it was a soggy ending to another bay area winter as a powerful storm moved through last flight with winds strong enough to bring down trees. >> reporter: you talked act the trees this is one of them. you can see this tree came down and left this giant crater in the driveway of this house. you can see a little bit of pipe. that is part of the gas line to this home and that gas line and that break prompted a three hour evacuation in this neighborhood. this morning crews from berkeley started clearing this pine tree that came crashing down at about 10:40 last night, noah lives just across the street. >> we were watching the tv. we thought it was thunder but we didn't see lightning. my daughter said some tree landed on us. >> reporter: tree pulled the

gas line out of the meter sending a cloud into the neighborhood. >> then the police came and knocking on the door and saying that people have to evacuate gas leak is there. >> reporter: g era rd's mother lives in this home and despite the gas leak and damage she is all right. >> she is doing fine. she staying with us. she is in the house but shaken up. >> reporter: neighbors including wendy who works for pg&e stopped by to seat damage for themselves. >> my guess is what we did is -- jackhammered this open and turned the valve off to turn off the gas. >> reporter: crews have had a busy day. in oakland this tree game down at about midnight. it didn't pull down the power lines but left three cars trapped. >> we got up this morning and wanted to help the neighbors get the cars out. this is -- a lot of these are dropping right now. >> reporter: back here live in

berkeley this pine tree is still blocking the avenue. crew also have to come back tomorrow with heavy equipment to get it out of the way and clean up continues throughout the bay area. we are live in berkeley, ktvu channel 2news. >> the highway patrol said one person was killed after a tree fell on top of a car in american canyon. it happened last night before 10:30 on north kelley road. investigators say the tree pinned the driver inside the car. the identity of the victim hasn't been released. >> workers cleaning up from the storm on the penninsula. how people are trying to get around the downed trees. >> reporter: drivers had to take a detour. >> it'll be a couple more minutes. thank you. >> reporter: rain and strong winds toppled this tree off king's mountain road in wood side. >> i grew up in this area and is this par for the course. >> reporter: sarah was trying

to take their daughter to see grandpa but had to wait in line with the others. >> you. >> reporter: the chp shut down the road for an hour and a half. >> a lot of trees and old growth. >> reporter: robert was lucky to catch the tail end of it. >> if it's only going to be about 20 minutes it's not that bad. >> reporter: others weren't so patient. public works crews tackled another tree down the road threatening to snap power lines. >> power is fine and the telephone is fine. we have to break the wires out. >> reporter: rain slicked roads and free cries created poor driving conditions. the water is at least a foot deep. we have spot flooding off 101 southbound at 380 split. cars are slowing down in order to avoid hydroplaning, others haven't been so lucky like the car you see -- that woman just smashed in to wall.

crews expect to spend most of the day cleaning up but damage be they say isn't as bad as years past. t. >> tonight those in charge of overseeing operations at the airport say things are running relatively smoothly despite the day of rain showers. san francisco airport officials say there are delays of 30 minutes because of clouds and wind and arrivals are on departure. oakland airport officials say they are looking at a handful of delays some of them up to an hour. there are weather related problems in southern california and both san jose airport and san francisco airport have said they have had cancellations on flights to and from bur bank. >> wind gusts between 60 and 70 swept through san francisco last night leaving a trail of debris behind. some of the damage there. >> reporter: this 25-foot long piece of metal used to be a sign on top of the old virginia

hotel. strong winds ripped the sign from its cables margaret and her husband were in the motel next door. >> i said what was that? >> reporter: it happened around 10:30 last night just a block from busy union square. this morning people walking by were amazed nobody was hurt. >> thank goodness there was no loss of life. >> reporter: from hotel signs to 30-foot tree branches the weather caused problems throughout the city last night. >> we received about 75 calls of trees branches. >> reporter: the department of public works removed trees and documented the damage. >> you could hear the wind and hear the -- it sounded like it was really blowing hard. >> reporter: later in the afternoon the storm showers turned on and off in san francisco. at time itself rained over golden gate park and minutes later the sun would shine.

>> lightning, thunder, which is rare. i have people down south and they are used to it but here they aren't. >> reporter: the first day of spring made a strange entrance after a weekend of weird bay area weather. in san francisco, ktvu channel 2news. >> the core of the system moved through this morning but lingering showers. you need the sun glasses and then the umbrella because of downpours pushing through the bay area. right now, this happens to be the loop over the past two hours. you get the idea of the activity focusing in the south bay and in the east bay. here is the latest and we will come in tighter, closer to livermore and danville and the yellows correspond to heavier cells and showers. we could have a few isolated storms. move the maps up to the north and tracking more activity

closer to danville, clayton and pittsburgh as well and around antioch with the darker shades of green. at least moderate rainfall there. is the bigger perspective with the focus at least right now in parts of the east bay. you can see the area of low pressure, we will put it in motion and there is that tight circulation moving in to the central portions of the state. fairfield 52 miles an hour, angel island 58, sfo53 and most of the gusts about 12 and 2:00 earlier this morning. as far as rainfall impressive in the north bay with santa rosa over an inch of rain and san jose .91. the focus of the system in the santa cruz mountains, over two inches of rain. coming up we will highlight the shower chances for tomorrow and the times of another significant storm, yes another one, we will have that times. >> thank you. the strong storm brought more

snow to the sierra triggers heavy traffic and road closures. this is video of blue canyon, portions of interstate 80 are closed because of almost no visibility. both link sacramento to lake tahoe. highway 50 is open but chains are required. more than 3 feet of new snow was reported just this morning in the sierra. >> now to the latest in libya the pentagon said the no fly zone is in place. a second night of fire observed was seen in tripoli. the pentagon said they have inflicted more damage on the air defense systems. the military said the strikes have been effective and the pentagon is waiting to see if the latest promise of a cease fire happens. gadhafi remains defiant.

we will not die, you will die. >> reporter: they say dozens have been killed, mostly civilians. the pentagon said precautions being done to avoid nonmilitary areas and said it has soon no reports of significant civilian deaths. i'm barbara hall. >> from libya now to the crisis in japan. crews continue their efforts tonight to cooldown several crippled nuclear reactors. this as that country faces a new issue, higher than normal raidation levels found in water, spinach and milk. officials today said not to drink tap water to one village after raidation was detected. david pipe certify in tokoyo. >> teams still struggling to cooldown the reactors, act 150

miles northeast of year in the capitol. the main focus is to restore power and cooling system there is which were knocked out by the tsunami over a week ago. tokoyo said power has been restored to two of the units now but still not clear if the cooling systems will work. fire trucks continue to pump water over the reactors still in danger of over heating. a nuclear safety official has warned pressure levels have been changing at the plant's number three reactor which is the only unit in the plant. the power company has warned the spraying of water on that unit may not be cooling it. the operator has backed away now from a plan to vent gas from that reactor over concerns it could put more raidation into the atmosphere. the top spokesman has said the nuclear plant must eventually be scrapped. raidation has been detected in

the food chain here. spinach and milk from as far as 75-miles from the plant has shown levels of raidation in excess of safety limits. officials say though it poses no immediate health risk. the official death toll from the quake and tsunami has jumped to over 8,000 with another 12,000 missing. in tokoyo david piper fox news. >> report that raidation is being detected in food shipped out of japan. tawian said they found trace amounts in fava beans. this is the first case of raidation being found in exports since the nuclear crisis started last week. the raidation had been detected in spinach and milk some say they aren't worried. >> i think we need to monitor it but i'm not going to stop eating vegetables. >> the tainted milk was found 20 miles the plant and the spinach from six farm was in 75-

miles. donations for the survivors of the quake and tsunami are coming in from across the bay area. today center health is donating a half million dollars to the red cross to help in the relief effort. the red cross has sent more than $10 million with millions more planned in the coming days. the ace hardware store has raised ten thousand dollars for relief efforts since the store launched a donation drive a week ago. the store hopes to raise $25,000 from the community which will then be matched by the owners for a total of $50,000. if you want to make a donation you can visit our website ktvu.com and click on the japan quake tab for details. >> the governor declared today a day of remembering for victims. the governor's office released the order acknowledging the special relationship between california and japan and the courage of the people there. he asked california to keep the

someone else. >> reporter: gena didn't meet the family but felt the need to help. >> very four children of my own and i know as a mom i would desperately want somebody to do the same for me. >> reporter: at any given time we are told there are 10,000 people on the waiting list in the united states for a transplant and if you would like to register for that transplant list you can go to the website and look for the link to be the match. . jim vargas. >> there was a new report of a second problem on the pipeline that ruptured in san bruno. the chronicle reports back in september pg&e inspectors found a flawed seam weld just a few hundred feet from the one that failed and is suspected of causing the explosion. the blast and fire killed eight and destroyed 38 homes. we were unable to reach pg&e

for comment today. oversized big rig to blame for bringing down a power line in south san francisco this morning. it happened on south airport boulevard between mitchell and utah. police say the truck snagged a power line that stretched across the street causing the power pole to snap. nobody was hurt, pg&e cut off power in that area while they cleaned up. >> a teen girl in critical after a deadly car crash in antioch ; antioch police say a 19-year-old was killed when a car overturned after slamming into a retaining wall around 11:30. a 16-year-old is in critical condition, another girl and two 18-year-old men were also injuried in the crash. the cause of the crash is under investigation. san francisco police looking for a hit and run driver who smashed up seven vehicles in the castro district. viewers sent us these vehicles showing us the damage to the

pickup truck just before midnight. the driver kept up the derby before wrecking his own truck and then fleeing on truck. nobody was hurt. >> san francisco police investigating an early morning shooting at a nightclub. paramedics first responded on the 2400 block -- just after two. they found a man and woman suffering from gun shot wounds and rushed them to the hospital. no word on arrests in this case. the red cross is helping a family tonight left homeless by a two alarm fire in san francisco's twin peaks neighborhood. the fire broke out just before 2:00 a.m. on panorama drive. everybody in that home escaped harm. high winds fed the flames damaging a home next door there. is no word on what caused the fire. >> coming up as the world watches japan many countries concerned about their own

an attempted kidnapping. a registered sex offender set to appear in court after trying to run off allegedly with a little girl. it happened at a metro rail station. it was caught on a boarding platform. the man in the white shirt walks behind the little girl before grabbing her from behind. ten people came to her rescue and tackled the man to the ground. the man tried to flee but police managed to arrest him. he was booked for attempted kidnapping and is being held on $100,000 bail. >> jury selection and opening statements expected to get underway tomorrow as barry bonds heads to federal court for his perjury trial. we spoke to the jury about both side's strategy. >> reporter: almost eight years after the scandal started barry bonds is finally up to bats he faces off against prosecutors in his trial. the trial isn't about if he took steriods but if he lied

maybe just a little humble. >> reporter: there is a lot at stake, a conviction could mean probation or even time in jail. ktvu channel 2news. >> a contentionous republican party convention in sacramento reached a compromise today on picking future candidates. the debate centered on how to pick official nominees following the passing of proposition 14. beginning in 2014 the top two candidates in a primary race will advance to the general election regardless of party. to ensure the continuing influence some delegates wanted to let committees pick the official preprimary nominee. instead they agreed to let republicans vote by mail to pick them. a san jose man attending the party convention died last night at a party dance. the 64-year-old suffer aid heart attack. he ran for congress in 2002 and ran three times for the

presidenty of the taxpayer's association. >> lawmakers returned to sacramento tomorrow to take up some of the most contentionous issues of the governor's proposed budget. legislators have already passed several bills to cut 14 bill dollars from the budget. this week they will take up a bill to eliminate some agencies. the biggest challenge will be getting a handful of republicans to vote for a measure to put $11 billion of tax extensions before voters on the june ballot. some marin employees may soon face layoffs and cut backs. the county wants to cut spending by six million dollars. there could be as many as two dozen layoffs at the civic center had summer. supervisors are expected to review that tomorrow. >> gas prices continue to rise across the united states with prices getting closer or passing the 4-dollar mark. a gallon jumped by seven cents

. concerns about the weather kept many from enjoying san francisco's first sunday streets event of the year. it was closed to traffic today,

the monthly street closures are popular with families and others eager to take a walk, run or bike, ride down major streets, the next event takes place on april 10th along the greet highway off ocean beach. everybody hoping for no rain. >> dry pavement but probably won't stay. >> that's right. at least more of the variety of breaks in the clouds and with that you can get outside and -- heavy rain. welcome the spring it started this afternoon at 4:21, just a little over an hour ago and still a few spring showers on the radar. here you can pick out the action. not a lot of coverage but still some action to show new parts of the south bay and also parts of the east bay as well. the darker shades of green, around 8:80, we will be tracking wet streets in this area. at least in the short term. moving the maps up to the north you can see around, outside of

concord, around livermore just to the south and east of livermore looking like activity, this is mostly going to the north and east. this will be the track with the showers at least over the next one to two hours. overall weather story is this, we will hold on to the clouds and the chance of showers out there, tomorrow sun cloud mix, tomorrow is not a wash out but still off and on showers and then the extended, more storms, we will try to time them. gusty winds, another factor especially into midweek. first thing tomorrow morning with the scattered showers out there across the area. nothing major but still you may encounter -- the rain drops. pretty chilly, santa rosa 39, san jose lower 40s at 43 degrees. here is the system moving across the bay area late last night into early this morning. we will still have an unstable air mass and will have to hold on to the chance of showers for tonight into tomorrow and still can't rule out the possibility of isolated thunderstorm.

we have more development upstream and that will be the source of our next storm as we do approach especially by morning and also into thursday. for tomorrow, scattered showers, still plenty of breaks in the afternoon. clouds, sun, then you might have a passing shower move on through. as we take this into tuesday another system approaching the coastline and with that we will increase the shower chances again, especially by tuesday afternoon, late tuesday afternoon into tuesday evening. maybe just spring manies first thing tuesday and wind speeds pick up again in advance of its system out of the south from around 20 to 30 miles an hour. here is the forecast model. this model showing you the increase in the coverage for this evening. at 9:00 and we could have the isolated thunderstorm, maybe the same story at midnight. we will continue to put this into motion and you will see just spotty showers tomorrow morning at 7:00 and then by 12:00 not a lot to show you but we could be tracking more, at
