cherry glen road. the female driver of a toyota sedan was driving eastbound when for unknown reasons she drove off the road. the car slammed into a tree and burst into flames. the driver and her passenger were killed. their identities have not yet been released. just about 30 minutes before that crash, that man was killed and another seriously injured after their chevy malibu slammed into a sound wall. the highway patrol is asking anyone with information to give them a call. a three day hearing into last month's san bruno explosion. the national transportation board hearing is the first time pg & e has talked publicly about the explosion. the utility will likely be

forced to answer questions about the safety of it system. in cleveland, ohio, a natural gas line exploded igniting a fire sending smoke and flames 30 feet into the air. there are reports the line was repaired yesterday, but that a new break occurred today. crews had the fire controlled by 6:00 tonight. the cause of that leak is under investigation. no injuries were recorded. about 200 union workers are still occupying wisconsin's state capital tonight and police are letting them stay. although some protesters left this afternoon, many ignored a request to leave so the rotunda could be cleaned after two weeks of sit ins. instead the clean up happened with the protesters in place. the senate still lacks a quorum

with 15 state senators still hiding in illinois. >> they don't have to vote for it, they don't have to support it but they need to come back and do their job. >> reporter: the governor says the bill is vital to close the budget gap for the fiscal year. tomorrow morning, crews are supposed to start installing the newest section of the bay bridge. they will list the four sets of towers storm. crews are expected to work around the clock until the towers are set. expect for a possible visual distraction this phase of construction will not affect traffic. the entire project is expected to be completed by 2013. old head stones in gold country have been discovered to contain the n world. three dozen african american miners are buried at the relocation cemetery near fulsome lake. the graves were moved there back in 1954 to avoid being

take a look at this, some impressive pictures this is a solar flair on the sun. this eruption occurred last thursday and lasted about 90 minutes. the eruption is the latest in a series of strong sun storms this month. the blast was directed away from earth and was not expected to disrupt satellite systems. in chile today there were memorials and protests to mark one year since an 8.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 500 people. in one central chilean town. protesters set fires demanding that the government do more to rebuild the country. the president acknowledged the discontent but said the government is doing everything humanly possible to help people rebuild their communities. it's estimated 220,000 homes were destroyed in the quake and

the insuing tsunami. in new zealand the country has buried the first victim of the quake. the death toll from the 6.3 quake now stands at 148. officials say they expect the toll to rise to more than 200. federal officials in it seems to me official in nevada have stopped a controversial round up of wild mustangs. bureau of land management officials had planned to gather 2,000 mustangs. they say high winds highened the round up. on thursday the vlm announced they would scale them down. ktvu's claudine wong spoke to a bay area congresswoman about a deal that could buy more time. >> reporter: it was business as usual in oakland this morning

but the business of the federal government remains in question. >> i think that neither side wants to have a shut down. >> i really hope they are trying to work together for everybody's best interest. >> reporter: congress goes back to work tomorrow and a short term deal could keep the government running while both sides work out a solution. >> you can't allow even a two week extension to create the same effect only in a much smaller way. >> reporter: but time is an issue. four days and the current budget expires, four days and we face a government shut down. >> in general i'm frustrated with this congress, yes. but you know, it's government so it's frustrating. >> reporter: so what would a government shut down mean? well most federal workers will likely be told not to come to work.

under staffed and dangerous, that's how a state hospital is being described. ktvu's jim vargas talks to employees who say conditions are putting both staff and patients at risk in tonight's special report. >> reporter: employees at napa state hospital say they have some of the most dangerous jobs in california. there were more than 1,200 ray tacks on patients and staff in 2009 which was the last year that full statistics are available -- 1,200 attacks. >> this hospital is out of control. >> reporter: people who work here say the problem starts with an old facility built as a hospital which since the mid- 1990 has been housing violent criminals who come from jails. and the lack of police inside the fence where both violent and nonviolent patients are

a sacramento fire crews say it was amazing no one was injured after 100 goats scattered through the freeway. only one driver was injured and her injuries were not considered life threatening. the interstate was closed for about two hours while emergency crews cleared the scene. they are the defending world champs, we'll take you to spring training up next to show you what changes could be coming this season with this season's edition of the san francisco giants. and it was sunny today but cool in the bay area. the deep freeze has moved out. but chief meteorologist bill martin will tell us which days this week we might see some rain.
