happens. good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. some college students across the bay area and across the country, in fact, will not be in class today. instead, they are planning on taking part in protests against budget cuts to higher education. ktvu's channel 2's kraig debro is live at san jose state with a look at what we can expect this morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. one of several campuses across the system today, the chancellor says if voters don't approve extension of tax measures, things will get worse. college and faculty says they need to address the current number, $500 million in cuts they will be doing that here at san jose state and at csu universities across the state.

the officials will meet at noon. according to governor brown's proposed budget, the csu and uc systems are set to get $500 million less from higher education budget -- from the higher education budget. the governor has proposed a system. similar protests are taking place in other states, including, new york, michigan and ohio. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. overnight in bay point, two people were forced to run for their lives after a fire swept through their home. this happened on madison avenue. when the firefighters got to the scene, they saw the flames shooting out the back of the

home. they say the home's old age made it tough to get to the attic where the sparks ignited. firefighters say this is not a suspicious fire. investigators are expected to go back to the house to try to find out what caused this. it is 7:02. new this morning, investigators are trying to determine what triggered a hazmat scare at an east bay gas plant. it lapped last night at mathieson gas on central avenue in newark. alameda county firefighters say two two separate alarms went off indicating the presence of chlorine and another gas. the hazmat teams quickly raced to the scene and quickly got things under control. >> there were some minor adjustments to the safety measures in the plant. these were corrected. our personnel evacuated out. at this point in time theirs no hazard to any -- there's no hazard to any neighboring community. >> it's still not sure how much

gas was released. but one worker was taken to the hospital for tests for possible breathing problems. highway patrol officers are investigating a deadly crash in san jose. it happened on southbound 880 near the north 1st street exit near midnight. the chp says a car crashed into the center median and overturned, killing the driver. no word on the victim's identity or what may have caused the crash. a dramatic rescue in the north bay to tell you about. a car plunged over a cliff. this happened last night on highway 1 in sonoma county. now, the car plunged 70 feet off the cliff trapping a mother and a young child in the car. rescuers went down the cliff to save them. they were airlifted to a hospital in santa rosa. the highway patrol says they arrested the driver of the car for dui but it's still not clear if that's the mother or father involved in the car.

a arraignment is scheduled in marin county for a suspected killer. 77-year-old joseph naso is accused of four cold-case murders in northern california dating back to the 1970s. the first victim was found near fairfax in 1977. authorities say naso struck a year later in contra costa county. two more victims were found in yuba county in the '90s. now police in new york are wondering if naso was responsible for three unsolved murders there. he used to live in rochester and traveled around that area for work. coming up at 7:30 we'll have a live report and more information on the victims naso is accused killing. we'll also hear from a man locally who says he knew naso. plummer has been sacked for the 9ers annalist.

months now that he's not leading on one of the most pressing issues of the day, reducing the skyrocketing federal deficit. today, he will outline what aides call his vision for reducing the deficit. we're still waiting for details from the white house. but the white house says he wants to cut excess spending on medicare and medicaid, lower domestic spending overall, including on defense, and increase taxes on wealthier americans. president obama will -- will reportedly include some recommendations from his bipartisan debt-cutting commission. but on capitol hill, democrats are worried the president is giving up too much. republicans don't like the tax increases but they like the budget cuts and entightentment reforms -- entitlement reforms. >> americans don't want to hear the president's vision today. he's had two years to lay that out. they want to hear his plan. >> reporter: now, it is unclear how much detail we will get

detention. he's being detained at the hospital where he was taken yesterday, reportedly suffering from heart problems. two of his sons have been detained in a prison outside cairo. now, demonstrators have been calling for the investigation of the mubarak family. egypt's chief prosecutor says the detentions are part of the investigation into accusations of corruption, abusive authority and killing protesters. well, the state department says another u.s. citizen is being cold in -- held in north korea. so far, we don't no who it is or what the person was doing in north korea. the state department says swedish officials visited the detained american on behalf of the u.s. now, in the past, former presidents jimmy carter and bill clinton, went to north korea and successfully negotiated the release of detained americans. a south dakota correctional officer is dead after two inmates tried to make a prison break. this all happened yesterday in sioux falls. few details about the attempted

escape have been released but a we do know that the 63-year-old officer worked at the sioux falls penitentiary for more than 20 years. the prison is now on lockdown while the investigation into the attempted breakout continues. some state lawmakers are trying again to repeal california's open carry law which allows people to carry unloaded guns in public. a bill to ban open carry of guns in public passed a state assembly committee yesterday and now heads to the assembly for approval. there was chaos in the trial of two brothers accused of a triple murder thanksgiving five years ago in oakland. now, this is what happened in the courtroom. you see the faces of the men in court. they are accused of killing wife of another. they said we need justice

sprinkle. another forecast update coming up. 7:24. real tragic story coming from new york. police say a mother intentionally drove her minivan into the hudson river, drowning herself and her three youngest children. reportedly she had a fight at home last night, then loaded her kids into the minivan. now, the police just held a news conference and thrust announced that the woman's 10 -- and just announced that the woman's 10-year-old son and another woman were able to escape, get out of the van before it went into the water. this was just announced a couple of minutes ago. we'll get more details and bring them to you as soon as we get them. a sea lion found on marin county beach that managed to survive a gunshot wound to the head is really beating the odd. "sigh lendsilent night "has been recouping in the care center. but they say he's doing -- recovering in the care center. but they say he's been doing so bell, he will be moving out.

the rockridge b.a.r.t. station is back open after a man was hit by a train. and b.a.r.t. police are calling it a suicide attempt. b.a.r.t. said the train operator reported hitting a man who was lying on the tracks around 10:00 last night. we don't know the victim's condition. but firefighters say he was alive when rushed to the hospital. the station reopened around 11:00 last night. an autopsy could be performed today on a napa inmate. he died monday night after staff members responded to a report of him attacking another inmate. earlier this year, napa workers

were demanding more security because of attacks on employees, one of those attacks killed a psychiatric technician. 7:29. officials in san jose finally moving ahead to restrict mel marijuana shops -- medical marijuana shops. the proposal would restrict the pot clubs largely to industrial and commercial zones. this decision follows after a year of very hot debate. the mount diablo school board unanimously approved some big budget cuts. the cuts followed talks between district officials and representatives of the teachers union and include furlough days in may and that had eliminate three days of classes for studentsle all of the details -- students. all of the details have not yet been announced. the bay area could soon be

home to the largest solar energy farm in the united states. a pleasanton-based energy company wants to build a 200 acre complex in eastern alameda county, north of instate -- north of instate -- north of interstate 580. the mountain house solar farm would reduce solar pans who i would reduce enough electricity for 250,000 homes. the energy company plans to provide for a conditional-use permit in the next few weeks. in about two hours, federal and state emergency officials are expected to visit the site of a landslide in hercules. this is new video of the area. this officials are expected to tour the slide scene and make sure disaster fund will be used for homeowners. rainy weather in late march is being blamed for the landslide. four homes have been declared uninhabitable and residents of four more homes have been asked to move out until a hillside can be fixed.

stocks are bouncing back after yesterday. the big reason for the increase, high numbers from j.p. morgan. anything that helps the banks is certainly good for investors. right now, the dow is up 25, nasdaq up 15. the s&p was up 2.5. consumer spending increased 4-point -- .4% last monthby that shrank when gas station -- last month but that shrank when gas station reports came out.

in mexico, 116 bodies found buried near the u.s. border. police say the deaths are lee lated to the ongoing violence between drug cartels in mexico. 17 suspects have been detained in connection with the killings. police say some of the suspected confessed to abducting passengers from buses and killing them. it is 7:45. we're learning more details about the attack on a long-time giants' fan at dodgers stadium. claudine wong has more details that come from a witness. >> that's right. these new details come from a friend of brian stow's who was with him at the time of the attack. stow's friend told a leaks sports talk radio station -- los angeles sports talk radio station, saying the attack was totally unprovoked. he said, we were uncomfortable and wanted to get out there. he said they were talking when

a gushing crime at an historic -- a disturbing crime at an historic cemetery at the marysville cemetery. vandals damaged headstones. it appears they used a rope to put around the tombstones and tied that to a truck. the coast guard is searching for two men reported missing after a sailing trip near los angeles. albert bosco and kirk williams were traveling from dana point to santa catalina island. family members last heard from them on monday, when their sailboat was reported 0 be within nine miles of catalina island. bosco told his family if the pair had not returned by tuesday to contact the coast guard. a couple in santa cruz county want to know why someone shot an arrow through the head of their head.

overturned, killing the driver. no word on the victim's identity or what may have caused the crash. the california federation of teachers is under attack for its support of a former black panther who is now on death row for murder of a police officer in philadelphia. the individual was convicted of the 1981 fatal shooting of the philadelphia police officer. he's fought the conviction for years. he's a journalist. his supporters say there's plenty of evidence proving he's innocent. the federation adopted a resolution at its annual conference to reaffirm that it supports the individual. arraignment is scheduled in marin county for a suspected serial killer 77-year-old joseph naso is accused of four cold case murders around northern california dating back to the 1970s. the first victim was found near fairfax in 1977. authorities say naso struck a

driving on highway 4 in eastern contra costa county is bad enough. it's itsed as one of the worse commutes in the bay area and now drivers on can expect even worse delays at least in the first few weeks. jade hernandez joins us live to explain why. >> good morning, we've been watching traffic for an hour now. caltrans shut down a lane on highway. you can see to my left, the electronic message board directing traffic away from the inside lane. drivers you are warned. one lane of eastbound traffic will be closed between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 in the afternoon between bailey road and railroad avenue over the next few weeks. westbound traffic will be closed from 1:00 p.m. million 4:00 in the afternoon. b.a.r.t.'s project will eventually carry passengers from the pittsburg/bay point station to a station off hillcrest and antioch. that's yet to be built. so the station has planned one

trial as jurors enter their fourth day of deliberations. claudine wong has more on waiting game. good morning, claudine. >> good morning. you know, every time is a deliver is in deliberations legal analysts are left to predict what it all means, things like what testimony has been read back, what evidence has been reexamined. but the experts will tell you it's all really just a guessing tie. we want to take you out live to our camera at the san francisco federal courthouse. the crews are lined up. they are waiting for barry bonds to arrive. we do expect him to head to court today because really he's been there every day obviously during the trial and during the day in these deliberations. this is day 4. we can show you video of barry bonds arriving. 's pay lint just comes into the courthouse an just waits -- he apparently just comes into the

courthouse and just waits. the jury is still trying to decide if bonds is guilty of three counts lying to a grand jury and one count of obstruction of justice and they are trying to germ if -- determine if he lied when he told the grand jury he never knowingly took performance- enhancement drugs. ten people have been convicted in connection with the investigation. but in the only two other trials, both defendants have agreed to plea deals. so bonds's case has the distinction lasting the longest. legal experts say we could be looking at a split verdict. but they also say it would be very surprising if they didn't come to any decision at all.
