that could be jeopardized by this police department scandal. >> reporter: this afternoon, the chief reported he shut down. after the city's public defenders office this week said the officers violated search and seizure laws. godal said he called the fbi to ask them to step in only to find out they had already begun an investigation. chief godan emphasized the officers have not been charged and are considered innocent until proven guilty. but the fbi investigation now joins an internal investigation and an investigation led by george gascon. the man who was police chief during the incident. >> we have one threat going through the investigation of the allegations against the officers. and then another track is going through all prior cases as well as pending casing that may be

involving any of these officers. >> prosecutors and public defenders will be working through this week to count the cases that may involve the officers. >> we may have an individual that is in jail today that shouldn't be there because of corruptioning evidence. >> reporter: prosecutors tell us they hope to avoid a repeat of last year's police narcotics lab scandal in which about 600 drug cases were dismissed. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. protesters who are opposed to a gang injunction zone if oakland are gathered at city hall. paul chambers is on the scene. >> reporter: we're live here at city hall, in the last 15 minutes, take a look. the rally for a gang injunction has stepped up. let's take a look at video from earlier today. they started the march from fremont high school. they make their way down to

city hall. they had a temporary stop at international and 14th avenue where they blocked an interception just for a short period of time. what the group wants to do is stop the city attorney of oakland from getting gang injunctions. they want to put pressure on city hall to stop. we are back here once again, you can see the people are out here hanging out. it's been a pretty peaceful rally. they want the state attorney to stop the gang injunctions where he says nortenos has committed a lot of violent crimes. much of the violent crimes that have happened in that area. they hope that their presence out here maybes oakland city council members and oakland city attorneys stop the gang injunctions which they say are very racist. i'm paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. so far it's been a normal and relatively quiet day. it affected at least a thousand students when 26 classes at

wheeler hall were cancelled. eight people were finally let out, about nine khráb 30 last night after being perched on the outside of the building four stories up. they were all cited and released. you saw it all play out during the 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. newscast. the students say they got university fishes to agree on a town hall meeting on budget cuts. officials also agreed to consider dropping student misconduct charges stemming from a 2009 protest. san francisco police say they are trying to curve a rash of gang violence in the mission district. during the past few week, four people have been shot in the mission and two others have been stabbed. a 24-year-old man was killed. the violence is a result of escalating feuds between two rival latino gangs. >> i think we have officers that will spend much more time

in mission watching the norteno- sureno activity. >> reporter: police say they have met with community and business leaders in the mission and increased patrols in an effort to curve the violence. an inmate who was accidentally released from the city jail in dublin is back behind barrings. ismael cesda was captured this morning. we broke the story yesterday at 5:00 but now that one union is on board with pay cuts will the city's ten other unions follow suit and will it be enough. janine de la vega spent the day trying to get answers to those tough questions. >> reporter: frank, firefighters here at fire station 13 and firefighters at other stations will be voting over the weekend whether or not to approve a 10% cuts in wages and benefits. this is a significant

concession they are hoping will save jobs. the san jose fire department is the most thinly staffed department in the county according to the firefighters union. that's part of the reason they agreed to a pay cut. >> we are doing what we can to save jobs and save property of the community. the cuts, budget cuts if they were to go through would have a devastating impact on the community. >> reporter: the city faces a $105 million deficit and is asking all the unions to take a 10% reduction in wages and benefits for the entire lenght of their next contract. >> we have ten other unions that we're negotiating with and we certainly hope it paves the way for reaching improvements. >> the police officers association and mef the municipal union are are in current negotiations with the city. walter lynne manages garbage and recycling in the city.

he says he can't afford to take a 10% cut. >> now i'm looking at my mortgage, refinancing my house as well too. if we can't come up with that money, then i'm not too sure if i can even keep my house as well too. >> reporter: city officials say they are facing a grim reality. everyone if all the unions agree to a 10% reduction in compensation, the city will still have a 60 million budget shortfall. that means there will still be significant lay offs and cuts in city services. >> money that firefighters are given are going to hopefully lessen the need for lay offs. we unfortunately can't guarantee it'll avoid them all together. >> we called the mef to see where they were at in the negotiation process and if the firefighters union, if that influenced their decision. but we did not receive any calls back. janine de la vega, ktvu. an alert truck driver

avoided a crash. an oversized big rig carrying satellite equipment came to a quick halt when the driver realized his truck was too big for the sulley over pass. the highway patrol tells us the driver took the turn off that was supposed to avoid that overpass. but construction in the area now forces traffic underneath it. >> this could have been a very tragic because he was 16 feet tall, and the overcrossing is approximately 15'tall. the big rig is so wide it also would have wiped out the guardrail. and caltrans and the crews building the bay tower are celebrating tonight. the final footings of the bridge have been put in place. this is our camera from emeryville shooting these pictures. time lapse video from caltrans shows them hanging 400 feet in the air while being moved

slowly into place. engineers say you can kind of think of the tower as a giant stool. this face wraps up work on the four legs when the cap or seat is added. hopefully by april. the tower will then be ready to support suspension cables and the new freeway. another jump in gas prices means it will now cost you $4 for a gallon of regular in a bay area station. regular unleaded is almost $4.10. aaa says the average price in oakland is $3.86. that's 46-cents higher than a month ago. prices are everyone higher in san francisco. turmoil in libya and other oil markets will likely keep prices climbing. analysts say oil prices will also impact food prices due to delivery costs. global prices are already the highest they've been in 20 years, some of those higher prices are now showing up in bay area stores. a clerk in oakland told ktvu a

recent freeze in mexico is affecting prices here. some of the fastest rising costs are among dairy, meat and vegetable. food banks spend millions of the dollars on produce, so when prices go up it could be devastating on banks and the people that rely on them for help. a look at their struggle tonight on the 10:00 news. unemployment figures out today show california's job recovery lagging behind the rest of the country. the jobless rate was 12.5% in january. that was slightly down in february. employers nationwide added 192,000 jobs to their payrolls in february. analysts blame job losses in local and state government for the disparity. on wall street, worries about the price of oil --

price of oil down 20%. governor jerry brown brought his budget message to san francisco. >> reporter: we were there for the governor's meeting with bay area business leaders. it was a short meeting about half an hour and he was essentially there just to get their endorsement for his budget plan that includes tax extensions. it's a plan that if it fails could lead to more drastic cuts. the protests against looming budget cuts go on almost every day, this afternoon community college supporters dropped off ramen noodles. >> that amounts to $300 a year for your average student. so it's actually a lot. if the fee increases go through, our students have told

us they'll be eating ramen morning, afternoon and night. significant for the business groups since the plan requires certain taxes to be extended for several years. as brown met with business leaders, lawmakers in san francisco are preparing the budget for a vote. it contains cuts that will likely pass. but republicans have not signed up to put the tax question before voters. >> if it is not acceptable, either because the republicans will not allow the people to vote on it or if the people choose not to have the tax extensions then we will have 25 million in cuts. that i promise. within the past half hour, we learned that the state senate does indeed plan to

a very rough morning on one bay area bridge and you saw it play out right here on mornings on two. an armoured truck overturned on the san mateo bridge just west of the toll plaza. it blocked lanes for more than an hour. the chp cleared the brinks truck this morning. you saw it live on mornings on two. the accident caused problems with the morning commute but no one was hurt. an autopsy has determined

the cause of death for a 16- year-old basketball player in michigan who collapsed just seconds after scoring a game winning shot. the coroner says leonard collapsed after scoring the winning basket inover time last night capping his team's perfect season. he was rushed to the hospital where two hours later he was pronounced dead. >> former nfl players are teaming up with the bay area lawmakers to change rules regarding high school athletes and concussions. former 49er guy mcintire and bradshaw attended a meeting. she is trying to rally support for her bill that would require written consent from a health care professional and legal guardian in order to send an athlete back into a game after suffering a concussion. >> you have to have somebody that's impartial that is looking at it from what is for the best interest of this

person health wise. >> the bill applies to all high school sports not just football. growing up in an area known for crime, a lot of people thought they would be just another statistic. but mcclimens football team they have proved them all wrong. as it turns out, all 16 seniors say they are on their way to college. but there's only one thing that escapes them, a letterman jacket. paul chambers introduces us to a group of kids the you wouldn't be able to forget. >> reporter: this year they made school history. >> when they say who's the best team ever to come out of mac, it's going to be this year 2011. >> we had a 12-0 season. >> in that team were 16 seniors who all plans of continuing their education, so far eight of six have been accepted. most of the young men have had major obstacles to overcome. >> i've had kids who have

witnessed their siblings being murdered before them. >> a lot of my family members are local drug dealers around here, but i chose to go a different rout. >> when i got to mcclemmons stayed with the football team and that kept me out of the streets. kept me focused on grades. >> that unity helped keep this team on the rise. the team's average gpa is 3.1. now he wants to reward them with a prize. the prize, a letterman jacket. >> the letterman jackets talks about a lot of good things. >> i got a lot of patches but i never had a chance to get one. >> i always wanted the m right over my heart. >> if you have that black m on your letterman's jacket. that means you are maxed out and you bleed black. >> reporter: in an area where surviving is a struggling, it's hard to raise funds. the jackets will represent

temperatures. here's a look at the satellite, radar so far, high clouds, the rain showers up to our north. but the set up for tomorrow, i'm going to hold on to the clouds. rainfall develops in general from 4:00 to 10:00 tomorrow night. there's a chance of a few light showers up in the north bay tomorrow afternoon. this system moves through tomorrow night into sunday morning. and for sunday, i am expecting still an unsettled weather pattern. with showers likely especially for sunday morning as we head into the afternoon hours. we might be able to pull back on some of the coverage and probability, that once again is for sunday. we have a few pop up showers, then we take this into sunday morning. this is not a big deal but still the coverage increases. early sunday morning, not a lot to show you in the south bay but still a few light showers out there. and at 10:00 still some rain showers across the bay area. by 5:00 and 6:00 sunday evening as we head into sunday evening,

we scale back on the coverage and probability. tomorrow morning it will be cloudy. by lunchtime mostly cloudy, 55 to right around 60. then by 3:00, still clouds out there and temperatures there's the eventual range in the 50s to even a few low 60s across the region. san francisco 61, hayward 63 degrees. san jose tops out 65 and fremont 64. here is a look ahead to your five day forecast and for your weekend. your weekend always in view. we will highlight for you. showers likely. especially into sunday morning. chance of a lingering shower for monday, monday probably one of the coolest days of the period. and then finally maybe a couple of dry days too, two dry days in a row. feels strange to say that for tuesday and wednesday of next week. >> thank you, mark. a mountain lion spotted. not once but twice in wood side over the past 24 hours. the cat was spotted at about 12:00 a.m. near high and wood side road.

another sighting was reported at about the same time yesterday. it's not known if it's the same cat or if there were two of them either way the advise is the same, avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk or at night. coming up a happy update. it's about a man who's artificial leg was stolen. plus why nfl fans have another seven days to sweat it out over their beloved sport. comfort couldn't hurt.

a heartwarming update to a story we first brought you last month about an oakland man who's prosthetic leg was stolen. today turner was fitted for that new leg. >> it makes a huge difference in my life because that would have been a lot of sitting down. and there would have been a lot of anger, and there would have been a lot of wheelchairs involved and i don't like either one of those. >> turner lost his real leg in a motorcycle accident 25 years ago. we're told his new leg should be ready in two to three weeks. mark is here now with sports. some potential good news i
