northbound 101 traffic open and clear to the 80 slit. 4:31. let's go back to pam. >> fremont passengers should be on alert, burglaries have prompted officers to warn you about what you leave inside your car. jay hernandez has more from the train depo infaremont. good morning. >> reporter: it appears these dollars, coins, whatever the commuters left in their parked car and specifically in this parking lot right here, fremont police say a thief or thieves broke into about 40 cars. we can show you video of some of those cars yesterday. the calls came pouring into the fremont police department yesterday morning and by the end of the morning, officers realized the target was whatever was left inside of the cars. a camera captured the glass from the broken window still in the parking lot and a few of the cars broken into and left

in the lot. the centerville train depo and amtrak ace trains come through the station and the ace train from stockton to san jose and the police department is warning anyone that parks in this lot or any other to do the obvious, put your valuables out of sight and that includes the change in your cup holder. overnight a crash on highway 4 in antioch injured the driver. the highway patrol says a car heading westbound left the roadway and rolled over and ended up on the east side near the hill crest exit. the woman driving the car had to be extracted using the jaws of life. she was taken to the hospital. all of this happened just after 11:00 last night but it is still not clear yet what caused the car to leave the roadway in

the first place. students are claiming victory at berkeley that occupied a building for 7 hours. led out of wheeler hall at 9:30. they took over the 4th floor ledge at 2:00 yesterday afternoon to protest state budget cuts and disciplinary action against protest ares. they came down after campus officials met some of their demands including agreeing to a meeting. >> we are not criminals, we are concerned students and we deserve for the leaders on the campus to take it seriously. >> all 8 protesters were cited for trespassing. university officials say 26 classes at wheeler hall were canceled yesterday affecting more than one thousand students. new recommendations by a legislative committee could affect students at the art

academy university. the reports reducing cal awards. there was oversight and high default rates cited. and in light of the drafts, the commission says it is necessary to set priorities. there's a warning for people in woodside this morning about a mountain lion roaming the area that was spotted near preston road and highway 84 yesterday evening. people living in the area are advised to avoid being outdoors at dawn, dusk and in the night when the animals are most active. pg and e are taking concrete steps to show public awareness of the pipe lines. all customers living within 2000 feet of one of its pipe lines will now receive a safety letter from the company. and in populated areas the company will also begin installing safety valves that

can be shut off remotely. >> pg and e is a new perform g and e and i think it can become the gold standard for the. it got slammed at a hearing looking into the san bruno pipeline explosion. the utility is criticized for failing to let the public and city know about the pipe lines in the community. a deal is in place to help san jose with a 110 million budget deficit that involves the firefighters taking a 10% in pay and benefits over the next two years. >> that's a big sacrifice and we know it is difficult for the members to do their work and taking a pay cut. >> as part of the deal no firefighters will be laid off and the union must ratify the deal and the city council must prove it on tuesday. san jose has called on all of its unions to take pay cuts or

face layoffs. the san sa clara valley transportation authority has proven a lifeline to cal tran. there was five resolutions to provide financial support to cal tran. not clear exactly how much the vta will contribute but cal tran face as 30 million-dollar shortfall and declared a fiscal emergency. cal tran does not have its own dedicated source of money and depends on money from other transit agencies. time is 4:37 and we will go back to sal and check on the friday morning commute. >> traffic is doing well around the bay area, on the east shore freeways interstate 80 looks nice and no problems on westbound interstate 80. bay bridge toll plaza is light

collective bargaining rights by public employee union. senate democrats in the state are still on the run in illinois refusing to vote on the measure. governor scott walker says he will now issue 1500 layoff notices today if none of the democrats return to the state to vote. he threatens to hold them in contempt and force police to bring them back to wisconsin. well san francisco police under investigation. accused of lying while trying to catch the bad guys. now it could affect a lot of other cases. plus the reason a local high school play could be the target of a protest today. >> good morning, westbound 24 looking pretty good on the way to the tunnel. we'll be right back with more traffic and weather.

welcome back. good morning to you. it will feel like spring today. patchy fog to start the morning. cool conditions and in the afternoon it will be mild. mostly cloudy and mild and rain arrives late tomorrow night. in less than an hour the labor department will release the february employment report and analysts are optimistic. most economists are raising predictions to 2000 jobs after the weekly report that fewer people are filing for first time unemployment benefits.

economists forecast the unemployment rate is up slightly to 9.1%. unemployment rates often rise when the economy starts to improve because people who had stopped looking for work start up again. another attack on low- income people. that's what oakland congresswoman barbara lee calls the plan to cut $61 billion from the federal budget. she believes it should be reduced by cutting the defense budget and stopping the wars instead of cutting social programs. we have obtained video of a drug bust in san francisco. the latest tape was taken new year's evening and shows the officers serving a warrant and they kick in the door and arrest a 28-year-old suspect. two officers have been named in misconduct investigation and there are new legal questions

in this case. >> it appears that they altered the fasts fasts -- facts in the report in order to appear that they lawfully seized the items. prosecutors dropped the case because two of the officers are under investigation for perjuriy and misconduct in two other drug busts. legal experts say more san francisco drug cases could be affected. we now know that federal agents have been investigating two bay area card clubs for two years before they were raided on wednesday. 14 people were arrested during the raise at the oaks in emeryville and artichoke joe's accused of loan sharking, racketeering and drug dealing. most of them did not work at the card clubs but they allegedly relied on employees for help.

the morerin county coroner is trying to find out why the man was buried in the backyard. the body is that of 74-year-old dale smith reported missing by a neighbor last month. police are trying to determine if his wife, 55-year-old evelyn smith had anything to do with the death or the burial. she reportedly purchased 300 pounds of sand last year but her lawyers are not saying if it was for the patio area where his body was found. this morning the investigators continues into the attack at a hospital. the news that a patient ripped off the clothing of a female employee and tried to rape her. that patient is now in napa county jail facing four felonies. >> it took five staff members to contain him and get him off of this woman while he

continued to attempt to rape her. >> workers say tobar was not considered a particularly dangerous patient but this is the third inmate attack of worker. in one case a nurse was strangled to death. and them blue cross is raising health insurance rates. it will be 15% starting may 1st. it will not affect the same policy holders that saw their rates go up last year. still some san jose workers said they are worried. >> they will have to make very painful decisions about whether they pay their rent or time or put food on the table. >> the costs are rising faster than premium increases. an independent study concludes that the increase in warranted. the church known for

protests at military funerals could target a san jose school tonight. the website for westboro church lists protests at gunnery son high school tonight. it is against the production of the liramie project. it takes a look at the 1996 murder of gay student matthew shepherd. protesters says they will be there tonight to support the students. nfl owners and the players are going into overtime in an effort to settle a labor dispute that could affect the season this fall. the new deadline is nine p.m. tonight west coast time and the dispute has many fans worried but america's most famous football fan wants to stay on the sidelines for now. my expectation and hope is that they will resolve it without me intervening because it turns out i got a lot of

welcome back to the morning news. apple is giving some of its customers 100-dollar refunds. anyone that bought a first generation i pad on february 16th and before the price cut

announced a wednesday its eligible. customers will need to request a refund by the 16th of this month and have the original receipt. the company has a policy of making refunds when it permanently reduces prices of its products. there is a new retail store. jc penney will have a ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:30. local politicians will join in and customers will be able to start shopping at nine a.m. madza is recalling fifty thousand of its vehicles. it is because of critters. it affects the 2009 and 2010 six cars, it says spiders can crawl in the fuel tank ventilation system and can spin webs making the systems vulnerable to cracks and leaks.
