feelings about domestic violence. >> reporter: greg anderson the former trainer has served a year in jail for refusing to testify. >> this isn't about barry bonds this is about a prosecution that is in our belief out of control. >> reporter: and as one of the final motions today, defense attorneys asked the court to set aside a half dozen seats at the trial for barry bonds friends and family. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. police arrested a 17-year- old in berkeley today for bringing a loaded gun to school. the principal add berkeley technology academy called police after getting a tip about a weapon on campus. police told us the suspect is from oakland and had planned to settle some sort of dispute today, possibly at the school. this is the third time a gun has been brought on a berkeley school campus this year. >> vallejo police are trying to

trace two cookies laced with marijuana that made four fifth graders sick. the students at grace patterson elementary say they shared one of those cookies similar to this one on a playground yesterday during their lunch hour. one of the students reportedly got the cookies for free at a gas station convenience store while on his way to school. the store clerk tells ktvu a regular customer left him the ginger snaps and then he passed them on to a student. hernandez said he let the fifth grader have them without knowing what was in them. >> i'm scared because i have kids too. i don't want my kids going to school and eating something. >> reporter: three of the students were taken to the hospital and released last night. officials say today all four are okay. hundreds of union members are protesting in san jose tonight in solidarity with workers from wisconsin. we first told you about this during our 5:00 newscast. now ktvu's robert handa is live

now with why this dispute over unions is hitting home in the south bay, robert. >> it's interesting frank, first of all we're here in downtown san jose where about 1,000 union members have been protesting and supporting other unions across the country. you can see right now the enthusiasm of these bay area union members who say unions are under attack in wisconsin and san jose. >> california's state employees rallied at san jose's main library, to show support for wisconsin. >> it's a struggle but we're here. we're here to fight this everyone if it's coming down from wisconsin, we hear them. we hear their pain. >> reporter: many demonstrators say they also hear that pain in san jose. >> right here in our own city, they are trying to dismantle the unions, against the firefighters, teachers, nurses and the city police. >> reporter: today city hall

was buzzing about a major development in negotiations. firefighters have offered to take a 10% cut in pay and benefits. contribute more to benefits as well as create a two tier benefit system. it shows asking for concessions is not attacking the unions. >> when the firefighters step up and say, we understand the problem and we're willing to take a 10% reduction in total compensation, it's harder for other people to say, let's not deal with it, we can put it off. >> i don't think it's union busting. what it really is is it's talking about preserving services. >> reporter: the firefighters union says it is sympathetic to other unions but sometimes it's adjusting to the times. >> we're creative, nimble, we're able to recognize when concessions needs to be made and bargaining needs to be made. the message to the city is we want to work together. >> right now state workers plan another protest here downtown on thursday. how will it all play out?

they say they're going to be here and trying to make it happen. live in downtown san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. union supporters gathered outside the wisconsin capital today as governor scott walker unveiled his new budget. it cuts $1.5 billion in aid to public schools and local government. the governor also says it will avoid tax or fee increases, employee furloughs if a plan to eliminate collective bargaining for most employees is put in place. a sacramento school district is meeting today to decide whether to beside a pink slip delivery. the district has until may 15th to let teachers know they may

be out of a job. teachers with the least amount of seniority are layed off first. but that could be changing. republican state senator bob haffas has introduced a bill to allow teachers performance to play part in the lay offs. and camela harris asked for an appeal for same-sex marriages to be allowed. harris says that same-sex couples have been denied their right to convene loved ones and friends to celebrate marriages sanctioned.

this photo was taken from the south main street location that was robbed last thursday. the following day, a man matching the description brandished a weapon. he is also believed to have robbed a concord 7/11 store. 40 police officers will soon be walking a new beat in oakland. mayor gene quan welcomed coordinators to the start of their new training. >> under nationwide we're able to bring back beat officers that is an officer that's assigned to a designated area. this is an officer that everybody should know in their neighborhood. >> major jean quan says that the program should be credited for the reduction of crime in

oakland. when you're a regulated utility you have a responsibility to the public not to to industry. a pg & e memo from 2006 was exposed today. it showed the utility chose not to equip pipelines with shut off valves. the memo's author who was also engineer testified that the valves would have allowed firefighters to turn off the valve in 15 minutes rather than an hour and a half. >> reporter: the city of san bruno moves closer to remove the etched scar that is left here in flames. a year ago, magulihe was working when the pg & e pipeline exploded his neighborhood. homes burned to the ground and his was badly damaged.

live pictures right now of the bay bridge where tonight crews will continue to install those huge vertical columns that make up the signature tower of the new eastern span. yesterday we saw one of the columns being lifted out of the tunnel. they expect a second one to land in the tower sometime around 10:00 tonight. just a few minutes ago, the nummi board approved payments from a two train collision in the west portal tunnel. you can see how dozens of people were injured when one train slammed right into the back of another train. a judge has decided the estate of a habitual drunk driver should have to pay restitution to the family of a child he killed. edward shaffer was ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution for a motorcycle crash that

killed 9-year-old melody osh era. but he was stabbed to death in prison before he could pay. it was shaffers tenth drunk driving conviction. $22,000. that's how much community members helped raise to help a family from a deadly collision. ling was injured and her 2-year- old daughter was killed when they were hit by a teenager believed to be texting when he caused the crash. some san jose residents say not enough is being done to deal with a growing homeless encampment just a few feet from their home. maureen naylor is live with how budget cuts have hindered enforcement. this is a story you will see only on two. >> this is a relevantly new neighborhood, these condos were all built in the last year or

so. but in the last year, some unrant wanted neighbors moved in just behind her. in a tree lined park, you don't see it at first anymore. by look down, and you will find it. >> trash and shopping carts. >> they are in an area where nice townhomes and nice condo, it worried me as a parent and homeowner that there's something like that superclose to my house. >> reporter: one tent is just feet from his front door. he says in the last years, the encampment has become a problem. >> i wish they could be served at the shelters. >> reporter: local shelters say the problem is there are 7,000 people homeless in santa clara county. 7% live in san jose and there are only so many emergency beds

neigh wide. >> this is not an isolated incident. >> reporter: efforts are under way to encourage the homeowners to seek temporary houses but says little else can be done. >> if they're not violating anything, if they have not committed any crimes, all we can do is go there and let them know that we have these type of resources available to them. >> reporter: san jose says it's been getting more complaints when two police officers were pulled from their homeless liaison duties for patrol in a cost cutting move. san jose has found new funding to get a nonprofit to come in to get the homeless jobs and housing. but that program is still months away and the reality is some homeless simply don't want the help. reporting live in san jose, maureen naylor. charity is soliciting donations will soon be banned from san francisco international airport. the airport commission approved a measure this morning to prohibit groups from asking passengers for money.

sfo have received 135 formal complaints of passengers being harassed by solicitors inside and outside terminals. the new rules will take effect next month. target opens its doors tomorrow in the east bay. it's not just shoppers who are looking forward to it. both oakland and emeryville will be benefiting. it's not far from the home depot and ikea in the area. but it's also just feet away from emeryville who provided the redevelopment money for the building. today the state conducted it's third snow pack survey of the winner. hydrologists found the sierra snow pack is at 124% of normal for this time of year. after a dry january, the late february storms helped kick the snow pack -- keep rather the snow pack at levels above

normal. >> where there's struggling to make deliveries or they are struggling to not overuse the waters. >> officials say the water saves efforts must continue. and live storm tracker two picking up showers offshore right now. you can see it picking up here. moderate to light showers, the rain really the heavy rain is going to be after midnight. let's take the leading edge of this and we can track the miles to the coast. from the leading edge of this shower activity to the sunset district about 60 miles. after 10:00, the showers begin around 10:00 in the north bay. then after midnight they really get going. showers and rain and wind. wind advisory in effect tonight after 9:00. windy after midnight, your morning commute is going to be a wet one. wet on the road. and maybe some moderate rainfalling from the sky. then unsettled as we go into the long range forecast into

the weekend. sunday looks wet now. the forecast then for the wind advisory, east bay hills, basically all the hills could go to gusts over 30. east bay, 40s not cold. we're looking at mild overnight lows. here's the system i'm tracking it's different than the last one, the last one came way up here from the arctic region. mid-latitude, lots of moisture, this will be a wet one. maybe an inch of rain in your house. maybe a half inch. computer model goes like this. computer model tonight, it's raining in the north bay. showers start elsewhere. we go overnight, this is the front right here. this is when the winds really start to kick up, 1:00, 2:00 a.m. and then the rain really starts to fall. midnight to 5:00 a.m., then the back edge of the front, morning commute wet. late morning commute still wet.

but not as wet, the real rain midnight. and probably right through tomorrow night. then the next little bit of rain starts to roll in here as we head into wednesday night. thursday we've got showers in the forecast as well. but the main hit, between about midnight tonight and 3:00 or 4:00 tomorrow morning. okay so that's the wheel house for this storm with the strong winds, gust per happen to 35 or 40. temperatures tomorrow in the mild side and that is also indicative of the rain it will produce. these are mild time highs. we're looking for rainfall accumulations perhaps an inch, inch and half, that's a solid storm. the weekend always in view, you can see it there. temperatures on the weekend will warm up a little bit. right now, sunday looks like it's going to be a wet one. another storm coming in. >> they're kind of lining up for us. >> it's still winter. >> it is. thank you, bill. it may look just like a pile of dirt but it is a welcome gift for some east bay students. why they are celebrating this dirty delivery.
