for today. temperatures starting out at freezing, even blow in some cases. mostly sunny this afternoon, by tonight, clouds returning for some of us, not as cold with the clouds rolling in and by tomorrow the possibility of a little bit of scattered light rain. we will show you where. we have also got freeze warnings to talk about this morning. highway patrol is investigating two fatal car accidents this morning, one happened on 101 in east patality, the second -- palo alto, the second on interstate 80 in vacaville. officers say it was around 3:00 this morning when a car slammed into a tree and burst into flames killing the two women inside the vehicle. the cause remains under investigation. and just about one hour before that crash, one man was killed in another serious -- and another seriously injured after their car overturned in east palo alt witnesses say the driver appeared to be racing against another car when he hit the sound wall and crashed onto the university avenue on-ramp.

still unclear whether black ice played a role in any of those crashes but the chp is warning drivers to watch out for frozen water on the roadways. last night officers showed ktvu it does not take much for black ice to form. usually it's a puddle that hardens overnight. >> the ice is unforgiving to all vehicles and all types of drivers. you can be a killed driver, a brand-new driver. it's going to basically put you in your place if you're not driving safely. the highway patrol says it responded to several black ice- related incidents around the bay area yesterday morning including the one you're looking at on highway 37 in vallejo. if you hit black ice, officers say it's best to coast through it until you regain tractions. warming centers will be open again in the south bay for those looking to get out of the cold. there's a list on your screen of the 10 warning centers in

san jose that will open their doors at 8:00 this morning, stay open until noon. san francisco police say there is still no sign of an elderly man who has been missing now for three days. 73-year-old kenneth chin was last seen on thursday in the area of 35th avenue and balboa. allie rasmus is live in san francisco this morning with the latest on the search. allie. we are in golden gate park and about a black and a half up the street from where we are standing is the assisted living facility. search efforts to find him have been focused in this section of golden gate park in the past 24 hours. the man they are looking for is 73-year-old kenneth chin. his caregivers at the assisted living home walked him to a bus stop on thursday. that bus was supposed to take him to a senior center for the day but he never returned. we went to chin's assisted living home early this morning. no one there was available to give us an update on the search

or any updates on his whereabouts and what they are planning to do but the woman who runs the home did talk to ktvu yesterday about her concerns for chin's whereabouts. >> his age and also how -- the fact it's been cold out and he may not be dressed for the weather so that has been one of our big concerns. that's why we have a lot of searchers out here looking for him. >> reporter: about 40 people volunteered to help police search for chin in golden gate park yesterday evening. several search and rescue dogs also part of that effort and according to san francisco police, search crews won't be out here at golden gate park again this morning but instead officers are expected to check in with several residents in this neighbor, canvass the neighborhood, talk to people and see if anyone has seen this missing man, expected to do that later on this morning. reporting live in golden gate park, allie rasmus. a memorial service will be held in walnut creek at 3:00 this afternoon for matt miller, one of the two teenagers who drowned in a rafting accident last weekend.

his best friend, 17-year-old gavin powell was remembered yesterday at a private memorial service. powell's family requested that the media not attend and classmates from las lomas high school held a vigil for powell and miller on wednesday. the two friends went rafting last saturday in a rain swollen creek in walnut creek. their bodies were found the next day. an autopsy is scheduled for tuesday in a body found buried in a novato yard. the body has not been identified but police suspect it is 74-year-old dale smith. a neighbor reported him missing earlier this month. no charges have been filed in the case but novato police say they are investigating what role, if any, evelyn may have placed in her husband's disappearance. this morning south san francisco police are looking for two men who stole a woman's engagement ring. it happened before 9:00 friday

morning near airport boulevard and baden avenue. officers say two men cornered the 24-year-old victim and demanded money. the victim says that's when one of the men grabbed her arm and removed the ring. both men are being described as in their 20s and about 5'8" tall, one had a short goatee and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a dark colored beanie and dark jeans. anyone with any information is asked to call the police. the world's fastest yacht is scheduled to arrive in the bay area this week. the u.s.a. 17 is too tall to sail underneath the golden gate bridge so it will arrive in san francisco in a cargo ship and stored until it is ready to be displayed. its arrival will symbolize the beginnings of preparations for america's cup. the u.s.a. 17 won the cup for larry ellson's bmw oracle racing team last year. good morning to you.

giving you a live look at a little bit of haze out there this morning, but plenty of sunshine as the sun has risen and we are looking at sunny skies for today, cold out there this morning, if you're headed out to the big nor cal yacht fest going on for today, it's going to be nice, warmer than yesterday, but still chilly enough to bring along that jacket. the freeze warning, back with us this morning, no surprise, right, for the north bay. hills as well as the valley and the east bay. lasting for the next looks like 50 minutes or so. our temperatures ranging from the mid to upper 30s -- or upper 20s, i should say, to low 30s this morning, some of those hanging right about freezing and a few records to be broken for this morning. get a load of this. we have got napa this morning at 28 degrees, tying a record set back in 1942. san rafael not just yet, sfo, no there but oakland sitting at 37 degrees and breaking aan old -- an old record set back in 1927. your satellite and radar view

yesterday those union protesters received some star studded help, several hollywood celebrities belonging to the screen actors guild union showed up in madison to show their solidarity, the crowd included bradley which theford of west wing fame and 90210 gabriel carterres. >> i always have loved this city because it's always understood that you don't get glock ras, you have to make it yourself. -- democracy. you have to make it yourself. >> it passed a controversial bill that would take away collective bargaining rights on friday. the bill is now going to the state senate where 14 democrats still remain in hiding as they try to avoid a vote. across the country, thousands of people took part in several rallies to show their support for the wisconsin employee unions. and one of those rallies took place right here in the bay area yesterday. a large crowd gathered on the steps of san francisco city

hall. state employees who took part admit there's no real threat of collective bargaining rights being taken away here in california but they say they still wanted to show their support. the rally also brought out supporters from the private sector. >> you know, we have been through bankruptcy at my company, we've lost pay, we have lost parts of our pensions, but we still have a union, we still collectively bargain and we have that right. >> estimates put yesterday's crowd at about 2000 people. 64 lawsuits filed against p g&a will be heard by one judge. a judge made that decision on thursday but it must be approved by the california yu judicial council. the final decision is expected to take about three weeks. a pipeline explosion killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. later today the academy awards will take place at the kodak theater in hollywood and already the red carpet has been

rolled out. the winners have been picked and the envelopes have been sealed. the only thing missing is the nominees. casey stegall in hollywood tonight with a preview of tonight's big show. >> reporter: good morning to you. i know you guys are dealing with unusually cold weather up there in san francisco, same story down here in hollywood. it's about 38 degrees. we've had wind gusts of 30 miles an hour. we are hoping it warms up or i think there are going to be an awful lot of ladies that are going to be quite chilly in their evening gowns but this is no doubt hollywood's biggest night. 10 nominations for best picture this year, an animated flick is included in that, "toy story 3" but it seems like all of the preoscar buzz is surrounding "the king's speech," up for 12 nominations this year, including best picture, best actor, best supporting actor and actress. no doubt it has been one busy week here outside the famed kodak theater rolling out the 500-foot long red carpet, setting up the thousands of lights and running miles of

the nation's governors are in washington, d.c. this week for their annual meeting. the meeting kicked off yesterday and this year's focus is expected to be president obama's health care reform package, the fallout from the ongoing wisconsin union battle and a possible government shutdown. president obama met with democratic governors yesterday and he scheduled -- he is scheduled to meet with the full group tomorrow. california governor jerry brown not attending this year's meeting. in phoenix the tea party is hosting its first ever national policy conference this weekend. this meeting is helping mark

the second anniversary of the conservative movement. former minnesota governor and possible presidential candidate tim pawlenty spoke and used it to criticize president obama. >> wisconsin does not need a lecture from somebody who has never balanced a budget in his life. >> more than 2000 people were at this weekend's tea party meeting. new information on a story we first brought you yesterday on mornings on 2. public health officials now say travelers and workers at four u.s. airports may have been exposed to measles. a passenger who flew from london to washington dulles airport back on february 20th later confirmed to have the infectious disease. two days later she flew on a southwest flight from baltimore to denver and then onto albuquerque, new mexico. authorities had been trying to notify the travelers who sat close to the infected passenger on those flights. and there is a fundraiser today for the family of a 2-

year-old girl killed while walking in a runner park crosswalk with her mother. cali murray was hit and skilled december 1st near sunrise park. her mother was seriously hurt. we visited with the mother last week as she recovers in a rehabilitation hospital. the driver who hit the two, an 18-year-old college student has admitted she was using her cell phone at the time of the crash. as of yet no charges have been filed. today's fundraiser is from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00. it is at sally tomatoes banquet hall in roaner park. there will be an art auction, no host bar and potluck. a san rafael man accused of attacking police officers and threatening restaurant goers will be in court tomorrow. the 23-year-old walked into the soul food restaurant on fourth street friday night and threatened customers with a fork. police say roberts then punched one officer and kicked another in the head while they were trying to arrest him. another man told police that roberts also tried to rob him at an atm machine minutes

earlier. well, a news reporter became part of a story in seattle when he tried to break up a fight. it was all recorded by his camera man. reporter shomari stone was working on a story when he noticed a fight breaking out nearby. a man was being pummeled right there by someone accusing him of robbery so stone jumped in as his camera man kept rolling. the perpetrator eventually left the scene and the man who was hit was not seriously hurt. the sun up on this sunday morning does not necessarily mean that it is warm outside. let's check in with rosemary on the current temperatures. hi. >> near record lows once again this morning, upper 20s, low 30s, not out of the question as you get outside this morning. but by the afternoon we will be warmer than yesterday, slightly below average, you can see all the sunshine, wall to wall sunny skies expected for today. i want to show you the rain forecast, though, because it is on its way back, giving you a look at the evening here and notice the clouds beginning to roll in, the north bay could see these clouds probably about

9:00, 10:00. tomorrow morning, could wake up with a few scattered showers especially the north bay north of the golden gate area, looks to stay north of i-80 but perhaps along the coast a few sprinkles. run you through your monday. it's going to stick to the north, but that chance for light rain will be on and off. tuesday it looks like it takes a hike further north, santa rosa to the north most of us remain dry. but tuesday night into wednesday better chance of rain with the heaviest rain expected and the most steady rain expected on your wednesday. this storm is not going to be as cold as what we saw. our snow levels anywhere from 4500 to 6000 feet and notice our temps will be warmer tomorrow morning, starting the day in the mid-30s, maybe even upper 30s in most cases. 56 degrees in the afternoon and then our overnight lows shifting back into the low 40s, upper 50s as we move through the week but again it's going to be on and off soggy. back to you. >> thanks. this morning we are hearing from a washington state couple who survived being stuck in a snow bank for five days. john and pat norville hit an

ice patch on a road last sunday and slid into a snow covered ditch. they were unable to get a signal on their cell phones and had very little food. their family eventually reported them missing and the couple was rescued on friday by people camping nearby. >> we had no food. i had a small bag of jelly beans and we had two water bottles with water, and we had to keep filling them with snow and letting them melt back down into water. >> the norvilles both have diabetes and are dependent on insulin. emts checked out the couple and say they are in good health despite going days without their medicine. 7:26. the surprising place rats may be taking up shelter in this cold weather and it may be costing you a lot of money. plus the search for a -- with another day of chilly weather, concerns about a missing san francisco man continue to grow.

today's search will be scaled down a bit. allie. >> reporter: we are in golden golden gate bridge park. this park is where search crews have focused their efforts. it's another morning of gold weather, you can see there is frost on the ground here at golden gate park, right now it's about 38 degrees. and when 73-year-old kenneth chin left, when his caregivers last saw him, they say he wasn't dressed for this kind of weather. about a block 1/2 away from this park entrance is the assisted living facility chin has lived in for the past five years. we went by there early this morning to see if they had any updates on the search today. no one there was available to talk to us. but chin's caregivers say they last saw him on thursday when they walked him to a bus stop that was supposed to take him to a senior center for the day. he never returned. >> he was supposed to be home from the senior center around 3:00 and we -- he hadn't been home yet so i called to see what was going on and they said

incidents around the bay area yesterday morning including this one on highway 37 in vallejo. warming centers will be open again in the south bay for those looking to get out of the cold. here is a list of the 10 warming centers in san jose that will open their doors this morning from 8:00 a.m. to noon, they include the al ma din, evergreen and other centers. they are investigating a shooting in the -- pa temporary row hill -- patrero recreati center. the victim later died at the scene. neighbors told us they didn't hear anything and no word this morning on if police have anyone in custody or what led up to that shooting. a memorial marks the spot in san francisco's mission district where a man was fatally shot. as reported yesterday here on mornings on 2, the victim was shot on 17th and mission street early saturday morning. police say he died at the hospital. a black suv was seen leaving that area after the shooting but no one has been arrested

and the gang task force is now investigating. the city of vallejo is trying to give a boost to its ferry service by taking buses off the road. city officials say buses that travel to san francisco are competing with its bay link ferry. a proposal being considered would eliminate 11 weekly bus routes from vallejo to the city. the public will get its first chance to weigh in on the proposed changes during a meeting at 6:00 p.m. this tuesday at vallejo city hall. the cold weather isn't just affecting people this weekend. rodents are trying to keep warm too, and mechanics say the hood of a car or truck tends to be a popular spot for rats to hang out during frigid temperatures. and that can result in a pricey repair bill if they stay too long. mechanics say the rodents can chew on everything when they are inside the hood of a car, including electrical wiring and hoses. some repair bills have topped $10,000 or more. traffic conditions are finally easing up in the lake

tahoe area. here is a live look at interstate 80 at truckee. we just checked in with caltrans, chains not required at this hour on any of the major roadways in that area. many communities in the foothills, though, are -- in the sierra are still without power at this hour. there are more than 300 outages affecting almost 20,000 customers. most of them are being reported in nevada county near lake tahoe. some people have been without electricity for as long as two days. at this hour, pg&e crews are working on restoring the power. good morning to you. another beautiful looking day across the bay there. you can see just a little bit of haze out there, plenty of sunshine, alcatraz there in the back drop. if you're getting outdoors, bundle it up. it's another freezing start in most cases. we have an advisory to talk about in just a moment. this afternoon under the sunny skies we will be warmer by a few degrees, temperatures ranging in the low to mid, maybe even upper 50s by the end

of the day. the freeze warning expiring in the next half hour or so, sitting in the 20s and low 30s this morning, the north and east bay valleys and some of our hills as well so that to be aware of at least for the next half hour and then we will continue to see a nice little climb through the morning hours, it will be gradual by the afternoon it will feel pretty nice. you will need your jacket out there. 28 degrees in santa rosa this morning, napa tying a record 27 degrees at this time, 34 in oakland as well as hayward, 41 degrees reported at san francisco and we do have light winds expected throughout the day. mostly sunny skies, highs in the 50s, but change is on the way. as early as tonight and into tomorrow, the possibility of clouds, especially for the north bay and that chance for rain sliding in on monday, it will stick right along the north bay, light rain possible monday, perhaps into tuesday, mostly of -- most if us if not all of us expected to get wet tuesday night into wednesday. let's enjoy today, dry conditions sitting in the mid to upper 30s, low 40s through

the 9:00 hour, 44 to 48 noontime hours, and in the afternoon 51 to 56. around the neighborhood here, 53 expected in santa rosa, 52 for vallejo, this afternoon, 53 in berkeley, widespread low 50s. san jose looks to be the warm spot on this map, 56 for san jose this afternoon, mid-50s mountain view, redwood city and 54 degrees expected in los gatos. five-day forecast, there are the changes to come by monday, the clouds increasing, not as much sunshine. with this storm, our temperatures are actually going to warm, mid-30s expected as we start tomorrow morning, so still chilly, but not as cold as what we have seen over the last couple of days, 56 expected in the afternoon, scattered showers possible in the forecast, little bit of light rain here and there monday, tuesday. the better chance for rain comes wednesday. mid-40s as we start the day, 58 in the afternoon, so actually just below that seasonal average for this time of year. we are mostly cloudy, dry on thursday, where we can -- what we can expect for next weekend

and we will pinpoint the wet weather coming in just a little while. 7:37. a retired commercial pilot is safe at home this morning. one day after his small plane crashed near the dunbarton bridge. it happened yesterday afternoon shortly after the man took off from the palo alto airport. the pilot says the engine lost power causing him to crash in the mud just south of the bridge. that plane overturned after the crash landing but the pilot managed to get out safely. >> we were happy that the pilot was able to keep it out on the bay side and out of our residential communities or any residential communities. >> about 21 gallons of fuel and 5 gallons of oil leaked from the plane when it crashed. the fire district is working with state fish and game and the u.s. coast guard to handle that leak. this morning hazardous material crews are cleaning up a toxic mess after a freight train derailed in washington state. it happened late last night in university place about an hour south of seattle. a railroad official says 14 cars went off the tracks, some of which were carrying sodium

others with failing immune systems. target will open one of its two new east bay stores in a few days. a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on tuesday. the mayors of oakland and emeryville are expected to attend. the store will officially open for business on wednesday. a new target store in east dub palestinian will -- dublin will open in october. both of those stores expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the east bay. and starting tuesday, transit riders who use clipper will have to put a minimum of $5 on their card. clipper officials say they decided to raise the minimum from $2 to $5 because of a loophole that allowed passengers to ride for free. riders who do not want to pay $5 can still buy single ride or round-trip tickets. santa rosa police will be out this week patrolling for red light violators. there's going to be a special enforcement area near cleveland avenue and guerneville road that begins tomorrow and runs

through march 6th. officers will also be looking for speeders and people talking on those cell phones while they are driving. the new bay bridge will be one step closer to completion this week. want to take you outside, sun is bright this morning. that is of the bay bridge. you can't see it through the glare but tomorrow morning construction crews are going to lift the fourth set of self- anchored suspension towers into place. if you've driven the bay bridge you've seen that structure, it stands at 480 feet or actually will after this next extension put on. it's final feet will be 525 feet. the crews are expected to work around the clock tomorrow to lift that in place. the project is expected to be completed in 2013. now, sun is shining out there. >> the sun is shining out there. it's a very bright picture. doesn't necessarily mean that it is warm, but at least it's not raining, rosemary. >> you're right. you're going to need your sun shades and a thick jacket. we are freezing again this morning with the freeze warning for the north and east bay hills expiring in the next 10 minutes or so.

can see a lot of them in costume there jumped into that frigid water, included in that crazy group we are looking at was mark tamayo and pete lupeti. that water is a chilly 51 degrees. newly released surveillance video shows dramatic scenes from an escalator malfunction last year in washington, d.c. at first footage from the plaza metro station shows people usual but then you see people start to tumble down the speeding machine. many landing on top of each other and several people were hurt. a washington transit authority says the brakes on the escalator failed. it happened last october during the rally to restore sanity event at the national mall. a shooting at an illinois gun show is under investigation this morning. authorities say a man picked up a gun at a vendor's booth yesterday to take a closer look and it went off, firing one bullet in the air.

it's going to drop our way tonight into tomorrow and unsettled weather in the forecast for next week. we will pinpoint that, show you what you can expect for your sunday coming up. new this morning, the california highway patrol is investigating two fatal car crashes, one happened on interstate 80 in vacaville. officers say it was around 3:00 this morning near pene adobe road when a car slammed into a tree and burst into flames killing the two women inside the vehicle. the cause remains under investigation. and just about one hour before that crash, a man was killed and another seriously injured after their car overturned on 101 in east palo alto. witnesses say the driver appeared to be racing against another car when he hit the sound wall and crashed onto the university avenue on-ramp. and it's still unclear whether black ice played a role in any of those crashes but the chp is warning drivers to watch out for frozen water on the roadways. now, last night officers showed ktvu the road and says it doesn't take much for the black ice to form.

the last five years. but here in golden gate park where the search efforts have been -- describing the man that they are looking for. now, according to those fliers, kenneth chin is either 73 or 74 years old. chin's caregivers at the assisted living home say that they were walking him to a bus stop about -- on thursday, that bus was supposed to take him to a senior center. he never returned. chin's gary differs say -- caregivers say he has dementia and needs his medication. we went to the facility early this morning. no one available to give us an update on the search or what they were planning or expecting later today but the woman who runs the assisted living facility did talk to ktvu's yesterday about her concerns for chin's whereabouts. >> his age and also the fact it's been cold out and he may not be dressed for the weather, so that has been one of our big concerns. that's why we have a lot of searchers out here looking for him. >> reporter: now, about 40 people volunteered to help police search for chin in

shift memorial is set up at 17th and mission streets where the shooting happened early saturday morning. police say the man later died at the hospital. a black suv was seen leaving the area after the shooting but no one has been arrested. the gang task force is investigating. one judge will likely hear dozens of lawsuits filed against p g&a stemming from the deadly bruno explosion. a san mateo superior court judge made that decision on thursday. it would mean one judge would be responsible for hearing all 64 suits filed against the utility company. that decision must still be approved by the california judicial council and a final decision is expected to take about three weeks. eight people were killed in that september pipeline explosion. a retired commercial pilot is safe at home this morning, one day after his small plane crashed near the dunbarton bridge. it happened yesterday afternoon shortly after the man took off from the palo alto airport. the pilot says the engine lost power causing him to crash into the mud south of the bridge.

cause breathing problems and skin burns. burr-- one of the cars is leaking. the area of derailment is now contained. no one was injured in the derate. the nation's governors are in washington, d.c. for their annual winter meeting. that meeting kicked off yesterday and this year's focus is expected to be president obama's health care reform package, the fallout from the ongoing wisconsin union battle and a possible government shutdown. president obama met with democratic governors yesterday and he is scheduled to meet with the full group tomorrow. california governor jerry brown will not be there. he is not attending this year's meeting. if lawmakers can't agree on a budget deal, washington would come to a stand still but this is not a complete shutdown. for example the fbi, border patrol and coast guard would remain open. the post office will continue in operation and even the social security administration would still be able to send out

checks to recipients. we have developing news this morning. we just learned minutes ago that former speaker of the house newt gingrich may be running for president in 2012. sources are telling the associated press that the republican will start taking steps towards a run in the next two weeks. meanwhile this morning the "atlanta journal-constitution" is reporting gingrich plans on announcing an exploratory committee within the next 10 days. if all that's true gingrich would be the first republican to officially announce a white house run in 2012. federal investigators say they will not finish their final report on the bp oil spill by the one-year anniversary of that disaster. the federal panel had hoped to have their report completed by april but delays in testing the blowout preventer have forced officials to extend the deadline. a final report on the rig explosion and oil spill in the gulf of mexico last april is now expected in july. a texas school district is taking a different approach to close its budget gap by paying teachers to quit.

san francisco police continue to search this morning for an elderly man who has been missing since thursday. welcome back to mornings on 2, i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. kenneth chin was last seen in the city's outer richmond district near 35th and balcony bal -- balboa. allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: right now we are about a black a-- ablock 1/2 away is the assisted living facility where this man has been living for the last five years. this park is where search and

rescue crews tried to focus their effort to try to find him. throughout the area there are fliers posted with a description of this missing man, kenneth chin. some of the fliers say he is 73 years old, others say 74. but they are asking the public to be on the lookout for this man. kenneth chin's caregivers at the assisted living home haven't seen him since thursday. that's when they walked him to a bus stop that was supposed to take him to a senior center and he never returned. now, we went to the facility early this morning. the assisted living center where he lived. no one there available to give us an update on their search efforts this morning but the woman who runs the facility did talk to ktvu yesterday about her concerns for chin's whereabouts. they say he suffers from dementia and he needs his medication. search and rescue organizers are also worried. >> his age and also how -- the fact it's been cold out and he may not be dressed for the weather so that has been one of our big concerns. that's why we are -- we have a lot of searchers out here looking for him.

>> reporter: now, yesterday about 40 people volunteered to help police search for chin in golden gate park in the evening, several search and rescue dogs also part of that effort and according to san francisco police, search crews won't be out in full force again today. however, officers are making the rounds through this area. they are talking to several neighborhoods and i just spoke with an officer five minutes ago, this is his patrol car over here. he had a stack of fliers that he was planning to hand out -- excuse me -- he's a sergeant. i just spoke with a sergeant out here. he had a stack of fliers with him and he plans on going out along with, he said about half of the entire richmond station is out today helping and trying to find this man, this missing man. reporting live in golden gate park, allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. the highway patrol is investigating two fatal car accidents this morning. one happened on interstate 80 in vacaville. officers say it was around 3:00 this morning near penye adobe

road. the car slammed into a tree killing two people inside that vehicle. about an hour before that crash, one man killed and another seriously injured after a car overturned on 101 in east palo alto. witnesses say the driver appeared to be racing another car when he hit the sound wall and crashed at the university avenue on-ramp. a memorial service will be held in walnut creek this afternoon for one of the two teenagers who drowned in a rafting accident last weekend. matt miller will be remembered today at 3:00. his friend 17-year-old gavin bow was remembered yesterday at a private service. pow's family wanted the media not to attend. the two friends went rafting last saturday in a rain walnut their bodies were found the next day in concord. there is a public fundraiser today for the family of a 2-year-old girl killed while walking in a rohnert park

crosswalk with her mother. she was killed on december 1st near sunrise park. her mother is seriously hurt and still recovering in a rehabilitation hospital. we visited with her last week. she and her husband are talking about the crash in an effort to prevent something like that from happening again. the driver who hit them, an 18- year-old college student has admitted she was using her cell phone at the time of the crash. the da's office is still considering whether or not to file charges. today fundraiser is from 1:00 until 5:00 at sally's tomatoes ain roanert park. distracted drivers will also be one of the things targeted by santa rosa police this week. there's going to be a special enforcement area near cleveland after and guerneville road. it begins tomorrow and running through march 6th. officers will be looking for red light violaters, speeders and people talking on their cell phones while driving. oakland police continue to search this morning for the suspects who opened fire on a home injuring two women inside. it happened after 3:00 a.m. yesterday in a house in this

neighborhood at parker and garfield avenues. the two women taken to the hospital. police have not released the extent of their injuries. an autopsy is scheduled for tuesday on the body found buried in a novato back yard. the remains were removed from the home on rebecca way on friday. that followed three days of excavation efforts. the body has not been formally identified but police believe it's that of 74-year-old dale smith, a neighbor reported him missing earlier this month. smith lived at the home with his wife and novato police are investigating what role, if any, she might have played in her husband's disappearance. no charges have been filed. the new bay bridge will be one step closer to completion this week. tomorrow morning construction crews will lift the fourth set of cell angered suspension -- self-anchored suspension towers in place. the structure will stand at 480 feet just short of its final height of 525 feet. crews are expected to work around the clock tomorrow to lift it into place. the entire project is expected to be completed in 2013.

in a rally to show their support for wisconsin employee unions. the large crowd gathered on the states of san francisco city hall yesterday. state employees who took part admit there's no real threat of collective bargaining rights being taken away here in california, but they say they still wanted to show their support. the rally also brought out supporters from the private sector. >> you know, we've been through bankruptcy at my company, we've lost pay, we've lost parts of our pensions, but we still have a union, we still collectively bargain and we have that right. >> estimates put yesterday's crowd at about 2000 people. a nonprofit in texas is trying to help people who they say do not get a lot of scholarship opportunities. white men, the program is being formed by a student at texas state university. they say there are scholarships geared toward helping minorities and women who attend college but white males are usually left out. starting this summer the group will provide as many as 500 --

that's a seattle news report who became part of the story after he jumped in to try to break up the fight. it was all recorded by his camera man. that reporter show mari -- shomari stone was nearby working on a story when he ran in to help. the man was being pummeled by another guy accusing him of robbery. the search has resumed this morning for a pilot who crashed into a river. it happened yesterday afternoon in kingston, new york. a 38-year-old monday was trying to land his plane at an airport but something went wrong and he ended up crashing into the hudson river. officials say the pilot likely did not survive the crash. the national national transportation safety board has launched an investigation into the cause. a sailor is recovering from a gunshot wound this morning

after leading military police on a high-speed chase. it happened at the u.s. naval base in san diego. officials say two men were pulled over early yesterday morning on suspicion of drunk driving. the two then drove off and smashed into two police cars before trying to escape out of a gate. as they headed towards another police car, officers shot at the vehicle hitting one of the sailors. he is expected to survive. a shooting at an illinois gun show is under investigation this morning. authorities say a man picked up a gun at a vendor's booth yesterday to take a closer look at it. it went off firing one bullet into the air. the bullet then bounced off a pole and hit two men, one of them in the chest. >> in other areas have hosted this show probably for the last 25 or 30 years and i've been on 30 years myself and this is the first situation that i can recall where we've had such an incident. >> law enforcement authorities in illinois say vendors are not allowed to have loaded weapons

at gun shows. an arizona lawmaker avoided arrest this weekend even though he's tied to a domestic violence case. on friday phoenix police arrested the girlfriend of the state senate's majority leader after a reported fight between the two. but the majority leader was able to walk away because he has immunity. arizona's constitution says lawmakers have immune from arrest while they are in session. but the senator could face charges later if an investigation finds wrongdoing. and sacramento county dozens of goats were struck and killed last night after they wandered into traffic on interstate 5. the incident caused a seven car pile-up and snarled traffic for hours. one driver was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries. the goats came from a nearby farm and police are now trying to find out how they ended up on their freeway. a massachusetts company says it can create biodiesel fuel using the same ingredients that make gas grow. the company says it has invented a genetically engineered organisms that
