through town. we have live storm watch coverage for you tonight. ktvu crews are spanned out throughout the bay area. and our chief meteorologist is tracking the storm. let's start with all of that snow in the sierra, here's ken pritchett. >> you can see the snow is still coming down here at blue canyon. and we got very heavy snow yesterday. what you're looking at right now -- [audio difficulties] >> westbound interstate 80 was closed at coalfax. the result a long line of cars packed the parking lots. >> about 5:00 i spent a couple of hours and turned around and went back. >> reporter: stephanie has spent hours waiting in her suv watching dvd. >> we got a couple of bottles of wine in auburn. >> reporter: she and other drivers lined up expecting the interstate to open soon. >> just started about 15 minutes ago, i'm going to wait

to see if they open it up at noon. >> reporter: caltrans said noon would be the time. that changed. still looking like noon? no, 3:00. good luck sir. >> reporter: so much snow fell it simply took time to clear the road. some people decided to call it quits. >> we had to turn all the way back around. >> reporter: others were determined to make it over the summit. >> the snow is epic up there so it's worth the wait, right? well, a technical problem off the spot but i will tell you you're looking at interstate 80 heading toward the bay area. what you see here is cars passing by. what you don't see is semi trucks. westbound 80 opened at about 8:00 this afternoon after being closed for 24 hours because of this heavy snowstorm. eastbound 80 heading toward reno that was worse. that stayed close more than 24

hours till about 3:00 this afternoon. we didn't have snow this afternoon, we have it now. so if you're heading up in a car you can go over the summit. you will need your chains. be prepared because the road conditions may get worse. at blue canyon, ken pritchett. from all the snow up in the sierra to rain in parts of the bay area. it has rained 20 out of 25 days and we're still not done with all of this wet weather. our chief meteorologist bill martin is here right now, what are we looking at? >> yesterday's storm was huge. there's storms out there right now on storm tracker two. the break, even though it's sprinkling is helping out quite a bit. because rivers and creeks are having an opportunity to go down over the next system. the richmond san rafael bridge we have showers near grizzly peak. scattered showers, you may have gotten over one of these cells today. the rain coming down heavy at

times in the dun barton bridge as well. over milpedas. we have heavy rain up in the hills perhaps an inch of rain up in the santa cruz mountains maybe an inch and a half. now the soils are saturated and we're starting to see slippage. to another half an inch, we're going to see more slopping of the hillsides. that's a big concern. so another weather system coming in here tonight and tomorrow morning. we'll have all the details on that. we'll look at the latest computer models in just a minute. all that rain headed o our way could make a bad situation worse. what started as just a crack in the soil turned into a huge landslide. some backyards here are just wiped out. paul. >> that is so true. you have to look at the destruction for yourself. take a look behind me, this

shed used to be long-standing. the áet has moved up an inch, excuse me a foot. you can see it's gone that high up. there's a lot of space inbetween. all of this dirt began up there. the damage is unbelievable. heavy rains over the last few days has caused mud slides here in san pablo. >> you can hear the earth dropping. >> the retaining wall at this home is destroyed. >> the damages are way beyond the house value. >> reporter: huge chunks of the walkers yard has been washed away. the children can no longer play in their swing set because it is now teetering on the edge. and at their neighbor's home. >> my husband and i moved here in 1972 and we've never ever ever experienced anything of this magnitude. >> reporter: 10 years ago, barbara scott's husband built this deck. now it's in jeopardy of collapsing. >> and this deck is teetering. this deck is very, very danger

chambers. and a road in san anselmo gave way. >> the rain was coming down like, i've never seen it come down before. when my husband came home he said, look up there and that's when we saw the water kind of coming down this hill. >> no word tonight on exactly how long those repairs will take. ace train is telling us tonight that service between the san joaquin valley and the south bay should be backup and running again on monday. this is new video from news chopper two where an area where the mud slide blocked the track just outside of fremont yesterday afternoon. crews had it cleaned up by 2:00 this morning. even so, ace train cancelled. ace train does not work on weekend. that's where trees are toppling right on to power lines and even homes. ktvu's robert handa live now in the santa cruz mountains to show us the problems and the

fixes under way. >> reporter: as you heard, the rain has been steadily coming down, and it doesn't take much to cause damage. the people are starting to feel like nature is well picking on them. this 80-foot birch tree came crashing down on power and telephone lines during heavy rain last night. nelson road is where a massive landslide fell monday that stranded 33 homes and also where another huge fir tree crashed the house yesterday. firefighters say that tree barely missed the homeowner. the tree workers were removed today didn't hit a home but cut off power and generated fear. >> i actually was standing in a window and saw the power lines stagging and kind of bouncing. and i went out and i didn't want to get near it but i could see there was a will the of sparking and smoke. >> reporter: pg & e crews said

they've seen a lot of that. >> with the high winds, it just obviously going to cause power outages. we do with the wires, we deal with transformers breaking. so it is pretty typical work for us. >> reporter: this afternoon finally good news for the nelson road homeowners on the other side of the landslide. today the weather calmed down enough to bring in heavy equipment to build a temporary road. a project expected to take a beak. >> how much is everybody looking forward to getting this thing done? >> immensely. everybody has to have a car around the slide and walk around. >> reporter: 100 people evacuated yesterday along the san lorenzo river because of a flood flash warning. the river did not rise as high today but all these homeowners

are watching it. robert handa, ktvu news. the take a look at this video that we have from you tube showing what happened in capitola. you really get a sense of how bad it was. their public works officials say drainpipes failed and the waters came rushing into capitola river forcing the evacuation of a mobile home park and leaving a big sink home. coming up at 630, you're going to hear the stories of people who were caught right in the middle of this. utility crews we just learned are making good progress of getting electricity back on. at one point today more than a thousand homes and businesses were without power. when we just talked to pg & e they said there are only 500 customers right now without electricity and that all of them are in the peninsula. we have coverage on this newscast and on our website. there you can track the weather at any time in your neighborhood over the weekend

with live radar from storm trackerii. you will find it all when you click on the weather tab on ktvu.com. the perjury trial for barry bonds was in recess today and will resume on monday. yesterday the judge heard from dr. barry bowers. he is one of the leading experts on muscle enhancing drugs. next week's witnesses include kimberly bell, bonds former mistress. a woman from livermore was sentenced this afternoon to five years in state prison for having sex with two underaged boys. 42-year-old christine hubs pled no contest to four felony counts. hubs also has to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.

hub social security married and has two children. after his -- hub is married and has two children. after the sentencing, hubs says that his wife is very remorseful and that he still loves her. they tied up a resident, searched the home and left without taking anything. the victim was not hurt, the suspects are both spanish speaking men we're told at about 40 years old. california's unemployment rate has slipped for the second month in a row. as the state added 400 jobs at the end of february. california's jobless rates have fell. unemployment fell in much of the bay area as well to 12.1 in solano county. and 7.8 in marin county.

according to a report by the federal bureau of economic analysis. income statewide increased over all by $38.8 billion from 2009. still it lagged compared to the nationwide increase of 3%. wall street ended this week on an upbeat note following a third straight day of gains. good news from oracle that consumers are spending again. the dow closed at 2,220. the nasdaq rose six points. and we'll be right back after this short break.

core of reactor unit three raising fears of more radiation leaks. crews also found water that is ten thousand times more radio active than normal. people who live around the facility have been told to stay indoors or move to other areas. two weeks after the earthquake and tsunami hit japan the death toll has now hit 10,000. that number will most likely go much higher because 17,000 are still missing and hundreds of thousands of people who lost their homes still have no power or hot meals. today the first cargo ship arrived at the port of oakland. ktvu consumer editor tom vacar is at the port port of oakland where that ship is unloading. >> reporter: you will see the

korea, it arrived today and some people wonder is this black ship radio active? after leaving yokashama it quickly arrived in oakland. people at the port are not concerned. >> it doesn't raise concern for me. i think it'll be in small enough value that it won't be a concern for us. >> i'm not really concerned, i haven't done much research so i'm not rely sure. >> the necessary precaution measures that can be taken to avoid any drastic causes. >> reporter: but what about other u.s. bound ships in the pacific on the way. >> ships coming into this area they should be definitely you know looked at to see if there's any issues with the

another incident where a air traffic controller fell asleep on the job. the pilot got no answer when calling the tower because the only air controller was asleep. nasa has dropped plans to put a sophisticated 3d camera on the next mars rover. james cameron had been helping nasa to help them develop a camera. the rover is scheduled to arrive at mars in august of 2012. california condors have laid ten eggs and more could be on the way. the zoo in portland reports that's the most eggs laid since it joined the effort to save the species in 2003. for the first time this year the zoo plans to transfer two of those four eggs to california where they'll be placed in nests in the wild. well on to our weather now.

we got a little break today. we're seeing green in the radar behind you and looks like more rain on the way. >> it's been a good enough time, the creeks have had an opportunity to come down. and in the bay area, that's what you need is a break to get the rivers down like the napa river which got pretty high yesterday. the san lorenzo creek. that's come down a bunch as you guessed. right now we have showers in the richmond san rafael bridge. heavy showers right in the mid- span. we come back here, all the bridges have a little bit of rain on them. here's the san mateo bridge headed toward hayward: on the side side of the barton bridge headed toward the -- if today had rained half as much as yesterday and we didn't get this break.

we would be giving a whole different newscast. because the mud in the hillsides over loaded from weight from the moisture and we'd be seeing a lot more activity. overnight tonight we get back into the rain. late tonight the rain starts in the north bay. tomorrow morning it's real late. half inch, maybe an inch of rain. that's a lot of rain that's going to come down pretty rapidly. could see a flood advisory tomorrow morning. i think the big impact tomorrow more than anything is going to be the saturated soil and the slippage possible. and the north bay, the coastal hills into santa cruz mountains. we're already starting to see it. so that's what we're watching out for. rosemary orozco will be here tomorrow looking at that. when i come back, latest computer model. why an attorney for target

expanding their sewage treatment. this sewage plant has also over ran their capacity by 160 times. and chp says it could take up to 8:00 tonight for roads to reopen. and ktvu's janine de la vega has video to show how bad the weather was yesterday. >> reporter: this driveway is completely closed off that leads into that mobile home park. there's a pipe that runs underneath the street and it basically broke apart and tore open the street. it sent water into the mobile

home park and into the village. capitola overtaken by water. a virtual river heading into the streets. >> i started getting a little overwhelmed when i started to see the ground collapse. >> when the road crumbled it nearly swallowed this home and several others. >> we want to make sure it doesn't get any worse. >> reporter: in capitola village water flooded much of the business. many of the stores closed for the day while crews soaped up the muddy mess. >> it's crazy. seems like every time i turn around there's another problem. >> we had sandbags out but the water was so fast and so high it just jumped over the

sandbags. >> reporter: this afternoon, the red cross helped mobile home residents by putting them up in a hotel. >> reporter: city officials say the utilitys have been shut off in most of the mobile homes and it could take weeks before people can live here again. reporting live from capitola, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. there is more fall out to report tonight from the big storm surge of the past few days. the heavy rain wiped out the home of a much loved beaver family in martinez. these pictures are from slightly drier times. the lodge where they created their homes have now been washed away. fortunately though, there's the little guy in happier and drier days. we're told the beaver survived. volunteers said that an adult beaver and three kit were seen swimming in the creek.

advice advisory. the main concern will be slippage of the hills. we're seeing a few of the bay area hillsides getting slippage. sundays looks like your best day with a chance of shower. saturday the rain starts in the morning early and lasts right through the early morning hours. there's saturday morning at 5:00 a.m., it's wet. and then we get into saturday about 10:00 it's drying out quickly. as i mentioned, mike mibach and claudine wong will be here with our new show. we do a new saturday morning newscast. they'll be tracking this. my main concern will be the landslides that may occur. here's how it goes. it starts out dry out there now, but the showers and creeks late tonight around midnight, really hits hard about 3:00 to 5:00 in the morning. maybe 6:00 in the morning. but again nothing like what we saw. it's just going to be a good winter storm. the last one was a 10, this one
