here on the port of san francisco this afternoon it might be able to tell if this winter day is different from any other summer day as mark twain once alluded to. people are wearing jackets and scarves and wrapped tightly to keep the heat from escaping the body through the head. the last time it actually snowed here the pictures were just as likely to be in black and white as color. we caught up with a couple who used to be in madison, wisonsin where the low temperature is low today. >> i am more interested in finding it than i am the snow monument. >>th is >> it is a beautiful city and if it snows i will be walking around. >> reporter: for the homeless people there is no other option except to walk around. these men started lining up at 3:00 a.m. this morning. they say they want to make sure

they get a bed tonight unlike last night. the problem is there are only 1500 beds. the church is one of four winter shelters meaning it is only open for a few days a year. after a hot breakfast a homeless man showed us a trick. he puts a blase puts a plastic bag over his socks. >> it would be out on the street and catching a cold and i would probably end up in the hospital with pneumonia so this place actually saved my life. >> reporter: a quick note that church was scheduled to close on the 28th. now they are open for at least a week, possibly a month. it may not snow along the embarcadero or twin peaks but there is a possibility the road might get slick. the cold is a challenge but it is also a chance to see and feel some snow without having to drive into the mountains to

do it. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> community centers will open their doors between 8:00 and noon on saturday and sunday and everyone is welcome. in the santa cruz mountains they are preparing for treacherous conditions. cold temperatures could bring snow and they are ready for it. they dumped a pile of sand there in case they have to sunday the highway and have snowplows ready. snow is more common in some counties north of the bay area and there is a lot of it on the ground right now. we have been receiving photos from viewers. this from gary and darlene in lake port in lake county. they also sent us this photo of the snow. share your snow photos with us by e-mailing them to us. air travel could be

impacted if it does get icy around the bay area this weekend. people remember december 2009 when ice caused several flight delays in oakland and san jose. the same thing could happen this weekend with temperatures plunging below freezing. at oakland international airlines have different ways of responding. >> some airlines de-ice at their gates and others wait until the temperatures rise and if any snow or ice has formed on the air craft they will wait until that has melted. >> sfo says both america and delta airlines have de-icing equipment but admitted it is not effective. instead most airlines will probably wait until the sun melts ice that has formed on planes. it is recommended you call ahead before you go to the airport. >> good afternoon to you. after being hammered with rain and wind this morning believe

it or not partly sunny to mostly sunny the moment. storm tracker shows just the possibility of a few sprinkles out there. if i head south you can see where that line of rain continues. this morning we saw two to three inches of rain and there it is there. that line is the front that continues to sag its way south and as it does leaving behind it the coldest air. in fact that coldest air is still to come. areas long the south bay south good rain in the last couple of hours but we are dealing with the possibility of dry conditions at at least at the moment. i put an arrow to show you the center is still on its way in and will bring us a possibility of showers and tomorrow morning still our best bet at getting snow all the way down to sea level. so we will pinpoint that for you. our temperatures this morning cooling off over earlier today. we will show you what you can expect as you head out and again we are showing you the weekend forecast in just a little bit. >> thank you. the bay was so choppy this

morning that one ferry canceled service. the ferry announced just after 6:00 this morning due to high winds. a ferry manager says he expects service to resume this evening with a 4:35 departure. while there is a mix of sun and clouds right now it was a different story this morning. strong winds and rain created huge problems for commuters. the problems on the roads continues until at least -- as recently as a few minutes ago a car was overturned on its roof on westbound east shore freeway on ashby avenue. you can see it there on the side of your screen. no word on injuries or if this crash was weather related. jade hernandez is live in oakland to show us how the weather tangled and tortured commuters earlier today. good afternoon, jade. >> good afternoon, a half-hour ago the officer sam morgan

right here at chp headquarters told us some drivers failed to slow down. we saw several examples of that. this woman needed assistance after an accident. paramedics took her to the hospital. her smashed toyota was just one casualty this morning. the driver of the other car was also transported to the hospital. no word on the extent of either driver's injuries. near downtown oakland we can show you another example of what the chp dealt with this morning. the result of hydroplaning, the driver of this car spun out near 980 and 27 around 7:25 this morning. >> we did see an increase in vehicle collisions related mostly to driving to fast in the rain. drivers simply must adjust their behavior pattern and slow down. it is not a complex concept.

>> reporter: our crews traveled all over from oakland to san mateo. you can see backed up here at the 92 southbound 101 junction. highway 101 was slow. flooding was the other problem throughout the bay area. now overnight the california highway patrol is warning drivers about black ice. we will bring it back out to oakland. temperatures and conditions could be just right so they say make sure to slow down when you get out on the road. live from oakland, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a winter storm warning is up in the sierra until 4:00 tomorrow morning. here is a look at what it is like right now live pictures along interstate 80 in truckie. quite a contrast from when we saw the sunshine in jade's live report. when the past half-hour cal trans has closed interstate 80 between colfax and truckie, due

toll lanes planned for 101 threw santa clara county could stretch into southern san mateo county. a state lawmaker thinks it should extend. rich gordon is sponsoring a bill to do that. eventually toll lane cost go all the way north to san francisco, but none of this will happen right away since the first toll lanes are not scheduled to open until 2013. an update on a story we have been following the past two days, an hour and a half ago an fbi forensics team unearthed a body buried at a home. they have been working on the

house for several days digging beneath a patio made of paving stones. today they exhumed the body they believe to be that of dale smith, who had not been seen for several months. the body was turned over to the coroner and police do not expect to have a identity or cause of death. his wife is considered a person of interest but she is not a suspect and is not under arrest. the city of oakland and its police force are apologizing to a group they targeted in a police sweep earlier this week. on tuesday morning police went into the mana valor academy along with several other locations, a move police would hope would put a dent in crime. they went to the men of valor. they say they rely on them. none of the men on the list

were found at the academy. ticket agents are pleading for protection and a stronger police presence. they are reporting more physical attacks. they are constantly being pushed. here is what one bart rider told us. >> they have a difficult job, i do understand that, because a lot of times people get frustrated when the tickets don't work. i mean i would not do that job. you are standing out in the cold all day or the heat and you know people are frustrated. >> the agency -- the agents want more security cameras in stations, bulletproof glass in their booths and more police officers on duty and want bart to take a tougher stance against violent riders who attack agents. it is a day of preparation for the astronauts on board the

space shuttle discovery as they make a two day journey to the international space station. ♪ [ music ] >> today's wake up call came at 3:45 our time with the song through heaven's eyes. astronauts are spending the day to see if any pieces of foam did damage when they fell off. they will ready the space suits for spacewalks. this is the final flight for discovery, which began journeying into space in 1984. in wisconsin a controversial measure taking away collective bargaining rights for unions is on its way to the statute after the legislature abruptly passed it early this morning. democrats in the assembly angrily responded after republican members passed the bill, shouting shame. republicans in the senate have vowed to pass the measure as

well but all 14 democrats from that chamber are still in neighboring illinois, that is preventing a vote from taking place. the death toll is now at 113 from the new zealand earthquake. at least 200 people are still missing and feared dead. authorities are going house-to- house searching for survivors. water and power supplies to thousands have been cut and many have been forced to sleep in their cars or tents as their unstable houses sway with the relentless after shocks. if you have never experienced a strong quake here is what one looks like. this new home video of the moment the quake hit in christchurch. you can hear windows shattering and see almost everything inside the home flying through the air. by the time the shaking stops it looks like the house was turned upside down. earlier we were talking about the chance of snow and ice in san francisco. it has happened before. here is the winter blast from

santa cruz mountains a winter weather advisory lasting through tomorrow morning. breezy at times, temperatures cooling off. some of us cooler than where we started the morning. we are going to be very cold into the overnight hours, the snow levels will be lowering. between 4:00 tomorrow morning and 8:00 tomorrow morning is the best chance at seeing the sea level snow. your forecast here i am going to show you what is going to happen here through the evening hours notice that shade of pink, a mix of rain and snow, the shade of white as well as blue an indication of snow right over san jose 4:00 in the morning and hangs around for a few hours. look at how much we have picked up. temperatures at this hour upper 40s, low 50s and we are not going to warm above that. that is going to be our afternoon high for today. upper 40s low 50s in the forecast. scattered showers for tomorrow. our best chance for low snow will be when we wake up

♪[ music ] >> some girl scouts in georgia thought they were going to jail when they were told by a police officer they had to shut down their cookie stand. the girls were set up near a busy road. the problem was they didn't have a proper permit to sell the cookies. >> and the police showed up. i thought he was a customer and somebody came -- my sister came up saying we were in big trouble. >> again the girls thought they were going to be taken to jail. the pool department has apologized and say they were just trying to enforce a city law. coming up on ktvu channel 2
