guilty verdict on obstruction of justice. >> i barely knew who barry bonds was and based solely on the evidence, there wasn't enough to say he was guilty. >> reporter: the two males fans described themselves as giants fans. >> if you choose to continue using performance enhancing drugs, we're going to go after you at this point. let's level the playing field. >> reporter: several jurors told us they personally felt he was guilty on all four counts, but the evidence was not there. on the count of whether he knew he was injected with steroids, they came close to a guilty verdict. it was 11-1 for a conviction. >> covering the investigation since the very beginning. there as bonds learned his fate today inside a courtroom in san francisco. >> reporter: that's right,

frank. it's now been just three hours since barry bonds left the federal building here as a convicted felon. smiling barry bonds and his lead attorney shook hands for the media after the conviction, then he auto graphed a baseball for a fan. >> barry has wanted very much to address you directly, but as you saw, the case isn't over. >> reporter: that's because of the split decision in court. first jurors announced they were hopelessly deadlocked on three charges against bonds of lying to a grand jury when he said he never knowingly used steroids or hue gran growth hormone. neither bonds nor his mother showed any outward emotion as jurors then said they unanimously found bonds guilty of one count of obstruction of justice. >> the counts which allege steroids, which allege needles, which allege human growth

hormone, those with mistried. there was no conviction, no finding adverse to barry bonds. >> reporter: the prosecutor, u.s. attorney melinda hague issued a quote. in the united states, taking an oath and promising to testify truthfully is a serious matter. we cannot ignore those who choose instead to obstruct justice. he says there's been no decision on whether to retry him on the three counts the jury deadlocked on. >> the obstruction of justice count carries a maximum of 10 years in prison. federal guidelines call for only 15-21 months in prison. similar offenses brought only a sentence of home confinement ranging from six months to a year. that's only if bonds lawyers

don't succeed in getting the conviction thrown out. sentencing could take several months. >> talked with a legal analyst follow tailgate the verdict and we are joined now with that part of the story. >> reporter: as barry bonds left the courthouse, he acknowledged the support of his fans. touting the single conviction as a victory because the jury deadlocked on three other charges that he lied he told a 2003 grand jury he'd never knowingly used steroids. he originallablely faced nine charges. legal analysts tell us both bonds and federal prosecutors have reason to celebrate the jury's verdict today. >> i'm assuming what they're saying is he may not have known he was telling a direct mistruth, but his answers were an attempt to mislead or misdirect the grand jury's investigation. >> you need only one count for

guilty, then you proceed to sentencing. the prosecution, you know, it's an ugly result, but it's a result where the prosecution will claim victory. >> reporter: bonds could expect to see a sentencing date as far ahead as four months from now. his defense team plans to challenge the decision today in appellate court. >> barry bonds former trainer and life-long friend greg anderson has been a prominent figure in this case. he refused to testify just like he did back in 2006. he was released last friday. jurors did get to hear a tape recording of anderson describing injecting barry bonds. >> it all began with the bay area laboratory cooperative.

federal agents raided that lab in 2003. three others would eventually plead guilty for distributing the compounds the company developed. the case against barry bonds stems from that 2003 raid. in december 2003, bonds testified to a federal grand jury investigating the lab. in november 2007, bonds was indicted on perjury connected to his testimony. his trial began about four weeks ago and today the jury returned its verdict. >> barry bonds ties to the bay area goes beyond his time in a giants uniform. his father played for the team and willie mays is his god father. he spent seven seasons with the pittsburg pirates and returned to the bay area in 1993 when he signed with the giants as a

tied up employees, and made off with $40 million in computer chips. they're all behind bars facing life in prison. live now in fremont. why this case and other high- tech crimes are far from over. >> reporter: we are in fremont, a leading company. a lot of memory chips are stored here and that attracted the robbery ring. the company seemed secure with guards at the entrance and roaming the grounds. a task force said security measures didn't stop armed masked men from tieing up workers and hauling off $37 million in flash memory chips. they arrested five suspects. >> they were in excess of 15 suspects involved in the

unanimously approved big budget cuts. district leaders and representatives met last night to improve contracts to eliminate three days of classes for students. hold a series of community meetings on mondays and wednesdays to discuss more budget redictions. concerns about coyotes now that a trapper is no longer on the job. live with what may be behind an increase in sightings. >> reporter: hi there. we are in a green belt neighborhood. these green belt areas have no development. that's one of the reasons why

neighbors are concerned. they say coyotes use these areas as highways to get around town. >> this is a breeding place. >> reporter: al rose fixed this steel guard over his screen door after his indoor cat was terrorized by a coyote stalking her through the window. >> he was under that bench over there and then just stroll out this way, went out that way. >> reporter: another time, a coyote surprised rose with his agility. >> there's a fence right here. what one of them did was apparently got on the fence on this side and was peaking over here. >> reporter: animal control told us this morning they are getting more calls about coyotes. neighbors are worried the animals may be killing and eating household pets. the trappers they used to call is no longer available.

they could call on state or federal experts if they were needed in a pinch. the staff at the wildlife museum has been treating this coyote pup separated from his mother. coyotes are looking for an easy meal. >> dawn and dusk are for the best time for them to go out hunting. if your cat's out, it's prey. >> reporter: you can see the urban interface. this green belt here could easily conceal dozens of coyotes. nevada is cracking down on graffiti. property owners there 10 days instead of 20 to remove graffiti from their buildings. the city reserves the right to step in, clean it up, and recover the cost from the

business owner. concerned about the future of the diablo nuclear power plant. to withdraw its license renewal plant. the state senator is asking federal regulators to delay the rely sensing process. >> a few hundred yards away from the facility. >> the reactors licenses expire in 2024 and 2025. pge says the nuclear plant there can withstand a 7.5 magnitude quake. just like bill called it, we got a little rain today. >> a little bit of rain. some areas like san francisco got over a 10th of an inch of rain. the roadways were wet out there

for the morning commute. some of these clouds will filter into the bay area forecast over the next 48 hours and that could lead to a slight chance of sprinkles. we'll be watching that one. i think we're fine, but lots of clouds in the air. highs tomorrow come up 5-6 degrees. tomorrow looks like a nice day. the weekend looks nice as well. the question right now will be friday in terms of cloud cover and maybe a bit of drizzlable out there. 34 in santa rosa will get you some frost. chilly start to your morning for your thursday. the jet stream is to the north. we'll see thursday through saturday are clouds that will shoot down over the top of us giving us a hazy filter of sunshine and keeping temperatures on the mild to cool side. by saturday we might see a low 70. here's what we got.

thursday morning, i want to show you the cloud cover. thursday afternoon, more clouds. a lot of sprinkle activity up north and then we get into friday morning. you see rain developing up here maybe as far south as cloverdale. you see, we're just on the southern edge of this whole deal. clouds in the forecast. that's why i can't forecast upper or mid-70s. the cloud cover will be with us through sat. sunday looks like the nicest day. this could change a little bit over the next few days, but you get the basic idea. we're watching friday for the best chance of sprinkle, but it's not in the five-day forecast. 65 in san jose. mostly to partly sunny skies tomorrow and friday with more clouds. as we head into the weekend, sunday looks like your best day

with temperatures eking to the low 70s. >> thank you. we have some breaking news. ktvu is getting reports that an american citizen is being detained in north korea. he was arrested in november for committing a crime against the government and authorities are now preparing to indict him. they gave no further details. famous director francis ford copolla is is target of a new lawsuit. saying they haven't been paid for the work they did there. an attorney said the winery has paid most of its bills, but there is a dispute over the final invoices. people are moving out of their parents homes and renting their own places.

oakland is encouraging its residents and businesses to go green. hosted the 17th annual earth expo next to city hall. dozens of local organizations ranging from business to community groups set up booths to educate people on environment alice shoes. to celebrate earth day, sponsoring clean ups at more than 40 locations this weekend. the giants have a more modest goal, just trying to reach 500. >> outside the ballpark at att park with a live report. hi, joe. >> reporter: you know, one word that professional sports teams despise is the word distraction. the giants have done everything in their power to be sure the barry bonds jury trial and the verdict today will not become a distraction. one thing that's undisputable

is the fact that bonds is one of the best baseball players of all time in one of baseball's most controversial eras. 73 single season home runs in 2001. he's baseball's all-time home run leader with 762. we all know about the verdict today about guilty of one charge of obstruction of jus the dis. as you can imagine, the giants don't have an official comment but they did feel a kinship toward bonds. >> i know barry's got to be glad that this is over and now it's time for everybody in major league baseball barry to move on and move forward. >> it's real tough to be in a situation like that. i don't have a comment on that. i've never been in that position. i wish him the best. >> reporter: there aren't that many giants left on this team

that ever played with bonds. as far as the giants are concerned, they're worried more about the dodgers. the as finished up a nine-game road trip this afternoon in chicago. they went to the #th inning trailing 4-1. they scored one run and then a base hit, then a 4-4 game. they head to the 10th. things worked out pretty well for the as in the 10th as well. the as won it by a final score of 7-4 in 10 innings. the as win 5-9 on that long road trip. the giants wrapping things up as far as this home stint is concerned. a lot of things that happened other than baseball and the barry bonds verdict today just one of those. reporting live from att park in
