good afternoon. a major milestone in the bay bridge project is reached early this morning. we have new video an an up close look at what's up next. with the curb and toll plaza, that caused the truck to lose balance and overturn. >> an overturned armored truck blocks a bridge approach for hours. it was one of two major traffic problems. i can remember an incident in college where one of our

guys got hit. good afternoon. we begin with an important milestone on the new span of the bay bridge. ktvu's cloudin wong jones us live to explain why this was such a significant improvement and what's next in the long project. good afternoon, claudine. >> reporter: good evening, tory. yes, the plan was to have the crew working at this hour on the tower but if you are looking, there are no crews working right now and that's because the last leg is already in place. that project wrapped up around 1:30 this among, 30 hours ahead of schedule. we are now getting an up close look at what's next. this is new video begin to us today by cal tran. >> if you think of the main tower as a school with four legs, we have completed a leg. >> there were four pieces of

this last leg, each weighing 400 tons, each hanging 400 feet in the air. >> if you see them, you can see how much they are. on tuesday, the schedule was threatened by wind and rain but the weather improved enough to get the work done ahead of schedule. the tower now stands at 480 feet. by april, it will be 425. and this is the stool, this is the top of the stool, something known as a saddle. >> the cable that will hold up this entire rig will be housed in there and then the scale. this bolt right here is as big as a softball. it is a rare sight to see. on the ground today, what cal tran says will soon be fitting in the air for what they hope will be for the next 150 years. it's definitely unique. this is the only suspension bridge in the world with one cable that loops around.

several misconduct investigations following the arrests of several drug dealers. ktvu obtained the video of one drug arrest. traffic is flowing on san mateo bridge shortly after a brinks truck overturned. it happened on the westbound lanes on the toll plaza. the highway patrol says that the brinks truck hit the curb causing it to overturn. a large tow truck had to be brought in to upright the truck. before the scene could be completely clear, the cargo aboard the truck had to be unloaded. >> again, it's brinks truck. they did have money on board. they had to have another truck come and transfer what was in there, in the truck that crashed. >> reporter: the mess backed up traffic all the way to highway 880 but the highway patrol managed to clear the traffic by

9 a.m> >> and a mess in san jose. a truck had to pull off and stop because it could not clear a freeway overcrossing and that forced the chp to shut down the north bound lane so that the truck could be turned around and taken off the capital expressway. the truck was carrying a satellite dish for lockheed martin. there are serious concerns for young athletes, especially sports-induced concussion. ktvu is live on the on the gathering. >> reporter: it just so happens that the football field is right next door to this venue. one of the players told a story about a teammate he once had after that player was hit. his concussion was so bad it left him thinking he was a super hero. >> this was not even a game. this was practice but he

thought he was batman but he still wanted to go back and practice. >> the whole idea was, you know, you weren't manly if you didn't get back in and play. >> reporter: student athletes, educators and parents gathered to hear the concussion effects on sports. there is a bill being sponsored that requires parents being informed if they sustain a concussion. the issue of con cushion in high school sports is getting aterms not because of injuries but because players are allowed to play too soon after getting a concussion. 40% of high school players returned to play too early after getting a head injury. in addition to notifying parents, a b 25 sponsors says that the bill would give parents chance to become educated about concussions and former players say that if passed, the bill can erase the stigma of coming out of the game. >> i think it addresses the

stigma that it's not cool to come out of the game or to say that you are injured. you know, if you have a coach or someone say, hey, you've got to get back in there. >> they were not even aware -- the coaches were not even aware of some of the long-term health effects. you know, there is alzheimer's disease, memory loss, suicide attempts. >> reporter: early this morning, former professional football player -- earlier this month, rather, former professional player dave duerson committed suicide. he had talked about donating his brain to science. the brain will undergo a series of tests to determine if there is any chronic disease, early alzheimer's or encephaloppathy. speaking of football, we

learned that the players association and the nfl have agreed a week long extension of their contract talks. sources close to the negotiations reported the extension. that could have put the season in jeopardy. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> no football to be playing in september, man, that will be -- that will be a travesty for a lot of businesses, unfortunately, in this economy: that could mean a loss of more than 167 million-dollar and more than 3700 jobs this morning, the labor department released the february jobs report and it shows the unmany employment rate in the country is going

down. the unemployment rate dropped to 8.9%. the economy ated 193,000 jobs with manufacturing, health care, education, professional and business services, all adding new jobs. but retailers and some state and local governments cut jobs. despite the good news on jobs, rising oil prices are once again spooking wall street. crude i will is about $104 a barrel due to the escalating fighting in oil-rich libya. right now, a live look at the big board, the dow currently down 132. nasdaq down 19. s&p is down 13. california's latest jobless rate also wept down but not by much. the january figure released today shows unemployment at 12.4%. that's down .1% from december

the california added 12500 jobs but 2.2 million people remain out of work. california's unemployment rate has been above 12% for 17 months. barak obama food -- global food prices are the highest they have been in 17 years. the food index was up 2.2%. that is the highest level since january 1990. they say that the increase was driven by the higher prices of cereal, meat and dairy product. we went to an independent producer. prices are also affected by the recent freeze in mexico. they even put up signs warning customers. >> it's affected bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchinis. >> food prices could increase further due to a rise in oil prices. that's because, when those prices are high, there is an increased demand for alternative fuel made from crop. gas prices are on the move

once again in the bay area. according to aaa, they jumped an average of 3 cents a gallon just overnight. ktvu's cameras spotted prices over 4 there are a gallon for regular gas at a shell station on oak street just south of i- 880. the average price is $3.86 today up 24 cents since last week and it's 46 cents a gallon higher than just one month ago. you are being asked to turn off and put away your electronic devices for a day. ahead, reaction to that idea. burglars have targeted dozens of vehicles in one location. we'll tell you where and precautions you can take great weather in the bay area for wintertime. meteorologist rosy orosco will be here. a couple of hits, a cut and then he runs off.

down the building. students were being escorted out. students say they got the school to agree to a town hall meeting on budget cuts. the demands also included conduct -- student conduct charges dropped from the occupational of wheeler hall in 2009. the unrest continues in libya where at least 13 people are reported dead in the latest clash between muammar qaddafi's forces and protesters. the latest clash happened 13 miles east of the capital of tripoli. there are reports that government troops fired on peaceful protesters after friday prayers in tripoli. in the meantime, the u.s. air force is helping to supply relief to thousands of refugees who fled libya and who are now in tunisia. you may smell gas in

train commuters in fremont are being warned about doapses of recent car break-ins. it's been happening at the centerville train depot. the primary target is loose change. more than 40 vehicles were broken into early thursday morning. we spoke to one man who just found his car with windows broken early this morning. he says that's not the first time it's happened to him. >> i started parking over in that parking lot for a while. you know, it kind of moves around, it's expected to happen now and then, actually. >> reporter: the parking lot is owned by the city of fremont. police say that the car may be less of a target if you lose anything valuable out of sight, including money, even coins. a man was driving with his wife clinging to the car.

he refused a public defender. he says i did that to my wife and i deserve everything. had he wife suffered from hypothermia. a new warning for bikers, workers after a violent attack by a man wearing a mask. it happened wednesday night before 8:30 in san anlmo. a man wearing a ski mask snuck up behind a woman while she was jogging and yanked her to the ground. that's when the victim says that the man demanded money. the woman told the map she didn't have anything leading the man to attack her with a small knife and a rock. the attack is forcing some neighbors to change their routines. >> two days, i like to walk on my own.
