up and a lot of people wonder if they could hit $5. in the past two weeks, gas prices have jumped 34 cents a gal be. one solution the white house is considering is trying to tap into oil preserves. but they say that could prompt the middle east to keep gas prices high. that's what happened in the year 2000 when president clinton used some of the gas reserves. >> 2000 released by clinton reduced the prices only by 3.5%. if you work through today's prices, that's about 7 cents a gallon. >> the average price of regular is 3.50 nationwide and 3.89 in california. it's 3.90 in oakland and san jose and 3.94 in san francisco. although at many stations the price is well over $4 a gallon.

off to accomplish so much more. >> i got a message from his sister -- >> reporter: dorothy is getting important but painful messages today from the family of fallen u.s. army soldier mark c. wells. he knew wells his entire life before he moved to texas. the expert from campbell was killed saturday in the province of afghanistan. >> i just got an e-mail from the parents and i was shocked. i was speechless. i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: the family says wells was killed when he stepped on a hidden bomb when he was trying to dismantle an explosive device. >> his parents told me he needed to be on the bomb squad and needed to go for special training and he was smart and intuitive. i think he was just really interested. >> reporter: as we talked with the woman, she shared messages she was just getting from the wells' family.

think any other students are at risk. but just in case over the weekend, school rooms were cleaned. >> we weren't informed to do anything other than conduct a normal school day. >> reporter: an autopsy was performed on the 5-year-old today. firefighters made a dramatic rescue after a car accident in pittsburg late this afternoon. it happened at 3:00 at the intersection love rental road. a car and a mini -- love rental road. a car and a minivan slammed into each other. there were five people in that minivan all were in car seats. they escaped uninjured. the cause of this accident is under consideration. a late winter storm could dump as much as 30 inches of snow on parts of number and upstate new york. more than a foot of snow has fallen in syracuse, new york,

service comment line. live in san francisco, jim vargas, ktvu channel 2 news. happening right now in san jose, members of the public are sounding off on a plan to convert some high-occupancy lanes to express lanes that so low drivers could pay to use. the proposal would affect h.o.v. lanes to 880 in san jose. under the proposal, so low drivers would pay a toll in order to ride in the express lane. a dozen bay area road construction projects will be delayed this year. that's because the state plans to cancel the sale of this. one of the biggest projects in jeopardy is between menlo park. all of the project scheduled to start this year will be delayed one more year. a new poll out today from consumer report finds many young people are still talking

snow by this weekend, adding to the 38 feet it has received since october. wow. 38feet. all right. let's look at our weather now. over to bill martin. what are we looking at this evening, bill? >> we will, we got a few clouds out there. there was a little bit of drizzle in the north bay. cloudy and mild tonight. tomorrow looks like a nice day. we go outside. i want to show you where the sprinkles would come from. live stormtracker2, you can see the clouds up here, this whole area driving to the north. this is good rain up here. but that's into oregon. so this area down here, as it moves in will trigger few overnight sprinkles. not a big deal, shouldn't be enough to mess with your morning commute. as we go into the next few day, high pressure takes charge, especially on wednesday, when we see temperatures going into the 70s, upper 60s and low 70s. sanjose tomorrow, partly cloudy, i think the sprinkles will be north of san jose if they occur. daytime high in downtown san jose, 64 degrees.

so a nice day. tomorrow is kind of a transition day into a really nice day on wednesday. but the current satellite image shows everything, the mown men -- the momentum, everything going through, most of the rain going through. the computer model sees it like this. we get into tuesday morning and here's the sprinkles i've been talking about. i don't know if this will even hit the ground. not a big deal. you see the close proximity to the main rainband and then somewhere up by the cliffhouse in san francisco, this would be drizzle as well. you can see why i'm not really forecasting for rain or an issue for your commute. this is basically a nonevent for the bay area and the mountains. as we get into wednesday, there is your day. temperatures in the 60s and 70s. wednesday looks good. thursday things start to change around. by thursday, 8:00 a.m., look at what we got. it's still not a big deal. you can see the main rain here and you can see the lesser activity down here. that's what's going to swing through the bay area as we go
