"mornings on 2" begins right now. good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's friday, march 4th. topping our news at this hour. a new milestone on the bay bridge. here is a live picture of the tower on the left of your screen, about six hours ago crews completed the latest section ahead of schedule. claudine wong joins us now with new video and to tell us what is next. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, they are pretty excited they were able to complete in on schedule because we had rain and wind on tuesday that head them think that it might happen. you can see -- that made them think that it might not happen. you can see the scaffolding

structure and the crane at the top. we're at the bay bridge project headquarters. this is an important piece of what you will see on the very, very top of the bridge when it's done. i'm joined by bart nay. tell me where this goes? >> well, this is the top of the bridge, this is our main table saddle. it will sit in here in the steel. >> reporter: you talked about getting -- the significance of getting this tower up. how significant was this overnight work? >> well, a huge milestone and big for the moral of our entire team. we were able to finish it early. but it completes the leg of the school, that is the main tower and the top of this piece, we'll place in april.

>> as far as what people will see, this has been very visual, the legs going um in the towers. you have the same kind of event when this goes up. it's kind of eye level. >> right. when you get to the top of the bridge, they will be 500 feet up, on top of the world. and that should happen around summer. >> reporter: bart nay, thank you for joining us. i want to show you one more thing here. we talk about the scale and the tonnage. look at these bolts in here. they are bigger than softballs. really significant piece of work when they are talking about lifting up this kind of equipment all the way to the top of this self-anchored suspension span. certainly interesting. we're gonna bring you that video that we have of you coming up in our next report.

claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. about 90 minutes ago, the labor department just released the new jobs report. the unemployment rate dropped to 8.9% in february. that's the lowest unemployment point in almost two years. it's almost the third straight month with a drop in unemployment. the economy added 192,000 jobs with manufacturing, healthcare, education, professional and business services, all adding jobs. however, retailers and some state and local governments cut jobs. overnight, gasoline prices went up again, according to triple-a, the prices went up an average of about 3 cents a gallon overnight. overnight here in the bay area. the average price for regular in oakland was $3.86. that's up 7 cents wednesday afternoon. almost a quarter gallon higher

since the middle of last week. fremont police are warning about car thieves and they are talking about the centerville train depot. jade hernandez is live in fremont with what the thieves are going after. >> reporter: good morning. it's hard to imagine being on an ace train passenger, getting off the train and then finding out your car has been broken into. fremont police a -- police alerted the media about a thief or thieves who broke into about 40 cars yesterday morning. we don't know if the cars were broken into at all once. but the thieves said they targeted of what was left in the tarted cars. mainly loose chain. a ktvu camera caught this, a lot of broken glass.

the train is used by amtrack and ace trains. we spoke to several passengers who were shocked to hear about this. one man 234 particular said this was the second time he was -- in particular said this was the second time he was broken into. >> it would be nice to see -- if they had surveillance or something to keep them out of our cars. >> i don't have anything valuable. i have old clothes and shoes. >> my car has been broken into during the day. they stole a backpack. they didn't break the window. they were able to just pull it down. i was amazed just driving around the parking lot, just the numbers, usually there's one. but driving around yesterday, there were 30, 40. >> reporter: we tried contacting the fremont police department this morning but haven't heard back from anyone yet. the passenger broken into said the department told him to file a report online. now, the police department is

warning everyone to do the obvious -- put your valuables out of site and that includes change you might have in your cup holder. back to you. >> thank you, jade. 7:06. classes expected to be back to normal at uc berkeley's wheeler hall this morning after that seven-hour protest shut down the building. [ cheers ] >> you can see eight students let out about 9:30 last night. they took over the fourth floor ledge of the building yesterday afternoon. their demands included getting student conduct charges dropped from the 2009 occupation of wheeler hall. >> i personally have been working for a year and a half on all of these d.o.c. charges. today was a huge accomplishments. we got a lot of sentences reduced so this struggle can continue. >> students say they got the school to agree to a town hall heating to talk about the

proposed budget cuts. as part of the negotiations, they will not face student conduct charges but they were cited for trespassing. all right. 7:07. we want to check in with sal and see how things are moving on the roads and if it's friday night right now. >> hello, tori and dave. for the most part, it's friday light out there, which will be nice forest -- for most of you driving into san francisco. westbound bay bridge, that traffic looks nice. no major problems. there's a small delay but that delay is not severe. looking around and taking a look at 880 northbound and southbound, this traffic looks very nice driving past the coliseum. if you are driving on the commute, a little bit of slow traffic approaching 680. if you are in hayward and union city it looks good. marin county, between novato and san rafael, very light, also going from san francisco to marin looks good. let's go to rose mayy.

into the pacific ocean. nasa says this glory satellite was launched just after 2:00 a.m. the launch went well first, at first and then a protected nose on the rocket didn't separate as it should have about three minutes after this launch. that left the spacecraft too heavy to make it into orbit. another launch is scheduled for later today, this time in cape canaveral, florida. but we have very little details about this. what we do know is the air force is behind today's launch, it's an experiment. it looks like a mini subtle -- space shuttle. to get more information on the launch go to ktvu.com. 7:11. why apple is giving some customers $100 refund. also -- why the shooting of

forces loyal to him boosted security last night preparing for today's forecast. this morning, there are reports that more than 1500 people are demonstrating there. the libyan government has cut off internet access in some areas trying to limit the protests. also, we're getting new information right now about that 21-year-old man accused of shooting and killing two american airmen at the frankfurt, germany airport. the investigators say the suspect told them he went to the airport specifically to kill americans as a mission in afghanistan. when he saw one of the buses parked outside, he asked if they were on their way to afghanistan, one man said yes. he shot him. he went on the bus and shot them. investigators say he tried to keep shooting but his gun

jammed. it is 7:15. wisconsin governor scott walker says he will send out 1500 pink slips today if senate democrats protesting a controversial union bill don't return to the seat. >> in this tough, economic time, the last thing i want is anybody laid off, much less 1500 additional worker. >> scott walker says if one of the 14 state democrats doesn't show up today, he will send out pink slips. today's deadline comes hours after pro-union supporters were forced to leave wisconsin's capital in madison. a judge ruled yesterday, police officers could clear the building. san jose firefighters are taking a 10% cut in pay in benefits over the next two years. >> i want to acknowledge the sacrifices that they are

prepared to make to save the jobs so their coworkers and to preserve services for the city of san jose to help keep the people say -- keep the people safe. >> as part of the deal, no firefighters will be laid off. the union must still ratify the deal and the city council must approve it on tuesday. 7:16. well, you pro-football fans may have some reason for hope this morning. the nfl players and owners have alerted -- have averted a lockout, at least for now. but there is another deadline looming tonight. alison burns is live in washington, d.c. where those talks continue today. alison? >> reporter: dave, the labor deal that was set to expire last night now expires tonight. that means that the nfl players' reps and owners returned -- return to the

office in d.c. today. this time they will are sitting down separately with the mediator, they have been talking about a plan that would shift profits and a major lockout is looming and the 2011 season is still in jeopardy. president obama is making clear, he will not intervene. >> i'm a big football fan. but i also think for an industry that's making $9 billion a year in revenue, they can figure out how to divide it up in a sensible way. >> reporter: the players' union estimates more than $160 million in revenue would be lost in cities with teams and more than 3700 jobs lost. not to mention the of the lost -- not to mention the lost sales tax revenues on game days in oakland and san francisco. there's one interesting local note here. the oakland alameda county coliseum authority actually

spends more than it makes on game day. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alison. it is 7:18. apple is giving some of its customers $100 refunds. anyone who bought a first- generation ipad between february 16th and march 2nd, the date the price cut was announced is eligible. customers will need to request the refund by the 16th of this month and have their original receipts. the cupertino-based company has a policy of making the refunds when it permanently reduces the price for any of its products. this weekend you are being asked to put down your laptop, ipod, turn off your tv. from sunset tonight, to sunset tomorrow, it's being call a national day of unplugging. people across the country are being asked to avoid most technology and instead connect with loved ones.

a bizarre court appearance of a man accused of driving object freeway with his wife on the hood. christopher carroll reportedly refused help from a public defender yesterday and then told the judge, "i did that all to my wife. i'm guilty." police say his wife suffered hypothermia after he drove from manteca to pleasanton with her on the hood of the van. he's expected to return to court on tuesday and is held without bail. a man accused of robbing grocery store customers reportedly committed these crimes after he was let out of

jail. he is suspected of robbing at least nine shoppers as they arrived home from the safeway this year. "the oakland tribune" report these crimes occurred after the judge released him on his own recognizance. 7:23. some teen criminals, they are apparently using twitter to plan their crimes. take a look at this flash mob left video posted on youtube. -- youtube. about 50 teenagers grabbed what they wanted and then left. this is also happening in chicago, it's a problem there. police say three stores have been targeted in recent weeks. police say teenagers are lanking -- are planning their crimes through twitter. 7:4. we want to check in with sal. sal, we did earlier a story about unplugging for 24 hours. >> not a chance. not a chance. not a chance. >> okay. all right. good morning, everybody. let's take a look at the commute now. if you are driving on 101 northbound as you come up to the tully road overcrossing, there a big rig apparently carrying a huge satellite dish that was not able to make it over the cross -- the crossing. traffic is slowing down. it's kind of a big backup here, unexpected one in san jose. also this morning's commute is going to be okay westbound as you come up to the toll plaza. it is light. and this morning's commute on interstate 880 north and southbound, that traffic is moving along very nicely. here's rosemary. we've made it to the last business day of the week and we have great weather in store. hopefully that puts you in a good mood. just a little bit of haze, a little bit of pog for some of our -- patchy fog for some of our bay area low cases. that's about it. chillier start for the

afternoon. 60s. high clouds rolling in, again, ahead of the next pacific storm expected for saturday. upper 40s right around san francisco as well as oakland. by noontime, mid-50s to low 60s. if you are outdoors for your friday evening, maybe out for the evening we're looking at pretty mild conditions and our overall highs from the 50s to the mid up ir60s. the rain -- the middle upper 60s. we could be mostly cloudy. we know how it goes. we'll be sitting in the mid-60s for tomorrow afternoon. saturday night into sunday, the rain moves in and we're all wet come sunday. it looks like scattered showers throughout the evening hours all the way into monday before we begin to dry out. our coolest afternoon will be monday. we're dry on tuesday and hitting 60 in the afternoon. time now, 7:26. this just in, a major announcement in florida. it could put high-speed rail in that state off track.

. 7:29. police have issued an important warning for walkers and jo joggers. police are describing a violent attack right in front of a residential neighborhood. that's where ktvu's kraig debro is now to tell us exactly what happened. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, story. i just spoke with the police. i have some new information. we're on san anselmo avenue. police have releed information -- released new information. she tells me there are no witnesses to the crime. the res didn't said the suspect came up from behind her, pulled on her color and -- collar and when she told him she didn't

have any money, he hit her with a rock. everything we've talked to was surprised to hear such a violent crime in an area not known for much of any kind of crime. >> you carry a phone because you think about what happens if your bike breaks down. but you never think about being assaulted by another human being. >> i have never heard of anything like that happening there. i didn't hear about it over here. this story is really surprising. it seems awfully safe around here. >> reporter: following the attack, the neighbors put together a flier to warn people to be careful. the victim walked home and drove herself to kaiser hospital in terra linda. the hospital then called police. a number of people around here say that that part of the town, greenfield avenue, is not only a residential area but it's also a bike route. so in addition to neighbors out there, many people are wondering if a piker -- biker may have seen what happened. we're gonna try to get that

question answered. reporting live in san anselmo, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:31. overnight a rollover crash on highway 4 in antioch sent the driver to the hospital. the highway patrol says a car heading eastbound on highway 4 left the roadway, rolled over several times and ended up on the westbound side of the highway near the hillcrest avenue exit. the woman driving the car had to be extracted using the jaws of life. she was taken to the hospital. all of this happened just after 11:00 last night. still not clear yet what caused the car to leave the roadway. time now, 7:32. a homeless man has died after a hit-and-run crash in vallejo. police say the driver is still on the loose. this happened wednesday night. the 63-year-old victim was hit by a truck while riding his bike on driveway near tualamie street. the truck match, the description was later found

abandoned nearby. police are searchth truck for evidence and have some leads, they say. also, marin county investigators want to know what killed a novato man whose body was found buried in his own backyard. now, the man's wife, 55-year- old evelyn smith remains a person in this case -- a person of interest in this case. she reportedly bought 300 pounds of september, about the time her husband was last seen by neighbors. but her attorney is not saying whether it was used for patio area where the body was found. yesterday, the coroner confirmed that the body is that of dale smith. investigators are not saying if there's signs of foul play. the investigation continues into the latest frightening attack at napa state hospital. it happened earlier this week. hospital workers tell yous here at ktvu news that a patient -- tell us here at ktvu news that a patient ripped off the

clothing of a female and tried to rape her. >> it took five staff members to contain him and get him off this woman while he continued to attempt to rape her. >> they say the suspect was not -- they say the patient was not particularly considered dangerous. this is the third attack on a napa county state worker in recent months, including an attack that took a nurse's life. a san jose school could become part of the protests. the church is protesting the production of the play "the

"that play is about gay student, mathew shepherd. new this morning, florida governor, rick scott, has just been given permission to turn down federal money for a high- speed rail project. scott has the authority to say no to the more than $2 billion in federal funds for the project. scott's final decision is expected sometime today. if he does decide to pass on accepting the funding, it will go to other states pursuing high-speed rail and that includes california. caltrain is getting help from the transportation valley authority. last night, the vta board approved five resolutions that will help provide financial support for caltrain. caltrain face as $30 billion shortfull and declared a fiscal emergency yesterday. caltrain does not have its own dedicated source of money and depends on money from other agencies. b.a.r.t.

also, crude oil is trading above $103 a barrel. that's bringing the markets down. dow is down 15, the nasdaq down 10. s&p, down 6. target,s nation's second large -- target, the nation's second largest retailer agreed to pay for illegal dumping. the state of california, the cities of los angeles and san diego sued target claiming 240 of their stores violated california law when it disposed of many pesticides, pool chemicals, paints and other hazardous -- other hazardous waste. local companies are alameda, contra costa, solano. pg&e is promising to take two very concrete steps to improve safety as well as public awareness about the public pipelines. all customers living within 2,000 feet of pipelines will now get a safety letter from

welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. a brinks truck is causing problems on the san mateo bridge. what's happening there, sal? >> well, this truck flipped over about 40 minutes ago. you saw live pictures here as the crews were tending to the injured. now they are trying to right the truck on westbound 92 just past the toll plaza. so a couple of lanes are blocked. in fact, now -- in fact it's balloon from -- gone from two lanes blocked to more. as they have a cable up to the truck. it looks like they might -- it might be getting righted up. the truck is -- the lanes are closed and the backup is almost back all the way to interstate 880. so we do not recommend using

these tire tracks belong to the brinks armored truck. what we're told is that brinks truck hit the curb at the end of the toll plaza and flipped over. that source tells me the brinks driver may have been going too fast. there's four lanes closed. you have the squad cars, the brinks truck and a tow truck trying to right the truck. right now, traffic is being diverted. once it gets past the toll plaza where the truck is, it's smooth sailing. but it's getting past that toll plaza. newschopper2 was out here and can really give you a better idea of what this accident tooked like -- looked like for computers above. again, this happened around 7:15. we know there were two

we have developing news. the truck that flipped over on the san mateo bridge, they've righted it. you can see the chp officers are getting ready to open all of the lanes. that's good news on westbound 2. it looks like they temporarily held this lane but now all lanes are open. let's go to san jose now. northbound 101, there is a stuck big rig. it's a satellite truck. it's actually -- they are bringing a satellite to lockheed martin, according to chp. that satellite was on its way up to the facility in sunnyvale. couldn't make it underneath the tully road crossing.
