6:02 am
firefighters battling a duplex fire in berkeley this morning. had to work around some downed wires and two ruptured gas meters. ktvu's claudine wong joins us now from berkeley where the search for the cause of this fire is still underway. claudine. >> reporter: yes. in the last several minutes, pam, fire crews and pg&e left the scene. but as you can see over here the fire investigators is still standing by. he did do a preliminary search of the property inside but he's still got a lot of work ahead. you take a look at the damage you can see it's extremely significant. and it's actually hard he said to get through and figure out where everything is. this is actually a two story building. we didn't realize that looking at this. he said part of the challenge will be waiting until daylight and figuring out where everything is. as far as the victims who lived inside this home, they are on their way to a local hotel. now this was according to the battalion chief out here a pretty tricky fire to fight. there was at least one downed power line and they had to work around that power line. there was also a situation where they had two gas meters
6:03 am
that blew just by the heat of the fire. those gas meters sent out flames for about 90 minutes until the fire crews could dig through debris to find a shutoff valve. it's still unclear what started all of this. residents told firefighters they woke imto the fire just after 1:00 this morning. >> they're not sure what woke them up. if they heard something. they said they felt heat. at this point we're still investigating whether or not there were smoke detectors in the house. and once one of them was awake they realize there was fire they saw the orange glow through the window. >> reporter: four adults were inside that home. they got out safely. the red cross was here helping them out. they got some blankets and something warm to drink and then in the last 15 minutes or so we saw them take off with the red cross headed to a local hotel for much needed rest. no one wanted to talk this morning. they said it was really just a very stressful and long night and they just wanted to get some rest. back live out here you can see this is actually what's left of the downed power line that came
6:04 am
down and stretched across the street. really had fire crews scrambling. actually had to use two separate fire hydrants on two separate sides of the street because they couldn't cross the street to get to the home. again, fire investigator says he'll be out here most of the morning. they're expecting photographers to get out here and help them map out the scene. he did do interviews with the residents. we'll let you know what he finds coming up on mornings on 2. live in berkeley, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning investigators are also still on the scene of a big fire in san francisco's mission district. that was first reported shortly after 8:00 last night on mission street near valencia. now the building contains both homes and businesses. strong winds caused the flames to spread to two other buildings. it took 100 firefighters nearly two hours to get the fire under control. one firefighter was hurt. >> he was fighting the fire on the inside. i believe fell from an attic extension ladder approximately four to five feet.
6:05 am
he's undergoing evaluation at the hospital. >> he's now listed in stable condition. the red cross is providing shelter for the people left homeless by that fire. and investigators have been on the scene all night. they're still looking for the cause. time now 6:04. an oakland firefighter's getting medical treatment after being hurt when a motor home exploded. this happened yesterday evening on redding avenue about 5:00. the driver of the disabled motor home was fixing the engine when it caught fire. after firefighters arrived, the rv's engine blew up. one firefighter was burned on his face. a castro valley intersection reopened just about an hour and a haling a following a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist. it happened last night at about 8:00 on redwood road near the 580 onramp. alameda county sheriff deputies say the motorcyclist was driving wrecklessly and took off when the deputy tried to pull him over. deputies say he ran two red lights and then was going through a third red light when he collided with a truck.
6:06 am
>> this situation was very quick to materialize. by the time the deputy put on his lights and siren, the motorcycle traveling and hit the semitruck is probably less than a quarter of a mile. >> the motorcyclist died at the scene. and we do not know his name. the driver of the truck was not hurt. the california highway patrol is now investigating. time now 6:05. a muni bus operator back on the job after being caught texting while driving with a bus full of passengers. ktvu's kraig debro live in san francisco right now where the whole thing was caught on video. kraig. >> reporter: dave, the chp considers texting while driving such a big problem that it announced a program to crack down on the practice earlier this week. earlier this year a woman driving the 24 bus was caught texting while driving on a cell phone. now we know it's wrong but some of us still do it. still there's something about a bus driver doing it that makes texting while driving seem even
6:07 am
worse. >> all of our lives are in their hands. at any time we could wreck and all die. >> reporter: sean says he was riding the bus back in february when he saw this. a driver texting while driving. not only was the driver texting but receiving texts. in fact, you can actually hear the sound cue from receiving messages. >> absolutely against our rules and regulations. and any time something like this happens we try to take immediate action. >> reporter: i spoke with two bus line drivers this morning. neither said they'd heard about the incident. the episode didn't end with the videotape. he asked the driver to stop texting. her response. >> took out her iphone and started recording us on the bus and saying i'm going to show you. i'm going to show you. i'll never pick you up again -- >> reporter: he wants the driver fired. muni suspended her for three days without pay.
6:08 am
one muni driver i spoke with says it shouldn't have happened, but what did happen is no difference if you or i did the same thing. i've got a text myself into the muni spokesperson. i want to find out why they are now just investigating the threat that was made not to pick him up anymore if they had the cell phone videotape enough to suspend this woman from driving. reporting live in san francisco, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:07. well, the barry bonds trial is coming to an end. this morning lawyers will make closing arguments. the jury could start its deliberations by the end of the day. testimony came to an abrupt end yesterday when barry bonds very confident lawyers rested. they didn't even call barry bonds or anyone else to the witness stand. >> my sense is the defense feels like it is sitting about as well as it could expect. and the minute you start putting witnesses on, you have accompanying risk. >> now in sharp contrast the prosecutors call 25 witnesses to the stand during two and a
6:09 am
half weeks of testimony. the jury of eight women and four men will determine if barry bonds lied when he testified under oath he'd never knowingly used steroids. in washington d.c. this morning democrats and republicans are still scrambling trying to reach an agreement on a spending bill to avoid a government shut down this weekend. now coming up at 6:15, we're going to have a live report from washington d.c. with a look at whether any last minute agreement can be made. all right. time now 6:08. let's see what sal's seeing around the toll plaza. how's that doing? still doing okay. but one of the things you have to watch out for today are the high winds on the bridges. so at the toll plaza won't be as bad as when you actually make it on to the bridge. and as i look at my traffic cameras there's certainly a little bit of rain moving through. steve just announced to the world he doesn't like the word showers. it's raining here and there. how about that, steve? don't answer yet. northbound 880 traffic is busy. this camera has been bouncing
6:10 am
up and down. just be careful. high wind advisories through the bridges and this morning if you're driving on the san mateo or dumbarton bridge the wind will get your attention. at 6:09, here's steve. i prefer rain, yes, sal, that is correct. we do have scattered showers moving through. some of these could be brief heavy at times. so far a tenth of an inch redwood city. that's why it's kind of lit up right there just going through that's the radar site. over highway 17, santa cruz mountains monterey highway, morgan hill, santa clara valley and east bay things have calmed slightly in the peninsula and also north bay. there's more upstream. i'll show you that in a second. it's diving down. it being the low. and very cold unstable air right there that's the source. that's hugging the coast right now. there's some reports of rain, snow mix and even snow. this is the one we're talking about for later today. when you get a cold system like that coming in in april, that really helps fuel the possibility of thundershowers. reports of hail today would not
6:11 am
surprise me. maybe severe weather out in the valley. 40s on the temps. 42 santa rosa. temperatures continuing to go down. and there's our system two pieces for it. the one going through now south bay and santa clara valley and next section coming down eureka that's the really cold part. see how it carves itself out? i love that. that's going all the way down to southern california. by tomorrow we'll be on the northern edge. but we'll be on the breezy cool edge of it as well. and the really critical minimums will be friday morning and saturday morning in wind protected areas. today highs in the 50s. possible thundershowers snow level around 2500 feet. this is a cold system. so if we do get snow, it's late tonight or early friday morning. and the sierra definitely dealing with some snow. could be bursts for a couple hours of moderate snow mainly around 6:00 to 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning. by then it will slide south. maybe a foot to foot and a half in higher locations. cooler windy today off and on showers. 50s and a possibility of thundershowers later on. we'll still keep it quite
6:12 am
active into early friday and then looks better except for the cold lows in the morning. we will warm fast on the weekend. all right. time now 6:11. parts of the bay area will get rain this morning. but could some of that rain contain radiation from the japanese nuclear disaster? scientists say there's not much to worry about. take a look at last month's storm in oakland. some of the pictures of that. the environment protection agency says the rainwater was tested. while they did receive radio active water in the rainwater there is no health risk. there's ongoing concern about what to do with millions of gallons of radioactive water. every day workers continue to spray water on the reactors to try to keep them from melting down until that cooling system can be restarted. but no one knows how to get rid of that water. an estimated 15 million-gallons of highly radioactive water has
6:13 am
already accumulated. and hundreds of thousands of gallons are being added every day. the body of an american teacher in japan has been found three weeks after the earthquake and tsunami. the family of 26-year-old monty dickson were notified by japanese authorities. he was from alaska and teaching in japan as part of an exchange program. he's the second american teacher to die in that disaster. the official death toll in japan now stands at more than 12,000. but another 14,000 are still listed as missing. all right. time now 6:13. the deadline midnight tomorrow democrats and republicans of washington are in round the clock budget negotiations. how likely they are to reach an agreement on a new spending bill and avoid a government shutdown. also how the golden state warriors can maybe help you score some free bart tickets.
6:14 am
6:15 am
6:16 am

6:17 am
senate majority leader harry reed. locked over spending cuts and policy provisions like # like pr and planned parenthood. both sides blame the other for taking the government to a brink of shutdown. >> the president isn't leading. he didn't lead on last year's budget. and he clearly is not leading on this year's budget. >> reporter: the house votes today on another temporary budget that cuts $12 billion, keeps the government running for one more week and funds the military for the rest of the year. but it stands little chance of clearing the senate. democrats are calling it a gimmick. live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. well, a close friend of president obama is in trouble with the law. honolulu police say robert is one of four men arrested during an undercover prostitution sting on monday. he's a former classmate of the president's and the two often play golf and basketball together when the president visits hawaii. the white house so far has not
6:18 am

6:19 am
cuts. the proposal would eliminate baby bullet trains, close stations and increase parking fees and fares. but it would keep weekend and late night service as well as special event trains running. cal train faces a $30 million budget deficit in this coming fiscal year. time now 6:18. let's check in with sal and get you to where you need to go this morning. sal. one of our engineers just told me that to look at our 280 camera and maybe we'll be able to bring it up at the end because i just spotted -- he just spotted some light and let me know about it. we work as a team here at ktvu. right now we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound bay bridge. the traffic is backed up to about the middle of the parking lot. but it's windy on that bridge. so give yourself a little extra time as steve has been saying could see a little bit of rain here and there on the morning commute. 880 the winds have kind of settled down. it was a lot windier earlier. and now the camera isn't shaking as much. but just be careful. you might see some winds out
6:20 am
there. wind advisories are up. this is a look at 280 northbound on the maps here. and 101 and 85 south bay i don't see anything. again, i see some flashing lights on 280. this is our south bay camera there. i don't know what that is but we will follow that perhaps it's just a tow truck. 280 northbound on the right there. we'll see. that's northbound 280 near bird avenue. doesn't look like it's causing a huge traffic jam but it's definitely wet. speaking of the weather let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. we have some rain moving through. couple pieces to this. one has been moving through this morning. about .10 of an inch in redwood city right along highway 1 santa cruz over to morgan hill and gill roy 101 monterey hey san jose south bay getting a little rain. some could be bursts of moderate to heavy rain. looks like it's winding down for many. east bay dealing with light rain. nothing too heavy there. come out wider there's snow up in the mountains.
6:21 am
the one i'm really watching is right there. that's the one out of the northwest. that's the one that has the really, really cold air that comes in later today. and possibility of thundershowers. so this is for this time of year a very cold dynamic system. any time of year this would be cold but for april. 46 livermore. temperatures today would be very, very cool compared to last couple days as we get this cold system coming in. cooler, windy at times. showers possible thundershowers. few sun breaks just helps give a possibility of thunderstorms later on today. and reports of hail would not surprise me at all later today. 50s on the temps about 54 to 57 should give the spread today for everybody. that's a push on the temps. windy and cool on friday with decreasing showers. but the lows friday and saturday morning will be the big issue. but once we get to the afternoon this time of year the highs rebound pretty fast. all right. thank you, steve. well, in the last half hour the european central bank announced it's raising main interest rate by one quarter of a percent. that's the first time the bank

6:28 am
and with that he just hung up. >> now police are warning these calls could be coming from someone in town or in another country. so it's hard to trace. they want anyone who gets a suspicious call like that to call the police immediately. new tributes to the giants fan who was brutally beaten outside dodgers stadium. there are now vigils and fundraisers all across the state. >> reporter: right now berkeley fire investigator is sifting through what is left of a berkeley duplex. we'll tell you why firefighters this morning had to deal with more than just fire. that's when the morning news continues.

6:32 am
take the alameda ferry will be on the roads. give yourself extra time. the winds are going to be a problem for many of the bay area bridges. in fact advisories are issued for a lot of them. be careful out there. another traffic update in just a few. 6:31. let's go back to the desk. you can hear the wind howling. it's part of our developing news from berkeley. there was an early morning fire that chased four people out of their home on dwight way. ktvu's claudine wong is out there to talk about why this was a really tough fire to fight. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, we're in the 1500 block of dwight. this is the fire investigators vehicle here. within the last couple minutes he just went inside this berkeley duplex to figure out what caused this fire. a lot of debris out here. show you this situation. look at this white stuff. kind of looks lie snow. that's all the foam they use today fight this fire. we talk about the damage that's inside this building. take a look inside through the window you can see there's not even a back wall here. again, fire investigator right now inside. i can see his flash. he's taking some pictures right
6:33 am
now trying to figure out the cause of this. this all started about 1:00 this morning. firefighters say the four people who lived inside that duplex awoke to the sound of the fire, maybe the crackling. they saw the flames and they immediately decided they needed to get out. they got out and called 911. police were actually the first on the scene. they say when they got on the scene they realized that firefighters were going to have to deal with more than just fire. >> electrical fire. all we do is notify all the crews on scene because it's an extreme hazard. we throw cones out. put hazard tape out and p.d. will standby and direct not only our people but make sure that civilians stay out of the area. yeah. it wasn't dancing around or anything. but any lines down on the ground. and it was draped against the cable line. so even the communication lines we assumed that were down in the street were also live. >> reporter: that downed electric line actually went all the way across dwight way. they had to use two separate fire hydrants on opposite sides to fight the fire because they
6:34 am
couldn't go near it. the electric line was just part of the problem. also two gas meters that exploded as fire crews arrived on scene. that sent out a flame on both sides. and they had to wait on that. they had to actually dig through the debris to find a shutoff valve. the flames were going for 90 minutes while they waited for pg&e crews to arrive. fire crews ended up shutting it off themselves and then pg&e deemed everything safe. the electric shutoff and gas shutoff. they also left the scene. again, at this hour inside what is left of this duplex the fire investigator is sifting through. again, i can still see him flashing some pictures in the back. he was a little concerned about going in there before we got some daylight out here because he said the layout of this duplex is a little tricky. as far as the cause he's still trying to figure it out. live in berkeley, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:34. san francisco fire investigators still on the scene of a big fire in the mission district. it was first reported about 8:00 last night on mission street near valencia. now the building contains both
6:35 am
homes and businesses. look at this. because of the strong winds look at the winds pushing it. the flames spread to two other buildings. talk about a hundred firefighters almost two hours to get this under control. one firefighter was actually hurt. he's listed in stable condition. investigators have been out there all night looking for the cause of that fire. meantime about 100 tenants of a residential building in san francisco's tenderloin district they're in temporary housing this morning. that's after tuesday night's big fire at the franciscan tower on eddy street. four people had to be hospitalized. mostly for smoke inhalation. investigators searching for the cause but they don't think it was intentionally set. later this morning the coroner's expected to tell us the name of a young man who died in a house fire in richmond. he died when flames raced through his home on highland avenue in south 58th street yesterday afternoon. now his grandfather told ktvu news he thinks the young man was asleep when the fire
6:36 am
started. witnesses say strong winds in that neighborhood did not help out. they caused the flames to move even faster. all right. we have some breaking news about some -- about a power outage this morning. we want to go right over to sal who has more details for us. all right. there's a truck that has run into a pole and apparently is effecting power in parts of south san francisco. these are live pictures now in south san francisco of a truck that ran into a power pole here in the south city. now this is east of highway 101 on east grand avenue near forbes. it's mostly an industrial area. there are a lot of -- just a lot of businesses there. it's not really residential. but that pole sheered off as a result of the crash and some of these high voltage lines are effected. in fact it looks like this could be even effecting some of the regional power too. so we will let you know. pg&e is there on the scene.
6:37 am
obviously they have to rite the pole and do a little bit of investigation. so we'll tell you more about this in just a little bit coming up. let's go to pam. all right. thank you, sal. well, cell phone video of a muni operator texting while driving is now causing some controversy. ktvu's kraig debro is in san francisco this morning where the driver is back on the job. kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, pam. we don't know if the driver's back on the 24 line or where she's riding. might have been trading texts with muni spokesperson paul rose this morning. clearly neither one of us is driving. and i wanted to ask him why if they had the cell phone video was muni looking into the threat allegedly made by the driver. he says the video only shows the text and not necessarily does the video record the alleged threat. the passenger recorded the video off a reflection in the bus mirror. if you look at the highlighted part of the video, you can see the driver texting and hear a sound cue indicating the driver also received texts. we received this video
6:38 am
yesterday. the man recorded it in february on the 24 bus. he says when he confronted the driver instead of putting down the phone she threatened him. >> she took out her iphone and started recording us on the bus and saying i'm going to show you. i'm going to show you. i'll never pick you up again -- >> absolutely against our rules and regulations. and any time something like this happens we try to take immediate action. >> reporter: muni says the driver was suspended for three days without pay but is now back on the job. take a look here. people are going to be getting on this 24 bus here at castro where it meets market. now, muni says it's looking into taking further action based on the driver's threat, the alleged threat. i'm going to reach paul again by phone if not on camera to see if we can get further information about that. he also says records were not available last night when we did this story. so maybe they are this morning. reporting live in san

6:40 am
