continue to sunnyvale. we don't have any major problems reported by chp. we do have an accident east 80 that is in the east bay. as we look at 280 traffic here it looks good. let's go back to the desk. topping our news an overnight house fire has displaced a bay couple and their birds. jade hernandez joins us live on how residents tried to fight that fire themselves. >> reporter: claw den, you can't -- claudine, you can't tell from the front of the home that the fire destroyed it. sparks ignited in the attic. the couple inside the home were very lucky without phones or smoke detectors they got out safely. initially firefighters poured water on the side of the home because the fire threatened the side next door.

firefighters arrived they realized the flames instead were effecting the home at 237 madison avenue. when firefighters pulled up they saw low hanging smoke. then they saw flames shooting out the back of the house. we spoke to one of the occupants. take a look at this. the man told us his girlfriend owns the house and neither smelled anything until he went to the ditch ton get ice cream. that's when he smelled a burning cigarette. later you will hear from the man that ran out of his home. our time is 6:02. new this morning investigators want to know the cause of a hazmat scare at a gas plant. this happened last night on central avenue in newark. two separate alarms went off and it indicates the friends of chlorine -- the presence of chlorine and another hazardous

gas. >> there was some minor adjustments to some of the safety measures in the plant. those were corrected. our personnel evacuated out. at this point in time there is no hazard to any neighboring communities. >> at this point it's not clear how much dangerous gas may have leaked if any. one plant employee was treated at a hospital for breathing problems. federal and state emergency officials are expected to visit the landslide in hercules. rainy weather caused the landslide destroying eight homes. residents of the other four homes have been asked to move out until the hillside can be fixed. a nevada man accused of killing four northern california women will appear in marin county superior court

today. joseph naso is accused of four cold case murders dating back to the 70s. the body of 18-year-old roxene was found in fairfax in 1977. naso struck again a year later killing 22-year-old carmen koa loan in contra costa county. prosecutors say they will try naso for all four murders at once. >> the four murder counters i have named each carrying a special circumstance for multiple murder. the allegation of that special circumstance makes naso eligible for the death penalty under california law. prosecutors say they found evidence inside of naso's home during a probation search. he's being held without bail at the marin county jail. splurge we talked to the family

-- we talked to the family of one of the bay area murder victims. the family had given up hope of finding a suspect. >> i say it was just shoved under the rug and forgotten. we had never heard anything all these years. >> naso's arrest is also drawing attention in rochester new york where he once lived. three girls were killed there in the 1970s. now if you want more information on the case you can go to our channel 2 website. you are also going to find video from the conference. in just a couple of hours, jurors will begin their fourth day of deliberations in the

barry bonds' perjury trial. the panel of eight women and four men will go back to the san francisco courthouse at 8:30 this morning. we have no clue about what they have been doing or thinking over the past couple days. tensions are mounting as everybody waits for the juries decision. >> as trials get a lot of publicity jurors like to spend a little bit more time so they can tell the world we didn't rush to judgment. >> at the same time, many league analysts say the longer the jury takes the more likely they will split on one of the counts. the are jurors are deciding if he gay false testimony. he tells a los angeles porks talk radio show the

attack was totally unrevoked. the 42-year-old paramedic still remains in a coma. the giants are raised $70,000 to help bryan stow. today a big restaurant chain will launch another fundraising campaign. chillies will donate 15% of sales to aid the cause. time is 6:06 today. president obama will lay out his plan for reducing the skyrocketing federal deficit. coming up at 6:15 we will bring you a live report from washington, d.c. with the criticism the president is already getting from republicans and even some democrats. students at several bay area universities may ditch class to take part in rallies against school budget cuts. kraig debro is live in san jose state with more of the rallies taking close to home and all over the country.

>> reporter: when students leave class to protest they always tell me it's a form of education they are there standing up for their rights. according to the csu system the proposed cuts add up to 18% fewer dollars over last years fiscal year. they also say the cuts would restrict access to classes and services for students that do attend. students at public universities have stood up since the cuts began years ago. governor brown released his state budget in january, it left out $500 million for the state university system. it's not just csu, it's uc. there are proposed cuts for uc for $500 million and another $400 million for community colleges. the proposed cuts assume a voter tax extension. it seems the governor tried to

promote it wherever he goes. >> things are so dismal when it comes to getting republicans and democrats working together. that is a problem. but today we have something that is a real sick suses story. it's california leading the country. it's america potentially leading the world. >> reporter: approval of the measure would collect an additional $10 billion for the budget. the protest here at san jose university protests all around the csu system begins at noon following a rally here. we will try to reach one of the organizers and talk to him for one of our later reports. reporting live in san jose kraig debro. time now is 6:09. let's head back out to sal castaneda who is watching problems on the carquinez bridge. >> that crash is gone but it has been replaced.

president obama will propose tax increases and changes to medicare as he outlined his plan to cut the federal deficit. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with strong reaction the president is already getting from republicans and democrats in congress. allison. >> reporter: president obama is meeting this morning with congressional leaders at the

white house giving them a heads up on his new plan to reduce the $14.2 trillion deficit. the white house is not giving us a lot of specifics yet but says the president wants to cut excess spending on medicare and medicaid. lower domestic spending overall and increase taxes on wealthier americans. the president will reportedly include some of the recommendations from his bipartisan debt commission. the tax increases are a nonstarter. i spoke to one democratic senator says the battle we watched over this years budget that almost lead to a government shut down is just a preview of what is to come. >> strap on your seat belts because we are ready to do this again for the next years budget and it's going to be brought to a head when the debt ceiling is going to have to be raised in a couple months. >> reporter: also very unhappy about the president's approach is many of his fellow democrats

groups like move on and progressive change campaign are threatening to sit out his 2012 reelection bid. reporting live alison burns. time now 6:16. a recent budget deal in washington will have a huge impact on the bay area. the deal reached by the white house and congressional leaders to prevent a government shut down calls for cuts that will deeply effect low income bay area families. the city of oakland alone can lose $9 million in federal funding for low income housing and other services. time now 6:17. today a spokesman for the rebels in libya urge the u.s. military to take a more active role in the nato lead air campaign in libya. a rebel spokesman said that before a beginning of an international meeting. the rebel spokesman says the u.s. responded quicker to rethreats on civilians when it was in charge of that air

strike campaign. united states turned over responsibility for the air strikes to nato back on march 31st. for in egypt former president hosni mubarak is under a 15 day detention. mubarak is being detained at the hospital. that's where he was taken yesterday. reportedly suffering from heart problems. two of his sons have been detained out of a prison in cairo. egypt's chief prosecutor says the tensions are part of that. time now 6:18 mourners will gather to say a final farewell to a slain oakland restaurant owner. before that there is going to be a procession from campos' fruitvale area restaurant. police say campos was shot and killed outside of his business during an attempted robbery

last friday. a $32,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrests. time now 6:18 for the second time in a week a muni bus driver has been fired. it happened recently. the driver reportedly screamed at a couple and then ordered them to get off the bus when they tried to get on with their child in a stroller. the driver had only been working for the company for six months. last month a driver was fired for texting while driving a bus. cleaner trains, quieter rides, and more reliable escalators and elevators. that is thanks to a budget surplus that will allow bart to investigate more money in improving the trains. bart has projected a huge

good morning, right now traffic is moving well on highway 4 getting up to the willow pass grade. we already do have slow traffic in antioch westbound. time now is 6:25. three kayakers are safe this morning after being rescued from the chilly waters near at & t park in san francisco. they rented kayaks at pier 40 but got in trouble when the kayaks flipped over. the coast guard rescued them and took them to a local hospital. a hayward soldier on leave in iraq is pleading now for the person who stole his car to give it back.

wednesday, april 13th. i'm dave clark. >> & i'm congress -- and i'm claudine wong. and over night fire chased two people and their pets out of their home. ktvu jade hernandez is joining us live to talk about where they think the fire began. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters left an hour ago. flames destroyed the home. i want to go straight to video. firefighters fought flames from spread together house next door. when fight fires arrived they realized the flames were -- they found low hanging smoke. as they drove by they saw the flames shooting out the backside of the home. we spoke to the beetle yankee that explained the biggest open staff call this morning. >> the biggest challenge is the wind we have that accelerates

the fire. in the older homes it was up in the attic. >> reporter: we spoke to one of the occupants a man that carried his three birds out of his burning home safely. his girlfriend owns the house and none of them smelled anything until he went to the ditch ton get ice cream. >> to i grabbed the hose and i started squirting it up through the air vent. we don't have a telephone. we couldn't dial 911. >> reporter: you can see the top of the house is burned. this fire is not suspicious. fire investigators are expected to be back at the home later to find a cause. sparks ignited in the attic. reporting live jade hernandez. time now 6:32. the rockridge bart station in oakland is open again this by a train. bart police say this was a

suicide attempt. bart says the train operator hit a man that was laying on the tracks. firefighters say when they got there the victim was trapped under the train and more than a dozen firefighters worked to get him out. >> we had to deenergize the tracks, separate the cars, and extra date him from underneath. >> we don't have any word on the victims condition. the station reopened after 11:00 last night when passengers were delayed for 30 minutes. that incident is not expected to effect this mornings commute. four teens accused of killing a high school student will be in court this morning. andy zeng died over the weekend. the four teens arrested for his death include two 15-year-olds, a 17-year-old, and an 18-year- old. authorities believe the others tried to get rid of the body and evidence by setting the

house on fire. the napa sheriffs department says 47-year-old william died monday night after staff members responded to a report of him attacking another inmate. earlier this year workers at napa state hospital were demanding more security. one of those attacks left a technician dead. officials in san jose finally moving ahead to restrict medical marijuana shops. yesterday a sharply divided city council approved limits on where the shops can locate. the proposal would restrict the pot clubs largely to commercial zones. that decision follows a year of a very hot debate. the city council still failed to support mayor chuck reid to shut down the shops. the cutbacks were announced

last night following talks between district leaders and representatives of the teachers union. they include furlough days in may which will eliminate three days of classes for students. the details have not been announced. student protests against budget cuts at bay area universities are scheduled to get under way this morning. kraig debro is live at san jose state with a preview of the big event expected there. >> reporter: thanks claudine. i spoke to one of the representatives one of the organizers of one of the protest rallies that are taking place all over california and the nation. he tells me this rally will start around noon back in here under the arch way and around to the tommy smith and john carlos statue. seven of the nine bargaining units where public university students will be here for that rally in march. the reason they are standing at

the statue was because they are two students -- they will be joining in taking part. they are protesting proposed budget cuts. jerry brown approved an 18% cut to the csu budgets. that would represent $500 million. they will march downtown to san jose downtown san jose and come back to san jose state university to make their point. reporting live in san jose kraig debro. 6:36. a dramatic rescue in the north bay after a car plunged off the cliff. firefighters say the car plunged 70 feet trapping a mother, father, and young child in that car. rescue crews went down the hill to save the family. the highway patrol says it arrested the driver of the car for dui. it's not clear if that was the

welcome back. here's a quick look at the top stories we following for you right now. just hours ago a house fire. this one here in bay point chased two people and three pet birds out into the street. it happened around 2:00 a.m. on madison avenue. firefighters think it starletted in the home -- it started in the homes attic. we're finding out more about the brutal attack on giants fan bryan stow. a friend that was with stow at the time says the attack was totally unrevoked. bryan stow remains in a medically induced coma. in a big speech today president obama will outline his plan to reduce the federal

deficit. he's expected to call on raising taxes on the wealthy. that is something republicans say they will not support. arraignment is scheduled this afternoon for a suspected serial killer that is accused of killing four northern california women. joseph naso is accused of killing four women back in the 1970s. roxene was found in fairfax back in 1977. he struck again a year later killing 22-year-old carmen. he's also accused of killing pamela and tracy of uba county. they found evidence inside his home during a probation search. >> an examination of the items seized along with the results of a forensic analysis from the criminalistic laboratory lead marin investigators to connect naso with the death of rogash.

mountain lion. there have been several other sitings. because of that a safety meet willing be held that night. officials from the department of fish and game, redwood city police, and the sheriffs department is scheduled to be there. that meeting begins at 7:30. mountain lion tracking has gone high-tech here in the bay area. one group is installing high definition cameras like that one to keep an eye on mountain lions 24 hours a day. the very same cameras also use modern light vision for daytime. >> many species don't come out when people are around. >> right now the group has 50 cameras positioned at mountain

lion hot spots all over the bay area. next time they plan to add a few more. 6:46. in japan today the airport in the coastal city of sendai reopened a month after a tsunami swamped the runways. airport staff was out to welcome the first flight to land in weeks. the airport is only able to handle a few daytime flights. the air important restaurant and facility are closed. lab results just confirmed their human remains two more sets of remains found. police now have found ten bodies. all of the victims have been female. four of them known to be prostitutes. police started searching that year after a 24 year prostitute disappeared after she agreed to meet clients she met on craigs

welcome back now. a popular bar in san francisco is about to close however the gay community is trying to save it. about 100 supporters gathered on the steps of san francisco's city hall yesterday. it's all in an effort to save the eagle tavern. it's one of the city's oldest gay bars. many long-time patrons and employees are worried when the bar reopens it won't cater to the gay community. the people that go to the bar says it has evolved over the years and accepts everyone. it's a popular gathering spot. it's hosted weekly events to benefit causes such as aids treatment, hospice care, and breast cancer prevention. the bar is scheduled to close at the end of the month. a nevada man who is accused of four murders dating back to the 1970s will be in court

today. tara moriarty is live now in san rafael where he is set to be arraigned. >> reporter: joseph naso is being held at the marin county jail without bail. he is going to hear the charges against him for the first time this afternoon. he is accused of killing four northern california women between 1977 to 1994. the marin county district attorney says the coldest case is of 1-year-old rock -- of 18- year-old roxene. then carmen turned up in contra cast that county. she is also accused of killing -- now at a news conference in marinade photographs and writing town thought -- convinced them to investigate
