this is kutv channel 2 news at 5:00. b.a.r.t. is using buss for shuttle passengers between the pleasant hill and pittsburg-bay point station. kutv's john sasaki has been talking to bart officials will the problem and the solution. john. >> reporter: heather, we're standing outside the concord b.a.r.t. station and look up there and you can see what is still a twisted mess. almost nine hours after this train derailed. although we just learned that crane is too small for this job, so i so a bigger one must be brought in. three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. a san francisco-bound b.a.r.t. train derailed at 9:20 this morning giving 65 passengers a major scare. >> an earthquake, like a bomb. you know what i'm saying? it was scare yes. >> i have ridden b.a.r.t. all my life and something like

this has never happened. a little scary. >> reporter: the ten-car train left the concord station, heading to pleasant hill. at the switch the 8th and 9th cars jumped the tracks. >> the train started to bump around a little bit and you know, it was feeling really awkward and all of a sudden he stopped and the lights went out and he said it derail. >> we can't tell you why it happened and we do have our chief safety officer on cane right now, performing initial evaluations. >> reporter: it certainly seems like the switching had something to do with it, but johnson says that is a safe maneuver. >> the switching out here happens all the time. that is not uncommon at all. >> reporter: crews are to get the affected cars out of the way and fix the tracks. all day train service has been suspended east of pleasant hill. >> we have eight buses that are forming a bus bridge and taking passengers between pleasant hill and pittsburg-bay point and making stops in between. >> reporter: just minutes ago i talked to b.a.r.t.

officials again and they told me they expect this to be cleaned up by morning. if it's not, there will be a bus bridge from the concord station to the pleasant hill station. live in concord, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. now to the unfolding disaster in northern japan. since we began to report on the massive earthquake and tsunami on thursday's 10:00 news the scale of the tragedy has been clearer by the hour. the power of the tsunami alone, check out these incredible pictures, is shown in this new video. about 1600 people are known dead with some officials estimating as many as 10,000 may have died. two nuclear reactors face a partial meltdown and are leaking radiation while four other reactors have suffered major damage. 2 million homes are without power and 1.4 million customers are without water. and all of this has rain and snow moves into the region hit hardest by the disaster.

while the scale of the human tragedy is staggering, concerns over the six nuclear reactors damaged in the quake are riveting the world's attention. japannese engineers are working feverishly to cool down the reactors' cool, but two are atrich of a partial meltdown, which has implications far beyond japan. >> fuel rods fused together, the temperatures get so hot they melt together in eye radioactive molten mass that bursts and could carry to the atmosphere in the united states. >> the international atomic energy agency rates the current darnel at a 4 on a scale of 1-8 with a 7 equal to the chernobyl disaster and a 5 equal to the three mile island accident. daniel to the nuclear plants in japan is raising questions and concerns about similar plants here in the u.s. connecticut senator joe lieberman has advocated for the construction of new nuclear

cruz harbor was just beyond this bridge where it builds pressure and widens ago. that is where 26 sunken or damaged boats were hit. jonathan peck says his boat was moved in time to avoid damage to his vessel. >> i saw the video of what happened down there and i am very surprised and very happy we moved our boat. >> reporter: more good news, lucy the goose, who locals say live in the harbor for more than 25 years survived ordeal just fine. live in santa cruz, jim vargas, ktvu, channel 2 news. the national weather service says the website created to warn americans about the tsunami danger was not up to the job. the west coast and alaska tsunami warning websites slowed to a crawl on friday when tens of thousands of people tried to get up-to-date information. they warned that a $124 million in budget cuts proposed by

congress could cripple the weather service's ability to coordinate the complex system of ocean buoys and satellites that provide tsunami information. the japanese stock market in tokyo opened moments ago and the nikkei index has already fallen. the quake hit minutes before the market closed on friday, causing the exchange to lois one per share of its value in a few minutes of trading. banks are expected to pour millions to prevent massive losses in the stock market. fundraising efforts are well underway to help those suffering in japan. as ktvu's allie rasmus explains. >> friday's massive earthquake and tsunami and the many aftershocks are constantly in your heads right now. >> reporter: helping the victims of that disaster was the message before sunday morning prayers at the

congregational church in el cerrito. a major of the church's members have family ties to japan. >> when we see the devastating images we feel so helpless. not being able to go and put sandbags or give a cup of coffee, it's one way to connect. >> reporter: across the bay in san francisco's japan town, a group of community leaders plan to meet together tomorrow morning. they are going to coordinate their fundraising efforts for the earthquake victims. >> because it happened just before the weekend, we haven't been able to gather as a group, as a community to decide what we're going to do in future. so tomorrow we'll get together and discuss what plans we're going to have. >> reporter: the meetings organized by the japanese cultural community center of northern california and san francisco are already accepting donations for relief aid. she says she is looking forward to looking forward to what the community plans while she continues to wait for word on her family's safety. >> my sister is in sendai and

lawmakers say they are shifting their energy towards recall efforts saying that some of those republican lawmakers. the sonoma valley museum of art is offering a $5,000 reward for missing sculpture as apparently stolen. five sculptures disappeared sometime during an exhibition that ended february 6th. police believe someone may have just put them in their backpack. security improvements are being made at the museum in sonoma. the sculptures are worth about $40,000. a new report by the san francisco chamber of commerce suggests fighting homelessness is the top priority for city voters. now the 500 registers voters suffer have ad 3, 2% say they see homelessness as the most pressing issue facing the city. that was followed by jobs and the economy. the city budget, education and then muni. last year, the economy topped that list. coming up on ktvu, channel 2 news at 5:00, rebels continue to lose ground in libya as pro-

the forces of muammar gaddafi. government troops have recaptured two oil port and are pressing east to take back the rebel center of benghazi. nic robertson reports from the battle ground. >> reporter: drive east, mile upon mile of rocketed vehicles, discarded rockets and ammission littering the roadside, evidence of a rapid rebel rea treat, outgunned and outsmarted from government forces advancing from the west. the first stop on this government-organized trip, this is the police station and it's not clear exactly what happened here. it's the first signs of any real battle that we have seen. we have been driving on the highway, coming along from the west, we have seen occasionally checkpoints manned by sometime a dozen or more soldiers or

dense, black smoke. as we get closer, unmistakably clear, an oil tanker burning out of control. officials blaming it on rebels. exactly how far government forces have advanced beyond the oil fire, exactly where the frontline is, remains unclear, but what is clear is that the government is on a roll, and the rebels are recoiling, retreating it seems, almost as fast as they can. in other news of the world tonight a crack doub on student protesters in yemen killed one and injured at least 100 people. it was chaos in the streets near sana'a university. fights between out between pro and anti-government demonstrators. today's violence came after multiple attacks yesterday that killed seven protesters around

wave devouring the coast. this is your house? this man managed to drive out just in time, but says his neighbors weren't so lucky. this is the scene of complete and utter devastation. the power of the tsunami it just speaks for itself. the wall of water that roared through here in seconds clerked everything in its path and from the rescue workers we have spoken to, the bodies that they are retrieving are those of the elderly people who could not get out in time. now for the survivors who are returning to see what is left of their homes, when you stand here and witness the devastation, you have to wonder where these people start to rebuild their lives? anna coren, ishinomaki. >> the japannese stock market began to immediately fall after markets opened in tokyo about half an hour ago. the first day of trading since the massive earthquake. in the last few minutes the

average price in san francisco is now just over $4 a gallon and keep in mind that is the average price. that is up $0.06 from a week ago. a gallon of regular is running $3.96 in oakland and $3.98 in san jose. if you are looking to save a couple of cents at the pump or a couple of dollars, aaa has tips, including avoiding making quick stops and starts. drive at a more casual speed and clean out your car, because carrying less weight saves gas. look for lower places, but don't burn up more than you say. it's not worth it to drive across town for a few cents. tuesday is the deadline for california school districts to send out layoff notices to their staff. here there is the bay area hundreds of teachers are expected to be notified that they could lose their jobs. the oakland school district is expected to mail more than 500 layoff notices while 180 jobs could be on the line at the

cash-strapped mount diablo unified school district. state laws requires schools to give out the notices by march 15th. the ongoing budget crisis made survival tough for many art programs. >> reporter: on the waul of this gallery, organizers say you can get a glimpse of the work. there are 208 works of art from kindergarten-aged kids through middle school and an exhibit that hasn't been seen here in eight years. the reality of budget cuts has been tough for school programs everywhere. the non-profit group here is not immune, their funding cut almost in half, but district court says the talent on the walls shows us just how much is at stake. >> the schools are under a lot of pressure for testing and they are under financial strain as well. so the money is not there.

. . heavy rains and overflowing rivers have please, go ahead parts of northern new jersey. julie banderas shows us the soggy mess. >> reporter: a state of emergency remains here in little falls, new jersey, one of the hardest hit areas in northern new jersey, inundated by floodwaters. residents were told to get out and many spent last night with no heat no, hot water and in this case, for this homeowner as you sea the car in their front driveway, they didn't quette out in time. in paterson, some 1500 residents have to be evacuated today. the mayor saying six fire departments rescue boats will be available to help, if

needed. five of seven bridges across the river in the northwestern part of the city are closed and numerous roads are flooded. the river is expected to drop to 10.2 and it rose to just under 12' and that means residents are urged to find temporary housing either with family or friends or at one of the area shelters. again, the flood stage is above 4' above flood stage and that means it could be up until maybe wednesday before residents are allowed back into this area and as you see me walking through the street with strong currents, evacuees are told don't come back until it's absolutely safe and right now, this is not a place to be living. electricity completely shut off for these pel when will eventually returned to water- logged basements and quite a mess. in new jersey, julie banderas. >> it's been some times we have seen pictures like that in the bay area, but it's raining

out there. let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo. >> right now you can see with all the yellows and reds, this is moving to the south and east in this fashion and the overall check here is that you can see this approaching livermore. across the bay for oakland and into richmond, and in fact, we'll come in really tight to show you the roadways being impacted around the richmond area. the yellows and reds beginning to move out of town. as we widen out the perspective, there is the activity from daly city. heavy downpours towards the embarcadero and moving across the bay and across the bay bridge towards emeryville and oakland. is this is pretty much a widespread area of heavy rainfall. those yellows and reds showing up for emeryville and for the
