawmakers on his new proposed budget plan. >> when folks say no vote, not american. it's not acceptable and it's not loyalty in california. >> the governor med his case in front of a special committee in sacramento. he's pushing for a special election in which voters will decide on tax rescission. reps say they will fight it.

the debate over benefits has one state watchdogging calling for change. the commission says california needs to freeze pension benefits for current state workers. the agency is recommending california move over to a 401k type of plan for employees. the commission says the changes will make sure that pension costs don't get unstainable. caught on tape. a man says his security cameras were rolling as burglaries tarted his home. he says the video shows two women coming to his front door repeatedly the case his home. later that night three men broke in and ram sacked the place. they got away with electronics. >> just last night police were at the home next door. that homeowner tells us that

police were taking finger prints after a young woman tried to break in wednesday night. four homes have now been targeted in the past three weeks. a livemore woman is expected to serve five years in state prison. 42-year-old christine hubs pleaded no contest to having sex with two teenage boys. one boy was dating her daughter. she must also register as a sex offender for rest of her life. in exchange prosecutors agreed to drop 63 other felon sex counts. she will be formally sentenced next month. google criticized for invading people's privacy, this time children. the company wanted to open up it doodle for google art contest who don't attend schools that already participate in the program and to make sure there were no duplicate entries, they

to bring your chains and patience. the snow is coming down in nevada county and it could bring a couple of feet to the sierra. a dusting is also expected in the sacramento area. we want to take a live look at the road conditions on highway 80. we just checked with cal trance and chains are required on both 80 and 50. you could soon start seeing more mobile food trucks. the department of public works is holding a workshop the talk about the guidelines for vendors. they now only have to get one annual permit from the fire and health department and the fees have been cut by more than half. the state public utilities commission said they are considering of fining muni.

install toll lanes south ward. solo drivers would pay higher tolls when traffic is higher but none of the toll lanes are expected to be running until 2013 at the earliest. right now it's early in the commute. we want to check in with sal because the roads are wet. >> reporter: people may want to get on the road early because the weather isn't really great for driving. let's go outside and take a look at highway 24. we've also had a new accident northbound 101 in marine county. let's go there. there was an accident reported. it turns out to be that accident wasn't as serious. southbound right through here they sent the paramedics and couldn't find any injuries there. that's good news. this morning's dry will be okay at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic here is light so
