news we brought you at the very beginning of this newscast, it's happening right now at the campus of uc berkeley. forecasters there on the ledge of a building in front of wheeler hall. outside on the ground a lot more protesters. our john sasaki also outside of wheeler hall. let's bring him in now. >> gasia, we're standing outside of wheeler hall. let's take a look, there's hundreds of students have stopped to stair: and the primary reason they are here is to support the people who are on top of the building on the ledge. you can see, about eight or nine people standing on the edge of the fourth floor. there's a ledge out there. this is one of the primary academic buildings here on campus. these folks have taken over the top of that building. the building is now closed per the university. but these folks are here as you look from news chopper two, you can see they are there, they are very upset with all the cuts that have been coming here to the university of california and to the whole uc system.
5:07 pm
they are protesting that, they are protesting the arrest and detainment of other protesters who were involved in yesterday's day of action. they say that today is actually a continuation of yesterday's national day of action when they had people across the country involved in protesting cuts to higher education. these folks they say that they are going to be here a very, very long time. now i haven't talked to anybody up on the ledge. but i have talked to their supporters here on the ground and they say that this is about all those different things, especially about what is costing the students here to go to school, many of them say they have to take out second loans. many of them say that some of the departments are being combined and that's doing disservice to the students. as you can hear they are getting more cheering from their students as they unveiled a banner right there. and it says, it says your university on the back it says, the cuts -- fight back against the cuts. so that's going on right now.
5:08 pm
big red banner and now folks down here on the university floor are chanting as they often do here at the university of california. but the folks up there on the ledge on the fourth floor here at wheeler hall say that they will be here as long as it takes. now who knows exactly what that is going to mean. because the university typically doesn't do much negotiation with people who are involved in this kind of protest. but i also did want to show you that the front of yesterday's daily -- or today's daily californian, this talks about yesterday's day of action and it shows one of the students here being arrested. so this today here at wheeler hall is a direct continuation of this. also a protest against the arrests yesterday. so we're going to certainly be here, 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 and 10:00 covering the developments. they say they could be here days, probably even weeks. live in berkeley, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. it is a story we've been
