and good morning, to you i'm claudine wong. pam cook has the morning off. it's wednesday, april 15th let's start after your morning with a look at the weather. good morning mark. >> reporter: good morning, to you. we have partly to mostly cloudy skies across the bay area. most of the action way up to our north. but this will be drifting to the south throughout the morning hours and as a result showers will be developing. afternoon highs around 55-60 degrees. winds pick up from 15-20 miles an hour this afternoon. more on your drain drops later on traffic is moving along pretty well. we are starting off the morning with mostly good conditions for driving. as you can see traffic will be okay in san francisco along northbound 101. let's go back to claudine. we begin with overnight

news from the east bay where a fire broke out in a single story home. it happened around 2:30 this morning in bay point. one woman got out safely. firefighters are still on the scene at this hour. jade hernandez has been gathering more information about what happened. jade. >> reporter: claudine, firefighters are monitoring hot spots. it doesn't look like this home is destroyed but it is. the fire broke out a couple hours ago and the residents living in this home were very lucky. no phones in the home and no smoke detectors. the firefighters you are looking at poured water on the side house because the fire threatened the house next door. dispatch received a call about an outdoor house. we spoke to one of the occupants inside of the washington home. a man told us he walked down

stairs to get ice cream when he smelled was a burning cigarette. that's when he knew something was wrong. he couldn't call for help because he doesn't have any phones in his home. luckily he was able to get himself and his girlfriend and birds out safely. >> we went down stairs to get ice cream. there was no smoke noticeable at the time. by the time i got the ice cream and went back upstairs above the garage, we go i smell smoke. >> flames destroyed the home and the cause is still under investigation at this hour. the american red cross is helping the two people that lived inside of the home. we are told the firefighters will manage the hot spots in the home. new this morning investigators are trying to determine what triggered a hazmat scare. it happened last night at

madison gas. two separate alarms went off indicating the contamination of chlorine and another gas. >> there were minor adjustments to the safety measures in the plant. those were corrected. our personnel evacuated out. at this point in time, there is no hazard to any neighboring communities. >> it's still not clear how much dangerous gas if any was released. one plant worker was taken to the hospital for tests for possible breathing problems. an oakland bart station is back open after a man was hit by a train. they a calling it a suicide attempt. bart says the train operator hit a man that was lying on the tracks. passengers were delayed for 30 minutes and the station

reopened around 11:00 last night. a family of three is in the hospital after dramatic rescue in north bay point happened last night on highway 1 in sonoma county. a car plunged 70 feet down a cliff trapping a mother, father, and a young child inside that car. using ropes and baskets firefighters went down the cliff and rescued the family. a helicopter air lifted them. no word on their condition. a nevada man that is accused of killing four men this morning is supposed to appear in court this morning. he's accused of four cold case murders dating back to 1970s. the body of rock own was found along the road. naso struck again killing 42- year-old carmen in contra costa

county. prosecutors say they will try also for all four murders. >> the allegation of that special circumstance makes naso eligible for the death penalty under california law. >> prosecutors say they saw evidence inside home during a probation search linking him to those killings he is being held without bail. we did talk to the family of one of the bay areas victims. oxen's body -- roxene's body was found and the family had given up hope of finding a suspect. >> i thought it was just shoved under the rug and forgotten. because we had never heard anything all these years. >> naso's arrest is also

drawing attention in rochester,new york where he lived. three girls were killed there. stay within ktvu -- and stay with ktvu and ktvu.com for more. one of the four teenager charged with the killing of a high school student will appear in court. andy zang died open sunday. the four teens arrested for his death include a 15-year-old, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old. the chronical is reporting saying he was shot by one of the suspects. and the others tried to destroy the body and evidence by lighting a home on fire. a soldier is trying to get back personal items stolen by his car. that includes a laptop, clothing, and pictures of his

son. the message the soldier now has for the thief. the san francisco giants have raised nearly $70,000 to help brian stow. he was beaten outside of dodgers stadium two weeks ago. the money will go toward medical costs and other expenses. the paramedic still remains in a medically induced coma. the panel of eight women and four men will return to the courthouse in san francisco around 8:30 this morning. there have been no clues about what they have been doing or thinking and tensions are certainly mounting as everyone awaits this jury's decision. >> the jurors tend to spend a little more time we didn't rush to judgment we thought this through. >> at same time the longer the jury deliberates the more like

likely they are split on one of the accounts. time now is 4:38 let's head right back out to sal castaneda who is watching the roads. things look good? >> yes, they do. traffic is moving along pretty good around the bay area. if you're getting an early start it shouldn't be a problem for you on most roads. let's take a look at the east shore freeway. traffic is moving along nicely heading out to the mccarthur maze. the morning commute will be okay if you are driving on westbound bay bridge. and if you are driving on northbound 280 that is moving nicely. right now we do have mostly cloudy skies. a few scattered clouds out there and rainfall to our north. we will show you the timing coming up in a little bit.

morning showers out there. the winds pick up this afternoon. tomorrow partly cloudy skies and a little bump in the numbers. higher clouds could be moving over the bay area occasionally throughout the weekend. showers develop this morning into the afternoon hours some clearing and the winds pick up from 15-25 miles an hour. especially by late afternoon. here we go with our cloud and rainfall. by 4:00 we will show you clouds out there. i will clip the button and put this in motion. by 8:00 and 9:00 -- at 9:00 this morning and by 1:00 quickly moving to the south. this is light moderate showers at one time. at 1:00 the storm moving out of the bay area. we will have partly cloudage skies and dry conditions for this evening. a few clouds approaching the region so far. here is today's forecast

new this morning in japan the airport in the coastal city of sendai reopened today a little more than a month after a tsunami swamped the area there. the airport is only able to handle a few daytime flights. they swept cars and planes into terminals. in egypt hosni has been put under a 15 day suspension. two of the mubarak's sons have been put under detention. the egypt's top prosecutors it's into accusations of caption and authority and killing of protestors. president obama will reveal new details about how he plans to cut the nations $14 trillion

deficit. the president is expected to call for reductions in entitlement program and spending. president obama also wants to end the bush era tax cuts. house speaker john boehner has said any plan that raises taxes will not be welcomed by republicans. they call one president obama to not make any cuts to social security. social security does not contribute to the federal deficit and the group is also calling on mr. obama not to raise the retirement age. this morning college students will once again rally against budget cuts. this shows the community college students rallying against the cuts. similar rallies are planned for this morning at csu east bay and san jose state. other rallies are expected in colleges and universities across the country. the city of hercules is

preparing for major budget cuts. they swarmed the city to discuss the $6 million deficit. and for the first time in 20 years the city is considering laying off city employees. >> from what i hear this friday there will be pink slips going out effective may 1st and i think it will be 30% less reduction in city staff. >> the city has also been going through a financial scandal that started last fall. allegations over budgeted projects lead to the resignation of one city council member. last night the city attorney also announced his resignation saying he would no long very city support. city leaders are -- a sharply divided city council approved limits about where the shops can locate.

they will redistrict the pot clubs. this decision follows more than a year of heated debate. however the council still failed to support mayor chuck reid's efforts to shut down more than 90% of those shops. be on the lookout for a mountain lion. someone spotted the animal monday night. it may have been heading to portola green circle. the result of those sitings a safety meet willing be held tonight. officials from the department of fish and game, redwood city police department are expected to attend. that meeting starts at 7:30 and it's open to the public. mountain lion tracking has gone high-tech. they are installing hie definition cameras to keep an eye on mountain lions 24 hours a day. they are able to take clear

color pictures of roaming mountain lions throughout the day. they also use modern night vision technology to get black and white video of the big cats at night. >> many species in the wild don't come out until people are not around. >> they have 50 cameras posted all over the bay area. now to a story you will only see here on 2. a hayward soldier on leave from iraq is pleading for the person who stole his car to return it. california national guardsman car was taken from his driveway on monday. he says everything he owns was in that car and that includes clothes, laptop, and photos of his son. he has a message for the thief. >> give me my life back. that was my life. i'm over in iraq serving in iraq to help you out to give you the freedom to walk the

streets. you know. don't take that from me. >> dornath returned from iraq last week and goes back next week. it's a 1998 two door honda accord. license plate number 4xbg613. and the rear window has a sticker that says iraqi freedom veteran. splurge a popular bar in san francisco will close but the gay community is still trying to save it. 100 supporters gathered yesterday to save the eagle tavern. it's one of the city's oldest gay bar. when the bar reopens under new ownership it will not cater to the gay community. >> we're like a family here. and we help each other out. when we see someone in trouble we try to help them. >> supporters say the tavern is a popular community gathering spot.

all right welcome back. time now is 4:52. let's head out to sal castaneda with a look at your roads. >> things are looking pretty good out there. we are off to a nice start in the east bay here driving out to the tunnel. it looks pretty good and there are no major problems on the other side. also this mornings commute is looking okay if you are driving up the bay bridge toll plaza. that traffic is moving along very nicely. and on the peninsula the

traffic is okay here on highway 101. we are checking into a crash northbound 101 at sfo. this accident is reported to be blocking one of the lanes but it's not reported to have injuries. in fact, they are now moving off the off ramp. let's go to mark tamayo. streets are dry right now. we do have rainfall up to the north. and this coverage will be on the increase between now and 8:00 this morning. as far as current numbers just updated most of the region in the 40s. the warmest spot around r50 degrees in oakland and hayward. santa rosa around 44 degrees. here is the current conditions. doing a nice job with the rainfall up to our north. look at what happens at 10:00. the rainfall targeting the north bay. still dry in the south bay and continue to put this in motion just lingering drops it's all very light.

this is not a major deal. lingering drops into parts of the south bay. we will take this into your thursday. it should be dry with scattered high clouds out there. and then into friday you can see activity primarily up to the north. still quite a few clouds move into the bay area. it will be cooler. temperatures cooling off three to six degrees and at 8:00 this morning north bay showers. a chance with temperatures in the 40s. still a chance of lingering showers. by mid afternoon by 3:00 and 4:00 partly cloudy skies. there is the event temperature range. san francisco 56. san jose right around 60 and fremont 59. here is a look ahead your five- day forecast. temperatures will be warming up into the weekend. still quite a few clouds in place. a slice chance for a few north bay sprinkles friday into saturday. we'll take a look at the giants forecast.

claudine. meg whitman is wishing governor jerry brown good luck. she met the comments yesterday at a conference in dallas. despite the well wishes the former republican for governor said she would approach the budget differently for brown. today toyota will announce they will halt production in europe. the car company says it will suspend work at five plants from late april until early may. it's due to a slow down in parts. the company also recently announced it will suspend production in north america and japan. nissan and honda say they will also have to cut back on their european production. a bay area company is called the greenest in the company. they have claimed the top spot on green pieces which was just released yesterday. last year safeway ranked number four. green pea says safeway moved up

on the list because of its efforts to rebuild the safe supply. target took the number two spot on that list. chicken pocks could take some of the -- reserve guard steve blake is battling the contagious illness right now. there is fears that blake might have spread that to other players that did not have it before. now it could take two weeks before the players find out if they have the illness because that's how long it takes for the symptoms to show up. we continue to follow the developing new story about the fire. more details emerging about the suspected serial killer being held in marin.
