i'm tara moriarty live in redwood city where a mother narrowly escaped a fire with her children this morning. we'll tell you how they escaped coming up. it happened just two hours ago. the announcement president obama made in a special video overnight. the wreckage of a fatal plane crash still sits near the oakland airport this morning. the new information we just learned within the past 40 minutes. and this morning the troubles continue for southwest airlines as more planes are inspected. it's all ahead here on the ktvu

morning news. good morning. thank you for joining us. it's monday april 4th. i'm pam cook. the weather's been gorgeous. what sit like today? steve paulson is here to tell us. gorgeous. yes. looks good today. temperatures starting off upper 40s, mid-40s, low 40s. little chill in the air. 60s coast, bay. mid-70s for some. many pushing upper 7 0z. morgan hill at 77. let's get to the whos now with pam. thank you, steve. in redwood city overnight a mother and five children escaped an overnight fire. firefighters say came very close to being deadly. ktvu's tara moriarty is in redwood city this morning with more on how this family got out safely. good morning, tara. >> reporter: call it mother's intuition. a mother sleeping inside of

this mobile home with her children woke up for apparently no reason. the smoke detectors either she did not hear them or they didn't function, so she ended up waking up and you can see just how intense this fire got. if you look to the side of this mobile home right here you can see where the flames got to it right there on the home next door. now it happened here in the harbor village home mobile home park off bay shore road in redwood city around 2:00 this morning. here's what happened. the mom wakes up. she's not sure if she smells smoke or having a bad dream, but she starts looking around and sees flames near her washer and drier in the front of the house. when she tries to run back to the bedroom to get the kids the fire is simply too intense. so she yelled and that wakes up her 17-year-old who was able to help the other children escape through windows and a door. >> the 17-year-old really helped get his siblings and friend out. pretty dramatic stuff. and pretty level headed

thinking for a 17-year-old boy. >> reporter: now the mother has four children and also there was a friend, a child friend, staying at the home as well. they range in age from 7 to 17 years old. and the firefighters are calling the 17-year-old who helped all of those kids escape a hero. we have no cause yet of this fire. but, again, what we do know is that the point of origin could have been near the drier. we also have no estimate in damages, but as you can see this home is pretty much gutted. and the family is right now staying with another friend. red cross is also assisting as well as some firefighters here. live in redwood city, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. just two hours ago president obama announced his plans to run for re-election. the announcement was made via a text message and a web video to supporters. reportedly the president's campaign team will file the papers with the federal election commission today. that allows the campaign to open re-election offices and start raising money for the

2012 election. this morning federal investigators will try to determine the cause of a deadly plane crash in alameda. the single engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from oakland international airport yesterday afternoon. that pilot was killed. he was the only person on board and witnesses say he made a brave move to avoid hitting the several people standing on the shore. >> he obviously did everything he could do to keep the airplane away from people and ended up with him going in nose first. >> just one hour ago the coroner identified the pilot. he is 73-year-old richard manuel of redwood city. ktvu's kraig debro is at the crash scene. he'll have a live update at 5:00 . southwest airlines will continue inspecting its fleet of boeing 737s after the announcement that tiny cracks were found on three of its planes. the cracks are similar to the ones that forced the southwest

jet to make an emergency landing in arizona on friday. 118 people were on the sacramento bound flight when the fuel sill lodge ruptured leaving a five foot tear and causing cab into lose pressure. those inspections will delay southwest flights around the country for a third day in a row. today the airline says 100 flights nationwide will have to be canceled. so far this morning 14 arriving and departing flights at oakland will have to be canceled. >> i think it's always scary. but at the same time i think it's appropriate to delay them and take all the precautions you can to make sure that everybody's safe. >> southwest flight schedule could be back to normal by tomorrow. that's when the airline says it should be done with those inspections. well, another southwest flight that took off from the bay area had to make an emergency landing. that flight from oakland to san diego landed safely in los angeles last night. that's after reports of an

electrical burning smell in the plane's cabin. 142 people were on board. no one was hurt. that emergency landing is said to be unrelated to the cracks that forced friday's landing in arizona. well, there's a $10,000 reward being offered this morning in connection to that attack on a san francisco giants fan outside dodgers stadium. 42-year-old bryan stowe was badly beaten thursday night and remains in a medically induced coma in a los angeles hospital. now a fund has been set up to help pay his medical bills. no one has been arrested in the attack. but los angeles police have released these composite sketches of the two suspects. city leaders from los angeles and san francisco along with the dodgers and giants released a statement condemning the attack. it reads in part "this attack is unconscionable behavior that will not be tolerated in either of our ballparks or in either

of our cities." they also say that once apprehended the attackers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. today the federal government will launch a major new program to repair and replace old gas and oil pipelines. it comes in response to two recent catastrophes 3,000 miles apart. now the u.s. transportation secretary will make the announcement in eastern pennsylvania where five people died in a pipeline explosion in february. that was five months after the pipeline disaster in san bruno that killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. a public hearing is scheduled for tomorrow in san bruno for public comments on natural gas pipeline safety plans. the california public utilities commission expects a large crowd at the five hour hearing. among the proposals the p.u.c. is considering automatic shutoff valves, better inspection techniques, the

replacement of aging pipes and improvements in recordkeeping. well, in capitol will businesses are hoping to bounce back following two natural disaster. warm weather helped draw out people over the weekend, but restaurants and shops are still hurting. and last month's tsunami in the santa cruz harbor and recent flooding there drained the budget of the local red cross. one woman who was displaced by flooding says the agency has been a big help. >> they sent out counselors for mental health here and they have sent out water for us. they've sent out food. they've did all kinds of things to help us in their behalf. >> more than a dozen people are still staying at a hotel with help from the red cross. several california harbors were hit hard by that tsunami surge last month. coming up in just about eight minutes we have the new estimates about the cost of the damages. well, keep your eyes on the road. a month long campaign starts

today targeting distracted drivers in the bay area. despite the state hands free cell phone law, it is easy to spot drivers talking or texting behind the wheel still. the california highway patrol says both are dangerous. now we talked to one driver who says it's a hard habit to break. >> i do know it's not a safe thing. i just -- it's just a habit and it's work. and i find that i do my work while i'm driving. >> the senator who wrote the hands free law says he wants to make the law even tougher. right now the first offense costs $20. he wants to make that $50. part of interstate 580 and two busy onramps in oakland are expected to reopen in just about 20 minutes. now cal trans closed the two right lanes on the westbound side between park boulevard and lake shore drive at 10:00 last night. the westbound onramps at park boulevard and excelsior streets are also shut down. the closures are needed so that

highway 17. and traffic in the south bay is off to a good start. the monday forecast, let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you. we have mostly clear skies. little ban going by but no big deal. system is staying way to the north. and temperatures kind of cooled off. that cooler air mass come in on the weekend settled in on sunday and it's giving us a lot of 40s right now. temperatures though will start to rebound as we see the wind turn westerly now but should turn northerly later on. few locations with a light easterly or northeasterly component. 44 livermore. 44 santa rosa. 46 san raphael. and then low 50s san francisco. 52 oakland at 50. band of high clouds once that moves out it will be mostly sunny. storm track stays north at least for now. but there's a system digging down. you can start to see the leading edge of it. looks like it's going to play into our weather on wednesday and thursday as temperatures go way down. but today they'll be a little warmer. a pleasant monday.

good morning. we have about 40s around. mostly clear skies. end up with a mostly sunny and warmer day. 60s closer to the beaches. low to mid-70s elsewhere as temperatures come up a bit. the u.s. has agreed to a nato request to continue air strikes in libya through the end of today. the u.s. was scheduled to hand over that role to britain, france and other nato allies yesterday. now meantime a turkish hospital ship picked up 250 wounded people from a city that has seen heavy fighting between government troops and rebels. the ship had to leave hundreds behind on the dock begging to be evacuated. this morning the operator of that damaged nuclear plant in japan says it is going to release more than 11,000 tons of water contaminated with a low level of radiation into the pacific ocean.

tokyo electric power says it has to do this in order to free up storage space for water that has even higher levels of radioactivity. the water said to be released is said to be 100 times more radioactive than legal limits. here in california the damage estimates are rising after last month's tsunami surge. the california emergency management agency says as of this weekend the statewide damage estimate rose $4 million to $48 million. disaster declaration from president obama could make about $25 million in federal aid available. harbors in crescent city, fort brag and santa cruz were the hardest hit by the waves and surges caused by that earthquake in japan. nearly one year after the gulf oil spill bp wants to resume drilling in the gulf of mexico. the giant oil company is asking to be allowed to go back to drilling ten development wells it had already started when the deep water horizon exploded

last april. b.p. says it hopes an agreement can be worked out in the next month. supporters say the moratorium that was imposed on deep water drilling after the gulf oil spill is driving up energy prices. >> we need to develop more leases. but also once a company has a lease we need to let them produce. >> bp officials say they will give government regulators 24 hour access to the company's drilling operations in the gulf. but critics say that's not enough. and the government needs to wrap up its investigation of the accident before approving any new drilling by bp. prosecution testimony is expected to wrap up today when the barry bonds perjury trial resumes. drug testing expert will be on the witness stand once again. the jury will also hear a transcript of part of bonds' federal grand jury testimony from 2003 when he said he never knowingly used performance

enhancing drugs. now aft prosecution testimony ends, the defense will begin its case. testimony resumes today in the trial of two men charged with killing oakland journalist chauncey bailey. the trial was delayed last week because of a sick juror. but saturday pleaded guilty to van meter for killing bailey is expected to continue his testimony this morning. last week he testified the defendant, the leader of the former your black muslim bakery, ordered him to kill bailey to prevent the journalist from writing an article about the bakery's financial problems. the sanity phase of the trial against the san mateo teenager accused in a pipe bomb attack at his high school begins today. last week jurors convicted the 18-year-old on six of seven counts but deadlocked on one. now investigators say he planned to kill two staff members during the attack at hillsdale high school two years

ago. prosecutors have dismissed his insanity defense and say the teen was responsible for his actions. oakland police say they now know who they're looking for after a deadly shooting over the weekend. police say this man, 34-year- old douglas yim fatally shot a man about 1:30 saturday evening. that shooting took place at yim's home at hair yet and virginia avenues. he shot the men with a rifle. they have not yet released any information about the motive. he was last seen driving a silver 2009 honda civic with the california license plate 6hwu861. anyone who sees that suspect or has any information should call police. well, a deadly shooting at a party near palm springs sparks retaliation. how one of the shooters was killed a short time later. plus new information on the

welcome back to the morning news. two people are dead. three people are in the hospital after a violent night near palm springs. it happened yesterday in cathedral city. police say two brothers showed up at a party and shot three people, one died. later the two brothers were walking home when police say someone ran them over with a car before shooting them. one of the brothers died at the hospital. no word this morning on the motive for the shootings. san francisco transit leaders will meet tomorrow. they'll meet to try to determine what's behind muni's recent dip in on time performance. new figures show muni buses were on schedule 71% of the time during the final three

mountain view 50 oakland. 46 san raphael. 46 also at redwood city. 44 by 7:00 a.m. and then 64 at noon. go for a high today of 72 with lots of sunshine. and you can see why. everything's taking aim to the north. but the key will be very cold dynamic system. it won't hold a lot of moisture but it will give us cold air starting on wednesday and carrying right into thursday and friday. again, today and tomorrow all right. after that we'll start to see much cooler conditions. today though the warmer weather's arrived. high pressure's decided to settle in. but it's not going to hang around. it will be transitory and then we'll see temperatures just drop off the table as we head towards wednesday and also thursday. again, temperatures could go from the 70s to the upper 50s by thursday on the high side. looks very nice today. sunny, warmer, it is a little chilly out there in the morning. temperatures 60s and 70s. morgan hill 77. antioch 77. santa rosa 76. that's the spirit. 72 oakland. 68 san francisco.

72 san mateo. warmer today and mostly sunny tuesday. clouding up on wednesday. cooler. much cooler on thursday with rain. not heavy rain. carry that into friday. weekend looks good but very chilly saturday morning. >> wow. thank you, steve. well, today is the 43rd anniversary of martin luther king, jr.'s assassination. in honor of the civil rights leader events will be held across the country today to show solidarity with workers and rally for union rights. one of those events is a march across the bridge. hundreds of people are expected to start on both sides of the bridge and meet in the middle. in redwood city, workers and community members will rally in courthouse square at 5:45 tonight. local elected officials and community members are expected to speak at the rallies. some oakland teachers will also take action today to oppose cuts to education. the teachers union is organizing early morning pickets at several major intersections in oakland starting at 7:00 this morning.
