"mornings on 2" begins right now. -- we're jest getting word that there was an earthquake in greece, off one of the island. there's no word of any tsunami warnings, a 6.0 earthquake just struck off the greek island.

now to overnight news we've been following all morning. power has been restored in san francisco after thousands of customers were led in the dark. allie rasmus has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. pg&e says this happened because of underground equipment failure. there were 6600 people without power. now, you can see, this is no longer the case. everything out here is working just as normal. this is the intersection where this outage original flighted. we're at hayes and goff street in san francisco. earlier this morning, we watched pg&e crews as early:00 going to all of the manholes,

pulling up the covers, to see what was wrong. pg&e says this outage was caused by an underground equipment failure but they don't know why that equipment failed. one resident says he's glad the outage happened overnight and not during the day. >> fortunately, it wasn't as bad -- this is only what 1234 two, three hours -- only what? two, three hours? if it went a day, there would be serious problems. >> reporter: back here live, you can see traffic is moving slowly. this outage first started at 12:30. by 6:30, all of the power had been restored. at one point, 6600 customers were without power. the outage affected the hayes valley neighborhood, the laurel height, haight-ashbury, but again, as of a half hour ago all of the power is back on and things are back to normal. back to you. >> that's good news for a lot of people. thank you. also in san francisco,

southbound highway 101 is back open after a garbage truck fire shut it down overnight. the fire started just after 2:00 a.m. near the cesar chavez exit. sanfrancisco firefighters got the flames under control in about two hours. the truck was taken off the freeway just after 4:30 this morning. san francisco firefighters broke down a door to rescue a sleeping man from his burning house. now, we first showed you this story last night on the 10:00 news. the fire started before 10:15 on a home on teddy relative in visitation valley -- visitation valley. one man would lived in the house was asleep. he was treated for smoke inhalation. >> this is a perfect, what we call bread-and-butter operation. given the fact we were able to get here fast and have an idea of what's going on makes all of

the difference. >> it took firefighters 30 minutes to get it all under control. the fire started in the kitchen. the california/mexico worder was hit by an earthquake -- boredder was hit last night. it was centered near mexicali. it was almost a year ago when that same area was hit by the 7.2 quake where two people were killed. voters in six cities approved the sales tax hikes. tara moriarty is live in concord with -- telling us how shoppers are reacted. >> reporter: most stores where this tax increase are take effect are not open yet. but if you take a look at your receipt, you will notice the pennys add up. sales tax in six bay area cities, if you make a small

purchase you may not notice it, but not at car dealerships where you would spend a bigger amount of change. some say they will go online to shop or go to cities where the sales tax is lower. >> i won't shop like this anymore. if i have to go to hayward, fremont, that's what i will do. even oakland. barge. this one came to a dramatic end in sacramento. seven men were floating on the river on their raft yesterday, when they lost control. they capsized. three were thrown out. they held onto a tree. sacramento rescue came to help then. >> we were hanging on for dear life. >> they came out from the water, mudzy, they were scratched up, bruised. none of them were wearing life jackets. there are signs all along there about dangerous conditions along the river. authorities say if you are gonna go in there, wear a life jacket. here's what this area looks like live this morning, where the slides are. you can see the yellow tag there on the windows of one of

>> good luck to you. that's the -- naima and megia. thank you for joining us. the unemployment rate is down, at least slightly. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with details on who is hiring. >> reporter: tori, i just heard from an economic analyst who saw it good, solid news, the unemployment rate is down to a two-year row, down 8.8% from 8.9% the month before. the labor department says the economy added 216,000 jobs. now, most of those jobs were in the private sector, business,

welfare, hoss pittalty -- hospital ailty -- hospitality -- hospitality. time is 7:18. well, in japan, the operator of that damaged nuclear power plant has been found ground level. the radiation level, 10,000 times the normal. now there's concern that may spread to the water supply. we're also hearing that a u.s. recruiter is hiring american nuclear power plant workers to go to japan to help get that crisis under control. so far, several u.s. workers have signed up.

discharged. a board yesterday voted that he may serve out the remaining three years of his enlistment. he's been under investigation since 2009, when someone reported seeing a picture of him kissing another man. congress has repealed, don't ask, don't tell. they did that back in december. but it's not yet in effect and the board did not say whether that factored into their decision. the repeal on the ban of gays in the military is the subject of a hearing going on right now on capitol hill. pentagon officials are testifying about the implementation of the repeal. don't ask, don't tell will only be lifted once it is certified that it won't harm readiness and combat. we know today is april 1 -- april 1st, april fool's day. but sal's not fooling.

several cars are damaged in oakland this morning after a suspected drunk driver rammed into them. it all happened on foothill boulevard and havens court just after 9:00 p.m. take a look at the damage left behind. we're told the driver and two other people were taken to a hospital. but we don't know their condition. police tell us the vehicle, the suspect was driving, it was stolen. san francisco car owners are being warned to be on the lookout. car thefts and burglaries in the city are on the rise. 905 cars have been stolen in san francisco so far this year. that's 10% more than this time last year. car burglaries are also up 22% with more than 2500 break-ins. santarosa police say they've arrested two women who may be linked to at least eight vehicle robberies. in santa rosa, marin county and as far south as san mateo. officers found the women after noticing a stolen vehicle from oregon on mendocino avenue. they traced the honda to the

nearby gold coin hotel where the women were staying. they say the women were charged with eight counts of stolen property possession. 7:31. the marin county humane society investigating reports of animal cruelty. now, investigators believe several teenagers poisoned a dog with alcohol during a recent party in mill valley. the 15-year-old dog died. the teenagers apaintly gave the dog a deadly amount of liquor in their water bowl. no adults were presently -- were reportedly present at the party. witnesses are asked to come forward. 46-year-old young chi chu is accused of trying to molest a young girl. he was arrested. he worked as an i.t. technician for the menlo park city school district and

resigned about a month ago. an antioch teacher accused of inappropriately touching an 8th grade boy at park middle school has been found. it's believed that charles redmond headed for mexico after police opened an investigation. police say he was in mexico but crossed back over the worder this week and was arrested yesterday in san diego. now he's awaiting extradition back to antioch. a new study is highlighting the problem of teacher performance and how to determine who is doing a good job. according to a senior policy analyst for the national school board's association, 99% of the nation's teachers get a satisfactory stamp. he's recommending a comprehensive new evaluation system that includes several years of test scores, classroom -- classroom observation. critics are leery of including test scores saying they don't take into account that are not

given needed teaching materials like textbooks. san francisco's police chief is to firing back about continuing allegations of police misconduct. >> these kind of allegations of misconduct have been running rampant. bring these to us and we'll deal with it. >> jeff godown angrily disputed a tape that the officers lied about the search. the owner of a pleasanton am complex says they will make some safety changes after a toddler wandered away from his home. he crossed six lanes of traffic and then ended up in a walmart parking lot. he was reunited with his father

a few hours later. he was able to open the front door apartment, which is a low door for disabled individuals. a lot of rain last week combined with a failed drainage pipe led to two days of severe flooding in the santa cruz county community. the city has applied for state disaster aid. but that would only cover about 75% of the cost and federal help is not assured. damage is estimated at about $10 million. capitola isn't saying what steps it will take now that pg&e has publicly admitted it replaced several meters with smartmeters. capitola's city council voted

to ban those smartmeters. pg&e says it installed 17 smartmeters after customers reported the older meters were damaged in the recent flood. urban gardeners are stunned to learn about a hefty fine about a woman who raises vegetables, rabbits, goats and sometimes pigs. the city is ordering her to shut down or pay as much as a $6,000 fine without having a permit. consumer advocates say it's an interesting coincidence. the chp issued 2,000 more

lodge and say they are being unfairly targeted. the same family once owned a hotel which was a haven for prostitution. police laided the lana hotel in 2005 and sued the family for creating a public nuisance. the hotel was later torn down. an investigation found the owners knew about prostitution and knew about it by charging inflated rents to pimps and prostitutes. coming up -- why over 300 iconic buildings around the world, including san francisco city hall, will turn the color blue tonight. and what caused two very experienced sky drivers to fall to their death in southern california.

this is a fire in the 2500 block of myrtle. it's near mag yoelia -- magnolia. this is breaking news in oakland. we just happened to be flying over the coliseum. newschopper2 caught this fire. we're not sure if anyone is inside or injured. but firefighters are on the scene. they gave us the location at 2500 myrtle street -- or in that block there. as i pull it up on the map, it's near mcclimben's minipark, near a school and west grand and market are the closest biggest streets in the area.

their death. >> reporter: we can tell you that the cause is still under investigation by the ntsb and the ta -- faa. the sky divers had fallen to about 200 to 300 feet when this tragedy occurred. now, let's go back to yesterday afternoon, when this happened. the victims are 42-year-old pat mcgowan of mennynify -- menifee, california, and christopher davis tasky, also 42 and likewise an experienced skydiver. the two collided in midair about 200 feet to the ground. their can opys delated -- canopies deflated. all efforts to save their lives

worker, deborah madden, will be going back to court. she assisted in a fatal stabbing case. investigators say she's admitted stealing small amounts of cocaine from san francisco's crime lab. that led to the dismissal of hundreds of cases. governor brown has released reforms he would like to see made to california's public pension system. among other things, the governor wants to prohibit retroactive pension increases, stop the practice of spiking in which workers get, andston any employee convicted related to their employment. bob dutton publicly complained in a meeting with the governor, he was "yelled at more than

not as warm as yesterday and today. it turns out the sheep found dead in a napa county vineyard were not shot. they were killed by mountain lions. six people were found dead or missing. sheriff investigators first thought the wounds on the bodies of the sheep were bullet wounds. however, a federal trapper who looked at the remains now says a mountain lion did it. the snake that became a twitter sensation, back in her cage this morning but maybe not for long. as we reported dread, officials at the -- yesterday, officials at the zoo reported the someone claiming to be the cobra gained 200,000 followers. now the cobra is planning another escape. the same day that cobra

just a short time ago, a big earthquake rocked the southern island of crete. buildings shook as far away as cairo, egypt. the preliminary magnitude is from 5.9 to 6-point. we haven't heard of damage or injuries yet the there's been no tsunami warnings about this. greece, as you know is one of the world's most earthquake- prone nations but fates and serious -- fatalities and serious injuries are rare. back here at home, the power is back on in san francisco after more than 6,000 customers spent several hours in the dark. the power went out. pg&e told us, the outage started at hayes and goff. nearly 6700 customers had no power at the height of the outage. it started about 1:30 this morning. it affected stoplights in the hayes valley and haight-ashbury

8:0. we're following developing -- 8:30. we're following developing news. firefighters are still spotting a fire on myrtle street. ktvu's kraig debro just arrived there. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this is 26th and myrtle. firefighters are in the middle of their otherhaul stage. the fire -- over haul stage. the newschopper2 got some pretty good shots from up above with smoke billowing out of the building. i saw somebody who lives in the building. they told me there's four units in this particular house, that the people in the four units got okay. but it started in the lower right unit. the battalion chief says possibly on the porch or right inside. jumped inside or outside depending upon where it started. everybody in the house got out okay.

women after noticing a stolen vehicle from oregon on mendocino avenue. they traced the car. it was a honda, to the nearby gold own hotel where the women were staying. they say the women were charged with eight counts of stolen property possession. the marin county humane society is investigating reports of animal cruelty. investigators believe several teenagers poisoned a dog with alcohol during a recent party in mill valley. the teenagers reportedly gave the teenagers a deadly amount of liquor in the water bowl. witnesses are urged to step forward. this morning a former school worker is in the san mateo county jail phase face -- facing a dozen charges of lewd behavior. the 46-year-old man is accused of trying to seduce a 10-year- old girl. he was arrested in his san carlos home, after getting calls from the girl's parents.
