we just stepped out of the courthouse in the barry bonds's trial to give ut late -- to give you the latest. details on a southwest flight that had to divert and turn around back to the airport here this morning. and the two officers accused of training unarmed volunteers. that's next on the ktvu channel 2 news at noon.

good afternoon. we begin with the barry bonds's perjury trial that resumed this morning. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us from outside the san francisco courthouse with some dramatic new developments. >> reporter: good afternoon. a bridge version of bonds's grand jury testimony is being read out loud right now. it started about 20 minutes ago. it will continue after lunch. what we've just learned in the last ten minutes is a tape recording has not been made admissible. we watched barry bonds arrive for day ten of the trial. the first order of business was to have witnesses from the uc olympic lab testify that the 2003 urine sample tested there was indeed barry bonds'. dr.catlin testified about that. he is considered one of the four most anti-doping experts. he was asked by the government

a series of questions pertaining to the sample which he admitted tested positive for the designer drug "the clear." once dr. cat lin self -- stepped down -- once dr. catlin stepped down from the witness stand, the judge ruled against the tape recording, steve hosskins, his conversation with dr. ting. hosskins said he made the tape back in 2003 but could just recently find it. the judge stated his credibility was damaged. since the tape was not found earlier, it was also very hard to understand. if the tape was made add missable proving crede -- admissible proving credibility. 20 minutes ago, the judge instructed the jury about bonds's grand jury testimony which would be read to them. that continues right now inside

175 boeing 737s worldwide to search for tiny cracks related to weak metal on the fuselage. concerns originated with an incident last friday involving the rupture of the aluminum skin and the sudden appearance of a five-foot long hole during a flight to sacramento. 80 of the planes' meeting inspections are in the u.s. most are operated by southwest. now, the order is not -- now, the order is not expected to include the boeing for southwest because those were inspected. these inspections caused delays for passengers around the country over the past three days. in the bay area, 12 flights were cancelled but southwest says operations are back to normal today. this morning, passengers at the oakland airport were concerned about plane safety. >> i'm nervous. this is my first time ever

catching a plane. it happens to be southwest. >> yeah, it's definitely a concern. boy, i mean, nobody wants to put their family at risk. >> southwest says it's now making repairs on those five planes that have cracks. southwest mechanics in oakland are also working on a jet that developed a flap problem this morning. the plane had taken off from the oakland airport heading to denver. the pilot discovered an issue with the flap as the jet was approaching nevada. so the pilot turned around and the plane landed safely back in oakland around 7:30. no one was hurt. all of the passengers were put on another flight. an alarming report involving the richmond police department. it indicates that some officers armed teenaged volunteers and had them patrolled. -- patrol some of the city's most dangerous conditions. kraig debro has more on this. kraig? >> reporter: yeah, tori. richmond police are not staying much this afternoon but they did issue two letters, one to the press and the public. this comes from the office of

the chief and one letter to the explorer and the plexorers' parts and gather -- explores parents and guardian. the fbi is also conducting an investigation into the allegations of the wrongdoing. internal affairs and one other law enforcement agency are also conducting investigations. now, one of the two men who brought the complaint confirms that he has -- and a fellow explorer worked here at the housing complex in richmond. 21-year-old sergio rios said he was just an explorer with the richmond police department at the time last year. anxious to gain experience, he agreed to work at a private security company, owned by two officers. he also gave one of the officers $500 to buy a gun. rios could not have legally bought it at the time. along with friend and fellow exer floor -- explorer, orlando torres, he says he patrolled the neighborhood with a weapon.

administrative review. eric rasmussen will have a full report coming up on the news at 6:00. reporting live in richmond, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. the chauncey bailey murder trial resumed in an oakland courtroom this morning. yesterday, jurors heard chilling testimony from the man who admitted shooting the oakland journalist. broussard said he went up to bailey and without saying a word opened fire. broussard said he fired three times to be certain bailey was dead. broussard claims yusef bey iv ordered him to kill bailey because the journalist was working on a story about the financial collapse of the bakery. oakland police are investigating a shooting this morning which left two people injured. it hatched at seminary avenue on east 18th street where shots were fired into a van. police say -- police say they received the report around 8:15. they are releasing very few details but officers were also at a second crime scene which may be related on 60th avenue.

all lanes are clear on doyle drive following an approach. a golden gate bus and van clipped each other around 8:45 this morning just south of the toll plaza. a district person says one person in the van suffered minor injuries. no one on the bus was hour. the crash blocked three lanes for about half an hour. there's no word on whether any citations were issued or who was at hult. muni officials are expected to respond today to a video showing a dangerous situation. it shows passengers standing right next to an open door on a fast-moving train. a passenger shot this video and posted it on youtube, saying it happened on the rush hour commute on the l-line between van ness and church. the driver of the light rail train is being disciplined. a muni official says the

down but is willing to discuss changes in the way libya is governed. in japan, the operator of that damaged nuclear plant says levels of radiation in nearby sea water is now several million times higher than the legal limit. the plant operator dumped more than 10,000 gallons of radioactive water into the sea yesterday to free up storage for more highly contaminated water. authorities insist the radioactivity will dissipate and poses no immediate risk. but the japanese government is apologize. india also announced it's halting food imports from japan for three months over here of radiation. here in the bay area, a professor from uc berkeley is testing grass clippings from one neighborhood for radiation fallout from japan. already, professor professor vetter and his students have

found trace amounts from an alameda home. he and his students gathered air and water samples from a rooftop in berkeley three weeks ago and found trace amounts of iodine in the air and grass. he says that amount is not harmful even though they can be measured. >> it depends on one hand, on what happens in japan. we have a delay three, four days. whatever happens over there, we will see here a few days later. we expect to see something here, in the atmosphere, in our environment as long as it's happening there. but as soon as it hops -- it stopses, then we should -- it stops, then we should see a decline. >> the professor is also testing mushrooms. tourists from yosemite park could be in for a special treat. the huge snowpack is expected to melt and create spectacular waterfalls. it's the tallest in the area

and the falls will likely be the park's main attraction. there are plenty other falls in the park and elsewhere in california that will benefit from all of the melting snow. well, that melting snow will slow down as a very cold system moves in on wednesday and thursday. today, mostly sunny, clouds are on the increase. that system has been hanging up towards mendocino and lake county. it's dropping into napa and sonoma. it's mostly sunny. a little cooler and breezy. that breeze it -- that breeze is out of the west. yesterday, we had an east- northeast. the wind picks up tomorrow and the cooling continues and thursday, we watch a very cold system coming in. not much in the way of rain but it will certainly drop our temperatures, everybody in the 50s. we'll have off-and-on light rain and very blustery conditions. the weekend will be okay. it will just be really cold on friday and saturday morning, least for april. there's our system.

not much to it. produce-- producing some rain. the high-pressure system for monday which gave us upper 70s and low 80s is getting knocked down. even though it's still nice, a lot of upper 50s and 60s close to the coast. still 60s inland. it will be noticably cooler tomorrow and then a brrr kind of a thursday. we have temperatures about 5, 7 degrees cooler than yesterday today. 59, san francisco. coastal fog made an appearance for a while. it looks to be retreating but it's still kind of hanging out there by the san mateo coast. 62 oakland, almost 70 for done cord. -- concord. herein lies the difference west, at 21, san francisco, so the delta breeze all the way there towards out to the sacramento valley, compared to yesterday. still, a little north wind up at ka vaville and stay --

vacaville and san jose. system coming down out of the gulf of alaska really doesn't look like much. it will turn us mostly sunny, mostly cloudy. but the main component is the west wind. as that comes through that's the leading edge of our cooling trend. the bigger system drops in on thursday. it will be a big drop in the temperatures. but snow level, believe it or not, could drop to 2500 feet if there's any moisture left. this is a drier system. so i really don't expect much. agricultural interests, cover your plants. the rain will be light. high temperatures will be in the mid-50s. if there's any moisture left by friday morning, the snow could make it down to around 2 500 feet. today, it's mostly sunny but it's cooler. some of that patchy fog on the coast and wind is out of the west for most. temperatures upper 50s and some low 60s to a few 70s. we'll say goodbye to the 70s after today. 75 antioch. 66 alameda. 67, berkeley. 70 in castro valley.

72 in san jose, fremont, 70. some upper 50ss, 60s and in the city and then the peninsula, upper 60s, low 70s. we'll have really cold air coming in on friday. the giants' home omer is on friday night. it will be dry it just -- home ohm -- home omer is friday night. it will be dry just not very warm. >> okay. thank you, steve. >> you bit. san francisco state could be looking at $32 million in budget cuts. the examiner reports there will be a vote on the plan that would dissolve two of the colleges to help save money on office of sta. this comes after state lawmakers and the governor failed to reach a deal for a june special election that would have asked voters to extend temporary taxes. a faculty vote should come at the end of the month. governor brown is signing a bill authorizing -- he's signed a bill authorizes the transfer of thousands of state inmates

but there's a catch. brown planned to fund the measure with tax extensions he hoped to put before voters in june but he gave up that option last week in the face of opposition. so when the governor signed the bill, he wrote that the measure will not take effect until the pay has ficked out a way to -- figured out it a way to -- figured out a way to pay. the east bay spca very muched a program to educate patrol -- developed a program to educate patrol officers about animal behavior and their options without shooting them. the recent shootings of an older pet dog and a deer in one's -- in someone's yard prompted the training. >> if we can get the dispatcher on the front end to ask if there is a dog, much like you would a weapon, that would really help alleviate a lot of
