we begin with a perjury trial of home run king barry bonds after eight years of investigation jury selection is now under way in a san francisco courtroom. ktvu allie rasmus joins us live to let us know why it has been a busy morning so far. good afternoon allie. >> reporter: good afternoon tori. the jury selection process started at 8:30 this morning. in this federal bidding. on the 18th floor. barry bonds is in that courtroom watching the proceedings. he pulled up to the courthouse just before 8:00 this morning in a black suv and walked in and cleared security just like everyone else. they started out with 100 perspective jurors and so far 42 have been dismissed either because some of the attorneys felt they heard or knew too much about the case.

one was dismiss because of a recent death in the family. the ones left were asked to stand up and say what city that lived in, if they were married, their profession. most said yes they could be fair. there were a couple statements said that raised a few eyebrows. a couple people said no. it gave an impression just how difficult it can be to find totally impartial jurors. one juror from san francisco said i would be reluctant to render a judgment against a great athlete like mr. bonds so yes that would cloud my judgment. another potential juror said she could not be impartial saying i worked as a flight attendant on charter planes for baseball and football planes. she did not obviously have a very positive experience working with professional baseball players. those two examples gives you an idea of the challenges involved in finding a total of 16 people

news chopper 2 where a dozen boats washed ashore. boats turned on their sides and on the rocks near some homes. we just talked to the coast guard. they tell ktvu the boats blew ashore during high winds and unusually high tides early sunday morning. most are sailboats. there are a few motor boats. a burglary in san francisco police say a thief ransacked a preschool and a church. kraig debro obtained surveillance video showing the crime in progress. >> reporter: in talking to people there are a few things they find more offensive than the theft of a preschool unless it's the theft of a church. this afternoon the operators of both a church and preschool say they were victimized by the same person. this is the guy police want to

catch. at 4:20 this morning video surveillance catch him walking by the door. directors believe the man broke this window to a classroom and entered the building. one of the first items he steals is a can of soda. >> we have food we keep here for the homeless. the person had the audacity top break into the pantry where we keep that food and eat some food. >> reporter: the damage was done at the child care center downstairs but the burglar also broke spot church upstairs. at one point he thinks about his next move. minutes later you see him carry out a church keyboard. a church elder that regularly comes back to put back things notices it. >> i noticed all the doors down the hall were opened. >> reporter: some of the doors were kicked open and offices ransacked. they are hoping this realtively clear image will help police bring the man to justice. >> hopefully the public can

help us catch somebody that doesn't have any respect for a church or a school. >> you can forget buffer you don't necessarily forget. >> reporter: now this church isn't the only one to have been victimized since last august several have been victimized including one up the street there. it was victimized five times in one month and just 100 yards away from this churning on lake side. reporting live in san francisco kraig debro. >> all right thank you. stormy weather brought down a tree overnight in san francisco. this was the scene in front of the ymca. the tree did not cause any damage when it fell. latest round of winter storms that caused trees to come down all over the bay area causing power outages and trapping cars. there is road problems in yosemite right now. streets are closed because of snow.

john fouler is one of the impacted motorists and joins us live on the phone. caller: good afternoon pea spoke to park rangers that told us both highway 140 is closed because of rock slides and mud slides and snow. and highway 120 is closed because of snow and down trees. also highways 41 and 49 are also closed in various parts in the sierra. this was a powerful winter storm now turning into the first storm of the -- that is turning into the first storm of the spring. i'm at 3500 feet right now and very light snow is falling. i'm told at higher elevations the snow is coming down very heavily. we expect to have road openings perhaps later this afternoon or evening. >> are people trying to turn around and find a place to stay in yosemite if they can't get out? caller: there is nowhere to

stay in yosemite. they caravaned people that were in the park out of the park late yesterday afternoon. and today they are not allowing anyone in. the people that are in the park are stranded. i got a tweet from someone in the park that said it's beautifully lovely and quiet. >> it must be beautiful. it's pretty any time but with more snow it's even more scenic. caller: absolutely. i haven't seen a picture just yet. but from the person that tweeted me said the snow is covering everyone. but outside there are many people still scrambling to find places to stay. trying to get in to the park for the very popular first week of the spring. >> all right so 140 and 120 closed right now because of snow but may be open later this afternoon? caller: possibly. the park rangers are saying they are making good progress on clearing the trees and the down power lines. but there is no estimated time

yet. they are hoping later this afternoon or evening. >> thank you. live on the phone with us this afternoon. thank you. and stormy weather also battered southern california. the grapevine on interstate 5 was shut down for 12 hours due to snow and ice. many drivers spent time in their cars. they started escorting drivers through that main mountain pass around 8:00 this morning. brief plumes of smoke rising from two crippled nuclear reactors is delaying them to cool them. workers were evacwaited by late afternoon. it's not known what caused the smoke. officials say there has not been a spike in radiation in the area. at this point cooling systems for two out of the six reactors there are running normally.

the world health organization say there is is little short-term risks from food contaminated by radiation in japan. they fear it has spread beyond the 18-mile zone. japanese officials have banned the sell of spinach and milk from areas around the reactors. the situation needs to be monitored carefully because food born radiation is a more serious risk of health. top u.s. safety initials are calling for inspections at all u.s. plants in light of what is happening in japan. the nuclear regulatory commission met in rockville maryland today. they will review all 104 u.s. nuclear plants and determine if any changes are necessary. >> here in the united states we have an obligation to the united states to under take a methodical review of our own

facilities. >> lawmakers and antinuclear activist are also calling for safety measures in our own quake prone state. nancy pelosi was briefly hospitalized in rome. she was scheduled to meet with italy's defense minister when he was admitted today. she has since resumed her schedule and released a statement saying quote after several flights yesterday and afghanistan and a long flight back to italy that arrived early this morning leader pelosi was not feeling well. she was advised to visit a clinic. and the closest medical facility was a hospital. she is now resuming her schedule in italy. punishing air strikes in libya. reports military officials are denying today. the wild weekend weather continues. we will have your back to work

president -- has a more limited goal of establishing a no fly zone over libya. meanwhile u.s. military officials and observers deny mr. gadhafi was the target of missile strikes that hit his compound over the weekend. reports say two missiles hit a building and it lay in shambles last night. military analysts say the target was the command and control structure inside the building. >> it is not gadhafi. if he happens to be some place where they are striking, that is his problem. >> even as progadhafi strikers took to the street. turkey has secured the release of four new york time journalists that have been

prisoners in libya. the journalists were captured in the eastern part of that country last week. the new york times say the four entered the country from egypt without visas. hip hop artist is recovering from a minor gunshot wound on his hand during a visit to his native haiti. the 41-year-old singer was injured shortly after stepping out of his car on saturday in port-au prince. he was there to support a candidate. he wanted to run in that election but haitian officials rejected his candidacy because his primary residence is in new jersey. he has been visiting flood and cyclone victims. many star struck young ladies

were greeting him. he also hinted returning to australia for a honeymoon with kate middleton after they are married late next month. santa cruz county officials will have a response after the tsunami surge. now county officials are expecting an even bigger turnout. in the meantime north harbor where most of the damage occurred is still closed. south harbor is opened for boats under six feet. people are being warned not go out today because of unsafe weather conditions. tonight tsunami's readiness takes place at 7:00 p.m.. once again louisiana residents are worried about an oily substance that has washed up near new orleans. >> just wanted to break out crying. this is probably going to happen the rest of our lives. >> the coast guard says that

shape and move in. >> after the time change i'm ready for spring like weather. we'll have to wait a little while. the american academy of pediatrics has come out with new guidelines that can save your child's life. they recommend babies be left in rear facing safety seats until they are two years old. they also recommend that children ride in booster seats until they are 4'9" and between 8-12 years old. no child under the age of 13 should be allowed to ride in the front seat. transportation officials say americans are gaining more weight and it's creating safety and space concerns on buses. the federal transit authority is proposing raising the assumed rate of city passengers from 150 to 175 pounds. officials say the changes acknowledge the expanding girth of the average passenger. if approved fewer passengers

it has been a good day so far for stocks even though the uncertainty will continue for japan. markets are upright now. nasdaq up 43. s & p up 16. the big reason for the increase in stocks today the countries largest wireless provider is taking a big step to become number one. a & t -- at & t has reached the deal to buy t-mobile. the deal still needs approval from regulators. that could take until the end of the year. at & t is not saying how the merger will face pricing but it will improve price coverage. remove an app from its iphone store. the apcoms from a religious organization that offers conversion therapy to help gays
