>> it's about 30 to 40 poles that snapped. power had a helicopter pulled in. got them all changed out. >> reporter: just two hours ago, the last outages were repaired. so now take in this bay area rarity. we're back live now and i want to tell you that as beautiful as that is, the temperatures now are really plunging as bill has been telling us, expect record cold temperatures tonight. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu news. our chief meteorologist bill martin has been tracking that snow all day. john sure did look cold there. where do we stand at this hour. >> we have heavy rain. now we have scattered showers. this area to the north just south of port arenas. pretty sure this is the one, i had reports of snow at sea level which is right on the coast probably came from this cell moving down the coast. so that means as that cold air

is coming in, these cells are potentially bringing snow to sea level which is sort of in the forecast. it's not going to be heavy snow dusting and a few flurries like john mentioned. but the temperatures are rapidly dropping and we're getting in that kind of a situation where we can easily see snow flurries overnight into the morning hours. a freeze warning, that's really the big story in the north bay. that's where it affects the most people, plants, animals and homeless folks. and if you have elderly people. when i come back, later computer model, we will look at the weekend, we'll look at your forecast as well as in your neighborhood. we'll see you back here in the five day. ski resorts are enjoying more than 5 feet of snow tonight. the winter storm is triggered an avalanche warning in the

central sierra and travel restrictions on interstate 80. more than 4-inches are expected tonight. and more than 3 feet in the higher elevations. now here is a look at the conditions on interstate 80 in truckee. as you can see the roadway is covered in snow. cars are getting through but the roadway is not plowed. when we brought you live picture today at noon, i80 was closed between colfax and truckee. we just checked and it is back open at this hour. chains are required on all the mountain highways. ktvu viewers are sending us lots of beautiful pictures. and where there isn't know there's been plenty of rain. stacy e-mailed us this beautiful picture. the talk of the town

tonight is will there be any snow. david stevenson is live and he tells us what the city officials are concerned about and it's not snow. >> reporter: city officials tonight are worried about how drivers will negotiate steep city streets such as this one in potrero hill. icy overnight temperatures could shake steep streets too dangerous tomorrow morning. a partial solution is sand, not only is the department of public works giving residents free sandbags to protect their homes and driveways from flooding. they are also ridding 6-tons of this course black sand to spread if black ice pops up overnight. some of the city's steepest streets may be declared off limits to big trucks. but they are also asking regular sized trucks to stay off the street if conditions

are hazardous. >> beware of the roadway in case the conditions on the roadway get too icy to really stay off the road. >> reporter: safety concerns aside, the build up over whether san francisco will see snow or not is already inspired two parity web pages poking fun at all the hype and all the hoopla. the last time the bay area saw significant snowfall at lower elevations was all the way back in 1976. that is what it looked like that february when ktvu cameras caught folks playing in the snow in marin county. the snow fell after a stormy might of thunder and lightning. as you can see there tpwaáeuf way to a real winter playground. ktvu viewers have been sending us historical photos of the 1976 snowfall. karen forsburg sent us this picture of her daughter and two

friends who made a snow man. it covered an old volkswagen beetle. you can see more of viewers pictures on our website ktvu.com. caltrans has been preparing for the santa cruz mountains as well. temperatures are falling well below levels. here is a clear picture of the conditions right now. as you can see it is clear and appears traffic moving along just fine. but as we showed you on the morning news, caltrans workers had a pile of sand at the ready in case they need to start sanding the highway. snowplows are also on stand by. a frightening crash and fire on the dunbarton bridge is sparking fire fighters to call for changes to what they call a dangerous situation that has gone on for far too long. new at 6:00, ktvu's robert handa is in fremont to tell us about the lack of fire hydrants

on many bay area and california bridges, robert. >> reporter: julie, we're along the dunbarton bridge. on this side of the bridge there is no fire hydrant, that dangerous situation is typical. the fiery crash on the dunbarton bridge tuesday involving a big rig and a stalled car is a situation many bay area firefighters have been concerned about for years because there are no fire hydrants or water systems on the bridge. >> so we had to fight that fire basically like we would fight a wild land fire. we had to shuttle water. kind of like the old days of the bucket brigades. >> reporter: today we were with a supervisor evaluating the dunbarton bridge after the fire. >> the public and the media focused on no water supply on

the bridge, but on this land supply, we have just one fire hydrant. >> reporter: assemblyman frank jeffreys who is examining the issue says obstacles include what agencies will take up the responsibility of construction, repair and maintenance. but he told us today, something must be done. >> when these types of fires occur out on these large spans, we have a public safety issue there and it could jeopardize the structural integrity of the bridge áeut. jeffreys is already talking with bay area fire officials to see if arrangements can be made with transportation and water agencies. but the state budget crisis rules out any legislative solutions. live in fremont, robert handa,. repeat sex offendser kerry verse has been ordered back

into a state mental hospital. in court today, verse admitted to violating the terms of his release. six years ago, verse became the second violent sex offender in california to be released under a conditional program sparking a fire storm of protests whenever he move into a new community. he was chemically castrated but today prosecutors said it's no longer working. the city of oakland and its police department -- wednesday morning police went into the men of valor academy and several other locations looking for several people on a wanted list as part of operation sunrise. none of the men on the list was found at the academy. academy officials say the sweep sent the wrong message about their program and oakland police admitted today that they do rely on that academy to help improve the community. forensic teams today removed body found earlier this week buried in the backyard of a home in me nevado.

our cameras were rolling as crews filled the 4-foot craters where the body was removed. police are still trying to figure out who buried the body. the coroner still has to positively identify the remains but they are believed to be that of dale smith who lived in the home with his wife evelyn. >> certainly a person of interest and someone we would like to talk to going forward. the marin coroner's office says it could be another four to six weeks before they can determine the cause of death. bay area activists today showed their support for people rising up in the streets around the world. >> about two dozen people rallied in front of the ferry building. they say they support the recent up risings in libya, egypt and tenesia. and another rally in support of the libyan uprising is scheduled for tomorrow at the u.n. plaza in san francisco.

in just the past 45 minutes, president obama announced the u.s. is imposing unilat era l sanctions. the president says violence in the country poses an unusual and extraordinary threat to u.s. national security. this comes as the u.s. temporarily abandoned an embassy in the capital of tripoli. gadaphi was seen on state tv calling on crowds to defends their country. a ferry chartered by the u.s. carrying americans including some embassy workers docked in malta today. stormy weather kept the ferry in libya for three days. the ship carried almost 300 people including 157 americans. the state department says a u.s. chartered evacuation flight has also left libya for istambul, turkey. a trouble area is under the microscope tonight. >> reporter: we're starting to

operation. consumer editor tom vacar live in san francisco tonight with the work being done amidst all this scrutiny over safety, tom. >> reporter: frank, less than a day after the stinging criticism came out, nummi started a three day project to repair this critical intersection which has been a subject of state scrutiny. cpuc inspectors say they raised concern in the fall of 2009. today at long last, they are being repaired. other issues regarding the operation of the automatic system keep trains from running into each other as well as the electrical cable systems and tunnels have also be raised. cpuc says nummi has not responded to many issues. >> it just simply isn't the case. >> reporter: john haley is nummi's director. >> over the last several months we've continued to meet with them, share information, being open about allowing them access

viewpoints in this. we're going to be keeping track. one bay area city is taking action to protect itself from governor brown's cuts. the council transferred 10 properties from the housing portfolio to the city. the design protects those assets that could be seized from the state. a watchdog group is recommending increasing employee contributions, increasing the eligibility edge and ending salary inflation right before retirement. the most controversial suggestion is freezing pension benefits for current state employees. tomorrow is your chance to get a firsthand look at a new cruise ship. our cameras caught oceana cruises, marina as it docked this afternoon in san francisco.

it will carry more than 1,200 passengers and tours begin at 11:00 tomorrow morning. a nice day for a cruise but had to be really bundled up. >> you just got a couple of unusual reports, one earlier. snow flurries at sea level right on the water, right at the the ocean. we have reports of snow flurries. so what's happening is this very dry cold air. this is the system right here that's probably bringing the snow flurries to the north coast. there's more of these out here and they are going to slide through over the next six hours or so. we can easily see snow flurries developing in the next few hours. now this would be light stuff. there's nothing powerful out here. but this is the snow flurries and chance of snow we've been talking about. the cold air is here and the chance is here as well. here we go with the freeze warning tonight. probably see a freeze warning again saturday. probably see -- pardon me, sunday. temperatures in the south bay

are going to be cool as well. that's why we have a winter weather advisory still in effect for the south bay down toward mount hamilton. as those cells move on shore, it's cold enough now that as they fall through the air they're going to end up as snow or snow flurries. most likely not a lot of sticking on the ground especially at lower levels. overnight low, you can see those. i mentioned the records, we should easily see record cold tomorrow. record cold again sunday morning and monday as well. the cold air is here, the front has passed through. this was your morning commute, boy it was a mess. the weekend is going to be nice as heck but it's going to be cold, cold, cold in the morning. warmest days on sunday. computer model does this. we're looking for the moisture. the cold air is just getting here. 11:00 tonight, on the peninsula, the computer is saying, you might have the

flurry coming in. then here we go again, 4 :00 a.m., maybe a little -- it's married to that spot on the peninsula. then you see that and we see a clearing out rapidly. another system up north gets in here next week. forecast highs for tomorrow, 40s. that's pretty cool. these will make overnight lows, not too long ago these would have been overnight lows. the five day forecast breaks down like this. certainly icing concerns. the real story here is the freeze warning and the freezing temperatures and record cold the next couple of mornings, that's a big deal, affects a lot of people. >> i thought those highs for a second were lows. >> yeah, the 40s. >> thank you, bill. you got it. google is making it easier for you to find what you are looking for. the change will lower the rankings of what google deems
