francisco. heavier rain out towards millbray as well. heading for another rain event. as this next storm systems moves in it will take aim at the coastal hills. we could easily see rainfall in the hills over the next 24 hours nearing 3 inches. there is a urban and small stream advisory that will go into effect tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. here is the deal. tomorrow morning's commute will be wet and there will be problems. when i come back we will have the latest computer model that will die in exactly when that system should get here and when it finally leaves. a fresh batch of new snow is falling in the sierra tonight and ken pritchard is live in blue cannon. >> reporter: frank, it has been snowing here all day and it just let up in the last half hour. blue canyon. when we talked to you live at 5 p.m. i wanted to demonstrate just how deep the snow is. since 5 p.m., i took a small shovel and dug a relatively big

hole here. complete with stairs. i stand about 6 feet tall. i'm not bottom. i'm not standing on ground i'm standing on show. so this is how much snow we have at blue canyon. when you talk about the snow you also talk about the driving conditions up here. it has been slow going on interstate 80 but relatively accident free. >> reporter: the chain controls were up and snowfall was constant. >> say hi. >> reporter: charlie and his family expected this. >> we kind of knew. it has been snowing for 10 days straight or something like that. >> reporter: since thursday it has been snowing in the sierra on and off, mostly on, more than 6 feet of snow in some places. how does this winter compare to some others. >> probably the best i guess in 30 years. >> reporter: if you're familiar

with the drive, you can see it is coming down steady. this is where the chain control is located. once our chains were on it was a slow but relatively easy 15- mile drive up to blue canyon. chp says traffic was light and with no significant accidents. cal-trans piles kept the interstate open and fairly clear this afternoon. >> i have never driven up here with this much snow. it is crazy. beautiful though. >> reporter: here at blue canyon we are at about 5000 feet in altitude. it is obviously open here. cars are driving by. there is slush on the interstate here. fer coming up be aware that the chain control remains in effect over the summit. at blue canyon, ken pritchard, ktvu channel 2news. the road up to mt. hamilton opened. the winding two-lane road was closed to the public at grant ranch park.

cal-trans crews were trying to save a crumbling hillside. 4000 feet up a light dusting of snow covers the area now. a community meeting just wrapping up in scots valley as residents there try to figure out what to do about that massive landslide that is keeping them from driving to and from their homes. we are joined now to find out if there are any solutions. robert. >> reporter: we are at the scots valley fire station whereas you said the community meeting is just wrapping up and one thing many people told me they know emergency crews are trying their best. this shows you just how important it was to scots valley firefighters to try to get this truck filled with medical supplies and firefighting equipment to the 33 homes cut off from the main road by the landslide. but despite several valient attempts the truck just seemed to sink deeper in the foot path that was just cut for residents yesterday. >> this was pretty thick brush prior to this. so the ground is real soggy and

the rain last night and this morning haven't helped it at all. >> reporter: the foot path is still usable for people to walk in and out but some told us it is difficult to bring in a lot of supplies on foot. >> we are running a little low on propane and depending on how long it takes to clear the slide that may be an issue. >> reporter: at a community meeting with homeowners this afternoon, scots valley officials said they expect to dump crushed rock on the foot path to make a temporary road suitable for vehicles. >> we want you to have propane. >> reporter: even if the landslide seems to be relatively stable right now the ongoing rain still has homeowners concerned but many told us they believe they have gotten past the worst of this ordeal. >> we are all safe and we are all sound and things are looking up a little bit. >> reporter: some people aren't as certain. >> i'm not sure it is done sliding. >> to the right. to the right. >> reporter: as you see crews were finally able to pull the

on the screen because it is kind of difficult to hear. the recorded conversation took place in the spring of 2003 inside the giants locker room. prosecutors claimed the tape shows anderson discussing injecting barry bonds with steroids. hoeskins testified he saw anderson leave bonds bedroom during spring training of 2000 with a syringe. the witness was a childhood friend of bonds and former business partner. a youth football coach is in jail tonight accused of molesting one of his players. 28-year-old michael hagan is facing felony counts accused of sexually abusing a boy. a suspected madam off the hook because the main witness in the case is under investigation himself. the district attorney is

reviewing as many cases of a former contra costa drug task force agent. prosecutors dropped the charges against the woman suspected of running a prostitution service. a stockton man who is behind several bay area bank robberies will be extradited to face criminal charges. the 23-year-old man was caught on surveillance cameras robbing a chase bank in danville earlier this month. san francisco neighbors are getting together to call for more safety measures at what they say is a particularly dangerous intersection. rob roth live at 24th and church street where pedestrians say they are being put at risk every single day. >> reporter: frank, here at 24th and church streets pedestrians describe crossing this intersection with one

word. dangerous. take a look. people have to cross behind muni platforms and also a major bus line running through here and traffic. residents say it is a dangerous mix and they want the city to make it safer. this man says he can see the danger from the front stoop of his market. he says years ago two children were struck by a car as they crossed the street. they survived but he says the dangers still exist. >> we have a lot of seniors. we need to have some protection on this crosswalk. it is really bad. >> reporter: this martial arts instructor said she was almost struck by a car crossing 24th street. >> the car was actually stopped at the intersection without even looking started to go right almost into me. and fortunately i wasn't struck. >> reporter: pedestrians worry drivers can't always see them because of the muni platform. >> you pay attention, you don't

wander. you look four ways. >> reporter: some complained that often drivers don't come to a complete stop. we set up our camera at the intersection this afternoon and found that to be true. residents sent a letter yesterday to city officials to study the intersection and take action. this comes at a time when three pedestrians have been killed at other intersections within a six-day span. city leaders have promised to make pedestrian safety a higher priority. >> there has been a lot of plans throughout the city, neighborhood plans and now people are calling for actions on that plan. >> reporter: we are back live at 24th and church. the metropolitan transportation agency tells us this is not considered one of the city's more dangerous intersections but supervisor scott warner who represents this neighborhood told me he will request the agency take another look and see if any safety improvements can be made. reporting live in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2news. a coastguard petty officer involved in a boat accident that killed an 8-year-old boy has been sentenced to three

months. as we first told you last night at 6:00 p.m. a jury acquitted the man of involuntary manslaughter but the jury found him guilty of derilection of duty. america's involvement in libya. a demonstration this morning. one of nearly a dozen taking place at the end of the week in major cities across the country. the organizing group answer coalition said america should not be launching another war while vital public services are getting cut at home. house speaker john baynor demanding president obama outline america's goals in libya. a senior u.s. defense official said u.s. war planes are responsible for more than 90% of coalition bombing runs overnight. secretary of state hillary clinton says the quickest way for the libyan leader moammar gadhafi to end this is to step down. california voters seem to

students, teachers and parents rallied in san francisco today against budget cuts. the group marched from the san francisco community school to the excel center post office where they delivered letters to elected officials demanding full funding for public education. monroe elementary school and denman middle school participated in today's rally. turns out families are still leaving san francisco. san francisco examiner crunched the numbers and found that the 2010 u.s. census shows 68,700 fewer children live in the city now compared with the 2000 census. city officials have launched several family friendsly efforts in recent years including creating more affordable housing, creating a college savings account for kindergarteners. a number of states lost out on more than $14 billion in tax collections last year. a u.s. census bureau report released today shows that is much less than the 65 billion loss in 2009. 11 states saw increases in

total tax revenue in 2010 including california. california's tax revenue increased by almost 4%. governor jerry brown is still not giving up his efforts to get gop support for a tax extens ballot measure. >> i'm negotiating in good faith as recently as this morning with a number of republicans and i remain hopeful that the republicans will join with the democrats and let the people vote on their future. >> however, time is running out. a deal must be reached by friday to get the measure on the ballot for a special election in june. without it governor brown says the budget will have to be balanced through cuts alone. california's love/hate but vital relationship with water may be too much of a good thing right now. our consumer editor tom baker traveled 200 miles today to talk with water experts about the impact these latest storms may have on california's already brimming reservoirs and tom joins us now with a live

report. tom? >> reporter: yes, just behind these hills right here. it is an emergency water source for the bay area. it is also a source of recreation. but its real source is about 150 miles away. every second at this reservoir enough water is released to fill two full sized gasoline tanker trucks. today it is 101% full. >> we have enough water now that if it didn't rain a drop our reservoirs would be refilled at the end of the spring and we would start next year out full. >> reporter: the water is so high right now it is actually just starting to come over the humps of these spill ways. the spill way empties into this almost always dry rock creek. >> we put more water in the river to release water to keep it in the reservoirs this year than we normally need to refill our reservoirs. >> reporter: east bay operators have to strike a critical but complex balance between retaining enough water for customers but not releasing too much to create flood hazards

downstream. >> balancing those two between party reservoir and the pg&e reservoirs. >> reporter: that balance continues at east bay mud's five bay area reservoirs. >> some of them are a foot away from being full elevation wise and some are 3 feet away from being full. i expect a big storm on thursday and we will be watching. >> reporter: all of this will be fed by a massive sierra snowpack. >> we see snow levels in the sierra 150% of historical average so we have a very large snowpack. >> reporter: the one big worry. big warm rain storms that could cause a fast melt and uncontrollable runoffs. >> pineapple express coming in on a very large snowpack at this time of the year. >> reporter: hydro electric generation so plentiful they will earn an extra $2 million just from selling power.

i'm consumer editor, ktvu channel 2news. update on a story we first brought you last night at 5 p.m. crews in the sacramento area finished installing a thick plastic sheeting. a 12-inch deep crack was discovered yesterday running along a 240-foot section of the levee. the levee removes runoff from placer county to the sacramento river. scattered showers around the bay area. let's go back to bill for the latest on the rainy weather. >> wet out there right now. scattered showers throughout the bay area. i want to show you where it is raining. showers out around oakland and richmond. albany, san francisco, pacifica. up in the sacramento valley. 60 miles northwest of sacramento in colusa, reports of a funnel cloud and this is some of the damage if in fact that funnel cloud touched down it becomes a tornado. they are on their way to determine whether this would be

the third tornado they have seen in the northern central valley in the last few months. so for us the weather is starting to regroup itself as we go through the next couple days. we are looking for conditions to begin to -- live storm tracker 2 real quick. bit of a computer thing here. we will track the system there then we can see that we have got that cell right there. we will come back to the bay area and you can see the heavier rainfall right there on the bay bridge. forecast overnight lows tonight 30s and 40s. we will have heavy rain and gusty winds as we go into the period. so the five-day forecast shakes out like this. definitely going to be a wet period. heavy rain as we go into tomorrow morning. so your morning's commute is really going to get hit hard. friday we have got scattered showers and then saturday showers remain in the forecast but the real story tomorrow morning early about 6, 7, 8:00 a.m. weather system gets here.

newmark says the new site craig connects.org went live this month and will help different nonprofits form a community and improve their customer service an operations. new home sales plunging to their lowest level in nearly half a century last month. the commerce department says sales fell 16.9% in february to an annually adjusted rate of 250,000 homes. analysts say a healthy sales pace is 700,000 homes. wall street made modest gains today on positive training from mining and energy stocks. investors fierce about global unrest were offset by a report the demands for gasoline has increased. dow jones up 67 points at the closing bell. nasdaq gained 14 points. it is the end of an era. the lasting legacy elizabeth taylor has here in the bay area.

nhl players of the week after he led the league with 11 points in just four games. last saturday joe was credited with his first nhl hat trick but later one of the three goals was rescinded. still, joe says the team is doing all the little things that turns close games their way. >> i think a big thing is we have been on the power play a lot as well and we stayed out of the box. we haven't had to kill many penalties. you get the momentum that way and get zone time. you have to have your conditioning. a lot of it is mental as well. >> giants closer brian wilson shut down his own throwing session in scotsdale today. wilson cited recurring soreness in his left side muscle and hinted he wouldn't fight it if the club decides to sit him out for next thursday's regular season openner l.a. also today in tempe giants lost to the angels 8-0. starting pitcher matt cain allowing five runs in three innings pitched. giants outfielder cody ross left the game in the first period after he made his catch but look at this. he kind of limps along there.
