welcome to monday march 21st i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. let's get a lack at the weather. rosemary is in for steve paulson this morning. >> reporter: it just doesn't stop. we have scattered showers for today. this is what we are waking up with. parking lotly and mostly cloudy sky -- partly and mostly cloudy skies out there. san jose right around mountain view. los gatos seeing a little bit of light rain. and up over the peninsula from half-moon bay. gets ready to slide up over oakland. some of this meaning not all of it hitting the ground but scattered showers still in the forecast. waking up cooler than yesterday. we will show you what you can expect temperature wise. good morning, sal. good morning, rosemary. also the morning commute is going to be okay on the bridge. we have turned the camera that

way because there was word of an accident near treasure island. the barry bonds perjury trial starts today in san francisco. ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is in the city this morning with more on this case. eight years in the making now. allie. >> reporter: this federal building behind me is where the trial will take place. we could start seeing potential jurors in the case entering the building. jury selection for the barry bonds trial is the first thing that will happen this morning. the former giants baseball star is accused of perjury lying under oath whether he used steroids in his nearly 15 yearlong career. the trial starts nearly eight years after bonds legal troubles began. back in 2003 is when he first denied under oath ever knowingly using steroids. four years after that he was indicted for lying under oath.

earlier this year bonds' attorneys felt confident that he would be acquitted and he would not accept a plea deal. >> mr. bonds will not plead guilty to anything? >> well, mr. bonds will decide what mr. bonds does. but i believe as i have told you from day one we will have a trial. >> reporter: right now you are looking at video from the inside of the courtroom where this trial will happen. it's on the 19th floor of the federal building. 15 perspective jurors will with in the building this morning. that selection process is supposed to be open to the media and the public. we will be able to listen in and hear what types of questions attorneys for both sides ask the perspective jurors. we are told if there is time, opening statements in this case could start this afternoon. in san francisco allie rasmus. also the trial of the two men charged in the murder of

journalist chauncey bailey starts today. he's accused of hiring the gunman that killed the reporter. he's accused of helping track down bailey the day he was killed. convicted gunman broussard is expected to testify in the trial. two men are in jail this morning. they are accused of trying to break into a costco store. it happened yesterday afternoon at the costco on monument boulevard. it ended a couple miles away on gill court. the two suspects tried to run away but they were captured. we have breaking news from libya this morning. four new york times journalist that have been held in libya have been freed. turkey says they have handled

their release. the four journalist were captured in the eastern part of libya last week. libya had a originally said they were going to release them last friday. an evacuation order remains in place in japan. earlier this month, the workers were told to leave after smoke started rising from one of the reactors. now that could be a sign the reactor is overheating. on saturday a sudden surge of pressure almost triggered the release of radio active blast. we are getting a look at a rescue of two people. we told you about the rescue of an 80-year-old woman and her teenage grandson. he was able to pull himself out of a flattened home and call out to help. he lead rescuers inside to his grandmother. they had been surviving on the

food they had in their refrigerator. more than $26 million in damage was done to the santa cruz harbor more than a week ago. jade hernandez is live. i know they are still cleaning up. >> reporter: good morning, dave. you are right. you can still see one of the damaged boats and pulled to harbor right there in that parking lot this morning. preparation is now part of the solution. a meeting tonight hopes to answer questions about what to do next time. about what to do next time when a tsunami surge hits the water. part of the santa cruz harbor reopened to boat water this morning. half of the north harbor and m dock remain closed. more than a dozen boat owners

lost their boats. eight boats privately owned have been recovered. every day the harbor is closed it loses an estimated $206,000 in santa cruz economy. still really quite this morning though in south harbor. after the mealing tonight the tsunami ready program of santa cruz will discuss the surge that cause the recent damage. the gathering will take place at the santa cruz police department tonight at 7:00 p.m.. we are live in santa cruz mismorning. we will continue to bring you the latest. as soon as some of the owners start to get back here some of the pieces we will bring you that. reporting live jade hernandez. our time is 6:07. the last big winter storm of the year blew through the bay area this weekend. that left repair crews with a

lot of cleaning up on the first day of spring. this is big. this is berkeley. city workers tried to clear a 120-foot pine tree. it crashed down and sent a gas cloud into the air. pg&e employee wendy pulling was one of those evacuated. >> mimeses is what we did -- my guess is what we did was jackhammered this opened and turned the valve off. >> police are saying no one was hurt. that gas leak was quickly controlled. pg&e crews were also out in oakland clearing another tree. didn't take down any power lines but three cars were trapped by that three. stormy weather is being blamed for power outages across

the bay area leaving more than 4,000 pg&e customers still in the dark. here are the latest numbers in the north bay 3700 customers are effected. in the east bay it's less than 700 customers. in the south bay only about 40 customers. on the peninsula 20 customers without power. good news in san francisco no problems reported. pull power may not be restored until noon. flights out of bay area airports ared to -- are expected to be fine. yesterday heavy rain and strong winds caused consolations -- cancellations and delays to the los angeles area. we are out at san jose airport trying to talk to people. >> i got an e-mail from my mom that due to winds there is water in the valley.

[ laughter ] she was right. >> mom is always right. flights came in late last night to help them get back on track this morning. travelers are still being advised to check with their carriers before you head out to the airport. you can always find the latest weather conditions and live storm tracker two. smart idea. time now 6:10. sal has been telling us about crashes and stuff. >> we had a crash on the bay bridge which was moved out of the lane. in fact, we will look at the commutes coming into san francisco and the commute direction that is the bay bridge direction of course. let's take a look at what we have now. police are still on scene investigating a car chase involving a stolen car. this began when two officers

started chasing the stolen car in their patrol car. it ended up crashing and three suspects got out and started to run away. the officers followed them but somehow got injured themselves during this chase. again, this is a good area to avoid in san francisco's bay view district. let's go out to live pictures. we did have an accident on the bay bridge and that crash has been removed from the lanes. the traffic is beginning to get busy here any way. moving along and taking a look at 880 oakland north and southbound. that traffic moves well in both directions. this mornings commute on northbound 101 getting up to the airport it's a nice drive so far. at 6:11 filling in for steve is rosemary. >> thank you, sal. an hour to the sunrise. the scattered showers. they wouldn't leave us. we have light rain falling in some of the areas. this has been the case for the

lost hair or so. a lot of this not hitting the ground. livermore pleasanton and danville seeing a few sprinkles and and off. daily city is a moderate city. you can see wide spread gray out there. this is a lot coaler than what we saw yesterday. you can see our satellite radar pattern showing you the scattered showers not going to go away. let me run you through your forecast here. here we are monday morning picking it up at 8:00. san jose may be a few sprinkles. we will be mostly dry through the evening hours. it will be short lived. we have another storm approaching the coast.

enjoy what we have while we have it because the clouds will be back and today we are still going to be dealing with a few scattered showers. even the possibility of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. wide spread mid to upper 50s. 56 expected in santa rosa. 57 in concord as well as hayward. 57 san mateo as well as redwood city. and upper 50s for san jose as well as morgan hill. your extended forecast a wet week ahead. take a look at what is going on here. we have scattered showers in the forecast for today. slight chance come tomorrow morning. the better chance will roll in by the evening hours. the next storm could bring wind along with it. rain likely on wednesday. on the heels of this next storm another to follow. we have rain and showers in the forecast for thursday and friday. the weekend looks to be soggy. we may get a break on saturday. just a slight chance at this point for a little bit of rain there. it will return on sunday. meanwhile our temperatures normally this time of year in

well after a weekend of air attacks, the pentagon is saying the united nations coalition has succeeded in scattering followers of gadhafi. now they are gathering in airports and standing as human shields against the air strikes. back here at home at obama administration is facing tough criticism over the handling of the conflict. alison burns is in our newsroom after new details. alison. >> reporter: pam, president obama continues his south america trip today in chile. his aids insist he is capable of dealing with the situation in libya while engaging in talks in south america. over the weekend the u.s. took the lead of launching attacks in libya including this one at moammar gadhafi's compound.

the u.s. will soon play more of a backup role in the international effort to protect libyan civilians. back in washington a number of democrats and republicans are speaking out saying they are confused about the u.s. role and the goal of the mission. >> we have not discovered who it is in libya we are trying to support. obviously the people that are against gadhafi but who? >> reporter: as for whether gadhafi will stay in power, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff mike mullen said in several television interviews yesterday it's uncertain how the operation will end and it's a possibility that gadhafi will survive it politically. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. time now 6:18. pg&e is scrambling now to create an opt out plan for their controversial smart meter program. the california puc set a deadline of thursday after several bay area communities

had moratoriums on the metering. they insist smart meters are safe and plan on continuing the program. the santa clara city council will vote tonight to give $4.5 million to the san francisco 49ers. the money would be used to help build a new football stadium in santa clara. city leaders say giving money to the private group like 49ers will better protect the money from the state. time now 6:19. sal, many sal alerts out there? >> not yet. thank you. i'm happy not to give them. good morning, to you on this monday. we're morning. highway 24 looks good now. last week we had a lot of bad

days there. today since the rain is not moving through for the morning commute any way, it will billion much bet -- it will be much better. this will not be a dry week. this is a look at the commute here on 80. we're getting more of a backup at the toll plaza. nothing major but the literring lights are on. the more you wait the bigger it will become. unless we have a lighter than usual day. and the morning drive on the peninsula looks good. let's move this across the bay to the livermore valley. a little bit slow on the allotment pass. in the south bay we don't have a lot going upright now. in terms of crashes and stalled vehicles. 6:20 let's go back to rosemary. thank you very much. toss that raincoat in the trunk you will need it off and on

through the week ahead. we are looking at lingering showers in san jose. mostly cloudy skies and a few sprinkles. scattered showers in the forecast for your morning hours. lingering showers in the afternoon. we could see breaks of sunshine. that could bring on the possibility of a thunderstorm as well. our extended forecast looks pretty active. taking a look at your current conditions right now. a chilly start in santa rosa. 49 san francisco. oakland sitting at 50 degrees right now. for today again a shower or two. we should start to see mainly dry weather but it will be temporary. by tuesday night the rain is back. the wind expected to join it.

now the gop leader is urging governor brown to follow the lead of his east coast counterpart. >> when new york can do the responsible thing and cut the state payroll, cap the pension and say it won't hurt the classroom jerry brown can do the same thing here. >> he is opposed to a june special election that asks voters to vote on tax extensions. san jose republican activist doug mcnea suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the dance floor saturday night. bystanders used a defibrillator to try perform cpr but he died at the hospital. he ran for state assembly last year. he ran for congress in 2002. mcnea was also active in the taxpayers association. well this morning chain restrictions are still in place for the sierra on both highway

welcome back to the morning news. we are look live at the traders on the new york stock exchange. it looks like a little bit of buying after last weeks sell off. a deal announced between at & t and t-mobile the u.s. part of t- mobile. so look at the bottom part of your screen. it's already up 75 points. changing as we speak. it looks like a pretty good day. >> we will smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here on the ktvu channel 2 morning news i'm dave clark. >> an i'm -- and i'm pam cook. >> in two hours the barry bonds perjury trial will begin in san francisco. allie rasmus is live out there right now to tell us what we can expect today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. jury selection is the first thing that will happen for the first day of the barry bonds

perjury trial. it will happen in this federal building behind us. you can see outside they are already starting to prepare for what they are probably expecting to be large crowds and lo of the media gathered out here. you can see the metal gates. those will go up to clear a path for barry bonds and his attorneys and some of the big players in this case to enter the courthouse unobstructed. this trial starts eight years after bonds legal troubles began. he gave that testimony as part of a federal information into the use of steroids in major league baseball. four years after that he was indicted for lying under oath. bonds is not expected to testify in this case. he is expected however to come in to watch the proceedings today. jury experts say it could be tough for the government to make its case to jurors that

perjury is a serious offense. >> this is something that routinely prosecutors have to deal with is illustrating for the jury that yes even though the subject of the lies might seem trivial to you, the fact of the lies in the justice system is anything but trivial and here is why. >> reporter: right now you are looking at the inside of the courtroom that we mentioned on the 19th floor of the federal building in san francisco where this trial will get started a few hours from now. this morning about 50 perspective jurors will be in the courtroom for that jury selection process. last week some of the jurors filled out questionnaires. it was designed to give attorneys on both sides an idea about potential jurors beliefs and opinion about barry bonds and baseball. the selection process is expected to be open to the media. we will be able to listen in and hear some of the questions that are asking. if that jury selection process goes quickly if there is time for opening statements in this

trial could begin as early as this afternoon. santa cruz is still recovering from the tsunami serge this morning. jade hernandez is live in the harbor. now there is talk of rethinking how the harbor is built. jade. >> reporter: it's a very quiet harbor this morning. i can tell you the near dead silence is a reminder of what happened here more than a week ago. what to do next? preparation is part of the solution. a meeting tonight hopes to answer questions about what to do next time a tsunami surge hits the harbor. part of the santa cruz harbor reopened to traffic for a little bit. the harbor was closed for a week after the tsunami surge that caught everyone off guard. you are looking at cell phone video that caught most of that

surge. more than a dozen boat owners lost their boats. hundreds more damaged. creating more than $26 million in damage. that is three-times more than the ports budget. so far eight boats privately owned have been recovered. every day they are closed they lose $206,000 in the santa cruz economy. locals are worried about the start of reck nation salmon season. next to cleanup is to get prepared which brings us back to the meeting tonight. they will discuss the surge which caused the recent damage. the meeting will be lead by a geophysicist. for anyone wanting to attend it will be held at the santa cruz police department tonight. reporting live jade hernandez. time now 6:35. a california senate committee will be holding a hearing today

about japan's quake and tsunami. it's part of tsunami awareness and preparedness week. it will focus on the safety of california's nuclear power plants and the natural gas pipelines. representatives will be testifying along with nuclear safety experts. the pacific northwest could soon be dealing with their own earthquake aftermath. according to retired geologist a quake between a magnitude of 3.5 and 6.5 will hit the area by the end of the week. he says the full moon and high tides are a tall tale sign. he says he was suspended from his job because he predicted at 1989 quake.

we understand there is a crash at the bay bridge? >> yeah. it has been there for eight minutes or so. they are moving it. you can see how quickly it backed up. the last time we saw this it was only backed up a little bit. the bridge crew got out there very quickly and moved all the cars out of the way. they are still there but they are not in the lanes. traffic will be busy approaching the bay bridge. this is one of the days it went from being good to pretty bad. moving along and taking a look at 880 so far it looks okay north and southbound approaching the coliseum. in the south bay traffic is moving along pretty well. traffic on highway 4 is getting along pretty good. to at to that delay we have rain falling. we have 35 minutes before the

sunrises. we enjoy it by the evening hours as we get that extra hour of sun. let's take a look at where we are watching them closer this morning as we move through the day the lingering showers they will stick around. daly city south san francisco moderate rain falling at the moment. as we slide into areas redwood city and a few sprinkles falling on your windshield as you head out the door. most of the rain falling south of us. areas right around monterey and south of that. dublin a little bit of light rain this morning. san leandro and we are going to again continue with just the light scattered showers. we do remain with an unsettled pattern as we move through the first week of spring. scattered showers in store for today. we will see a bit of sunshine. we will be slightly warmer in the afternoon. the bit of sunshine and the warmer conditions here at the surface could bring on

thunderstorms. by tuesday clouds begin to increase and that chance for showers will increase as well. so when do we dry out? we will be mainly dry. not 100%. but mainly dry by this evening. satellite and radar showing this trough that hangs over california and the next storm continuing on in fact the week ahead we have a number of storms that will roll through the area. we will show you that in a moment. this morning with a little bit of clearing out there. colder than where we were yesterday morning. take a look at santa rosa 37 degrees. a chilly start. 38 in napa. fairfield and concord. 37 in hayward. the on and off showers will not let off. they should taper off by the end of the afternoon. 57 for oakland. 57 fremont. 58 san jose. mid 50s for areas along the

bay. could be breezy in the afternoon especially along the coast. winds 15-20 miles an hour in come -- in some cases. we have storms rolling through tuesday night lingering until wednesday. we could see havering through the -- we could see heavy rain through the morning hours of friday. saturday through the morning hours we could be dry. we have another storm approaching. it looks like saturday eve nick into sunday. keeping in mind we are below average for this time of year. typically in the 60s. we will need your jacket. temperatures ranging in the mid to upper 50s. >> all right thank you. we know the name of a pedestrian killed in a hit and run crash in san francisco. 51-year-old david henderson was found in the street near the intersection of market and eighth street saturday night. he was pronounced dead there at the scene. so far police have not

identified any suspects or vehicles in the case. if you have any information call the san francisco police. san francisco police are still searching for the hit and run driver that smashed up seven vehicles in the castro. a ktvu viewer took these pictures showing the damage to a pickup truck in the 200 block of dolores street. the driver kept up this demolition derby before crashing his own truck into a cargo van and running off. no one was hurt. worries this morning over an oily substance washing up on the louisiana coast. >> it's very disappointing. we worked hard to bring the community back. what the coast guard is saying about the source of that oil. >> also what happened during a police chase. good morning, northbound 280 coming up into the valley. another update straight ahead.

effect in japan. it's workers at -- it's for the workers at the damaged nuclear plant. a few hours ago the workers were told to get out of there after smoke started coming outs of the reactor number three. air attacks have scattered in libya. u.n. coalition authoritying are planning to hand control of the operation over to other countries. at & t is buying the u.s. version of t-mobile. that will make at & t the largest cell phone coverage in the country. the deal still needs government control. two police officers were sent to the hospital after they suffered injuries from a foot chase. kraig debro is live.

>> reporter: good morning, pam. according to the san francisco police this all began when the officer suspected three people in another car were in a stolen car. it happened around 2:00 a.m. this morning. according to police they gave pursuit. not clear how long the pursuit lasted or what speeds the pursuit reached at some point the three men in the car stopped or crashed into something anthony got out and fled -- into something and then got out and fled on foot. the officers suffered injuries on the pursuit. the three suspects in the car were not apprehend. police are working on ids of the people in car. reporting live live in san francisco kraig debro.

this morning people in louisiana are worried about an oily substance washing on shore. >> i wanted to break out and cry. >> the u.s. coast guard confirms it is not related to last years massive bp oil spill. they say it came from a separate oil project. the source is insecure but it's still worrying people in louisiana that were hoping to atact more tour this year. >> it's very disappointing. we really work hard to bring our community back. to see the tourist come in and get in our business and get everybody off the ground. this is a great summer we expected. >> the coast guard is also watching a mile long patch of sludge. that is likely cause the by river sediment. >> that is a heartbreaker. >> they have dealt with so much. any heartbreaking things happening around the toll

plaza? >> no. i wouldn't call it a great commute right now. we did have that earlier crash as i have been mentioning. they did get it out of the way and i would say it's improving right now. westbound there was a crash in the lanes. the bridge crews are very thick about this. we are seeing some improve be that is about tin minutes now. let's move along and take a look at northbound 24. also if you are looking at the south bay just looking at the maps here remember when you see red and yellow it means slow and slower. but right now we see a lot of green. 6:48 let's go to rosemary. good morning, to you. we have wide spread gray overhead. and within the clouds those scattered rain showers continue

elevations could get two inches of rain. today we are going to leave am scattered shower. it will feel a lot like yesterday where we saw a little bit of sunshine and rain. wide spread 40s in the noon hour. and for the afternoon the wide spread 50s mid to upper 50s which again below average this time of year. your extended forecast doesn't really get much better. maybe tonight into tomorrow our best shot at getting some dry weather so enjoy it. by tuesday afternoon evening here it comes once again lingering through wednesday. could be a little heavy at times through thursday morning. showers continuing for the last business day of the week and into the weekend. it looks like we start out dry. but by afternoon and evening rain is moving in. predicted shortages of cars made only in japan has spurred a buying spree.

battling graffiti with art. livermore has started a plan to paint you tilety boxes around the town. anyone can apply to paint one you have to submit your design idea to the city. they hope the businesses and individuals will sponsor the boxes. hayward has a similar program. people there say it has helped reduce graffiti by 97%. san francisco based twitter is celebrating a big anniversary. founder jack dorothy tweeted the words inviting coworkers. since then more than 175 million users have shared their ideas. less than a week ago the site set a record for 6, 939 tweets per second. that was immediately after the earthquake hit japan. let's check your commute.
