expect. well, good morning. welcome to morning on two. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. a chp officer is recovering after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. ktvu's paul chambers has more. >> oar we're on the on-ramp. this is what's remaining after that freeze ice storm that came through this morning. it's causing headaches. all that remain is this slush but it may be the result of an accident. around 2:00 this morning an accident involving a chp officer shut down the interstate for two hours. the officers wall patrolling 880

northbound when he saw a car on the side of the road and went to help. that's what he white vehicle came up and struct officer. >> he was disabled on the right shoulder. one of the officers came and assisted. i believe he was helping something with the tire. another vehicle came from the slow lane and struck the officer and knocked him in front of the vehicle. >> reporter: the officer was taken to a nearby hospital where he is recovering from a non-life-threatening injury. it is believed he has a broken leg. the driver that struck the officer was arrested. it's been pretty smooth sailing. people have been coming through. be extra cautious when you're on your commute. >> time now 7:02. oakland police are searching for two people suspected of

shooting a man in oakland hours ago. it happened about 5:30 near 39th and international. police found a man who had been shot. now the man was rushed to the hospital. we don't have word at this point on his condition. also, there's no word on a possible motive behind the shooting. >> hayward fighters are investigating an overnight blaze at a sushi raft -- restaurant. it started near aa door and jackson street. firefighters noted heavy smoke when they arrived. the fire started in the kitchen. this morning caltrans is reporting the fifth fatality. they said an adult man was hit in san mateo at 1:00 this morning. 62 people were on board the southbound train at the time. traction were close -- tracks

were closed in both directions for about an hour. it's unclear why the man was on the tracks. a road in an american canyon is expected to reopen after a sewer line collapsed. it happens wednesday night at highway 29 and crawford way. sky eyechopper 2 is flying over it. the city officials brought out portable toilets for the residents to use. thousands of people are expected to take advantage of a free health clinic in oakland. if you need free medical care, you're advised to line up before midnight on the day you want to be seen to get a ticket. the four day event starts tomorrow and runs until tuesday

ago, so the bridge traffic is sloa. the good news, it is recovering. the best way to get to at&t park is to use public transportation. we're asking giants fans to be as courteous as possible to some of the people who are not giants fans. let's go out and take a look. northbound 101 approaching the spli. that traffic is okay. okay getting down to king street. if you're driving across the san mateo or dunbar ton, those are clear. highway 101 looks good up and down the peninsula. this will be mostly sunny today. it's cold out there but all right for the giants game. it's on its way to southern california, not before lingering showers. so there could be a passing shower, too. most of this is on the drier

alison burns. president obama's weekend plans may change if a government shutdown is not averted. the president had planned top spend the weekend in williamsburg, virginia with his family. it's a recreated 18th century village but the white house said the president's plans would be altered if the government is shut down. the effort to keep the don't ask, don't tell policy in place has failed. the house arms service committee held a meeting aimed at starting the new policy. however, the chiefs of the army, navy and airforce said the training was going smoothly. also, implementation is on track. one member compared the repeal to the massacre at the alamo. the quality of recruits is at its highest decade in two decades. 99% of recruits had a high

school diploma. that is up 91% in 2006. recruiters say part of the reason is the tough job market and a more stable situation in iraq. in arizona state legislationtors passed a bill allowing people to carry guns while walking or driving through state universities or college campuses. supporters say it's the best defense. a similar bill is being considered in texas. right now utah is the only state to allow guns at universities. a bay area congressman hopes pg&e carries out its threat to pull out of a $3 million settlement with the state public utilities commission. the puc agreed to the fine after the utility could not locate all the requested pipeline records. now pg&e said if the puc commission asks about its past

practices, it will demand a full hearing. we're now finding out that four more journalists were captured in libya by forces loyal to moammar gadhafi. two of them are americans. claire gillis is a free-lance writer and gamed foley reports for the post. witnesses said they were taken away by two photographs, one from spain, one from south africa. former president bill clinton is back in haiti today. he will tour a school and launch a national cholera awareness campaign. he is the united nations special envoy to haiti.

the conditions and bring the chains with you if you're going. well, jurors in the barry bonds' perjury trial are about an hour away from starting their dlib railings. ktvu's kraig debro is there to tell us what the jurors have to consider. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this is the first full day that the jurors will get this case and consider whether barry bonds lied or didn't lie in front of a dpj in -- grand jury in 2003. now bonds is facing three counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. originally he faced 14 conned -- counts. now there are three. the prosecutor said his motivation was to get strong and improve his stats. bonds didn't testify in his own

defense during the trial. the grand jury testimony in 2003 bonds said after his father died many people were trying to give him things to get through the tough times. he said greg anderson said try this cream. he came to the ballpark and said this will help you recover. he rubbed it on my arm and called it flax seed oil. i think a long shot would be all guilty, all not guilty. there's so much evidence on both sides, so many points made on both sides. that would be the surprising. the most likely could be a mixed verdict. it's tough to walk a defendant out of a criminal case with all not guilty counts. >> reporter: during the trial the prosecution brought in some former ball players who testified they had taken similar substances but they knew those substances were steroids or

steroid-like substance. barry bonds may be here about 8:15, 8:30. it's not clear if he will come down here for the start of the deliberation. reporting live in san francisco, kraig debro, ktvu. >> stay with ktvu for the trial. marin county sheriff's deputies are looking for a mother who abandoned her two daughters. the girls, ages two and nine months were reportedly filthy and hungry. the grandmother said her daughter, 23-year-old jennifer ross, sent a text saying she was homeless and couldn't keep them. the grandmother also said she could not care for them. so they're in child protection.

administration calls this a troubling event. it was april of 2010 when the oil rig exploded and oil spilled into the gulf of mexico. turning now to a story you'll see on channel 2. two men suspected of breaking into east bay storage units have been arrested. ktvu first broke the news of the thefts last month. 47-year-old gregory sherinan rented a storage locker. he and james bounds broke into other storage lockers. investigators say the break in the case came when an employee at public storage noticed one of them loitering on the property and called police. the alameda sheriff's department is trying to find the 30 owners of more than 1,000 owners. >> i didn't expect to get anything back. it was surprising when i got the phone call to come over here. >> detectives say there may be more arrests to come.

they are checking to see if this case is tied to others in the bay area. neighbors are rallying to help people devastated by a fire in the mission district. the owner of the low thus garden restaurant showed ktvu the water damage and charred walls. it started in a building next door and was fanned by strong winds. fire investigators say it appears the fire was accidental. neighbors have organized a fund-raiser for tonight at the he'll rio nightclub. more problems for the oakland police department. just before 8:00 yesterday morning the two-way radios went down. for hours officers could not contact with dispatch or each other. police say they implemented a backup system. the mayor said oakland is in the

process of installing a new system. a new report from the san francisco city controller's office predicts the city's budget deficit will keep growing if something isn't done about employee health and pension costs. the projected deficit for the upcoming fiscal year now stands at $306 million. it increases to $480 million for the 2012-2013 fiscal year and $642 million for the fiscal year after that. two golfers are tied at the top of the leader board after one round of the masters. they both shot a 7 under 65. the defending champion phil mickelson is five shots back. tiger woods is six back. that's a good position for both.

of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. originally he faced 14 counts against him. at the start of the trial there were four counts of perjury and now three. by now you've heard this phrase. bonds said he quote never knowingly took steroids. but bonds never said that. here's the exact exchange from his grand jury testimony. prosecutor, did you ever get any pill that is mr. anderson described has testosterone pills or fast acting pills that he called beads. bonds, no, not that i know of. i mean, he gave me package of pills. according to courtroom observers, it's difficult for them to tell where the jury will come down. the one we spoke to, william keen, said he thought this would

exclusive look inside the building to see first hand the prep work as the empty building was packed with explosives. each of the structures are embedded with four sticks of dynamite. the building closed in 1996, but it's about time they bring it down. there's 800 pounds of dynamite that will knock it down. they said it's been sitting under utilized but they have a lot to clean up. >> the building was con taming nateed with as -- contaminated with asbestos. the hospital is the last piece of that puzzle. >> reporter: they will take all of this stuff and crush and recycle it, every material and use them for the new development. if we can come back out here, the building closed in 1996. it basically sat there empty. they plan to build more than 900 structures and apartments, making it more livable. this will happen right after

grandmother's doorstep. the girls were ages two and nine months old. reportedly they were very dirty and very hungry. the grandmother says her daughter, 23-year-old jennifer ross sent her a text message saying she was homeless and couldn't take care of the babies. the grandmother said she also couldn't take care of the babies. now the children are in child protective services. >> the pressure is on for police to buy body armor. it provides federal help for law enforcement agencies to buy these vests. starting this month, police agencies must have a written mandatory wear policy in effect to qualify. now the justice department says these new rules are in response to a rise in police officer deaths. muni is taking action against the driver who was caught on camera texting behind

the wheel. the video was recorded by a passenger. it was a reflection from a mirror. the agency initially suspended the driver after pulling the bus over to take care of a family emergency. after seeing the video, muni says that's not the case a and she will be fired -- and she will be fired. more than 1.2 million drivers went through tolls without paying. the toll authority has a list of 800 chronic offenders, racking up 66 violations each and have more than $5,000 in unpaid fines. the agency has collected $2.6 million more through penalties than if drivers paid their tolls in the first place. >> the numbers are based on the millions of millions of cars that cross the bridges each year are fairly small.
