through rapidly. good morning. it's wednesday, march 23rd. breaking news. legendary hollywood actress elizabeth taylor has died. she had been suffering from congestive heart failure for a few years. per publicist said she passed a way peacefully with her children, greatgrandchildren by her side. she appeared in over 50 films. she won oscars for her performances in "butterflies 8." and "who'se afraid of virginia woolf?" in her later years she focused

on humanitarian causes. she was 79 years old. 7:01. returning now to our other big story for you. right now, a new round of storms hitting the bay area. ktvu's steve paulson is in the weather center starting our team coverage. >> that's correct, dave. we had that cold front sitting out there. it came in this mo everyoning -- in this morning. we'll show you areas that have been hit hard, lake county. flash flood watch is out there. the rain is decreasing. come out wide. you can see the north bay is on the drier side but still stretching from san rafael to the east side, especially from highway 4 to mount diablo, livermore, altamont pass,

pleasanton, san ramon. good news in the santa cruz mountains, it looks like the rain is lets up a little bit. we'll still have shower activity. another system rolls in tomorrow. over to sal now. it's going to be a tough drive. the bay bridge is under a high wind advisory. the rain has been moving through. we'll we've had a number of accidents. a lot of fender-benders and people losing control and ending up facing the wrong way on the freeway. 280 is moving along okay. there is a lot of sanding water on paul avenue and some other spots that always gets flooded. be careful as you drive through and don't drive into standing water. >> we'll be checking in with

steve and sal this morning. the bay area's barely had time to dry out and already this wet wave of weather has arrived. folks who live on hillsides are especially nervous. a flash flood watch is in effect increasing the potential for landslides. in san rafael, the ground is already saturated after 1.50 of rain fell over the weekend. >> the usgs says it's monitoring sleep slopes that are prone to landslides. >> there's a certain amount of rain that you have to put in the soil to make it moist. we are 180% over that amount. >> in oakland, one lane of park boulevard remains closed after a hillside gave way this weekend. officials with the church that sits above the slide say they are paying close attention. and a john rock pile has

been blocking nelson road since monday. a public works official says the hillside is unstable and it could be weeks now before crews are able to clear the debris. the only way to access 33 homes is a footpath and homes above the slide are still without power. a neighborhood meeting is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. today. now to the latest in japan. the level of radioactive iodide in tap water is -- iodine in top water is two times the recommended for infants. parents are being told not to give their infants tap water. officials say, how far, the radioactive level in tokyo's tap water is not an immediate health risk for the adults.

and the u.s. just became the first agency to block food, the import of milk, vegetables and fruits, produced in that area near the power plant. japanese food, by the way, the imports make up less than 4% of all imports. new sh morning, a shooting -- new this morning, a shooting investigation. a woman was shot last night around 10:30 on pine street. police say the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the neck but her injuries are not life- threatening. so far police are not saying anything about the suspects or a possible motive. 7:06. in just 90 minutes from right now, testimony resumes in the barry bonds's perjury trial. the first witness, the key prosecutor will go back on the stand for cross-examination. tara moriarty is live in san francisco outside the

courthouse right now. >> reporter: all he had to do was tell the truth but he couldn't do it. that statement made by barry bonds' pointman. nowitzki will continue testimony in about an hour and a half. the federal drug agent involved in the balco funds said bonds had immunity but still lied. sometime today, steve mosque kins will take the -- hoskins will take the stand. also on the list, mike murphy, the giants' clubhouse manager will testify about his hat size. one of bonds's attorney spoke briefly to the media. >> anything that might be remotely interesting to you we're not gonna talk about. we we're not gonna disrespect the jury or the case.

go. mainly around fairfield, vacaville then to east bay. highway 4, 580, mount diablo back to oakland, heading on highway 24 and then all the way down to san jose, 680, 880 and then into the santa cruz mountains. good news, it looks like it's starting to decrease that heads into the santa cruz mountains. but still rain off and on. ben lomond's had almost 2.50. mill valley, almost 1. sanfrancisco almost .50. cazadero, russian river 2.25. santacruz mountains, the projected five-day total. already 5 inches today. as you know they've had mudslide issues. so potentialed intoing, possible flooding will continue. 40s upper 40s, mid-40s, low 50s. temperatures are cool with the

over to fremont, pleasanton, livermore and the east bay continues to get pretty good rain, especially towards highway 4 and back towards concord -- concord. decreasing rain up to the north bay, mendocino county and lake county. more coming up in five minutes. this morning, federal agents and san francisco police are taling up to investigate a mysterious airline threat. it involves a flight from the phillippines that landed at sfo last night. officers with bomb-sniffing dogs ned every inch of the cargo area of the plane. the search came in response to a telephone threat hours earlier against the phillippines's airline flight from manila to san francisco. the lead singer from the rock band "journey" happened to be on the flight. >> we didn't know anything until we were told there's a bomb threat. i called my wife, and then they said -- you know, there's something going on in our plane. that's the only time i knew

something was going on. >> agents took action the moment the jet touched down at sfo. they evacuated the 337 passengers and 20 crew members and then moved the jet to a remote part of the airport. they searched the luggage for several hours but did not find anything. breaking news. violence breaks out in israel. israeli police are becaming palestinian milliary tants for a -- militants for a bomb attack. militants planted a two-pound device in a bag on the sidewalk. authorities say 25 people were wounded, several critically, in today's attack. there's been no claim of responsibility for the attack, which is the first bombing in jerusalem in years. several new reports of coalition strikes in the libyan air base this morning. and libyan leader, gadhafi,

the crisis. his international forces are growing, as turkey and qatar are joining the operations. back to you. >> thank you, alison. 7:18. well, the price tag for u.s. involvement in libya is topping the hundred-million-dollar mark. there's a lot debate over more funding in washington, d.c. according to the u.s. navy, the u.s. has spent $225 million on tomahawk missiles just to establish that no-fly zone in libya. it will cost $100 million a week to maintain that zone. military officials say they may have to ask congress for more money now but lawmakers on both sides say america cannot afford it. 7:19. this just out, the congress department says new home sales fell by almost 20% last month. that figure represents the sale of 250,000 homes which is lowest level on record. it's also lower than economists

expected. they predicted a 2% rise in sales to 285,000 homes new -- new homes sold. palo alto partners and education, it's a nonprofit foundation, says it will donate a record $3.4 million to city schools. the nonprofit says while parent contributions were up, people without children enrolled in district schools donated 68% more than last year. some of the money will be used to pay for classroom aide, elective courses and guidance counsels remembers. claims of eating cereal for breakfast is good for you, researchers from boston found said, and that lowers the man's chances of hypertension by

at berkeley. school officials are adopting a policy that will help kids report serious situations. >> we'll also have a text messaging servicing that is keked to that where kids can report -- connected to that where kids can report anonymously. >> during their investigation, police say they received a tip that another student also had a gun. police removed that student from class and found an unloaded semi-automatic weapon. all three students were taken to juvenile hall. there is a new report that says several bay area bridge the and overpasses need repair -- bridges and overpasses need repair. 34% of bridges and overpasses are considered deficient in san mateo and alameda county, 22%

are labeled deficient. in santa clara county, 19%. now, caltrans says just because a bridge is considered deficient does not necessarily mean imty meant danger -- imminent danger. toyota had planned to roll out a new version of the prius in april. however, the quake and tsunami in japan disrupted a supply chain. now, toyota says -- says they can't say when that vehicle will make its debut. we want to check in with sal, who is keeping a close eye on the traffic. >> that's right. it seems to have calmed down a little bit. early in the morning, people were getting into more serious crashes. now there are a lot of fender- benders out there. it's windy. even our camera is shaky here on the westbound approach to the incline section.

port up in sacramento county. excepted to go to flood stage today. if not today, then thursday. we have the system moving on through. it's been tense. the weather is decreasing in the north bay. not so bad in the north bay. but we do have towards the east bay, trying to pick up some pretty good rain, especially on 80 back to highway 4 and then over towards 580. but decreasing now. you can see the same for the santa cruz mountains. but on peninsula we're still getting rains. the good news, maybe in another hour we'll be done. lompico up in the santa cruz mountains. 2.75. that's too much rain too soon. there's more on the way. mill valley, 1 inch. sanfrancisco almost .50. oakland's picked up .3. one system will give us shower activity. that next system dropping down looks to be heavier for tomorrow. morning rain, wind gives way to possible showers. a lot of upper 50s.

as we've been reporting actress elizabeth taylor died of congestive heart failure this morning at the age of 79. her publicist said she passed away peacefully at cedars-sinai medical center in l.a. with her children by her side. in 1960 she became the highest- paid actress up to that time when she signed a $1 million contract to star in cleopatra. she won three oscars, including a special one for her humanitarian work. she was parried eight times.

give you the latest image right there starting to wind down. but still some scattered areas of moderate to heavy rain. down towards -- let me go down towards morgan hill and gilroy, there's been moderate rain stretching there. it looks like -- even though they've had a few inches of we're starting to see a decrease there, especially the san mateo bridge, and starts to decrease as you get towards sfo and daly city. steve, right now traffic is not doing all that well. we have high wind advisories for several of the bay area bridges, including this one, the san mateo ridge. as you might imagine, driving around the bay area is not great right now. we've had a lot of fender- benders, a lot of accidents and a lot of spinouts. jade hernandez has been cover everything the storm. she's right near the bay bridge right now with this report. >> good morning, sal. we were at sfo a couple of

hours, heavy rains there. then we traveled into the city and now we are live near the bay bridge tacoma. you can see we've been monitoring the roadways this morning and california highway patrol activities. high wind advisories as you mentioned on several bay area bridges. i want you to take a look at the electronic message board that you hit just before you get on the bay bridge, a high wind advisory was issued around 3:15 this morning, minutes before a similar advisory was issued for the san mateo bridge. at mit need an advisory warned drivers on the san rafael bridge when they crossed as well. the california highway patrol responded to this accident in the northbound rains of -- lanes of 280, just over the boulevard. that was about two and a half hours ago. someone aren'ted the two-car accident just before 5:00 this morning. the driver and passenger were hurt. they were in one of the

vehicles involved. we don't know how serious but paramedics were involved in the scene. it appears one of the vehicles involved was a pickup truck. heavy rains cause accidents and the chp warns about the dangers of hydroplaning. in the hast hour, 15 accidents were reported. drivers in san francisco and oakland have also experienced flooding in several areas in the bay area. we're gonna keep an eye out on the roads. you can check back in on -- in on us. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning oakland police are out there searching for suspects in a double homicide at 61st and harmon avenue. it hooped last night just before 8:00. police say both members were shot several times and died right there at the scene. several witnesses heard the gunshots but so far, police say

they have no description of the shooters or the getaway car. if you have any information, contact oakland police. it is 7:35. sanjose police are asking for your help in finding a missing at-risk teenager. 17-year-old jacob mcneilly was last seen on monday. he was being dropped off at his grandmother's home. but his grandmother bass not -- was not home at the time. mcneilly suffers from autism. he was wearing a black and maroon sweatshirt, maroon jeans and maroon shoes when he i disappear. governor brown considering an alternative plan just in case state lawmakers don't come to an agreement on the special election for the june ballot by the end of this week. reportedly the governor may announce a november initiative instead to try to extend taxes. that scenario would bypass the republican opposition, because it would require a signature drive to get that on the ballot.

today, the board of supervisors are expected to decide whether some small businesses in the midcorridor should get a boost. supervisors decided to try to keep twitter in san francisco by offering a payroll tax break if it moved to a different location in twitter. twitter is looking -- is looking at the old -- moving into the old furniture mart. no one matched all six millions for the -- for the megajackpot >> that pushes friday's jackpot pass the $300 million. the cash option is almost $200 million, the largest jackpot ever was $390 million with two

and also at the toll plaza. moving along and taking a look a the hayward to union city to fremont commute, some busy -- pretty busy traffic there. the slow traffic -- the slowest traffic is 101. i think 280 should be avoided from ceremonial mall area. it's pretty slow. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. we'll start to see a break in this rain. tomorrow afternoon,/evening heavy rain returns. a flash flood warning has been issued for clearlake and lake port and also clearlake oaks. i wouldn't be surprised if they update the cause along the yolo

causeway to a warning. it's a watch now. there's so much snow up there, they are releasing water like crazy. 57,000 cubic feet per second. all of that is coming down. incredible amounts of water. nordon has had over 500 inches. normally in an entire year they get 450. and san francisco has passed their yearliage for the rain. i would say we're doing pretty well. the own location under 100% is san jose. and i think's will make that up in the next 46 to 8 hurts. everyone else is over 100%. the good news is starting to decrease on the peninsula but there's still rain, parts of the east bay, on the peninsula, over the bridges, dam burton and out to the carquinez straight. but the next hour, this should start to move but the pattern

is not changing until maybe sunday. we'll see some rain on saturday. a break on sunday. there's not a consensus on how much rain we'll see. the other one says, no, no. we're gonna cone on. we'll see what's on friday. the low continues to spin off eureka and that will funnel in showers and possible thunderstorms today. there are some breaks here but that will just help juice the atmosphere up. lompico, sergey, 2.75. ben lomond has had 2. lake county valley mill valley, 1. the projected amount for the five-day -- and the projected rainfall amount, 2 to 5. we've already had flooding and also out to the sacramento

valley and lake county. these will be areas that we watch very closely. cazadero 2 inches. sfo .3 and jay picked up .45. one system will get bumped along but we'll keep shower activity going. this will drop it and then intensify it. just like every other system coming in, that will be the source of our system. sun, clouds, shower. 50s for a lot of temperatures, or very low os. the five-day no real break until sunday. then it looks like things finally calm down a little bit. we need it. obviously rain here, more snow is expected to the -- expected in the sierra as more storms blow through. brian hickey joins us from blue canyon now to show us what it look like up there. looks like a lot of snow.

>> reporter: and it keeps coming down. 5,000 feet. we're not even up there yet. you will need those chains to get over the top of the mountains or through the ski areas. with the storms lined up and ready to come in and bury the sierra. you can see here at 5,000 feet. signs are getting buried. the snow markers are getting buried. get up to the summit. the snow depths are completely buried. some say they've received over 600 inches so far this season and coo start pushing 700 by the end of next weekend. , by the end of the season. it will be amazing snow totals. we could be skiing up there. i think the snowpack is gonna be around for quite sometime. as people here continue to dig

gina silva is live outside of cedars-sinai hospital, where elizabeth was treated the last six weeks. >> reporter: good morning. she did lose her battle early it morning at cedars-sinai medical center. she was 79. she had been here for the last six weeks being treated for congestive heart failure. hospital officials are confirming that she passed away. at one point her condition stabilized and there was hope that she would be able to go home but she sufficiented a number of complications and her health deteriorated. she had been unhealthy for quite sometime. she underwent numerous surgeries, up to 40 different surgeries for her hearts, lungs, hip and brain. now, this morning she was surrounded by her family. taylor is survived by her children, ten grand children

and and four greatgrandchildren. i had just this weekend read the article on resident taylor and richard burton. i was very moved by that article. i hope -- i hope in the afterlife they are reunited. >> have you heard anything about funeral plans for her? >> reporter: no, that's too early. her son has issued a statement, as you know. but other than that it's -- there's talk about controversy where will she be buried. in japan today, they've been able to restore power at one of the damaged rye actorses

at a -- reactors at a nuclear plan. they plan to test a cooling pickup at the number 3 reactor today. it's the first reactor to have electricity stored since the quake and tsunami cut off electricity to that plant. they've been trying to keep them cool by spraying them with sea water. but radiation has still been leaking. the government says the cost of this could reach $309 billion. that would make it the world's most expensive natural disaster on record. and the death toll continues to rise with more than 9400 bodies counted and more that 14,700 people listed as missing. tonight, the san francisco board of supervisors is hosting a fund razor for the relief efforts in -- fund-raiser for the relief efforts in japan. they will action off tickets to sporting events and also spending time one on one with

it's march 23rd. we're still following developing news. hollywood legend elizabeth taylor died just a couplele of hours ago in -- couple of hours ago in los angeles. ms.taylor had been suffering from congestive heart failure and per publicist said she died peacefully. her four children were at her side. she appeared in more than 50 films over her lifetime. she won oscars for performances in "butter field 8" and "who'se afraid of virginia woolf." she was a major spokesperson as well. 8:02. to the other big story, a new round of storms for the bay area. steve paulson is in the weather center tracking the storm. he begins our team coverage. >> tori, no doubt about it. the system took its time getting here but then it finally came in early in the morning. it's moving through.

the good news, the rain has decreased in the north bay is starting to decrease on the peninsula. but we're still not done yet. the system, the low sitting out there spinning will send in more rain later today, more showery in nature around the possibility of some thundershowers. but what's going on right now, is this system is taking aim with moderate to heavy rain. there are other areas where the rain continues to just pick up in intensity, especially out towards pittsburg and antioch. but it's starting to decrease in the north bay. it looks like things are starting to calm down. you can see dry air beginning to come in. same for on the peninsula as well. santacruz mountains, not taking the brunt anymore. there's still rain on 280 and also 1001 from about san francisco south. real quick, i want to take this down to the santa cruz mountains where there's been some real heavy rain, about 2 to 3 inches where they don't

about. when you look west, ominous rain clouds. if i had to guess, i would say it's pouring there. back to the parking lot in mill valley, the situation can change very quickly. now, we were just there two days ago when high tide an relative rain flooded the lot. that's what you had overnight. the tide was higher. we had a bigger problem. it was nothing like it was two days ago. most sections were closed. golden gate transit officials closed the parking lot effectively for the morning. that situation changed later on because just as quickly as the tide was in, it moved out just as quickly. it's not just the parking lot, one lane of the road was closed down there as well. the situation forced commuters there to make other plans. >> it happens frequently here. they have it poved had all around here that the areas that are flooded from the flooding. >> there's a certain amount of rain that you have to have -- that you have to put in the oil

investigating a mysterious airline bomb threat. now, it involves a flight from the phillippines that landed last night at sfo. officers with bomb-sniffing dogs ned every inch of the cargo part of that plane. the search followed a telephone threat hours earlier against the airline flight from manila to san francisco. the lead singer of the rock band "journey" was on that flight. >> we didn't know anything until we were told there was a bomb threat. i called my wife. that's the openly time i knew -- only time i knew something was going on. >> the jet touched down at sfo. . they advocated the 337 passengers and 20 crew members and then moved the jet to a remote part of the airport. they searched luggage for several hours but they didn't find anything.

the bridge. there's a message board barning of the winds. the-- warning of the winds. at midnight an advisory washed drivers on the s an rafael/richmond bridge about strong winds. now to accidents this morning, this is one of the more serious ones reported. the california highway patrol responded to this accident in the northbound lanes of 280 just north of hickey boulevard about two and a half hours ago. someone reformed -- report the two-car accident just after 5 :00. the driver and passenger were hurt. they were one of the vehicles involved. we don't know how serious but paramedics were called to the scene. now, heavy rain has caused slick roadways and the chp warns drivers about the dangers of hydroplaning. drivers in san francisco and 0 oak -- and oakland have experienced flooding during this commute. so just be careful when you head out this morning and take a little patience with you and time. reporting live near the bay

cedars-sinai hospital in los angeles. eric spillman is live outside that hospital, where tailor was treated for the last six weeks. eric? >> reporter: good morning,er to -- tori. elizabeth taylor had been suffering. she checked in here six weeks ago, this time for congestive heart fail lieu. she first got that diagnosis in 2004. it's a condition in which the heart cannot pump another blood to the other organs. the heart has to work a whole lot harder. the symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue and the buildup of fluid, weakness. she had this condition for seven years. her publicist says her condition did stabilize. she did improve even though there were mean complications. they thought she would be able to return but that was not what happened here. taylor died peacefully this morning, surrounded by her family, her children, michael
