planes are grounded and the flight cancellations are piling up at oakland international airport. how this all relates to a problem on a southwest airlines plane yesterday. >> a giants fan is brutally attacked after cheering his team on in los angeles. the new information police have released about the two men believed to be responsible. afternoon. temperatures are going to take a big tumble. at this hour mostly gray skies and mild conditions. we'll take a look at current conditions coming up. good morning, thanks for waking up with us. welcome to mornings on 2. >> it is saturday, april 2nd. i was kind of getting used to the record setting hot weather, but now we're finding out things will cool off a bit. we'll talk about our forecast.
8:01 am
>> yes, good morning to you. big changes in store. we're saying farewell to that summer-like weather at least for now. our temperatures are going to be quite cooler. take a look at what's going on this morning. we're waking up with the cloud cover. in addition to that, the system bringing us the clouds will help increase our winds. not too bad around the bay area. we are a little gusty, the east bay reporting about 15 miles per hour. our south bay locations reporting winds at 5 to 10 miles per hour. if i slide off the coast, those gusts are reaching 39, 40 miles per hour in some locations. we'll take a look at our radar in just a few moments. we'll take a look at those afternoon highs coming up. we begin with what passengers on a southwest flight are calling a terrifying experience. passengers are now describing what it was like on board when a hole erupted in the plane's roof forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing. it happened yesterday during a
8:02 am
flight from phoenix to sacramento. you're looking at the hole in the roof. that hole estimated to be at least three feet long. passengers say flight attendants had just taken drink orders when they all heard a loud boom. >> it sounded like a shot and a lot of air deexpressing -- decompressing, it was quick and it was scary. >> when it first happened i grabbed the guy's hand next to me, and i held his hand and tried to not think about the woman screaming a couple rows back. >> the plane dropped from 36,000 feet to about 11,000 feet in just a matter of minutes. it did cause some people to pass out, but fortunately none of the 118 passengers was seriously hurt. the plane landed at a military base in arizona in yuma before another plane got there and took those passengers back to sacramento. investigation is under way to determine a cause. southwest is promising inspections on all its boeing

737's. that's expected to take several days. we're live now at oakland international airport this morning. >> reporter: hi, yes, bay area flights are being affected, especially here at oakland airport. southwest airlines and faa inspectors are grounding and inspecting 81 planes in the southwest fleet. right now in front of the southwest terminal here at oakland airport, there's a long line of passengers waiting to check into their flights. some of these travelers could face delays and cancellations because of that mass inspection process you were talking about. at least two of the grounded planes are here at oakland airport. they're being inspected right now, two of the 81 planes in the fleet. we just checked the info board. at least 14 flights scheduled to depart oakland airport this morning have been cancelled. some arrivals have also been cancelled and there could be more cancellations and delays as the day goes on. some of the passengers on those cancelled flights told us that southwest personnel told them their flights were cancelled
8:04 am
because of the inspections happening today. >> i would appreciate them inspecting the planes, i'd rather that than see a hole in my plane or whatever, but just to find out at 5:00 am or 6:00 am when we got here was a real bummer. >> i'm glad that they're taking them out and looking at them. i think that's more important than a little inconvenience on our part. >> reporter: and this is the reason why the southwest airlines planes are being grounded and inspected. yesterday a hole ruptured in the fuselage of a southwest boeing 737 while on its way from phoenix to sacramento. the plane landed safely, but southwest airlines is inspecting all of their boeing 737's, and they have 81, to make sure other planes don't have the same problem. this problem of cancellations and delays isn't just limited to oakland airport. we just checked in with san jose airport, there are 12 cancellations there. so this is having an impact on several bay area airports.
8:05 am
