good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, april 4th. we begin with developing news out of new orleans. a flight bound for san francisco this morning was forced to turn around just after take-off because of smoke in the cockpit. these are live pictures of the plane on the tarmac, passengers evacuated the plane using the emergency chute. no one was hurt. this is united flight 497. it was due to arrive from new orleans in san francisco just after 9:30 this morning. they are now expected about 3:30 this afternoon. it's still not known what --

into the known why. no one's hit. we're learning more about a plane crash here. kraig debro is live with more. >> reporter: we're being kept back by police who say ntsb investigators are on their way to conduct reviews. this man was an experienced pilot. according to witnesses, he may not have been at fault.

others are speculating that manual was trying to gain speed to get out of the stall. one who knew him says he loved to fly and help others. >> he was the type of person that would go out of his way to help somebody. >> reporter: friends say he was the president of a flying club and had a passion for ush flying. i'm not able to get much information on the type of the plane yet. it seats five. manual was the only one on board. the faa was out here yesterday. the ntsb will now take over this information, find out the cause of the crash. reporting live in alameda,

was on its way back to california -- from phoenix and was on its way back to california. as of yesterday, 19 southwest planes have been inspected and returned to service. it's now being reported small cracks were found in three planes. the matter has been turned over to the ntsb. travelers this morning are sticking by southwest, though, and their gut instincts about flying in general. >> we've been flying on southwest forever. no problems. there's been no problems. >> i've flown southwest for 25 years. >> reporter: any problems? >> no. >> it's still the safest way to travel. we're going with the odd. >> reporter: flights were cancelled yesterday.

altogether, eight departure flights have been cancelled. one arrival has been cancelled. ns were going to be -- inspections were supposed to be done by tomorrow. back to you. >> thank you, jade. what led a flight that off right here in the bay area to make an emergency landing in southern california? and in redwood city, a mother and five children safely escaped a fire that destroyed their home. it happened just five hours ago in the harbor village mobile home. the mother was screaming and that woke up her son who helped get the other children out. the red cross is now helping them find a place to stay. firefighters say it appears the fire was an accident and started near a dryer.

at least a dozen people face charges for illegal cock fighting. authorities found thoses of dead roosters at the scene. when they arrived, people fled. those caught could face animal cruelty charges. two people are recovering this morning after a highway patrol officer crashed into their car. it happened in fremont. the chp officer was in the middle of a high-speed chase with a motorcycle, when it ran a red light and smashed into a honda accord. that honda spun out of control and then hit a lexus. two people in the honda had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries. keep your focus on the road. that's the message from the chp and other law enforcement agencies. they are kicking off a campaign today, they are focusing on

breeze. here comes the system on wednesday. a big cooldown with light rain on thursday into friday. but look at the lows, they will plunge. the weekend will be sunny and warmer after a very chilly start. a new environmental concern to tell you about because of compact floressent light bullens -- fluorescent light bulbs. according to a report, a small percentage recycles them. those bulbs are ending up in landfall -- landfills. the special reason that president obama is choosing today to launch his reelection bid. and the plan being launched by two of moammar gadhafi's sons to push their father from libya.

president obama officially launches his reelection bid today. alison burns is live with more, including why the president chose today to make the announcement. >> reporter: tori, it's the fourth day of the fourth month, symbolic fork the 44th president -- for the 44th president. the team launched this on barack obama.com. president obama is not in it. but you see people across the country making a pitch for others to get motivated and get involved in the campaign. >> i don't agree with obama. but i respect him and i trust him. >> reporter: president obama has no public events on his schedule today. he will officially file with the federal election commission. he's sending out tweets and fund-raising e-mails this morning and he holds his first major fund-raiser in chicago in

less than two weeks. the campaign's goal is to raise $1 billion. now, two of the president's potential republican challengers are responding to him on twitter this morning. i'll have more on that for you during my next update in about an hour. alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:16. well, the united states has agreed to a nato request to continue those air strikes in libya through the end of today. now, the u.s. was scheduled to hand over that role to britain, france and other nato allies yesterday. meantime, u.s. lawmakers say they want to know more about the rebels fighting against moammar gadhafi's forces before giving them weapons. there's some concern there could be members of al qaeda amongst those rebel forces. we're also learning about moves to resolve the conflict.

"the new york times" is reporting that two of gadhafi's sons are proposing a solution that could push their father aside to make room for a democracy. 7:17. in yemen today, six anti- government protesters were killed and more than 30 wounded. witnesses say thousands of protesters were marching toward the main square in the southern city of yemen, when sold yers on the street and -- soldiers on the street and roof chanted. u.s. citizens are urging -- are urged to postpone nonessential travel to syria and family members of u.s. government workers in syria are authorized to leave the country.

7:18. well, tomorrow, contra costa county supervisors will debate the safety of new wind turbines. the board will talk about changing the rules for wind turbines for the first time since 1985. there are proposals to change other turbines with 3 new one that would be up to -- that could be up to 400 feet tall. sonoma county will soon decide whether to allow a power plant that runs on manure to be built. this is being proposed for a six-acre site in sonoma. it would use the waste from local egg farms to provide methane gas and that would provide gas to 21 homes. they will discuss this on april 19th at the council meeting.

santa cruz county takes the top spot as the california county doing the most to promote good health. according to wisconsin's health- ranking project, good favor includes, fewer smokers, fewer treen pregnancies, fatal car crashes and less obesity. there are fewer people dying before age 75 and fewer low birth weight babies. the santa clara sheriff's department could take over security at valley medical center in san jose under a proposal being considered this week. right now, civilians manage the hospital's private security staff. but tomorrow, county supervisors would consider a plan that would shift power to a sheriff's lieutenant and sergeant. supporters say the change will help improve response times and help the office address other public safety issues.

warmest of the week, complete reversal of last week. wednesday much cooler weather moves in. highs will be in the 50s. today it's sunshine o plenty. and temperatures in the beaches, upper, mid 70s around the bay. thursday, look at the lows. the good news, this weekend will be all right. it just won't be very warm saturday morning. 7:25. 11,000 tons of low-level contaminated water will be released into the pacific ocean by the operators of that damaged japanese nuclear plant. tokyo electric power says it has to do this in order to free up storage space for water that's even more contaminated with radiation. the water to be released into the pacific is about 100 times more radioactive than legal

limits. so far, workers still have not been able to plug up a big crack in the plant. it's dumping seven tons of highly radioactive water into the pacific every hour. the water leaking out of that crack contains about 10,000 times the normal level of radioactivity. one man is dead after failing off his motorbike at the fair yesterday. the 50-year-old man was riding along the course when he tipped over and fell off. witnesses and firefighters tried to perform cpr but they could not revive him. well, some passengers flying southwest airplanes. you are facing more cancellations today. we'll take you live to the city where the plane as troubles all began. barry bonds is due no court in about 30 minutes. prosecutors could wrap up their

now there's a diesel spill. this truck is gonna be there for a while. it's too damaged to move it. this will delay traffic coming out of castro valley. developing news out of new orleans. a flight bound for san francisco this morning was forced to turn around just after takeoff because of smoke in the cockpit. these are live pictures now of that particular plane. passengers evacuated the plane using the emergency chute. no one was hurt. united flight 497 was due to arrive from new orleans into san francisco just after 9:30 this morning, about two hours from now. obviously, that's changed. they are now expected around 3:30 this afternoon. this morning, federal investigators want to know the cause of a deadly plane crash in alameda. it was a single-engine plane.

it crashed shortly after take- off yesterday afternoon. you see it there. the pilot was killed. he was the only person on board. witnesses say he made a brave attempt. he obviously did everything he could do to keep the airplane away from people. it ended up with him going in nose first. >> a couple of hours ago, the coroner identified the pilot of richard emanuel. kraig debro is there. he will be back with an update at 8:00. the two men accused of attacking a giants' fan are still on the loose. brian stol was badly beaten after being -- after the game. and there's a reward leading to

the capture of the men responsible. you are looking at sketches there. time now, 7:31. the suspect in a deadly weekend shooting is still on the loose this morning. police say this man, 31-year- old douglas yep fatally shot one -- yim fatally shot one man. it happened at yim's home and police sacrum shot the men with a -- police say i'm shot the men with a rifle. he was last seen driving a 2009 honda civic. the license plate 6 hwu 861.

if you have any information, contact oakland police. police in vallejo are looking for suspects in the shooting that left a man seriously injured. this happened shortly before 1:00 a.m. yesterday on amelia street. police say the victim was shot several times and did have surgery. he's listed now in critical condition. so far, no word on a motive. if you have any information, call vallejo police. southwest airlines are ent -- will continue inspecting their fleet of 747s today after the airplane and government announced tiny cracks have been found in three different planes. those tiny cracks are similar to the ones that forced a southwest jet to make an emergency landing in arizona on friday. 118 people were on that sacramento-bound flight when the fuselage of the plane ruptured leaving behind a 5- foot tear. you see it there in the

picture. more flight delays are expected around the country. the airline expects toens kale 100 flights today. over the weekend, 600 flights were cancelled. despite the inconvenience, one woman tells us she has no problem getting back on another southwest flight. >> i love southwest airlines. i feel very comfortable when i fly with them. they, other than today, have always been on time and the lines are short. but those passengers may have been very -- must have been very frightened. >> jade hernandez has been at the airport all morning long and says six flights departing were cancelled and flights that were arrive -- that were due to arrive have been cancelled. more on inspections. casey siegel is live in yuma,

arizona, the city where all of the trouble started. what's happening today with the plane that developed a hole? >> reporter: well, tori, good morning to you. that plane we're talking about, just right behind me, you know, it's miraculous, that 118 passengers and five crew members walked off of that plane friday night after it split wide open as it was traling about 3 6,000 -- >> responding to what? >> reporter: only about 18 1/2 minutes after it took off from phoenix. as fares a the investigation goes, several things are going -- as far as the investigation goes, they are poring over the plane's maintenance records and then yesterday a fuse of the -- a piece of the fuselage was removed. today, that piece will be shipped to the washington, d.c.

ntsb materials lab for analysis. investigators tell us that they've found preexisting fatigue and cracking on this particular plane but they said that it would not have been visible to the naked eye, which is perhaps why it missed -- it was missed in the visual informations and was allowed to -- inspectings and was allowed to -- inspections and was able to fly in the first place. investigators say it's not uncommon for cracks to be found in airplanes that are this old. this one's about 15 years old because of the wear and tear on them, but, of course, they are repaired by the airline. still a lot of unanswered questions. >> what's the reaction been so far about how southwest is

responding to the situation? >> reporter: well, i just heard a sound bite with a passenger that i -- with a guy that you guys spoke with in oakland. we were seeing a lot of sound coming in on the feeds all weekend long from passengers. a the hoff them say in the name of safety, it's hard to complain about cansled flights -- cancelled flights. about 600 flights were cancelled over the weekend. just within the last few minutes, southwest says the number is down to 70 cancellations. they originally grounded 79 of those airplanes to do the inspection. they say that 19 of them have passed inspection and they are now back in its fleet. they are back in service. so, you know, passengers say, while it is an inconvenience, of course, they want to be safe and the ntsb wants to make sure something like this obviously doesn't happen again, another scare in the sky. >> obviously very scary.

is there a time line for when all of these inspections will be done? >> really, the company is saying they have no idea when things are going to return to normal. they are hoping to complete all of the inspections by tomorrow or wednesday. but they don't know if other boeing 737s are gonna have to be inspected. a lot of unanswered questions at this point as people are trying to figure out how this happened in the first place. casey stegall live for us. thank you. another southwest that took off from the bay area airport had to make an emergency landing. this flight from oakland to san diego. it lanked -- it landed safely last night after an electrical burning smell in the plane's cabin. 142 people were on board. no one was huh. this plane was a 737. but this emergency land something said to be unrelated from the cracks that caused the

flat. crude oil prices hit a 30- month high in overnight trading. crude was selling for more than $108 a barrel. right now, it's at 107.90. and the top exextive of the state-run oil company says he thinks that's too high. he says unrest in the middle east is driving prices higher. prices spiked when fighting occurred between moammar gadhafi supporters and demonstrators. many san francisco renters say they are dealing with utility shutoffs as one of the

city's biggest rental operators struggles against foreclosure. the owners of city apartments once controlled about 300 buildings, 200 have recently foreclosed. 80 more are in receivership. tenants say they are being threatened with utility shutoffs because neither the landlord nor the banks are paying utility bills. 7:45. there may soon be a teacher shortage here in california. "the l.a. times" reports a big drop in the number of people entering the recession. that's a problem because a large number of baby boomers are expected to retire from the classrooms while the number of students will go up. some are blaming the california budget crisis for scaring off perspective teachers. in san mateo county, the sanity phase in the trial of the teenager accused of the pipe bomb attack at his high school will start today.

last week, jurors convicted andrew youshock on six of seven counts but they deadlocked on one count. investigators say he planned to kill two staff members during the attack at hillsdale high school two years ago. prosecutors dismissed his insanity defense. they say the teenager was responsible for his actions. barry bonds is due back in court in about 30 minutes for week three of his perjury trial. tara moriarty is outside the courthouse in san francisco. so tara, what can we expect today? >> reporter: well, barry bonds should be arriving here shortly. if you take a look behind me, you can see the normal group of photographers that sort of hover in front of the courthouse waiting for bonds to arrive to get that shot. now, this morning, the prosecution's last witness will finish up, the doctor, doctor catlin -- dr. catlin will finish up. bonds told the grand jury back

in 2003 what he -- that he never knowingly used steroids and then the defense will begin its case and right now, legal analysts are saying that the defense has the upper hand here. that's because one of the prosecution's witnesses. dr.ting, went south on them. ting was bonds' orthopedic surgeon and hurt the prosecution because he repeatedly contradicted. star witness. now, hoskins told the jury that the doctor said that bonds's 1999 elbow injury was caused by steroid use but ting actually denied that. so a lot of twist and turns in this case. we will, of course, give you an update and keep you posted on what happens here this morning. we're live in san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 6,000 acres have burned in new mexico as a wildfire continues to grow. at least five homes and a horse

stable have been destroyed. several neighborhoods were evacuated this weekend. but some orders have been lifted. no injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. in capitola, businesses are hoping to bounce back following two natural disasters. warm weather helped draw people out over the weekend. last month, tsunamis in hare ber drained the budget of the local red cross. one woman displaced by flooding says the agency has been a big help. they sent out counselors for mental health. they've sent out water. they've sent out food. they did all kinds of things to help us in their behalf. more than a dozen people are still staying at a capitola hotel with help from the red cross. 7:49. two people are dead. three others are in the hospital from a violent night near palm springs. now, this happened yesterday in cathedral city. police say two brothers showed

up the at a party and they shot three people. one of the three died. later on, the two brothers wering home when police say someone ran -- were walking home when police say someone ran over them and shot them. one of the brothers died at the hospital. a researcher is claiming that the newest disney movie is not doing well at the box office because somebody in this movie triggers a psychological alarm in people. he says this is just too realistic. he says people feel attracted by inannie mat products like teddy bears. the movie requests mars meets mom "cost $150 million to make. it's only taken in $34 million. it's ten minutes before 8 :00. it was a job for a bomb squad.

the bomb squad was called to a home this weekend in san rafael. the bomb squad safely detonated the items at another location because the ammunitions were considered more trophies, no one is facing any criminal charges. a new trend in china has live animals being used as keychains "the global times" reports street vendors are

selling small turtles in an air- tight package with water. chinese law actually makes the sale of wild animals illegal. but turtles and small animals were not considered wild animals in that country. the space shuttle "endeavour's" final mission into space is delayed until at least the end of the month. it was scheduled to launch april 19th. but a russian supply ship, an unmanned ship, would already be docked at the international space station. nasa is rescheduling "endeavour's" launch for april 29th. reports this morning katie couric, reportingly is stepping down from "the evening news" desk. she's the first woman to anchor an evening newscast by herself. it's reported that she plans to host a syndicated talk show.

year-old son and the son helped get the other children out of the house. the red cross is helping them all now find a place to stay. firefighters say it appears the fire was an accident that started near a clothes dryer near the home -- in the home. safety inspections have forced southwest airlines to cancel flights across the country, including here in the bay area. jade hernandez has just learned new information about those flights and joins us live from the oakland airport with that new information. jade? >> reporter: we just spoke to the airport spokesperson here at oakland international about the southwest airlines cancellations this morning. she's a been in constant contact with the airline. 70 flights have been cancelled systemwide all due to this plane. take a look at this. this boeing 737 ripped open in flight and was diverted from san francisco to yuma, arizona. no one was hurt. but hundreds of flights were cancelled for inspection. it's now being reported that

cracks were found in three other planes. travelers gave us their thoughts about flying southwest. >> the news did a very good job of covering it. we looked on the tv this morning and they said they were -- there were eight cancellations. southwest was able to send an e- mail to my wife. everything is fine. i think it's the safest way for transportation. it's a lot easier than driving through oakland. passengers are being alerted on the website as well. a travel alert is listed -- posted. customers holding reservations for a cancelled flight may request -- may request a refund for a ticket. right now, here at oakland international, altogether, eight flights were cancelled this morning. four cancelled flight are on the board now. 300 flights were cancelled across the country yesterday. inspections were expected to be

forced to turn around just after take-off. joining us on the phone is evan anderson a reporter in new orleans. evan. >> what can you tell us about this flight? all right. i'm told, i believe, that we don't haverren, is that correct -- we don't have evan, is that correct? the will. apparently we're having problems with that connection. this was a flight bound for san francisco from new orleans that had some electric problems. you can see some of the passengers had to get off the plane through the chutes at the front and the back of the plane. no one was hurt. again, that united flight was scheduled to land about an hour from now at 9:30 this morning and instead it will be touching down supposedly about 3:30 this afternoon. that looks like some -- all right. now we have evan anderson on the phone, a reporter with wvue in new orleans. can you tell us what went wrong

with this flight? >> reporter: well, we have no confirmation exactly what went wrong. we're hearing from a lot of the of -- a lot of the passengers and flight attendants, that there was, as you said, an electrical problem. no kind of announcements were made. we've talked to some website -- some passengers, rather, on the plane, who said one of the flight attendants announced a movie that was about to play right before takeoff and then as they were taking off, they shut down system and that clearly pointed to electrical problems. a lot of people didn't see the smoke. no one was seriously hurt. they went all the way up to the air. and then they just are saying -- it wasn't right. they got up there, it started shaking, engine troubles, saying my engine is going on

and off. as they were heading down, they knew something agency wrong. no announcements were made about what was going on. the passengers had no idea why they were making that emergency landing. the nose of the plane kind of ended up off the tarmac into the grass. so some passengers are pretty shaken up this morning. >> from the pictures we've been looking at of this united plane, it looks like it's on the grass and not necessarily directly on the runway, as it should be. can you confirm that? >> right. the nose of the plane is actually stuck in the mud. the front wheels of the plane. as it was landing down -- some passengers are telling us that the pilot may have lost steering control. so as he landed up, he ended up inside of the grass off the tarmac. you can see that the front end of the plane is there off the

de janeiro, when it went down in june of 2009. as we first told you last night during the 10:00 news. french investigators have finally found wreckage from this crash. now this morning, officials say bodies have found -- have been found in that wreckage. southwest flights have been cancelled today, all because of that plane that made an emergency landing on friday. casey segal has more -- stegall has more. what's happening, casey? >> reporter: some terrifying moments. this is the southwest airlines jet. it was heading to sacramento at about 36,000 feet. that's when the passengers, when they were starting to

serve drinks, a giant hole open youd um in the -- opened up in the roof of the fuselage. investigators say the hole was five feet long and about a food wide. can you imagine. passengers say they could see the blue sky and coming through. the plane made a controlled and rapid descent from 31,000 feet to 11,000 feet. ntsb investigators trying to figure out what on earth caused it. they said they found what they are calling plea existing -- preexisting fatigue and cracking. they say the cracks would not have been visic to the naked eye, because they are so tiny which is why it perhaps missed the visual information and why the plane was allowed to fly in the first place. they are not sure how long the cracks have been there but apparently he they are by common -- they are quite

the space shuttle "endeavour's" last trip to space is being delayed, at least until the end of this month. "endeavour" was scheduled to launch on april 19th. but a russian supply ship would already be docked at the international space station. negotiations to have the russians put the unmanned ship in orbit were unsuccessful. so nasa is rescheduling "endeavour's" launch for april
