broccoli recall announced last week. all the products come from taylor farm pacific. now the foods includes pork and chicken noodle bowls. salads called broccoli crunch kits and products that have alfredo sauce. they were sold at raley's and safeway stores. we know the royal wedding is coming soon. kate middleton will be a military bride when she marries prince william. what the prince is saying about the chance he will be heading out to war after his wedding. there is a warning about a string of robberies in the east bay. this suspect is not going after cash. westbound 24 traffic looks pretty good getting up to the tunnel. we have a big problem in marin we are following.

getting ready for the royal wedding. prince williams wants to serve on the front lines of the war. officials think that is a bad idea. the prince has a real determination. he's hopeful to serve in the afghan war but it looks like he may not be given a chance. the chief of the defense staff says prince william is not properly trained yet. he may be target the because he is second in line to the thrown. rutgers university is hoping coed dorms are hoping it will make gay students feel more comfortable. it will allow men and women to room together and share bathrooms. rutgers is taking this action after a gay student committed suicide last year. he killed himself after his roommate filmed himself during annuity gnat encounter with another man. police are searching for suspects in three separate shootings. two people were killed. one man was injured.

a man was shot and killed on 94th avenue. three hours earlier a another man die -- another man died. another man was injured on doweling street. investigators say a drug addiction may be fueling a string of unusual pharmacy robberies in contra costa county. last night a pharmacy in pleasant hill was robbed. over the past week and a half pharmacy in concord and clayton have been hit. a white male in his 30s wearing a beanny and sun classes walked through the door of a cvs store and headed straight to the pharmacy. in every store the man was only after one thing. >> liquid cough syrup. five pints of it. he pushed other bottles aside

to get to these. >> police say the cough syrup contains codeine which is highly addictive. we spoke with a drug rehabilitation. time now 6:26. the stage is finally set for the long delayed perjury trial of berry bonds. berry bonds looking trim returned to the courthouse and reentered his not guilty plea. it was a last major hearing before the scheduled start of the trial in less than three weeks. barry bonds is accused of lying to grand jury. >> perjury to the grand jury is taken very seriously. if you can lie to the grand jury, the whole system falls down. >> he's always looked forward to vindication in this case. >> barry bonds and his former

trainer was in court together for the first time yesterday. the judge warned anderson he will be sent back to prison if he refuses to testify in the perjury trial. he still refuses to take the stand. time now 6:27. investigators are searching for answers in the death of a san francisco man at a lake tahoe ski resort. also in new york the opening bell you can see there is about to ring on wall street. the company ringing the bell may signal optimism. good morning, southbound 101 there is a crash involving a big rig near the central san rafael area. we'll tell you about this crash and what it's doing to traffic straight ahead.

friend. now his body was later found in a tree well. investigators say it's still not clear if he crashed into the tree or suffocated after hitting a snow bank. parents in san francisco are bracing for the worst after more than 400 pink slips were handed out by the school board. >> it's a travesty. it's a shame we have to go through this. it's a shame we have to deal with this. it's our kids that suffer. >> layoff notices go around this time of year as a precaution. 172 teachers along with teachers aids and administrators got them this time around. well while san francisco schools brace for cuts, school board members may see a pay increase. last night the board of supervisors voted to place a ballot measure before voters if a june special election is

held. that measure proposes paying school board members $25,000 a year. right now they earn $6,000 a year. san jose city leaders are looking over a proposal from the firefighters union. firefighters have offered to take a 10% cut in pay and benefits. they are also proposing a two- tier benefit system. chuck reid hopes his city's other unions will follow suit. they are facing a $110 million shortfall. he warns layoffs are likely without concession. berkeley police have responded to three reports of a gun on a high school campus in the last couple of months. in the most recent incident yesterday a 17-year-old student was arrested at the berkeley technology of academy accused of bringing a loaded handgun to the classroom. police say there were two other incidents where guns were found at berkeley high school last month. in san francisco right turns from san's market street

is -- from san francisco's market street is becoming a pilot change. it makes drivers turn right at sixth street and tenth street. now muni says since that program started, muni travel time has gotten better. transit vehicles, taxis, delivery trucks, and bicycles are exempt from the forced right turn. sal is covering traffic issues including a truck accident in san rafael. is that right? >> that's right. it's a lumber truck that has come separated from its trailer. the truck itself is blocking the two right lanes. no one was injured but the traffic backup is huge. southbound 101 traffic is going to be slow heading up the hill over to central san rafael. this is going to be a big deal for nevada traffic heading down to the 580 interchange. ktvu is there. we'll show you live pictures

from the scene. you may not want to stick around for that. you may want to get on the road as soon as possible. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge. traffic is backed up to the middle of the parking lot. those metering lights are on. remember the wind will get your attention if you are driving anywhere in the bay area. especially the bridges. let's go to steve. there is more wind than rain. we still have this front. it's on the mild side. very blustery along the coast. system will exit here in the next hour or two. we will still get a south wind. we are really close. looks like it has gone by ukiah. a couple more hours here. then we will see breaks in the clouds. we will get sun breaks. but what we are seeing okay showers. there are bursts of moderate. things have turned more

scattered at this time. really hardily anything on the -- really hardly anything on the peninsula. this system is mild, mild. 40s and 50s. 52 for some. mountain view is in there. livermore is in there. livermore at this time yesterday was 32. huge difference through the cloud cover and the source of this system that came up from the south, southwest. the pattern has changed. now we are seeing things coming in from a lower latitude. you will see breaks. coming around the system will be a series as spokes in a wheel. you will get a cloud and showers. for the early morning hours like right now that is the system going by. rainfall totals hardly any for some. russian river had two inches. winter storm warning up for the sierra. so rain and wind in the morning. 48-52. by noon we get sun breaks.

sun, clouds, and showers. and then by this evening breezy, a few showers will hold on. 54-62. upper 50s for some. low 60s for others. we will not cool off that much. there were a few 63s yesterday. sun clouds showers will take us into thursday. we get a break friday. pam and dave. >> thank you. 6:36. a wild story. a central valley woman recovering after clinging to the hood of a speeding minivan going 100 miles an hour. this all started in mantika saturday. the woman didn't let go until she was in pleasanton 40 miles away. imagine this. the woman's husband was driving that van. she says she had first got in front of the van to keep him from driving off. her husband never stopped and somehow she ended up on the roof of that car. >> i was holding on literally

by the tips of my fingers and basically by my ankles. now i know it was the stupidest thing in my life i had ever done. i jumped on the hood of the van. >> the woman's husband identified as michael carroll jumped on the freeway and was going up to 100 miles an hour with his wife on the hood. he finally slowed down on interstate 580 in pleasanton allowing her to roll off the minivan. she was take ton the hospital and treated -- she was taken to the hospital and treated for scrapes. her husband but booked -- her husband was booked on attempted murder and other charges. actress joan collins was sent to the hospital after the oscars. she blames her dress. who police want to talk to in connection of a mysterious death.

plans to cut public education funding and raise tuition. events are planned in san francisco, oakland, berkeley, and san jose. just about 45 minutes ago day two started in that three- day hearing in washington, d.c. investigating the san bruno pipeline explosion. yesterday pg&e officials told investigators that the section of the 1950s gas transmission line that blew up was probably pieced together from scraps of pipe left over from other projects. and this morning a young mother from santa rosa is facing drunk driving charges in this crash that injured her children. it's horrifying roll over crash happened last night on laughlin road. the mother and children are expected to survive. inside detectives in san francisco are investigating a mysterious death. ktvu kraig debro tells us about a man found dead in a north

beach jewelry store. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we don't know who this man is. behind me is the store. i just spoke to a neighbor, he said that the shop has been here for awhile but the man that runs it came into money recently that's why he fixed it up. according to the website, he sold jewelry down at fisherman wharf for 20 years. this this is a medical examiners seal indicating this is a part of a crime scene. the body was found at 8:00 last night. and when they did they found the body inside the resident. in addition to this jewelry store, there is a residence in the back where the neighbor i spoke to that lynn lived in the back. we don't know the identity of the body found inside. police tell me they are not sure either. they are still looking for a lynn magnison or the person where the welfare check was

about. i will call police again to see if we can get more information. reporting live in san francisco kraig debro. time now 6:43. another investigation continues now into a deadly tragedy. this one involving a young father and baby. sheriffs deputies say a teenage dad lead them on a high-speed chase that ended with this crash at a train station. this was yesterday afternoon. officers shot and killed the man during a confrontation moments after that crash. deputies were horrified to find out the father had apparently stabbed and killed his baby while he was driving. harris is calling for same sex marriages to resume while the courts consider the legality of prop 8. harris says it's unlikely that supporters of the ban will prevail. last week the california supreme court said it needs the remainder of the year to consider whether or not the group arguing in favor of the

marriage ban in federal appeals court has legal standing to do so. starting this month, the u.s. army is trying out changes to its annual physical fitness. soldiers will have to run on a balance beam with two 30-pound canisters. the army says the goal is to make the physical training program more like real combat training. joan collins was rushed to the hospital after attending the academy 5:wards. she's blaming the tight dress she was wearing. the 77-year-old former dynasty star said she started feeling dizzy almost passed out. where her husband called an ambulance. joan collins was rushed to the hospital. she's feeling fine now but that dress she is wearing was so

tight. >> and despite a national campaign to put the breaks on distracted driving people still are surfing the internet while they are driving. a survey conducted in november by state farm insurance found that 1-5 drivers go online actually go online while driving at least once a week. it also found that 74% of people are still talking on their phones while they drive. 35% send or receive text messages while driving. my goodness. hopefully none of that going on because the roads are wet. there is a crash in san rafael. a number of problems because of the weather. >> there were a few crashes in san rafael. the most serious one is a talk accident. the truck became separated from its trailer and the traffic on southbound 101 is very, very slow heading down from the southern part of nevada. stop and go traffic getting to the civic center. you need to give yourself plenty of extra time getting

through marin. unless of course you will get on the freeway south of san rafael. then you will find the commute a little lighter. let's go to the toll plaza. we have a big backup there. if you are drying to cross the valley at 237 already getting slow traffic. people are out there early because of this mornings wet weather. they think the wind is the biggest deal when it comes to the driving. let's go to steve. sal, you are correct. the system is moving through right now but the rain hasn't been that heavy expect for a few. our observer ron is just pouring. there have been reports of northwest sonoma county there have been reports of rain. our system is getting close to coming by. right there. and then we will see this start to slide by later on. it has cranked up the wind.

26 miles an hour and southeast sfo16. these are sustained winds. even san jose 16. the rain looks to be tapering off there. a little bit of hit and miss showers. we are looking for a calming down of the rain and showery pattern with a breezy blustery day. gusts over 50. some of the east bay hills. 40s and 50s on these temperatures. there goes the whopper of the low. it's spinning right off. it goes right off portland and seattle. as this goes by you will see things rotating in here. the system has some punch a lot of wind out there and some rain. so there might be a few locations get a tenth of an inch or less to over two especially as we said to the north. for many, it's about a half inch to a quarter of an inch.

winter storm warning out in the sierra. last time i checked it was raining at lake levels. 48-52. the snow level has gone way, way up. it will be a combination of that rather breezy. today 50s and 60s. very low 60s due to the source of the air mass being on the mild side. and tomorrow we'll see a repeat performance of what we will have for the rest of today. friday is a break. saturday increasing clouds. facebook says it will go ahead with its plans to accept a request for information about its members including home addresses and phone numbers. the social networking site announced the idea in january but put off implementing it right away. facebook officials say they may let users know when that information is being shared. they are also considering whether or not to restrict request for information about anyone under the age of 18.

let's check in on the markets this morning. here a live look at the big board. new york stock exchange showing the dow is up just about 1 point. it hasn't changed much. it's fluctuated a bit up and down. right now the nasdaq and s & p posting. i'm looking at the crude oil price right now it is back above $100 a barrel. that is certainly putting pressure on the markets this morning. the number of people applying for new mortgages or refinancing dropped last week despite a dip in interest rate. the mortgage bankers association says the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 4.86%. time now 6:49. we will take a quick break. the moment you feel run down or achy nip flu-like symptoms

she saw a tow truck driver backing toward her car. she asked the driver don't take my car the next thing he knew her husband was outside telling him his wife was tracked under the car. it appears the death was an accident. a very unlikely source giving inspiration now to those who survived last weeks deadlyet quake in new zealand. the mayor of christchurch says the quake uncovered a time capsule there. it was found inside a statue of the founder of christchurch. it's believed to date back to 1867. there is a message inside about their vision for christchurch. we are learning new details about pension spiking. a little known benefit that bart police are using to inflate their pensions by thousands of dollars when they retire. bart police officers are covered by the state retirement fund. each year they pay 9% in their

retirement fund and bart matches this with another 9%. thanks to an accounting adjustment officers have the option of boosting their pay in their final year by having bart pay them the 9% instead of paying it to call calper. >> right before you retire you get the additional benefit. >> this increases their income during that final year which in turn means an increase in their pension. calper sees pension spiking is not illegal. because the pay increase does not just go to one person. bart officials say it's a necessary perk to recruit people for what can often be a dangerous job. time now 6:54. american idol has cut the pack down to 24 semifinalists and the battle of the sexes have begun. waters. federal regulators are expected to come up with their recommendation next week. we're going to go over to sal because he's looking at the roads this morning. wet roads, some crashes, how does it look? >> we want to get right to this picture southbound 101. the big rig came away from the trailer. now the tow truck is hooking up to this trailer that is fully loaded with lumber. the two right lanes are blocked southbound 101 at lincoln avenue. this truck has been here for almost an hour now. the traffic is terrible heading southbound from nevada. you can see a lot of people are going to be avoiding the freeway using some of the side roads. southbound 101 in san rafael before lincoln right near north san pedro. let's look at westbound bay bridge. the traffic is backed up to the oakland army base.
