attack. good morning, craig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're closer than we've been to the explosion. if you look at the lawn behind me, you can see the damage this explosion did. because police weren't sure there were other devices around the neighborhood, they had to evacuate 50 homes. it happened yesterday morning around 10:20 when a man living in one of the homes here walked outside to get a morning newspaper, the sunday newspaper. the man picked up the paper and something inside the wrap exploded. the newspaper was actually on the yard of the next door neighbor and not the yard of the man who picked it up. the man was air lifted to uc davis medical center. some of his fingers may have been blown off. police aren't releasing his identity nor do they know what caused the explosion.

barry bonds trial resumes and jurors can hear the most explosive testimony yet. barry bonds' former mistress is expected to testify. good morning, ali. >> reporter: good morning, prosecutors are expected to call kimberly bell to the stand. she's expected to talk in detail about the nearly decade- long relationship she had with baseball star barry bonds, first as his girlfriend, later as his mistress when he married. he's accused toll lying to a juror. kimberly bell is supposed to tell the jury he admitted to her he was using steroids. it's a claim he's made before. >> yes, he did tell me that this is something he was doing. >> reporter: now bell is also supposed to talk about physical changes she observed in bonds

pizza and former employee are accused of spray painting a nearby pizza restaurant. bacon house fires are on the rise and firefighters has no idea who's starting them. contra costa firefighters say they've battled at least 14 fires in the last few months. most are started by transients looking for shelter. whoever owns the vacant buildings -- usually banks have the job of keeping them secure. caught with stolen urns with stolen ashes. police made the discovery last thursday. that's where they spotted the man with a stolen toyota carolla. inside the car they found the stolen urns and items.

4:30:00 p.m. pacific time in washington, d.c. there are a lot of things for the president to address. in the past 24 hours, nato has formerly taken control of this military mission in libya. also reports that rebel forces have been good about making end roads against moammar qaddafi over the weekend, taking control among other things, key oil production areas. the president will have to answer his critics that the white house hasn't informed congress about the role. >> i think the bigger question is the cost, obviously, that's something of concern on everybody in capitol hill. how he gets around that is a larger question going forward. >> hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars. >> exactly. >> reporter: so also ground forces the president will have to address tonight. the likelihood of american ground forces being used in the conflict in libya.

time now, 7:16, the consulate general of mexico will launch a campaign against human trafficking. it's called "one call can save your life". it's designed to raise awareness of a victim assistance program. the big announcement took place at 10:30 this morning on folsom street. this morning workers at napa stated hospital will hold a demonstration demanding safety improvements. the protest is being scheduled to coincide with a safety summit. the workers say instead of a meeting, they want basic safety measures implemented immediately. the demands follow the strangulation of a nurse by one of the patients last october. and also the sexual assault on a worker by a patient earlier this month. hoping that federal funding could be on the way after a second day of flooding over the weekend. a broken drainage pipe failed

today japanese officials said radiation from that damaged nuclear plant is spreading the sea water faster than originally thought. latest tests show the sea water closest to the plant has 1800 times normal levels of radiation. workers are pumping out the radiation. time now, 7:22 from japan this morning, a story of horror

and heroism as people return to a hospital devastated by the tsunami. the tsunami was four stories high and hospital nurses are haunted by memories of people screaming, people they could not move to the roof for rescue. they also remember the sacrifice of a hospital administrator who ran to get a satellite phone and threw it to the roof seconds before he was swallowed up by the tsunami. twelve patients and ten members of the staff are among the dead. here at home more than 150 cities will hold vigils for people of japan tonight. the san francisco vigil begins at 7:00 p.m. the vigil will call for an end to nuclear power. today, by the way, is the 32nd anniversary of the three mile island nuclear accident in pennsylvania. this morning crews in santa rosa get back to work in

a rain-soaked hillside is continuing to cause problems in san pablo this morning. it's a story we've been following since friday. jade hernandez has been at the scene all morning long and received an update from an official. >> reporter: that's right. they expect public works crews to be out here at this home later this morning. he didn't know what time but said they'd be monitoring the stability of the hillside around the home throughout the day. precautionary measures have already begun. we watched yesterday as six trees were cut down in order to protect surrounding homes. this morning we learned city officials will debrief staffers in about a half hour or so and will stay in contact by phone.

three homes in the area have been yellow tagged, one degree has been red tagged. the assistant city manager said the city will be touching base with the office of emergency services and non-profits today, which might be able to offer residents long-term help if displaced permanently. there's also a meeting on wednesday to discuss the history of the area and any information the city has obtained so far. >> there have been landslides in that area, whether they are connected or not, we're looking at that as a part of our search. >> reporter: two contra costa fire stations are on alert in case of emergency as well, the city of san pablo declared a state of emergency, its board of supervisors vote on it tuesday. in a half hour we'll touch base with the assistant city manager

survive. policies are put into place after a death of a student that was found dead of extreme malnutrition. it was determined she hadn't attended school in 15 months. they will make phone calls twice a week and visit homes with students housing extended absence. designed to discourage voters. they say the poll hints at misfunds and local teachers are highest-paid in the area. the all-male ballot takes place on may third. time now, 7:33. resume testimony against two other men accused of taking part in an attack.

questions. they want to know what happened, but so far no answers. the disney cruiseline came back with one person missing, that is 24 year old rebecca. she worked in the youth center and was last seen on tuesday. crews searched the entire ship and didn't find her. after the search on the ship, the mexico navy and coast guard searched the waters, i but the -- but the search turned up nothing. passengers say they were told about the missing crew member but other details are sketchy. disney released a statement saying they are doing everything possible to find her and are not giving up. they searched as early as saturday and everyone at disney cruiseline is distraught over this. the fbi has been notified. the ship is registered in the bahamas. some of the passengers were saying they heard on the ship

morning. after the explosion, what they did is brought in the atf and bomb squad from travis air force base and looked for other exmoded devices. they had to evacuate 50 homes. after finding no devices, everybody got to come back. they are still trying to determine the cause of the explosion, whether or not it was a pipe bomb or some other device. in the meantime, people began to suspect some of their free periodicals. >> why were you nervous because of the newspaper thing? >> we do it daily, pick up newspapers in our driveways. you think about what could happen if something could explode when you pick it up. >> reporter: so because of what happened yesterday, a couple of people out here said it made sense to them or they became leery of the free periodicals.

barry bonds to arrive. about 10 minutes ago we watched his attorney walk into the federal building. this is the second week of the trial, and it's expected orgeat going at 8:30 this morning. scheduled to testify this week is irs special agent, former giant's athletic trainer and kimberly bell who had a decade- long relationship with bonds. first as a girlfriend, later as a mistress when he remarried. bonds is on trial for lying to a grand jury. kimberly bell is supposed to tell the jury he admitted to her he was using illegal steroids. she's also expected to tell about changes in bonds. bonds defense attorneys are expected to suggest bell has her own motive for testifying. the defense is supposed to tell the jury about a financial dispute between the couple over a $100,000 payment for a house they shared in arizona.

weekend. a broken drainage pipe failed after all the heavy rainfall on saturday, sending a stream of water into a mobile home park and the village. it was the second failure in three days after the pipe ruptured thursday. there was declared a local state of emergency. that's the first step in seeking help from fema. in santa rosa, a homeless man could be facing charges after being caught with stolen urns containing human ashes. police made the discovery last thursday. they spotted the 37 year old with a stolen toyota corolla. he tried to run from the scene, but police captured and arrested him. inside the car they found the stolen urns as well as other items. the urns have since been returned to the proper family members. this morning, fremont police are looking for a shooting suspect considered armed and dangerous. this is a picture of 19 year

new this morning, the united nations is observing safety procedures in nuclear plants around the world. live in washington dc with the latest on the elevated radiation levels in japan. sandra? >> new this morning, more concerns surrounding the fukushima power plant. they have still not been able to stabilize the reactors there and officials there say the evacuation zone is still in effect. now, this is what we're talking about here. we're talking about the reactors and particularly of concern this morning is reactor two. officials say they have found radioactive measures in the water in a tunnel off of reactor two and that is causing high concern because they are finding the radioactivity is 100,000 times the normal levels they would find. certainly they want to pump the
