claudine. we are continuing to watch a developing story in vallejo where firefighters have been monitoring a fire at a vacant car dealership. that fire had been burning for hours and still smoldering now. this happened yesterday around 1:00. ktvu's jade hernandez is there now with what's happening right now and what firefighters are planning this morning. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. about 20 minutes ago we watched a big flair up right here at this dealership. when we pulled up this morning we could see the smoke and smell it. as early as tomorrow this building could be torn down. it's been burning since yesterday afternoon at 1:00 as claudine mentioned. it's the third fire in three weeks. the vallejo fire department investigators believe someone was cutting metal out of the building possibly using a butane torch which sparked flames. garbage and debris inside reached three feet in some spots. that's one of the reasons why firefighters believe this

building could be -- could continue to burn this morning. to give you some background, the cadillac dealership closed two years ago and became a sort of last resort refuge for homeless people. about 50 people are left without a place to stay now that flames are bringing down the building. vallejo firefighters couldn't do much about the fire inside the former dealership because the building was already deemed unsafe. >> we know that from previous inspections that the building's not structurally sound. we know people are dumping illegal hazardous materials in the building. we know there's human waste in the building. so to put somebody inside on hose lines would just be ridiculous. >> reporter: vallejo firefighters snapped these pictures of the burning structure long after they were called to the area yesterday afternoon. crews let people living inside at one point to get their belongings, but this dwelling will soon be gone leaving some homeless wondering where they go next. coming up a squatter's story about life inside of that

former car dealership. live in vallejo, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning lawyers on both sides of the barry bonds case are already planning their next move. yesterday a jury in san francisco convicted baseball's all time home run leader of obstruction of justice. but it deadlocked on three perjury charges. prosecutors say they are going to decide whether or not to seek a retrial on those charges pretty quickly. the defense is already planning their appeal. >> they'll be studying very carefully appellate grounds to challenge the guilty verdict on the obstruction count given that the underlying evasive statement was not actually in the original indictment. >> bonds remains free while he awaits his sentencing date. he faces a possible two year prison term but most legal experts predict he's much more likely to be sentenced to nothing more than house arrest. a judge has scheduled a hearing for may 20th to discuss the future of this controversial case. now we were hard press today find any giants players or

hair and rounded nose. that attack took place saturday night. police believe the attacker got into the apartment through an unlocked door. accused serial killer joseph naso due back in court to enter a plea. yesterday the 77-year-old reno photographer made his first appearance in a marin county courtroom. at one point he looked up, spotted the camera and you can see him there he covered his face. he is accused of killing four women in northern california dating back to the 1970s. prosecutors have yet to decide whether they'll seek the death penalty. >> everything about the individual and background will have bearing on what our ultimate decision is, yes. >> his arrest has drawn national attention because his alleged victims in northern california all have the same initials in their first and last names. authorities are also looking into the possibility that these linked to the so-called double initial killings in the rochester, new york, killer in the early 70s, those crimes

inspire the 2008 film called the alphabet killer. pg&e says customers could be in danger if it's ordered to reduce pressure on more natural gas pipelines. the utility says dropping levels on certain pipes could lead to uncontrolled outages. that could cause pilot lights to go out and natural gas could seep into homes and businesses. regulators are considering pressure reductions after pg&e failed to produce records in the wake of deadly san bruno disaster. using less may cost san franciscans more. posing an increase of 47% increase on water bills. that's because people are using less water and that has meant lost revenue. already scheduled to see a 12% rate increase starting in july. the puc is scheduled to vote on this latest proposal next month. sfo's brand new terminal two officially goes into business this morning. the first two departures are american airlines flights to dallas-fort worth and miami. now both flights are leaving

at 280 at this time and it's a very nice drive right through downtown san jose driving into the west valley. 4:38. let's go to mark. hi, sal. good morning to you. all is quiet in our weather world for today with a dry forecast. just a few high clouds pushing into the bay area. we're going to stick with that theme as we head into the weekend with partly to mostly cloudy skies for tomorrow. temperatures you will notice change beginning today. they will be warming up. in fact we're talking about more 60s later on this afternoon. as far as current numbers pretty chilly out there. in fact this morning is cooler than yesterday at this time. napa right now 39 degrees. san francisco 47. and livermore at last check reporting 40 degrees. here you can pick out the latest on the slight and still high clouds streaming into northern california. that includes the bay area of the clouds breaking up a bit as you work your way closer to monterey bay. here's the overall set up with the showers. the main shower ban is up to our north. as a result at least a chance of showers up toward eureka and crescent city for today and

funded through the end of september. reaction still coming into the plan president obama announced yesterday. that plan would reduce the federal deficit by $4 trillion over the next 12 years. one controversial proposal would repeal the bush era tax cuts to the wealthiest americans. that's something republicans strongly oppose. >> cannot afford one trillion dollars worth of tax cuts for every millionaire and billionaire in our society. >> we can't tax the very people we expect to reinvest in our economy and to create jobs. washington has a spending problem. not a revenue problem. >> the president also called for reforms to medicare and medicaid and he wants to cut defense spending and domestic programs. new poll suggests that most americans think the taxes they pay are fair. 54% of people surveyed said taxes are somewhat fair or very fair. 46% said they are unfair. vice president joe biden caught on camera apparently napping during the president's speech yesterday. take a look for yourself.

good thursday morning. time now 4:44. dry forecast for today. just a few high clouds moving in. it will be warm. we're talking more 60s this afternoon. the situation is getting worse for some homeowners near the sliding hillside in hercules. state and federal officials took a firsthand look at the problem area yesterday. they're trying to figure out if they can help residents. four home on carson street are red tagged, four others are restricted today use only. one homeowner tells us there's a new problem. >> parts of it starting to crumble and headed this direction. that's what's got me worried now. >> the hill is on land owned by a homeowner's association. it could cost millions to fix.

hearing on whether they'll receive assistance will take several weeks. bart will hold a special meeting to consider naming an interim general manager following a shake up at the top. her last day will be next friday. now rumors about her leaving have been rampant since february. that's when five board members vote today terminate her contract. that vote turned out to be illegal and was rescinded. now bart says it's made a deal that will pay her $958,000 to leave. that includes money to avoid any lawsuits stemming from that illegal vote. >> i'm mad that we're spending this kind of money to get rid of a good person. >> supporters credit her for two consecutive years of budget surpluses but she did come under fire for her handling of bart police after the fatal shooting of passenger officer grant. two men arrested during protest that followed the mesherle verdict now facing fines. that started peacefully but

quickly became violent. a 33-year-old oakland man and a 20-year-old castro valley man were among the dozens arrested that night. they now have to pay $25,000 each to the owner of a jewelry store they are accused of looting. the search is underway for the people who drove up to an ambulance and dropped off a victim before driving off. it happened just after 8:00 last night. police say paramedics were on an unrelated call on 17th international when a car pulled up. the people inside dropped off the shooting victim and left. the wounded man died later at the hospital. police are looking for the car which is described as a silver dodge daytona with tinted windows with a bullet hole on the driver side door. new details about what happened the night a 16-year- old high school sophomore was killed in san francisco. the body was found early sunday morning at a home. the two teens charged in the case appeared in court yesterday. prosecutors say the 15-year-old boy charged with murder shot

zang in the back of the head and called 18-year-old lee to get rid of the body. prosecutors say the two discussed dismembering the body but decided instead to burn it. neighbors called 911 after smelling gas. a friend of the family says they are devastated by death of their only son. >> they don't know those boys. they don't even recognize the defendant who appeared earlier. >> the 15-year-old did not enter a plea. the 18-year-old pleaded not guilty to a charge of accessory to murder after the fact. police in san francisco are investigating a bizarre incident at an adult bookstore. a man apparently set himself on fire. it happened last night at the bookstore on sixth and mission. an employee says the man was watching a movie in the back of the store when he came out screaming. the entire front of his body was on fire. paramedics treated him for serious burns. his current condition is not known. san francisco police are alts looking for the alleged members of the hells angel who is are suspected of attacking a man after a concert.

that attack happened on tuesday night near the war field theater on market street. the victim said he saw the attackers in the lobby. once outside they asked if he was a member of a rival mongol motorcycle gang. he said no but was beaten and stabbed possibly with a broken bottle. five men facing charges in connection to $35 million stealing chips. they stormed in wearing masks and carrying weapons. they are accused of tieing up workers and taking millions of dollars worth of flash memory chips. police believe more men were involved in that heist. >> there were an excess of 15 suspects involved in the robbery. there's still a large number of individuals out there who we need to identify and arrest. >> the five suspects are in custody and are due in court tomorrow. police say 98% of the chips were recovered. and many of those stolen chips were found in asia. time now 4:49.

governor brown is now getting the support of top state law enforcement officials for his plan to transfer thousands of inmates from state prisons to county jails. brown says it would be more cost effective in the long run to transfer low level offenders but it would take about $6 billion to make that change. many of the state's sheriffs, police chiefs, prosecutors and probation officers say they support the plan as long as the state provides adequate funding. new figures are out on the state of the housing market. but those numbers could be deceiving. reality track report that is foreclosures are down 35% from

the same time last year. bank repossessions also appear to be down by 17%. but analysts say those declines may largely be due to processing delays by lenders and say there are signs foreclosures are actually starting to creep back up. the f.a.a. is taking new safety measures to try to stop the ongoing problem of air traffic controllers sleeping on the job. the move comes after a traffic controller at the reno-tahoe airport fail today respond to calls from a medical helicopter forcing it to circle in the air for about 15 minutes. that employee is now accused of sleeping and now has been suspended. in the wake of the incident the f.a.a. is adding secondary traffic controllers to overnight shifts. waking up on the fair lawn islands. in just a few hours they're going to swim 30 miles from the islands to the golden gate bridge. they're going to be swimming in chilly waters often infested
