canceled. 11 total including inbound and outbound. inspections are expected to be done by tomorrow. >> all right. thank you. another southwest flight that took off from the bay area had to make an emergency landing last night. this flight from oakland to san diego landed safely in los angeles after a report of an electrical burning smell. 142 people were on board. no one was hurt. this emergency landing is said to be unrelated to the cracks that forced friday's landing in arizona. there's some activity at the scene of a deadly small plane crash today. the plane went down yesterday in the water near the intersection of harbor bay parkway. we just got this video as the plane was being pulled out of the mud minutes ago.

craig debra has more on that. >> reporter: good afternoon. i'm between the north field and the crash site. we have new information from a witness. but first, look at the crash site. they are cutting up the plane into five pieces to transport it to the state capitol for further inspection. see the piece on the left-hand side? they just cut this piece off. two people actually picked up that piece and set it on the ground. that's how light it is. according to this new witness we spoke to, the pilot may have had a chance to return to the airfield. >> he was trying to level it, but there was family there. >> reporter: according to a witness, the engine stall happened the second time the pilot take the plane over the water. >> he was flip flapping through the air. then he disappeared. then we heard him again and he came out and flip flapped. then we didn't hear anything after that. >> reporter: the pilot appeared to be rocking the plane from

side to side as if the plane was having rutter problems. >> did he go back over the airport? >> he went back around. that's where i heard him the second time. he was flapping his wings. >> the coroner identified the pilot from redwood city. >> the pilot did depart from the northfield runway yesterday at 3:30. >> reporter: an environmental team checked the plane for spilled before the faa cuts the plane into pieces. they are taking the plane to sacramento to determine the cause. people who know the pilot say he was a good pilot. >> he was the type of person who would do out of his way to help anybody. didn't matter if he didn't know who they were. just a great person.

>> in this live picture, they are pulling the front of the plane off. they are taking pieces of the plane to sacramento for further investigation and to determine the cause. reporting live, craig debro, channel 2 news. testimony in barry bonds perjury trial was put on hold after a juror called in sick suffering from gallstones. our cameras where there when bonds arrived in san francisco. the other jurors were sent home and the trial will not resume until at least tomorrow, but could be postponed the rest of the week. in the meantime, a meeting involving the judge and the attorneys in this case is scheduled to begin in just a few minutes to argue over the introduction of new evidence. it supports testimony between him and a surgeon over his alleged steroid use.

the federal government today launches a major new program to repair and replace gas and oil pipelines. this follows two recent disasters 3,000 piles apart. the transportation secretary will make the announcement in eastern pennsylvania where five people died and a pipeline explosion in february. that was five months after the pipeline disaster in san bruno. a big crowd is expected there tomorrow on a public hearing on natural gas pipeline safety plans. the commission is considering several proposals. they include automatic shutoff valves, replacing aging pipes, and improving recordkeeping. ahead a police crackdown is starting. we'll tell you what they are looking for. only on 2, an id theft ring busted in the bay area. we just learned about this. we'll tell you how police cracked the case. ;

a crash and spill caused a backup for the caster valley commute this morning. the crash occurred just after 7 a.m. on westbound 580. we took these pictures of the truck against the wall. crews had to close the left lane for almost two hours to remove the truck and clean up the spill. the lanes reopened at 8:45. a story you'll see only on 2. police have arrested two men who went on a $40,000 shopping spree last week using stolen credit card numbers. here is an exclusive look at some of the items officers found in the hotel room along with $6,000 in cash. it includes brand names like gucci. the men were caught when clerks became suspicious and notified security. >> they ended up notifying us. they were arrested over an gary

street on saturday. then yesterday we did a search warrant on their hotel room. >> san francisco police have identified the suspects as 33- year-old oscar giara and 33- year-old leonardo daniel. if you drive while talking or texting on your cell phone, the chp is looking for you. april is distracted driving awareness month. we rode along with officers as they carried out a crackdown on distracted drivers. >> if you are stopped for talking on a phone illegally or texting, you are going to receive a citation. we have seen an increase in numbers involving crashes where distracted driving was a factor. we want people to get back to basics of just driving and not being distracted with anything else. >> the first ticket costs a minimum of $159.

subsequent tickets start at $279. you can go to the channel 2 website for more in the police crackdown plans aimed at distracted drivers. you can also read details for yourself. just click on the traffic page. san francisco transit leaders will meet to focus on the drop in the on time performance. figures show buss were on schedule 71% of the time in the last three months of 2010. that's down 1% from the previous quarter. both numbers are way below the mandate of 85% on time. a mark that they have never reached. in redwood city, a mother and five children barely escaped an early morning fire. it happened at 2 a.m. at the harbor village mobile home park on bay shore road. the mother woke up and saw the flames, but they blocked her from reaching her children. she screamed and woke up her 17-year-old son who helped get the other children out. a neighbor talked about the frantic escape to safety.

>> woke up after 2 this morning and looked out the window and flames were shooting out the house. the whole family had come out the back window. they were screaming. >> the mother and her four kids are staying with relatives. the other child is a friend of the family's. the fire started behind a drier and was accidental. there may soon be a teacher shortage in california. the los angeles times reports a big drop in the number of people entering the teaching profession. that's a problem because a large number of baby boomers are expected to retire from the classroom soon. while the number of students is expected to increase. some blame the state budget crisis for scaring off perspective teachers. 43 years ago today martin luther king jr. was assassinated. he was shot to death in 1968 in memphis, tennessee. a die of baffle demonstrations and prayers are scheduled at

churches nationwide. workers rights activists are also marching today including here in the bay area. dr. king was in memphis to support striking sanitation workers when he was assassinated. the recent legislative battles in wisconsin and ohio against public employee collective bargaining rights is spreading across the country. almost 750 bills have been introduced in virtually every state affect unions in some way. almost half would restrict employee bargaining rights. workers are fighting back and wisconsin is gathering signatures to recall republican lawmakers who supported the new law. a judge put the law on hold while it goes through the appeal process. dozens of trucks lined up this morning unable to deliver or pickup loads. port officials say members of a union are taking part in a national day of action in response to the collective bargaining laws in ohio and wisconsin. at least one driver was upset by this morning's actions.

process, which is something protesters said they would not accept. in japan operators of the nuclear power plant dumped 10,000 gallons of radioactive water into the pacific ocean. the water has a level of radioactivity that's 500 times above the legal limit. officials say they had to dump the tainted water to make storage tanks available for more highly contaminated water pooling around the reactor and seeping into the ocean. the search for that leak also continues with the discovery of a crack. they tried to plug it with cement but the water continues to flow into the sea. they also used a milky substance to try to trace the leak, but so far it has not appeared in the ocean. supporters of bp say one way to decrease oil prices is to allow the company to resume deep water drilling in the gulf

of mexico. bp is asking for permission to start drilling at the wells it already had under development when the explosion happened killing 11 people and sending a massive amount of oil into the water. it promises federal inspectors will have 24-hour a day access to their operations, but opponents say it's too soon for bp to start drilling again. sunshine across the board. we're hard pressed to find a cloud. temperatures start off with a couple 30s and now 40s. almost 70 degrees for a few. you can see everything that's coming close has gone up. especially near the oregon border where there's some cloud cover. south of us, it's sunshine. now the morning lows a couple of north bay locations snuck in with upper 30s. kenwood was in there. and also north na pa came in. if you thought it was chilly,

will be around freezing. inland areas. it will be noticeably colder around here. >> some snow in the hills maybe? >> a little bit, but this is more of a cold system than wet system. with a possibility of a government shutdown by week's end, president obama invited congressional leaders to the white house tomorrow to see if they can work out a compromise on the budget. both parties are focusing on cuts. they have not been able to agree where to make the cuts. some republicans want to cut even more and reduce the federal deficit. congress has passed several short-term spending extension, but the current budget is now more than six months overdue. ahead an animated movie being called too scary for viewers.

taking a live look at the big board on wall street. stocks pretty quiet today. investors wait for the earnings season that begins next week. the dow is up 11. nasdaq is down 7. s&p is down 1.5. investigators now say computer hackers pulled off one of the biggest data thefts in u.s. history. walgreens, tivo, and capitol one all say e-mail addresses for their customers were stolen from a marketing company.

the names of students affiliated with the college board were taken. the company says no personal financial information was taken, but the e-mails and names may be used to try to get that information from people. a researcher says the latest disney movie is not doing as well at the box office because it triggers a psychological alarm in viewers. the animation is too realistic. when characters look too human, we see the differences including motionless eyes or awkward movements. that makes us uncomfortable. it has taken in $34 million. the space shuttle endeavor's last trip into space is being delayed at least until the end of this month. endeavor was scheduled to launch on april 19th, but a russian supply ship would already be docked at the space station. nasa is rescheduling the launch for april 29th.
