it's all ahead at the ktvu morning news. good morning, thank you for waking up with us. it's monofebruary 28th i'm pam cook. here is steve paulson. it feels cool. >> it does. not as bad as on saturday morning and sun morning. higher clouds have come in. we have seeing upper 30s instead of low 30s. it's still coal. to the north we have sunshine. here is sal. steve highway 4 traffic looking good coming up to the willow pass grade so far. no major problems there. also highway 101 san francisco northbound 101 traffic looks good. let's go back to pam. topping our news this morning construction will again in the newest section of the bay bridge.

allie rasmus joins us now. >> reporter: good morning, pam construction crews will be at -- will be adding another segment to this tower. once it's finished it will be the center piece of the new eastern span of the bay bridge. that work is expected to start a few hours from now. three of the five segments are already in place. the fourth segment will be added to the top of the tower making it 480 feet tall. once that secondment is up -- you are looking at an illustration from the project website. crews will work around the clock starting today to get the fourth segment into place. the third segment was hoisted into place a couple months ago in december. the work expected to take place later on tea will be similar to

that. a little later on cal tran is expected to have a press conference to give us an update and more details of the work that is supposed to start today. san francisco police are investigating a shooting near the mission district. that happened before 10:30 last night on alabama street. once arrive on the scene they have seen several items on evidence on the road including pieces of clothing and shell casings. police say a 27-year-old man was shot while sitting in a car. an ambulance rush the victim to the hospital with life- threatening injuries. this is the third shooting in two days after two people were kill on saturday. this morning police in santa clara looking for suspects in that first homicide of the year. investigators belief the 31- year-old victim was stabbed in front of a gas station and

stumble across the street where he died. still not clear what lead up to the killing. neighbors and police agree deadly violence like this is rare in santa clara. >> it's not typical. this is the bay area. calm mostly. we are certainly not immune to crime but santa clara is a safe city overall. >> this is the first inside since april of last year. concern is growing by the hour for an illerly -- for an elderly san francisco man. care givers at his assisted living home put him on a bus for a day trip to a nearby senior center but he hasn't been seen since. dozens of volunteers searched the golden gate park area. a north bay area is

renewing a common call this morning. friends and family hill a fundraiser -- held a fundraiser. he was crossing the street with her two-year-old daughter that's when police say an 18- year-old driver using the cell phone hit the mother and daughter. kali died in the accident. >> don't use your phone. that is the bottom line. it's not worth taking a life. >> community members organized yesterday's fundraiser hoping to raise $20,000. new this morning four americans are dead after a private plane crash in the united arab imanswer. the u.s. embassy says they were in route to saudi arabia.

the americans identities have not been released. today president obama meets with u.n. secretary general at the white house to discuss the political uprising in libya. hillary clinton is meeting with european foreign members in switzerland. one idea being discussed is a no fly zone over libya. and in libyanty government demonstrators have taken over a city 45 miles from the city of tripoli. that's after government switch sides and joined the protestors. gas prices jumped nearly 20 cents a gallon with premium gas selling more than $4 a gallon. that is hurting us in two ways. the first directly. some say it's making it so difficult to make ends meet they will have to make budget

it looks like the first day of march. it will be a warmer system as the pattern changes. systems are driving in to the north of us. you can see some of the cloud cover toward the north bay. much, much warmer than they had the past couple of mornings. 30s for many. 33 in livermore. nothing like the upper 20s or low 30s we had. it's still coal out there. but not as cold as it was. pretty strong system. we will draw up moisture from the southwest. today is all right. tomorrow we start to cloud it up. we will bring rain and wind in here. tea a mix of sun and clouds. saturday morning more clouds to the north. temperatures in the mid 50s for some. temperatures will be rebounding from the upper 30s for many. sun and clouds today. also low clouds along the

good morning, few clouds mean slightly warmer lows. mid and upper 30s. we'll have sunshine. partly sunny and cloudies. highs today 50s to 60s. an entire town in texas has been ordered to evacuate as wild fires threaten hundreds of homes. 650 people live in madadore. firefighter says high wednesday are making -- high winds are making it difficult to contain that fire. 20 homes have been destroyed. texas prosecutors say they plan to file a charge where a

fire killed four children. jessica tata will be charged with reckless injury to a child. investigators are look into the possibility she left several preschoolers alone in the home when that fire started last week. four children died. two are still in the hospital in critical condition. >> i know the families are struggling with-- this. my heart goes out to them. if convicted the day care owner could face two to three years in prison. the national transportation safety board hearing will be the first time pg&e is grilled pubically about the disaster. the safety agency is months away from concluded why the pipeline exploded. the utility will be likely forced to answer questions about the safety of its system. >> hundreds of pro union

earthquakes in the area since october. researchers say they could be naturally occurring swarms. no one has been hurt. no damage has been reported. tornadoes caught on tape along the state line of kansas and oklahoma. take a look at this. meteorologist say the formation is part of a super cell moving through oklahoma and parts of kansas. golf ball sized hail is pounding the area along with damaging wednesday. there are no reports of injuries or serious damage so far. our overnight weather was slightly warmer than what we had at the end of last week. sellers at the marin county farmers market say they lost a lot of crops to the freezing temperatures. carrots and beets survived the chill but lettuce and fruit trees that had blossomed had

hit hard with the cold. >> when we get down to the 20s then you start losing stuff. you lose the tips off the mandrin trees. >> the problem isn't just with produce they also have to wait for warmer weather to plant their spring crops so those won't be damaged as well. a worker at a restaurant was trapped inside a freezer while the building around him burned. the fire started in the kitchen when the workers started heating oil. he went into the restaurant freezer when he couldn't get out the oil caught fire. fire crews didn't find anyone in the building at fist. then they heard someone in the freezer. a large protest is expected this morning. veterans for peace, grandmothers against war, and

elect cuted during a parade. police say fire works -- dozens of people were also hurt. an investigation is under way in what caused a natural gas line explosion in cleveland, ohio. that fire was contained after the gas line was shut off. crews had been aware of a leak on that line since sat. they were working to repair it. no one was hurt. right now it's 4:51. we want to go back to sal. how is the commute? we are doing pretty well if you are driving on 880 northbound. it looks good heading out to the oakland area. 580 also looks good. let's move along and take a look at highway 4. westbound highway 4 is okay. they had word of a pothole that
