what are you going to do to get pensions under control? alameda school district officials say if measure a loses, teacher lay offs and class size increases would soon follow. the polls close at 8:00. reporting live in alameda, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. and there are two other special elections in the bay area today. both involving parcel taxes, the brisbane school district wants to add a special property tax of not more than $150,000 a year to hire a teacher's aid and music and art teacher. we have stunning surveillance video to show you. san jose police released this video to us late today.

it shows the scene at the me xicali club. a man wearing a bullet-proof vest is seen chasing the club owner and then pulling him into a car. three other people were killed during the shoot out. we'll have a live report for you. police are going to walk us through this tape and tell us what it might mean for the investigation this we have new information tonight about the police misconduct within the san francisco police department. eight more cases were dismissed today. >> we anticipate that there will be many other case that is will be dismissed. the number is still unclear but we're going to try to get through the majority of those cases by tomorrow. >> reporter: the allegations stem from the release of video by the public defenders office showing sf police officers

here in milpedas cause the failure in san bruno? let's go directly inside. from here, natural gas sent throughout pg & e vast system including the peninsula and san francisco. repair crews here in milpedas were replacing a back up power supply during that repair there was a sudden loss of power. a second energy source failed to kick in. the count control center here in san francisco saw pressure gauges dropping to zero in three major pipelines apparently in error. although the pipes were open wide, it says there were no failures. only a minor one a few pounds

groups and the counties that grew the most. paul chambers has been pouring over the numbers and he has this report. >> 70 years ago we had a population of about 100,000. we're now 1 million people in contra costa county. the numbers for the 2010 census is out and it shows the population has grown. san francisco the fourth largest city has an increase of 3.7%. a growth in population can mean several things, where the county will spend its money on transportation and how it will draw lines for its government. >> there will likely be a shift in the two districts that represent the contra costa county. so we'll have to redraw lines. >> cocoa county had a 10.6% increase in population. santa clara is up 5.9%. other counties are 5% increase.

the racial make up of the state has also changed. hispanics and latinos 28% of the population. the asian population represents 30% of the population. that's also up by 38%. >> it helps us understand better where we need to make improvement in infrastructure. >> the country's population center is edging away from the midwest traditionally known as the nation's heart land. the bay is now home to the four fasters states. those states are nevada, arizona, utah and idaho. california and texas added to a southwestern population tilt making up more than .25 of the nation's gains since the year 2000. we continue our coverage of the

new census reports on our website just go to the bay area tab and click on census. you will see a map that shows more information about the new census details. the southern california suburb of bell is holding a special election today. voters there are getting a chance to make changes in their leadership. voters went to the polls to pick a new city council. eight current and former bell officials are charged with stealing more than $5 million through inflated salaries and other scams. tonight a family is hoping that someone out there will do the right thing. a backpack containing the ashes of the ár a man was stolen on saturday just a few minutes before the funeral was set to begin. late this afternoon, there's been no signs of the remains.

hockabaugh's family is asking the ashes and urn be returned to the police station no questions asked. and here's a question. what is a pimp. that question was brought up in court today. the man's attorney is trying to get the case dropped. the court will make the court ruling been 90 days. it's not going to take the fbi20 minutes to go through 70 million fingerprints. the fbi has a new computer system that makes quick work of going through the data base. the fbi conducts 7,000 fingerprint checks every day. the new one is not just faster, the new system turned up 9,000 new additional matches during the test. people are being warned of another mountain lion sighting

in the area. someone spotted a large lion mountain in wood side on jocelyn lane. officials tell us it's the fourth siding in the wood side area since last week. authorities are warning people to avoid hiking at dawn, dusk or at night because that's when mountain lions are most active. you can certainly feel it today is a bit warmer than yesterday. according to our chief meteorologist bill martin the warmer is going to keep on warming up. >> tomorrow temperatures will reach into the 50s. cloudy out there in some places. live storm tracker 2 shows a few clouds lingering off the coast. some some low clouds as well. we're going to see fog showing up. out towards davis and vacaville then to the delta. tomorrow we're going to see a

hitting the roads. los angeles had the worse traffic conditions. san francisco ranked 6 with a drive time 50% longer than normal nonpeak drive time hours. san francisco nummi light rail is back up tonight. nummi officials say the problem began this morning. it affected the financial district. nummi set up bus shuttles to help the system. >> every time you have a system this hold, we keep trying to sustain it as much as possible. on this day we didn't do that and we apologize to our customers. >> reporter: the crews waited for the morning rush to go to the area and fix the problem.

there's not a day that goes by that i don't have at least one emotional break down. i do every night when i'm lying in bed. >> reporter: alan brown lost his 17-year-old son joshua in 2003 in a crash involving a teenage driver. today he spoke out in favor of a proposed new graduated license law that would force every state to put limits on passengers for new drivers, late night teen driving and cell phone use. jim portel's daughter was also killed when another teen driver flipped the car she was riding in. >> my daughter was the only one that died. and i truly believe if we had these laws enacted back then she might be alive today. >> reporter: supporters of the bill also released a survey of more than 1,300 teenagers that found 70% of teens support a graduated driver's license law and that 78% agree on restrictions on nighttime

driving. perhaps most surprising, the vast majority of teens favored a ban on texting behind the wheel for beginning drivers. the pentagon says it's doing everything it can to get extra care for troops. it has only spent 300 million of the $535 million approved by congress as special pay for service members. the members were for troops that were forced to serve beyond their enlistment term. the the crews were supposed to claim the money by last september but they now have until june. and we know that married military women are twice as likely to face divorce as men. and for enlisted women that rate jumps to three times. about 220,000 women have served in afghanistan and iraq. when you compare military members to their civilian peers, the women have a higher divorce rate, but for men the rate is lower. a hearing wrapped up late

another crucial hearing today involving jury selection in the upcoming barry bonds trial. this comes as we're getting a clearer picture of how the government begins to lay out a case that bonds lied to the grand jury about how he used steroids. rita williams is in court and she is live now with details on

what happened today. >> reporter: frank, the hearing here ended just two hours ago with the judge not yet deciding this question. this first amendment attorney asked the judge to allow the media and public to see the forms respective jurors fill out about their background. prosecutors and defense attorneys objected saying identifying jurors could lead to harassment. >> it's not the type of case where a juror tampering or witness tampering or threats to safety of the juror are at issue. in the past few weeks, the judges ruling have set the stage for the home run king's trial on charges he lied more than seven years ago when he told the grand jury he did not knowingly used performing enhancing drugs. the prosecution will call veteran giants clubhouse

channel 2 news. a student at berlinggame high school is in trouble today for what he says was a prank but police were not laughing. a search of the teen's home found no weapons. berkeley police are investigating a stand off that went on for hours before ending early this morning after the man apparently committed suicide. it started about 7:30 last night in a home on marin avenue right off of alameda. neighbors reported someone was firing shot from inside the house. police brought in a hostage negotiating team. for nine hours they tried to get the man to surrender. offers heard a gunshot, they went inside and found the man dead. police have not releasted the name of the suspect yet.

the tkpwoáfr governor is pushing for a june special election to approve increases on state taxes. the chamber expressed concern over the governor's proposal to eliminate redevelopment agencies. in about half an hour from now, mount diablo school district board members will be talking about unpleasant choices including more lay offs. the district may eliminate more librarians. a vote on the cuts is expected next week. an elementary school and a middle school in concord are already set to be closed. a tentative cost saving agreement just ratified by san jose firefighters was discussed today by firefighters. there will be four firefighters per truck instead of the

all right let's talk about the weather now. let's go to chief meteorologist bill martin, we're looking at maybe 70s tomorrow. >> i think we'll hit a couple of 70s out there. and looking at a picture of the anchovies. there's a lot of fish out there right now. we'll be following that story. it's pretty interesting. for us we're looking at a few clouds. it's going to warm up, now the thing with tomorrow, what will dictate whether we hit those 70s is this cloud cover. the clouds are going to continue filtering in tonight. we'll show you we're going to have partly cloudy skies today. if your neighborhood has mostly cloudy skies, you're going to hit close to 70. but if you get too much cloud cover it'll be hard to get 70s. mostly cloudy with patchy fog tonight. tomorrow partly cloudy it's going to go warmer. then this thursday deal right now the models are backed way

up on this. so i'm keeping it in. because any time, we have .05, maybe .10 but it's close enough to us that we want to keep it in there just so that chance -- that close to us gives us a chance for some drizzle or something and that could impact your day on thursday. in the meantime, high pressure is where it's supposed to be for this time of year. it's getting close to spring isn't it. so we'll see some valley fog in the morning. it'll form rapidly. it won't be an extensive patch of it. it'll be real defused and break up quickly. you know the spot. you can almost see it coming. clear, clear, clear and you drop down to a low lying area and you get the fog. that's the kind of day it is tomorrow. highs tomorrow will get into the 60s. a couple of low 70s possible. the main impact from this guy is that it's going to be a

from a new york city police helicopter has just been released. the chopper was launched to try to rescue people from the roof of the burning world trade center towers. this video was released as part of the investigation by the tower's collapse by the organization that oversees disasters. and almost everybody knows that very hungry caterpillar. well that caterpillar is going to work for children. what it's doing.

penguins at the monterey aquarium. but far behind the glass walls away from the crowds, prying eyes and other penguins a little chick is learning the ropes. aquarium keepers say it's not safe for him to be out on exhibit yet since he actually can't swim. now his human care givers are teaching him to be an education bird. >> we would bring him out and do you know our red carpet penguin that we do once a year when we bring him outside to the public to tell them about the challenges they are facing out in the wild. >> this baby penguin's name has not been determined is the in training to become more comfortable with people. the penguin chick should be available in early april after it loses its feathers and grows a waterproof coat. ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 is next.
