any roadway elevated with cold air above and below it is susceptible to black ice. these cars have good reason to crawl. a caution are you tale, a vehicle that spun out and rolled on black ice and is now going nowhere fast. if you've ever hit it, you don't forget. >> just hitting a puddle of water, i mean it brought back memories. you know it, grabs your car and spins you and nothing you can do about it. >> it covers the whole width of the lane. >> reporter: chp shows us it doesn't have to be much of a puddle. this seemed harmless until overnight it hardened into 100 feet of ice right where drivers are picking up speed for the freeway. >> speed definitely plays a factor in it. obviously when you hit black ice, there is not a whole lot you can do. instincts are to slam on the brakes, grab the steering-wheel and try to steer out of it. >> reporter: but that's exactly whatnot to do.

better to coast through it and regain traction. this car slammed into the center divider on highway 37 this morning. one of many places where crews were sent to lay sand on the asphalt. but with dozens of rural roads vulnerable after dark, the sand too often comes after the crash. >> hydro plaining at least you have still have some kind of semblance of steering. when you hit black ice you might as well just be bambi, you know, in the movie, you know, spinning around. >> reporter: the chp recommends what it calls high visual horizon. that's basically just looking out way ahead of you as you drive so you can spot discolouration, dark patches on the road so you can slow down to make sure black ice doesn't sneak up on you. by the way, both of those crashes we showed you happened at 5:00 this morning. reporting live in roader park, deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. some very light snow flurries were seen last night

in parts of san francisco. our camera on twin peaks caught the first snow as it started to fall around 10:45 last night. it was a unique sight in the city, but it didn't stick to the ground. the snow flurries lasted all of about five minutes. the cold weather also brought snow to parts in salinas. a lot more snow there. snow fell on highway 101 creating slippery conditions. snow was also reported earlier this afternoon in santa cruz county near highway 17. well, it may not have snowed as much as some had hoped in san francisco, it did snow in other parts of the bay area. as ktvu's allie rasmus reports that brought out snow seekers to the higher elevations looking for some winter weather. >> reporter: a light bit of snow is enough to render a toddler speechless. >> a little dry snow. can't even make a snowball.

>> reporter: icy enough to force cars to move cautionly on highway 35. a sprinkling of snow blanketed trees and covered the roofs. in the palo alto hills off skyline there was a dusting of snow on some of the trails. it didn't look impressive but it felt frigid. staffers at the reception center said this shelter was slightly over capacity last night. they have 250 beds, 260 people showed up. >> if you can stand this kind of cold weather, more power to you. but for me, personally, myself, having a place like this, you know, is a refuge. >> the community center in san jose was one of ten spots the city set up as a designated warming center. >> some people aren't fortunate to have a warm place right now. so it is great that we are opening up to the public to come in. >> reporter: the library and community center opened an hour early. >> i just opened up the neighborhood services room with additional books and magazines. we are not sure what we are expecting. this is the first time that the city has done this. >> reporter: by late morning

this community center and the nine others in san jose we called said they didn't know of anyone who had come in just to get out of the cold. but workers here said they did get positive feedback and that several neighbors came in to thank them for being open early. in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. [ music ] temperatures are dropping rapidly this evening. in fact, here is a look at the numbers just updated a couple of minutes ago. right now it is 37 in santa rosa and 35 in napa. livermore mid-30s and even san francisco and oakland dropping into the lower 30s at last check. freeze warning another one issued for tomorrow morning between 1:00 and 8:00 for the north bay valleys and also for the east bay valleys. temperatures dropping into the 20s to right around 30 degrees. so 25 to 30 degrees. that will be the eventual spread for these neighborhoods. so once again keep the animals warm and the plants warm. first thing tomorrow morning, coming up highlight the neighborhoods that will be dropping into the 20s.

restore power to more than 16,000 customers in the sierra foothills. the wet and heavy snow didn't make their jobs any easier. crews today were busy trying to reach more than 100 different power outages. for one resident, the lengthy blackout and stormy weather took her by surprise. i have never had this before. we didn't think we were going to be this bad. we didn't believe the news when they kept telling us it was going to be bad. >> pg&e says all of the outages are storm-related and began two days ago. extra crews from as far away as san lewis to help get that power restored. a live picture at the i-80 at the truck scales in truckee. you can see the road appears to be clear but there is snow in the center divide there. very little traffic out there at this hour. the roadway was plowed earlier and there are no chain restrictions tonight on either i-80 or highway 50. where police are investigating a fatal shooting. this video just arrived in the ktvu newsroom. the shooting happened at 23rd and dakota street. when our crews got on the scene they say several investigators were surrounding a car. it is believed that the victim was shot inside the vehicle. neighbors tell us they did not hear anything. the police just called us and said that the unidentified victim died at the scene. also in san francisco, the san francisco medical examiner tonight is working to identify the man shot and killed in the mission district early this morning. a makeshift memorial is now up at 17th and mission streets where the shooting happened just before 2:30 this morning. the memorial identifies the man as aldo, also known as trigger. the police say he died at the hospital. a black suv was seen leaving the area after the shooting but no one has been arrested. the gang task force is investigating. in oakland, police are searching for the suspects who

opened fire on a home injuring the two women inside. the shooting happened just after 3 a.m. in a house at this neighborhood at parker and garfield avenues. the two women were taken to the hospital and are stable. we don't know the extent of their injuries. no arrests have been made and there is no word on the motive. just a few hours ago, the u.n. security council unanimously approved sanctions against libya and the leader. now that americans have been safely evacuated from libya, president obama is speaking out on the libyan leader. leland vitter reports. >> reporter: a strong condemnation from president obama on the violence and unrest in libya during a private phone call with the german chancellor he says the lib january leader must leave now. according to the white house mr. obama said. it's the first time the

president has called on him to step down. the u.s. has revoked visas for top libyan officials and their family members and has frozen assets of loyalists held in american banks. >> we have had a problem in finding the right balance. but the truth is i don't believe in tough rhetoric unless we can back it up. because tough rhetoric without action makes america look weak. >> reporter: this as they pass out weapons to the companies supporters in tripoli. they are sending out patrols to maintain control in the city. tripoli is home to about a third of libya's six million people. but the leader's son went on t.v. and same the city is calm. >> there is a big distortion and deception campaign but, in fact, the libyans are aware of this now. >> reporter: many residents in tripoli tried to stay off the streets to avoid the violent protests and clashes. however in the eastern part of

the country where we are, still many took to the city squares in angry protest to the government. this is fox news. here in the bay area, scores of demonstrators turned out in san francisco today to support the uprising in libya. the group called him a ruthless dictator, accused him of killings and said it was too i am to end his regime. some said they were anxious about what was happening to friends and family in libya. >> we haven't been able to get in touch with my family members in tripoli. so, you know, this is really the least that we can do in terms of coming out here and showing solidarity with our libyan people. >> organizers said it was time governments around the world stop supporting him and take a stand against what thralled repression and violence -- they called repression and violence. in tunisia the country that sparked the uprisings in north africa and the middle east.

at least three people were killed in anti-government protests today. they are asking that the interim government step down and that the current parliament be disbanded. it was just six weeks ago that ali was forced out of office and fled the country. (chanting). >> in yemin more mass protests calling for the president there to step down. adding his voice to the chorus, the leader of one of yemin's most influential and largest tribes. the head of the hashids resigned from the ruling party today and called on ali to step down. he has been in power since 1978. in bahrain an exiled shiite leader returned home to join the protestors there. late tonight mashama renewed his call for the sunni hierarchy that has ruled that country for the last two

[ music ] >> searchers spent this cold saturday going through golden gate park looking for an elderly man who has dementia. new at 10 ktvu's patty lee joins us now where kenneth chin was last seen. patty? >> reporter: well, this neighborhood is on the lookout for kenneth chin. flyers like this one are on every business in this block. they have been distributed by police and by chin's caretakers who reported him missing on thursday. >> if anyone has seen kenneth chin, if you would kindly call 911. >> reporter: she runs the assisted living facility where kenneth chin lives and has been passing out this flyer to residents and nearby businesses since thursday afternoon. >> he was supposed to be home from the senior's center around 3:00. he hadn't been home yet so i

called to see what was going on. and they said he was dropped off. and he wasn't brought to us. he went delivered hand-to-hand to us. >> at golden gate park today, an estimated 40 volunteers responded to the san francisco police department's call for mutual aid. eight search and rescue dogs paced sections of the park closest to chin's home at 35th and balboa. >> there are so many crevices and holes and places that are really full of brush. so we will send him into the brush. send him down into the drainages. >> reporter: but by 5:00 there was still no sign of him i and searchers are openly concerned about chin's welfare. >> his age and also the fact that it has been cold out and he may not be dressed for the weather. that that is one of our biggest concerns and that's why we have a lot of searchers out here looking for him. >> reporter: san francisco police tell me there will not be another wide scale search

tomorrow. but the officers will canvass the neighborhood and check in with neighbors and check out the surveillance video they have collected from local businesses. anything that might give them a lead on where he is. reporting live in san francisco, patty lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> a private memorial service was held today for one of the two walnut creek teenagers who drowned while rafting in a creek last weekend. the family of 17-year-old gavin powell requested that reporters not attend today's service. the classmates held a candlelight vigil for powell and matthew miller on wednesday. the two friends went rafting last saturday in a rain swollen canal in walnut creek. their bodies were found the next day in concord. a retired commercial pilot walked away unscathed today after a small plane lost engine power and then crashed near the downbarton bridge. authorities say the pilot was alone in the single engine cessna 140 when it lost power just after taking off from the palo alto airport at 1:00 this afternoon.

the pilot was trying to turn around to the airport but didn't make it and crashed in the mud just south of the bridge. >> he landed and the aircraft did slip over. fortunately the pie lot is un injuried. >> the fire district is working with state, fish and game and u.s. coastguard officials to handle the fuel and oil that leaked from the upside down aircraft. the fire chief says there was about 21-gallons of fuel and five gallons of oil on that plane when it crashed. the faa and the national transportation safety board are both investigating. there is word tonight oakland city attorney john russo may become alameda's next city manager. the oakland tribune is reporting russo is one of three finalists for the job. he won't confirm or deny the report. he has clashed with mayor jean kwan over proposed gang injunctions and told the city he won't provide legal advice or representation on licensing marijuana farms. a decision on the alameda job isn't expected before the end of march. protestors are spending another night inside the state

capitol of wisconsin after the largest demonstration to date against a plan to do with away withunions for public employees. [ music ] >> police estimated the crowd today at more than 70,000. authorities say they will empty the capitol building tomorrow and some arrests are expected. wisconsin's governor wants union members to pay for half the cost of their pensions and twice their current healthcare premiums. that's equivalent to an 8% pay cut. right now wisconsin's state budget is balanced, but the state is expected to be running in the red by mid-summer. >> well, from washington to new york to right here in california, large rallies were held today to show solidarity with workers there in wisconsin. ktvu's ken prichett was at the demonstration in san francisco. >> reporter: the steps of city hall in san francisco is politically a friendly environment for labor. >> we are part of tens of thousands who are standing in

solidarity with the protestors in wisconsin. >> reporter: this is one of many rallies in major cities and state capitols across the nation echoing two weeks of protests in wisconsin. >> i think it is under threat. and i think we all have to realize that we need a weekend off. that we need a vacation. that we need pensions. and that we need to keep them. >> reporter: wisconsin's republican governor scott walker wants to trip public unions of their right to collectively bargain in order to balance his state's budget. >> collective bargaining has a cost. it has a cost now in terms of healthcare and pension contributions. it has a cost overall in how our governments work at the local level and we have to change that relationship. >> reporter: there is no threat of that happening here in california. but protestors want to see the idea die in wisconsin. at a rally like this it is always difficult to estimate the size of the crowd. the organizers say they expected at least 2,000 people here. and just looking at this crowd,

that seems to be a fair estimate. >> i believe that this will be just a drop in the bucket compared to the number of people that will be on the streets in america if that bill passes and gets signed. >> reporter: in san francisco, this is ktvu, channel 2 news. well, it wasn't union rights but abortion rights that sparked a protest today in oakland. the non-profit pro-choice california organized today's walk around lake merit as part of a nationwide campaign many support of women's reproductive rights. demonstrators are angry with congressional republicans efforts to strip federal funding for planned parenthood. >> the only change that has ever been made in this country haven't been made through wars or guns. you know it's really through people and voices and getting out there and affecting change on your own, whatever you believe, whether you are pro- choice or pro life. it's really just about making a change. >> earlier this month, the

republican controlled house passed a spending plan that included eliminating more than $300 million in federal funding for planned parenthood. the organization is prohibited from using federal dollars for abortion services. but it uses the federal money to provide family planning, birth control, medical and preventive services. >> a single judge will likely hear dozens of lawsuits filed against pg&e stemming from that deadly sanbruno explosion. a san mateo county superior court judge made that decision on thursday. it would mean one judge in san mateo county would hear all 64 suits filed against the utility. the judge's decision must be approved by the california judicial council. the final decision is expected to take about three weeks. eight people were killed in the september pipeline explosion. we have some dramatic video tonight at a washington, d.c. what authorities say caused an elevator to malfunction. boy, take a look, sending people tumbling and causing several injuries. new information tonight

a. >> some 220 miles above earth today, the crew of the international space station welcomed six new visitors who arrived on the space shuttle discovery. this is discovery's 39th and final flight. it launched late thursday afternoon from kennedy space center in florida for what is scheduled to be an 11 day mission. well, a wildfire in the southeast forced the closure of a major interstate today. i-95 near florida was shut down because of all of the smoke from a large brush fire drifting across the lanes. the fire started at 1:00 this afternoon and had grown to 600- acres by nightfall. the winds shifted allowing officials there to re-open the

road. but the florida authorities are standing by in case it happens again. there is no word on when this fire will be contained. a pilot is feared dead tonight after a vintage military jet crashed into the hudson river in new york. it happened at 1:30 this afternoon near the city of kingston 90 miles north of new york city. the british made jet was flying from pennsylvania to kingston's airport. >> ran out, looked, no sputtering, nothing, no variation in the speed. go from horizontal into a vertical, into the river. >> it is something i've never seen before and something i never want to see again. >> the pilot was the only person aboard. his body has not yet been recovered and no word yet on what might have caused that crash. newly released surveillance video shows dramatic scenes from an escalator malfunction last year in washington, d.c. at first footage from the plaza metro station shows people coming off the escalator as

usual. but then you see people running and start tumbling down the speeding machine. many landed on top of each other. several people were hurt. the washington transit authority says the brakes on the escalator failed. it happened last october during the rally to restore sanity event at the national mall. an autopsy is scheduled tore tuesday on that body found buried in a backyard. the remains were removed from a home on rebecca way yesterday following three days of excavation efforts. the body has not formally been identified, but police suspect it is that of 74-year-old dale smith. a neighbor reported smith missing earlier this month. smith lived at the home with his wife, 55-year-old evelyn. the police are investigating what role, if any, evelyn might have played in her husband's disappearance. no charges have been filed in this case. there are concerns tonight after listeria bacteria turned up in tests of broccoli from a tracy-based company. safeway, pavilions and pack and

. a coffee stand seems an unlikely place for a faceoff over gun rights. that's what happened in pleasant hill today. ktvu's mike mibach reports on the debate over california's controversial open carry law. >> reporter: a crisp cool morning in pleasant hill packed with coffee and a colt 1911. >> not so much about guns it is about empowerment, people being able to take care of themselves. >> reporter: on one side a group of open carry supporters. >> not once has an open carrier committed a crime. >> reporter: on the other members of the brady campaign. >> the shooter in tucson was basically a law-abiding gun carrying citizen up until he shot 19 people. >> reporter: from coffee to guns to state legislation, an assemblyman out of southern california has now offered a bill targeting the rights to carry guns. ab-144 would make openly carrying firearms a misdemeanor in california. >> i believe in the right to

protect myself. i believe that violent criminals are out there. >> reporter: this man is with responsible citizens of california, an open carry advocacy group. >> it is a little bit of a kick in the gut to know that the legislatures in the state are going to try year after year and time after time to get something done. but we are fighting an uphill battle but we will fight the battle. >> we are hoping that the bill passes and that would ban the open carry. >> reporter: but they are not waiting to find out so it has called demand dine free in california. >> they have the rights to say no shoes, no shirts, no service. and they can establish a gun- free policy. >> reporter: in pleasant hill, mike mibach, ktvu, channel 2 news. a new medical study suggests air pollution is a significant trigger of heart attacks. researchers concluded about 7.5% of heart attacks are triggered by dirty air. they also looked at other

causes as well and found that cocaine actually triggers about 1% of heart attacks, while coffee triggers about 5%. the study appears in the british lancet medical magazine. >> in iraq armed men stormed and then bombed the country's largest oil refinery killing at least one employee. the refinery is responsible for a quarter of iraq's refining capacity all of which goes towards domestic consumption for gasoline and fuel for power stations. the loyal ministry called the attack part of a terrorist plan to undermine the government's ability to deliver oil. it is common for iraqis to have to spend hours waiting in line for diesel and gasoline, even though iraq has the world's third largest oil reserves. from new zealand today, official word that the death toll from tuesday's 6.3 earthquake hit 146. p.m. but officials say with more than 200 people still missing, they expect that number to rise. the coordinator of the rescue efforts says crews are still in

rescue mode but they are now moving into what he called the miracle stage of the operation. and in poland a cold weather couldn't keep balloon enthusiasts inside. it was a day of grey skies and bright balloons at the winter international balloon festival. 21 teams are participating in the event to promote winter ballooning. an amazing story of survival in washington state to tell you about where a vancouver couple was stuck and stranded in the snow for five days. pat and john norville were found, finally found, and rescued last night after they were spotted by campers. now it all started when they took a drive to see some snow. but they got stuck in a ditch off a secluded forest road with only jelly beans to eat and snow for water. >> so that was my main objective was to keep us hydrated. i think that's really that. and the fleece blanket that we have pretty much saved our lives. >> now, they are diabetic and they didn't have their

medications with them. they say a positive attitude and thinking of their family helped keep them alive. >> san francisco zoo are parents to a foster named miles. gardener found the six-month- old alligator while mowing the lawn of a school in new orleans. the zoo is caring for miles until he can be returned to new orleans where they will help prepare him to be released back into the wild. >> the san francisco fairmont hotel will honor a deal that seemed too good to be true. it offered a luxury package that included lifetime v.i.p. status with the hotel chain for as little as $2,000. after 117 customers snapped up the deal, the offer was mysteriously removed from a website. even though the offer was supposed to continue through next tuesday. those who purchased the package worry that perhaps fairmont wouldn't honor the great deal. but the hotel made good on the

offer and said those who purchased the v.i.p. package would be accommodated at the advertised rate. the fairmont says the offer was a mistake and should not have included the lifetime benefit. showers have moved out of the bay area. but the cold temperatures are still in place. as a result the freeze warning posted for the north bay valleys and the east bay valleys. right now on the maps i can show you on live stormtracker 2 a storm is heading down towards southern california producing rain and snow down there. we have the dropping temperatures here. here is the latest on the satellite with mostly clear skies. we are expecting for the most part fair skies with very cold numbers in the forecast for tomorrow morning. here we go with the overall weather story for tonight. clear and cold. another possibility of record lows. in fact a fairly good bet for monday. mostly sunny skies. a fairly nice afternoon. but the extended forecast and chance of rain. in fact, multiple rain chances showing up in the five day forecast. first thing tomorrow morning showing you the coldest locations in the 20s. napa 26. fairfield 27. and san jose a forecast low of 32 degrees. after that cold start, high pressure returns. plenty of sunshine.

and temperatures maxing out into the 50s. the afternoon hours tomorrow will be warmer than today. and then look what happens into monday. there is another weather system approaching northern california. this will generate more clouds and the chance of a few showers. the highest chance will be up in the north bay, basically south of the golden gate bridge. just a few sprinkles or some drizzle out there. here is the cloud and rain forecast model for tomorrow afternoon. for the most part still sunny. take this into monday morning increasing clouds and scattered rain showers up to the north. continue to put this into motion. there is a possibility up in the north bay. and a slight chance elsewhere, at least in the form of sprinkles or some drizzle. tomorrow morning definitely bundle up at 7:00. 28 to 38 degrees. by lunchtime another recovery here. 45-50. and then by 3:00 mostly sunny skies. there is the eventual temperature range mainly in the 50s. so today we were in the 40s. tomorrow we will warm back up into the 50s. san francisco is 53. san jose tops out at 56. and half moon bay is 52
