>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2news at six. >> good evening. i'm ken pritchett. >> i'm heather holmes. another crisis tonight in japan stemming from the 8.9 earthquake and tsunami. an emergency at a third nuclear reactor, the second today. there are reports but an official said an meltdown is a possibility. the ambassador to the united states denies there is evidence though of a meltdown. the nuclear agency said the cooling system malfunctioned at unit three of the plant that is 170 miles from tokoyo. earlier there was an explosion at the same complex of the outer building that houses the reactor. leaks have been detected. officials say 20kilometers is safe but it may change and go

wider. it's disturbing. >> evacuations have been ordered for all residents with in a dozen miles of the plant. that's more than 200,000 people and we also know that iodine tablets are being given out. back here the impact much the tsunami is very real investment live coverage. we start with deborah live in santa cruz where new evacuations are in place so engineers can look at damage. >> reporter: people here on the shore can watch but there is no dock access because the piers could be shaky. damage is thought to be at $17 million. that is not including the boats like this one, a 32-foot fishing boat just lifted out of the water with a crane in the last heir hour. it was wrecked by a natural disaster a world away. we went on a boat tour of the

boat. >> come on board. >> reporter: jeremy leonard took us on board. >> when i got here it was like a quake in a house. everything was on the ground, on the cabin, i noticed a leak down there. >> reporter: he said the waves tossed something under his boat putting a hole no it. >> we are sinking right now. >> reporter: more than a dozen sank, some attached to part of a dock that no longer exists. >> we just watched the dock fall apart from the pressure. >> reporter: the area hardest hit by the area, today police were escorting boat owners down this ramp, it was a dangerous walk back to the boats because the pathway broke apart. this boat is his home, after evacuating she went back for essentials. >> this is my clothes, son's clothes, husband's work clothes and that's it.

>> reporter: this map was produced by the tsunami warning center after the quake thursday night. you can see the travel times and as the waivers approached the coast it did a number on some of the tidal waves. crescent city, a report of 8.2 feet, around point arena nearly nine feet, san francisco closer to 9:00 a reading of 2.1, even down toward central and southern california activities to report for santa barbara, san diego. the tsunami advisory in effect last night and early this morning expired at 8:17 this morning. in weather we have a weather system to talk about and rain chances returning to the forecast. >> tonight nhk thinks that more than 900 have died from the quake and tsunami. the 8.9 was the 5th largest in

recorded history. 8,000 times stronger than the one that hit new zealand last month. >> reporter: it was a day of emotional after shock. they assessed the damage and tried to make sense of what happened. >> i was desperately trying to hold on to the shelf that was coming down on me but the ground shook to much i couldn't hold on. i fell and the shelf came on top of me but i was saved by a table that wedged in between. >> reporter: a port town the closest to the center but the damage extends for hundreds of miles. this is some of the first ground video taken of the area. floods and mudslides are causing yet more damage, fires are still burning with huge plumes of smoke. the prime minister despaired that the government couldn't plan for a disaster of this scale. >> the quake this time and the tsunami that passed the lymph what we could have imagined. >> reporter: more than 3,000 have been rescued, many pluck

from rooftops. others barely escaped with their lives yesterday when the tsunami hit. >> i had a neighbor shouting a tsunami is coming get out of the house. i saw the tsunami approaching. the elementary school, evacuation site was to far so i fled to a bridge. >> reporter: more personal videos have come out including these terrifying moments as the first wave hit. tonight thousands of survivors are in emergency shelters waiting for help. six million are without power and phone service to many parts of japan is spotty, cell and land lines. >> rescue efforts continue to be hurt by the after shocks we told you about. there have been at least 79 so

far. also hurting the rescue efforts, damaged structure and all of this is making for a horrible wait for those with loved ones in japan. we talked to people who are still waiting for word. >> reporter: this is peace plaza where a sunny day was the perfect setting for a big celebration but it's come with a dark cloud overhead. ♪ [ music ] the san francisco dojo opened the preview of the cherry blossom festival. >> i would like to dedicate this to the victims of the disaster in japan and our hearts and prayers go out to them. >> reporter: the celebration was part memorial, part pagent. >> what happened puts a huge pall over the festival of billions of dollars of loss,

connecticut. >> we are learning more tonight about the major blow the tsunami delivered to the northern california coast. a 25-year-old dustin weber is the man who drowned yesterday while photographing the swells. in crescent city the harbor master thinks the damage is nearly $25 million. at least eight boats were destroyed. because of the damage to the docks fishes boats that went -- into the ocean to ride out the tsunami had to remain at sea overnight and dock somewhere else along the coast. an after shock has hit japan in the last half hour. it took the east -- shook the east coast and caused buildings to sway. the usgs measured it at 6.2 and said the depth was about 15

storm tracker 2, not much to show you in terms of the rain coverage. we will switch to the satellite and seat clouds, they increase over the past one to two hours over a good portion of the bay area with partly to mostly cloudy, here is the weather story for tonight. we expect this, partly cloudy conditions, tomorrow more clouds, showers return, this isn't a big deal but will impact sunday especially toward the lat effort half of the day. we bring in more rain chances. here we go with the overnight lows, most areas in the 40s. santa rosa 44 degrees, san francisco 48, livermore 42 and the possibility of a few sprinkles, especially north of the bolden gate bridge. you can see the clouds moving in to the area earlier this afternoon. terms of a show activity not a lot to report. here is the expectation as we take this into sunday. the approach of this weak system. partly to mostly cloudy, showers develop. it'll be scattered in nature.

this isn't a widespread deal in terms of significant rainfall but the best chance of at least noticeable rainfall that will be for tomorrow evening. another look at the satellite and radar. you can see the approach up to the north up along the north coast. the forecast model shows you this, tomorrow morning not much in the way of rainfall this evening and then tomorrow morning here at 7:00 for sunday, we will put this in motion and a bit of activity. this is favors the north bay. 1:00 tomorrow and by late tomorrow afternoon scattered rain showers, not a big deal but a better bet as we head into tomorrow evening. that is all reflected in the forecast beginning tomorrow morning at 7:00. scattered clouds, 45 to 50. by 12:00 the chance of a shower and showers scattered in nature by 4:00. the possibility rises into sunday evening. temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60's. san jose 66 and a look ahead the five-day, could have a few

lingering showers, mainly monday morning. another system will increase the shower possibility by tuesday, especially by tuesday afternoon and tuesday night. a few lingering -- the morning hours and partly cloudy on thursday. afternoon temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. ly keep you updated and have more at ten. >> people in the bay area celebrating irish pride tonight even if they aren't irish. the bay area will toast saint patrick on thursday but today people lined up in the streets of san francisco for the big saint patrick's day parade. the celebration has deep roots in the city's history with the first parade taking place 160 years ago. plans underway to spruce up the san francisco side of the golden gate bridge in time for its 75th anniversary.
