this afternoon. this morning. we'll show you some videotape of the search that went on for almost six years. what happened was that the mother told her other son that she was going to go shopping but said she was not taking the 3-year-old with her. when the son came out to the garage where his brother was, he was gone. he was missing. turns out the mother's cell phone wasn't working so they spent all this time trying to find the little boy, someone finally said you know he the mother likes to go shopping at the wal-mart, police went and stake out the wal-mart, they found mother and son. they're safe. so a happy ending to the story, one message here is communicate with your family if you're going to take a child somewhere. let them know where you're going. so again, a happy ending, 3-year-old missing in san jose has been found safe and he's coming home. a woman from oakland is recovering from what police describe as a 15 hour nightmare.

police say she was kidnapped by her exboyfriend. police say 42-year-old marco velasques bet here and threw her into the trunk of a car and drove her to the mexico. >> she was able to talk to the suspect through the trunk of the vehicle and she was very brave, and she continued to engage him in conversation and eventually convinced him to take her to a hospital. >> police arrested him in the hospital waiting room. he is now facing at least nine felonies. a santa cruz man is this critical condition, 42-year-old brian stowe. he was in a medically induced

coma. two dodgers fans attacked him in the parking lot after the game. and ktvu crews are heading to get more on the story and we'll have the report for you tonight on the 10:00 news. firefighters say it is a wake up call. two house fires in contracosta county, in both instances, the homeowners were not alerted by smoke detecters. >> investigators want to stress the importance of having smoke detecters in your home. a good samaritan was able to pull three women out of this burning home, police believe had it been installed with smoke detecters they might have made it out on their own. >> this is devastating. >> today was the first time dan saw the inside of the home that

just days ago was engulfed in flames. investigators say just before 3 saturday morning, they got a call of a house fire. investigators say the fire started in the kitchen, all the while three women were upstairs asleep. >> that they made it to the front door, unfortunately by that time the smoke inhalation had caused them to become disoriented. >> had she not unlocked that door i was going to kick it in. >> he was leaving his friend's home across the street when he saw the fire. >> i was banging on the door, finally somebody unlocked it. when they opened it up, smoke came out, it was overwhelming. >> that didn't stop him. >> i said where are you, i just reached in and grabbed her and brought her out to here. >> that's when he asked if there was anyone else inside and she said yes. >> i grabbed her shoulder and drug her out to here. and that's when i realized the 90-year-old lady was wrapped around her leg.

>> all three were treated for their injuries. the fire caused $70,000 of damage but investigators say a lot of it could have been preempted if the homeowners had installed this device. >> the damage to have fire could have been confined to that kitchen had there been smoke detecters. >> today members of fire prevention went door to door handing out pamphlets on fire safety. investigators recommend that you have a work fire device in your home. live in pittsburgh. >> state appeals court today blocked a lawsuit from a san francisco teenager who was stabbed by a parolee the day after his release in 2007. scott thomas was convicted of stabbing two people out say a bakery. he filed a lawsuit against the state claiming thomas was released improperly. the appeals court today upheld a lower court's ruling that the state is not responsible for the actions of parolees. the city of santa rosa has

collected a is $1 million judgment of the owners of a motel that was found to be a house of prostitution. the motel has since been torn down. the city sued the patel family in 2005 charging inflated room rates to pimps and prostitutes. capitola village is back in business. this is what it looked like last saturday when flood waters washed out businesses. life now with how stores are trying to attract customers back. >> we were in the village on monday, i can tell you it looks much better after a week has passed. there's not any garbage or debee on the streets or sidewalks and many of the stores are back open. it was a perfect beach day. >> i think they're doing a great

recovery. i was very pleasantly surprised how nice it looks already. >> reporter: while there are still people cleaning up many stores opened for business today for the first time in a week. >> i had no income coming in and i said that's it, it doesn't look good but i'm going to open the doors and see if people will come in and it's been good. >> inside the clothing store the carpet has been ripped out and a fan is ventilating wet areas. but the owner is making light of her situation by advertising a no more flood sale. >> i figure people would like a good deal and come to the village because they're curious to see. i want make sure they will come in. >> reporter: merchants are taking advantage of the free tent provided by the city. they're setting up shop temporarily so they can continue selling. so far store owners say business has been good. >> the people who are coming by, they want to give extra money just to help out, i'm saying no we're not asking for donations, they say we just want to help

out. >> reporter: the city has put up banners throughout the village world cupping customers back and checking in with businesses to see how they can help. the chamber of commerce is setting up a relief fund. some people are donating some of their revenue to that fund. a few miles north in scots valley crews hope to finish a temporary road tomorrow around a massive land slide there. residents of 8 houses have been unable to drive to and from their homes since the mud slide took out part of their road last week. a geologist has been called in to help crews determine how best to permanently repair the road. in sacramento, governor brown's proposals don't seem to be sitting well on either side. among other things, the governor wants to stop retroactive pension increases. >> all of them can be done with

collective bargaining, that's really our issue. we need to sit down at the table, each affected group, see what's best for everyone. >> republicans don't think the reforms go far enough and right now budgeted talks remain stalled. the sales tax in some cities went up today, the sales tax in union city is now 10 and a quarter percent. among the highest in the bay area. a big change for regular muni riders, after 37 years, fast pass users are now paying with plastic. live now in san francisco with the changes. >> today is the last day, last work day for the fast pass. from now on it's all about the

clipper card. >> at the customer service center today, many people were switching over. >> put that card into the scanner. >> so when you go on the card, the bus, you just go beep then you have your monthly in there. >> many people seem to have the new system down, others had problems. >> it was just confusing. >> how so? >> the card sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. >> reporter: this is the april adult fast pass, it was printed but will not be sold. uni will still offer youth passes but only until june. about 150,000 passengers purchased adult fast passes each month which allowed unlimited rides for $60. now riders must use this, a clipper card which is good for use on bart and other public transportation. under the system, passengers put money in their account and each ride is debited when the card is scanned. >> if you had the card and it

doesn't work you might have -- if you didn't have money you can't get on the bus. so i like the fast pass better because it's not electronic. >> clipper is more convenient, now that other public interestings are allowing it. >> buses still accept money though occasional riders won't need a card. >> once they do it once or twice, they understand it more and it becomes easier and we've seen that throughout the system. >> reporter: it appears that the test will become -- will common day. the highway patrol released new figures showing the number of tickets it writes jumped 8% between 2009 and 2009. the fines add millions of dollars to the state's general fund. officers do not write tickets simply to generate revenue,

others say the state writes tickets just to generate money. >> when you are standing at a corner and you see it flash, that's another 500 bucks. >> officers say they're actually writing fewer speeding tickets and stopped tuinal violations. >> two bay area schooling found out today they are in the running to be hosts of next year's presidential debate. saint mary's college talked about hosting a debate last year. and dominican university which hosted the debate between jerry brown has also applied to host the debate. ktvu was there for first of its kind surgery on the west coast. to save not one but lives all part of a unique organ transplant chain. treasure island, the unique

we have breaking news from san francisco's ocean beach. at this hour the coast guard is searching for a missing surfer. a woman on shore reported the woman missing shortly after 5 this evening. right now the coast guard is searching at this hour, we are monitoring the situation, and we will update you on any new information comes out. a gay sailor will be allowed to serve out his enlistment. under the military's don't ask don't tell policy. he is just one of a handful of

service members subject to such investigation since congress voted to repeal don't ask don't tell in december. the policy is expected to be phased out sometime this year. a bill meant to deter bullying of gay and lesbian students has cleared a legislate i have hurdle. the bill now heads to the full assembly for a vote. before the great san francisco earthquake, napa and sonoma wines were actually made in the city to be close to land, rail and ship lines. ktvu consumer editor tom shows us how that history is taking root again. this time on treasure island where there is a budding wine industry. >> reporter: just six months old, the winiery will produce 5,000 casings of wine a year. itscellar is in a hangar.

nearly 57 points. another gorgeous day around the bay area but it could be changing very quickly. let's check in for the weekend forecast. bill. >> it is changing a little bit out there. got clouds increasing thousand and a cool down for the weekend but not before we saw another record today in san jose, 84 degrees. clouds outside. still warm, though. 65 degrees, that's the san francisco airport. over towards oakland at the airport, 68 degrees and we head into your nice looking bay area weekend. early year we talked about the chance for showers on saturday. these are the highing from today. highs tomorrow will be cooler because as those clouds come in, they're going to cool things off. but as far as rain, it would be light, if any, maybe drizzle. computer models aren't talking about rain anymore. mainly about increasing clouds and cooler highs.

so don't cancel your plans, just be aware there could be a sprinkle here and there. the best bet would be on the coast. uncreaseing clouds tonight, we're seeing that. here comes the system, it's very weak, it's that time of year -- if this was last month, this is a very weak system. might be some snow flurries in the mountains. the computer model somehow clouds. 11:00 tonight mostly cloudy. then here's the bag end of the front. still no rain. this is where, right at the front typically where you will have the strongest dynamics. at this point the model says that's not going to many what. i suspect right along the coast you will get that kind of drizzle. weekend is fine, maybe sprinkles tomorrow morning, sunday is the

we all know baseball is a game of statistics, usually about players. well facebook recently applied some of the same sorts of measures to fans. they found a's fans are more likely to be young, single. a's fans are the friendliest. we probably already knew that. a's fans are all charged up, it's the season opener for them. we're here to start with the a's. >> it's all about oakland today. on paper a lot of people saying

the a's have a real good chance to win the western division this year out right. so far in spring training been one of their worst ever as far as wins and losses. see if they can turn it around now that it's the real deal. the latest on opening night from fred. >> we're about 40 minutes away from the opening pitch. this is the 44th year that the a's have opened up at oakland and it is their sixth straight opening losses now they're concerned about. they haven't won an opening day since 2004 but a brand new three, four and five hitter can help snap that streak. they expect 35,000 tonight. a full japanese media blitz is on. sure to add some punch to the
