joining us on this tuesday, march 22nd i'm pam cook. it sounds like we could see a lot of rain this weekend but is it off own an showers or another big storm? steve paulson has the answers. >> a lot of questions there, pam. mainly it's cloudy. it's leading up to what will be more rain coming in tonight. the system still has a lot of rain to go. along 24 and also down toward san jose which we will look at coming up in our next segment. now to sal. highway 24 traffic looks good all the way up to oakland. the lanes are clear. the morning commute will be okay on interstate 880 in oakland. it's 4:31 let's go back to pam. in a few hours opening statements begin in barry bonds' perjury try million

allie rasmus is live in san francisco. >> reporter: good morning, pam prosecutors are expected to lay out their case to the jury first. that will take an hour and then defense attorneys for barry bonds will make their opening statements also to take another hour. throughout all of this barry bounds is expected to be -- barry bonds is expected to be in court today. he was in court yesterday for jury trial. by 3:00 there were eight women and four men seat on the jury. they will decide whether or not bonds lied under oath when he denied using steroids. bonds' attorney says the government doesn't have enough evidence to prove that bonds is guilty of perjury. now later today when the jury breaks for lunch, greg anderson is expected to show up in court. he's one of 50 witnesses called by the government to testify in

this case. he has said in the past he will not cooperate. he refuses to testify against bonds. anderson is bonds' childhood friend and person trainer. anderson said he won't testify against bonds in this case. if that is the case, he could be held in contempt of court. he has already spent time in federal prison for not cooperating with investigators in the past. during the lunch break today we could see anderson being hauled back to prison if he is held in contempt of court. live in san francisco allie rasmus. hillside in the santa cruz mountains came crashing down yesterday. now rocks and debris are blocking the road preventing people getting to and from their home. it's along nelson road in the community of scotts valley. take a look at that one person

caught the whole thing on tape as tons of mud, rock, and trees slid off that hillside stranding 26 homes on the other side. it happened just before 10:00 yesterday morning. five hours later we had news chopper two showing the extent of that slide. some 200 feet wide. >> it's just trembling, rumbling just really a deafening sound as the trees and rocks kept rolling. and it was very scary. >> fortunately no one was injured. right now there is a voluntary evacuation order in place. nelson road is closed to cars but a trail was established for residents to walk in and out of the area. the fire department tells us they are going to leave the light alone for now and then reassess what to do later today. the roads into yosemite national park remain closed this morning all thanks to the

early spring park. the entrances were shut down from heavy snowfall. cleanup crews have been busy with fallen trees. people are hoping to spend time in the park yesterday had to be escorted out. yosemite officials say highway 140 oak trance to the park could open later today. the entrances on highway 120 and 41 still remain closed. heavy snow is proving to be a delight for heavy skiers and borders. they have three feet of fresh snow. sugar bowl reports seven feet of snow and helply ski resort says five feet of snow has fallen there in the last few days. there an effort in marin county to recover a number of boats that were blown ashore during this weekend's storm.

17 boats broke loose and were blown across richardson bay. nine boats have been removed by their owns but eight others are still in the water and severely damaged. >> every year boats that are anchored out in this harbor because it's a shallow harbor. too much wind, old equipment and boats break free. >> it is the owners responsibility to remove the boats. the harbor administrator says the cost of removing the boats could run from $1500 to $3,000. overnight japan experiences its strongest after shocks in more than a week. a magnitude 6.6 quake hit the east coast just after 3:00 p.m. local time. it was located 182 miles off the coast of sendai. two hours later a 6.4 hit further south. 30 minutes after that another

6.6 quake hit north of sendai. the pacific tsunami center says the quakes have the potential to create small tsunamis in japan but pose no danger for the west coast of the united states. today a japanese nuclear safety official says a pool for storing spent fuel at the damaged the nuclear plant is heating up with temperatures nearing the boiling point. that is believed to be the point of the scheme. but experts say it could take days or weeks to get the systems working again. just about an hour the first of 500 military families evacuated from japan will make their arrival in the bay area. right now the families are on chartered military flights. the first is to land at travis air force base in fairfield at 5:45 this morning.

coming up in the next half hour we will go live to travis air force base for their arrival. in santa cruz survey of damage left behind from the tsunami surge is expected to be completed later today. crews have been using sonar equipment to try to locate any debris in the harbor. yesterday two more sungen boats were found. it's estimated the tsunami surge cost $26 million in damage to the santa cruz harbor and boats. 4:38 is the time right now. let's check in with sal for an early look at traffic. >> traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area. although it is a little bit wet out there. experienced rain in the drive in myself. traffic is going to be okay coming up to the 80 split if you are driving on southbound 101 it looks okay as well. also at the bay bridge toll plaza it's light westbound coming into the city. there are no major problems on the bridge. if you are driving in the south

bay northbound 280 traffic is moving well. most of the problems we have had are not big enough to cause any major delays at this point. let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you. we have another system getting closer. not too well organized but it's on its way. this is not anything close to what we had on saturday night or sunday. but there is one behind it that looks stronger. it will continue to juice up the atmosphere and bring in lane. there is scattered showers around. the low is back here. so that has to come in. there is one behind that. the next couple of days look rather active. again it's going to be more steady rain or a little breezy not a howling rain. 40s on your temps. low to mid. oakland at 48. you get a look at that low spinning. so cloudy, now there will be

40 people were asked to evacuate. everyone has been allowed to return home. many say their properties are still a mess. >> larger junks of mud started to fall. it just became a nightmare it just kept coming and coming. >> in addition to the mud slides the heavy rain crushed part of a roof at a big lots store. it could be a game changer in the fight to build a new home for the 49ers in santa clara. last night the city council met in an morning session and voted to start spending $4 million in redevelopment money. they wanted to act before that money dis appears. >> i understand that states determine a situation where they are trying to balance their budget. but these are local dollars. >> the council approved the deal even though members

received a copy of the contract just two hours before that meeting. just within the last two hours a report came in out of libya that a u.s. fighter jet crashed in a libyan field. the jet had some sort of mechanical failure that it was not shot down. the military also says both crew members on board the jet were able to eject and are now safe. this comes as the u.s. and european allies continue launching air strikes to enforce an a u.n. no fly zone over libya. president obama is keeping an eye on the military operation in libya from latin america. right now the president is in chile the second stop in his five-day tour of the region. last night mr. obama and first lady michelle obama attended a dinner at the chilean president. earlier in the day two leaders

held a press conference where they talked about libya and the u.s. plans on stepping back its role. >> there will be a transition taking place in which we have a range of coalition partners the european members of the arab league that will be participating in establishing a no fly zone. >> later today the president is scheduled to arrive in el salvador his last stop before heading back to the united states. president obama continues his latin tour officials in his administration are expected to release a statement today calling on the united nations to stop discrimination of gays and lesbians around the world. it will been made at the gee nova base human rights council. an official vote could come later this year. also today vice president joe biden is expected to unvail a new program meant to reform higher education around the

country. the program would include money for states to boost their college completion rates. right now 75% of all high school graduates in the u.s. go to college but less than half actually earn a degree. the obama administration wants the u.s. college garage rate to rank first in the world by 2020. a san francisco priest is on leave this morning in the latest church sex abuse scandal. former father daniel keohane is accused of abusing a 17-year- old girl when he was assigned to the san francisco's church. the allegations came to light after he applied for a new job with the church. >> it was nothing to do with children. it was simply staff services and the file that had gone back 31 years.

>> father keohane is denying the allegations. the prosecution in the alexander youshock case will resume their rebuttable tomorrow. yesterday youshock say he never thought twice about carrying out his plan to kill three teachers in 2009. but the former student also says he is not guilty by reason of insanity. if he is found guilty a second trial will take place to determine his insanity. people are being told to be on the lookout for a mountain lion. someone spotted the mountain lion yesterday morning on farm road near wood view lane. residents that live in the area are being advised to avoid hiking and driving particularly at dawn or dusk or at night to avoid encountering the animal. jurors in the barry bonds' case may want to say thanks to

a former illinois governor. how rob blagojevich is becoming a factor in the trial. a lot of promises were made for the bay area's first toll lane. are those promises living up to reality?

welcome back to the morning news. a new report says the united airlines flight heading to san francisco last may was allowed to take off without repairs despite a reported problem. the pilots say they heard a hissing noise and saw 14-inch flames coming from the cockpit window. the crews were able to put out the flames and make an emergency landing in washington, d.c.. a captain that flew it earlier reported an overheated condition in the cockpit

window. six months after the bay area's first toll lane opened and the verdict on its effectiveness is still out. 7500 vehicles a week use that loan on interstate 680 between pleasanton and fremont. some drivers wonder if they really save that much time. the lane was also projected to bring in $2 million a year. so far it has only brought in $400,000. the economic downturn is to blame for the reduced revenues. >> they were higher when the project first started but the change in the economy we reassessed the expectations. >> it cost $195 million to build that toll lane and the hope is when the economy recovers, the tolls should bring in $4-5 million a year. pretty interesting. 4:52 is the time. have you heard a lot about that from commuters? >> i haven't heard any

complaints. usually people are not shy to complain about those things. we also haven't heard of a lot of traffic jams in that area in the last year or so. let's take a look at the commute here on highway 24 getting up to the caldecott tunnel. traffic is moving well. there is no major problems here. also the morning commute looks good if you are driving on interstate 880 up to the coliseum getting up to oakland. this mornings commute is moving well on westbound 92 getting out to the high-rise. it's 4:53 let's go to steve. sal, thank you sir. we do have scattered showers out there. the rain is on the way again. it will mainly be a cloudy day. yesterday was kind of a break. we are starting to pick up the rain tonight. we will take it into thursday. the usual suspects again russian rivers and santa cruz mountains. the pattern is showing signs of

moving farther north. but that's the way it's looking right now. one system coming in doesn't look that impressive. there is a little low to the far left of your screen. that has to move in. out ahead of that we are getting light rain down south of san jose. a little bit right around santa rosa and some in the east bay. a little scattered stuff offshore. the key is another low is dropping in. it's back here. that will pick up the wind. not as bad as saturday night. another low will drop in. that lies the tuesday night into wednesday. low 40s. mid 40s. a few upper 40s. just take the rain gear with you today. i know that doesn't look like much. it's not an oh my gosh kind of a system. it will give us a lot of cloud cover. we start off with morning rain and the system will work its way in and get stronger as we start to develop later in the afternoon. that will bring rain and wind in and cooler conditions and a possibility of thunderstorms as we head toward midweek.
