i'm tara moriarty live in san francisco where the barry bonds perjury trial is finally over. or is it? we'll tell you the prosecution and defense's next moves. firefighters watch as a blaze roars through a vallejo building. why they say they had no choice but to let it burn. what's happening at san francisco airport this morning that hasn't happened in more than ten years. i'm dave clark.

>> i'm claudine wong. mark is in today for steve. >> when you step outside this morning you will notice one change. it is much cooler out there. temperatures in the upper 30s to 40s. nice recovery this afternoon. most spots will be in the 60s with winds picking up out of the west around 20 miles an hour. sal standing by with an update on traffic. >> good morning, mark. right now westbound 92 san mateo bridge traffic looks good to highway 101 which is clear up and down the peninsula. there's also a crash southbound 280 clearing up blocking at least a couple of lanes. also this morning we're looking at san francisco. northbound 101 looks good approaching the downtown area. 6:01. back to the desk. all right. sal, thank you. a big fire in vallejo this morning. and firefighters are letting a vacant car dealership burn to the ground. fire started just before 1:00 yesterday afternoon inside the old bill lang cadillac dealership there on sonoma boulevard. the building is just too dangerous for firefighters to go inside there.

yesterday the roof collapsed in some places. firefighters say garbage and debris is three feet high. as many as 40 homeless people had been living inside that building. >> nobody wants to help us. where the heck are we supposed to go? >> fire investigators believe someone looking for scrap metal triggered that fire with a saw or small torch. ktvu's jade hernandez has been out there all morning. in about 30 minutes from now she'll have the very latest on what firefighters plan to do today. oakland police are investigating after a shooting victim was dropped off where paramedics were working on an unrelated case. it happened just after 8:00 last night. paramedics on 17th and international for an unrelated call when a car suddenly pulled up. the passengers inside dropped off this shooting victim and then drove off. the shooting victim later died at the hospital. police are searching for that car. it is a silver dodge daytona with tinted windows and bullet

hole on the driver side door. stanford police have released a new description of a man who broke into a graduate housing apartment and sexually assaulted a sleeping woman. investigators say he's a dark skinned man about 30 years old. 5'6" with a chubby build. he has wavy black hair and rounded nose. that attack took place on saturday night uncouple stock circle. police leave that the attacker got in through an unlocked door. time now 6:02. this morning now that there's a verdict lawyers on both sides of the barry bonds perjury case are already planning their next move. ktvu's tara moriarty is live outside the courthouse in san francisco to tell us what's going to happen next. good morning, tara. [ audio problems ] >> reporter: u.s. attorneys office has said it will try to decide as soon as possible whether or not it will retry bonds on those charges that the jury was deadlocked on. most analysts agree that a retrial is probably unlikely.

now yesterday bonds was smiling as he headed out of the courthouse. jurors found him guilty of one charge, obstruction of justice. they were hung on the three perjury charges but did come close to guilty on the injection charge 11-1. she was the hold out. >> i felt like i had reasonable enough doubt. >> reporter: that doubt reportedly centered on the credibility of kathy hoskins as a witness. analysts may be surprised because many predicted it might be her tearful testimony that might be the most damage to bonds. are no never played with bonds buzz had this to say. >> i wish him the best. he's a representative of san francisco giants and that of the major league fraternity. i do wish him the best on that. >> reporter: now some consider the government prosecution a witch hunt and a waste of taxpayer money. several jurors told us they

thought that the former slugger was guilty on all counts but that the prosecution could not prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. there was a lot of evidence that was not admitted. doping calendars, steroid screens and let's not forget greg anderson who refused to testify. bonds could face a two year prison term. most agree he'll most likely serve house arrest. coming up we'll talk about whether or not this guilty verdict could hurt bonds' chances of being in the hall of fame. live in san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. and on our channel 2 website you'll find out more about the barry bonds trial including getting a chance to hear more comments from the jurors in the case. that's at ktvu.com. time now 6:05. a few serial killer joseph naso is due back in court in two weeks to enter his plea. at one point he did look up and spotted a camera. you can see him there he covered his face. he is accused of killing four women in northern california

dating back to the 1970s. prosecutors have yet to decide if they are going to seek the death penalty. >> everything about the individual and background will have some bearing on what our ultimate decision is, yes. >> naso's arrest has drawn national attention because his alleged victims in northern california all have the same initials in their first and last names. authorities are also looking to the possibility that he's linked to the so-called double initial killings in the rochester, new york, area back in the early 70s. those crimes inspired a 2008 film called the alphabet killer. congress votes today on the compromised spending bill that overted a government shutdown last week. coming up at 6:15 we are going to have a live report from washington d.c. how today's vote is just the beginning of a larger budget battle. time now 6:06. pg&e says if it is force today reduce the pressure on natural gas pipelines, customers could be in danger. pg&e says dropping levels on certain pipes could lead to

uncontrolled outages. that could cause pilot lights to go out and natural gas could then seep into homes and businesses. state regulators are considering pressure reductions after pg&e failed to produce key safety records in the wake of that deadly san bruno gas pipeline disaster. meantime in a meeting later this morning the california public utilities commission is about to adopt an agreement designed to better monitor pg&e. it will call for the utility to provide a semi-annual safety report verifying how designated money is being spent on pipeline-related safety. after that san bruno fire and explosions, a lot of questions were raised about how pg&e prior advertised high risk projects. san francisco's international brand new terminal two is ready for passengers this morning. ktvu's kraig debro is live now at sfo where people are enjoying some of those renovations. hi, kraig. >> reporter: good morning,

claudine. not only the terminal's first day of operations today, but one of the airlines, virgin, is giving away some champagne with their flights and some cup cakes as well. virgin and america are flying out of here. the first flights leaving right now at 6:00. virgin flights. those are american flights. virgin flights leave in about an hour from now. nobody knows if it's going to make the airline traveling more efficient or enjoyable but certainly making one person feel good about flying and the city. >> i think it's beautiful. i'm really excited. i'm excited to be one of the first people flying out. i couldn't believe it i turned on the news this morning and couldn't believe it's opening today. it's a great thing for our city. really excited. >> reporter: terminal 2 has been closed since the year 2000 that's when the new international terminal opened. so eight years later in 2008sfo found more passengers flying out of here and needed a new

terminal and more room. eight years later here we are. for the people that worked here though they're saying this new terminal has some of the best and most user friendly equipment. >> i think we're all excited about the new flight. >> the new terminal. >> the new terminal is beautiful. so i'm just kind of looking around and -- >> you fly out of here before. >> for the workers we have them help pick out our area downstairs where they're going to be housed. we had them participate in what the look of the ticket counters would look like and the gates. >> reporter: also more than 30,000 square feet of retail space here. it's more than just an airline terminal. it's a place to come shopping as well. i talked to some of the people that worked here. one of the guys i talked to said he's worked everywhere. he says this is the best place equipment-wise to work in the whole united states. reporting live at sfo, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. all right.

sounds exciting. let's check in with sal. how are we doing? low key in our commute so far? we have some improvement, dave and claudine. the accident on 280 has been removed now. all lanes are opened and they have canceled the sig alert they had for the area. the accident was there for almost an hour. you still might see residual slowing but the good news is that all lanes are now open in daly city. move along traffic northbound 110 traffic looks good. for now i would still use 101 but pretty soon you could use either one. no problems on 280 coming into the downtown san francisco area or south of market area. and this morning' commute is okay on the westbound 92, san mateo bridge traffic looks good to 101. it's 6:10. go to mark. hi, sal. good morning to you. we have mostly cloudy skies.

points north overcast skies from santa rosa, concord and livermore and san jose. underneath the clouds temperatures are cooling quite a bit. in fact current numbers just updated. a few more 30s in napa and santa rosa. 38, 39 degrees. livermore at 39. oakland 47. san jose last check reporting mostly cloudy skies and lower 40s. for today scattered high clouds. tomorrow partly to mostly cloudy. the weekend we'll stick with that theme but temperatures there's a dominant trend showing up on the profile. we are warming into the weekend. high pressure rebuilds a bit but still have storm track just to our north and showers especially up to the north around eureka and crescent city, keep an eye on high clouds gradually pushing into the bay area. we have partly to mostly cloudy skies. and underneath this ridge we could have a few weak systems that move in that could generate a few sprinkles. slight chance for the north bay that will be for tomorrow morning and also into saturday

morning as well. for today we just have clouds to deal with and here's temperature forecast at 8:00 this morning mostly cloudy and chilly upper 30s to upper 40s. take this into the afternoon hours. scattered high clouds. 50s to right around 60. here's the eventual temperature range from the upper 50s to mid to upper 60s. partly cloudy and breezy this afternoon. here's a look at the numbers. showing you more 60s for san francisco, oakland and fremont will go 64 degrees. a's back home this evening and partly cloudy skies expected. temperatures first pitch right around 56 degrees. here is a look ahead sun-cloud mix will take us into the weekend. temperatures in the warmest locations right around the 70- degree mark. increase clouds again on monday that could increase shower chances into next week. another weather check in a few minutes. time now 6:12. a critical vote today on a plan to prevent a government shutdown. a live report from washington d.c. with reaction from both democrats and republicans. and for the second time in

welcome back. in washington the house votes today on the budget deal that prevented a government shutdown. but as ktvu's allison burns reports from our washington d.c. bureau, still hard to predict if it's going to pass.

allison. >> reporter: dave, there is still some drama about all this. there's been some murmuring around capitol hill that there still might be a slight chance for a government shutdown. house speaker john boehner has been struggling to get enough votes to pass the compromise that will fund the government for the rest of the year even though republicans won nearly $40 billion in budget cuts, a lot of them did not think it was enough. on the flip side some democrats think the cuts go too far. >> there are cuts in there i just don't like. why should you cut money from community health centers? why should you cut money from plans at the national institutes of health for cancer treatment for people? there is no sense in doing that in my book. >> reporter: but in his most recent comments speaker boehner has expressed confidence that he does have the votes to pass. we'll know for sure later today. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now is 6:16. and secretary of state hillary clinton is in germany today

meeting with other nato partners to assess the progress of the military effort in libya. this is video of clinton arriving in berlin. she's there to reassure nato that the u.s. will do its part to ensure the success. and pushing for more economic and political pressure on moe far gadafi to step down. italian prime minister not going to seek another term in office. the 74-year-old's prime minister's term ends in 2014. he says he would be willing to continue as an adviser but no longer wants to hold office. he's fighting legal battles. time now 6:17. tragedy at yale university. a student was killed in a freak accident. michelle default right here was killed in a university chemistry lab tuesday. her hair became entaminged in a piece of equipment. her family says she was about to graduate just next month with a degree in physics and

astronomy. the lab safety standards are now being reviewed. 6:17. oakland school district says hundreds of pink slip teachers will keep their jobs after all. more than 500 preliminary layoff notices were sent out last month. but the district tells oakland tribune that final notices will not go out to elementary school teachers. counselors along with middle school and high school teachers however are still waiting to learn if they are going to have jobs next school year. time now 6:17. the olive garden restaurant chain apologizing this morning after accidentally serving a toddler alcohol in one of its restaurants in florida. the mother of the 2-year-old says she ordered orange juice for her son but during the meal the waiter came back and told them there had been a mistake. that the juice was really sangria. the little boy taken to the hospital. he was treated for alcohol poisoning. olive garden's restaurant says it's changed the policy on the way alcoholic drinks are

served. in a similar incident a toddler accidentally served alcohol at an apple bee's restaurant in michigan. now the parents of that child are suing the restaurant chain. their attorney claims the restaurant had some other mix ups of alcohol in the past. similar case happened right here in the bay area four years ago. that's when a 2-year-old was served margarita mix in a sip cup from an antioch apple bee's. the restaurant says it is fully cooperating with that investigation. time now 6:18. and let's head right back out to sal who is watching contra costa county for us this morning. good morning, claudine and dave. that's right. we're going to start there on highway 24 westbound as you drive up to the tunnel. looks pretty good. also 680 nearby through walnut creek and concord looking very nice. highway 4 of course is slowing down already in antioch but for the most part it's just typical slowing if you drive that way every day you notice it back up through the main city of antioch. westbound bay bridge small delay there. no problems on the upper deck of the bay bridge so far.

on the freeway southbound 880 traffic looks good from hayward to union city and fremont. and if you're driving into the south bay so far so good with highway 17 already showing a little bit of sign of wear and tear on 17. 6:19 filling in for steve, it's mark. hi, sal. good morning to you. we have for the most part partly to mostly cloudy skies across the bay area right now. a nice quiet start. winds not too much of a factor. looks like may have a bit of a break in the wet weather for today. as far as the rain showers we have some activity really not here but up along the north coast closer to eureka and crescent city. basically we have the clouds in place as we switch over the mapping system here. latest satellite imagery we have basically mostly cloudy skies across a good portion of the bay area. some breaks in the clouds. and temperatures off to a cold start this morning. as far as current numbers you can see the upper 30s with napa and santa rosa 38, 39 degrees. san francisco 47. and livermore in the upper 30s at 39. into the afternoon hours still that scattered to high cloud

layer moving into the region. but that filtered sunshine effect temperatures mainly in the upper 50s to upper 60s. today will be warmer than yesterday. and look ahead your five-day forecast a sun-cloud mix will take us into the weekend. temperatures warming back up. in fact could be tracking a few more low 70s by saturday. there is a slight chance of a few sprinkles through one part of the bay area. coming up we'll have our forecast model break down the timing and one section of the full forecast in just a few minutes. 6:20. in business news the sony corporation is now considering a complete two week shut down in japan this summer. that drastic move is design today save electricity during the peak power periods during the hot months of the summer. the quake, tsunami and nuclear crisis already caused a huge electricity shortage across the region. women's rights are still in the red when it comes to equal pay for equal work. women earn 70% of their male counterparts what they earned in 2009. that's all according to reports

good morning. traffic is moving well on the san mateo bridge westbound 92. we'll tell you more about the morning commute and have another look at the weather just minutes ahead. time now is 6:24. the shooting of a mountain lion causing controversy in one neighborhood. a community meeting was held last night to discuss the growing number of sights. two weeks ago a mountain lion was killed after jumping a fence in a residential neighborhood. some say that use of deadly force was unnecessary. >> they're going to be scared. they're going to run to get away. >> the cat was deemed to be a public safety threat and

accordingly was removed. >> mountain lion sightings on the peninsula are not unusual. the state is distributing a dvd to police and sheriff agencies on procedures to follow if a mountain lion comes into a neighborhood. time now 6:25. a sigh of relief for bay area salmon fishermen after the most generous guidelines set in more than three years. fishermen can start catching starting may 1st. record declines in the salmon population and tough restrictions led to very difficult fishing seasons the past three years. this is travel day for the san francisco giants. they'll be playing the diamondbacks in arizona tomorrow night. the giants have now reached the 500 mark. they beat the dodgers last night at at&t park 4-3. now today is the home opener for the minor league san jose giants. the team will face the raw hide. first pitch 7:15. before that there's going to be a special tribute to bryan

stow, the san francisco giants fan brutally attacked at the dodgers opener. the team will also be collecting money this month to help the stow family. time now 6:26. the f.a.a. says it has had enough of air traffic controllers falling asleep on the job. new rules that take effect immediately after another controller caught asleep. >> reporter: and more than 12 hours after former car dealership goes up in flames, firefighters are still out here. we're live with the story straight ahead. also what residents near this sliding hillside are now waiting for. their situation goes from bad to worse.

opening this morning. we got some unexpected unemployment claims numbers that weren't what investors like to see. also new numbers in from the labor department. producer price index that measures price changes before they reach all of us rose .7% in march and that is down about a 1.5 from last month. we'll continue to watch numbers and keep you updated on how the markets react this morning. all right. we'll go ahead and smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on the ktvu morning news thursday april 14th. i'm dave clark. >> and i'm claudine wong. pam cook has the day off. time now 6:30. overnight vallejo firefighters have been monitoring a fire at a vacant car dealership. the fire started yesterday afternoon but it's still smoldering this morning inside the old cadillac dealership on sonoma boulevard. ktvu's jade hernandez has been out there all morning long. she has more on a group of homeless people who had been living inside that building. right, jade? >> reporter: that's absolutely right. we haven't seen a flare up for a couple of hours, but as you

mentioned smoke is still coming out from this former car dealership. what i did want to show you this morning is something you mentioned about 50 homeless people have been living inside when this fire broke out. this morning right over here some of their stuff. a few of these people did not want to talk to me about what they were going to do next but yesterday one woman spoke about her fears of the future. >> where are we going to go? this is the only place we're suppose today live. nobody wants to help us. where the heck are we supposed to go? >> reporter: vallejo firefighters were called to this building at 1:00 yesterday afternoon here in vallejo. it's the third fire here in three weeks. fire investigators believe someone this time may have been using a torch to cut metal out of the building. and what used to be the dealership's auto repair shop. hours after the fire was reported firefighters took these pictures. the building had become a

refuge of sorts for homeless people. firefighters found three feet of debris and trash in some parts of the dealership. that proved to be an obstacle for firefighters. the building could be torn down as early as tomorrow. a city code enforcement official told us the property owners here have been fined $20,000. fortunately no one was hurt in this fire. firefighters do believe that they evacuated all those living in the dealership in the area they were staying. firefighters still out here at this hour. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. we have new details this morning about the tragic events that occurred last weekend in san francisco when a 16-year- old high school sophomore was killed. the two teenagers charged in the case were in court yesterday. prosecutors say a 15-year-old boy charged with murder shot zeng in the back of the head and then called 18-year-old jimmy to help him get rid of

the body. prosecutors say the two talked about dismembering his body but decided instead to burn it. neighbors called 911 after smelling gas. a friend of the family says the family is devastated. >> they don't know those boys. they don't even recognize the defendant who appeared earlier. >> the 15-year-old had told the police the shooting was an accident while he and zeng were playing with a gun. he did not enter a plea. the 18-year-old pleaded not guilty to a charge of accessory to murder after the fact. this morning lawyers on both sides of the barry bonds case are already planning their next move. yesterday a jury in san francisco convicted baseball's all time home run leader of obstruction of justice. but it deadlocked on three perjury charges. prosecutors say they are going to decide pretty quickly whether or not to seek a retrial on those charges. and the defense is already planning their appeal. ktvu's tara moriarty will have more from outside the courthouse coming up at 6:45.

time now 6:33. the situation's getting worse right now for some of the homeowners near that sliding hillside in hercules. state and federal officials got a firsthand look at the problem yesterday. this is what they were looking at. they're trying to figure out if there's something they can do to help the residents. now four homes on carson street are red tagged. four others are restricted today use only. one of the residents though told us there's a new problem. >> parts of it are starting to crumble away and head in this direction. that's what's got me worried right now. >> the hill there is on land owned by a homeowners association. it could cost millions of dollars to fix it. federal officials say that a decision on whether homeowners will get federal help that will take several weeks. the bart board of directors is going to hold a special meeting today. they're going to consider naming an interim general manager now that there's been a shake up at the top. general manager turned in her

resignation yesterday. her last day will be next friday. rumors about her leaving have been rampant since february. that's when five board members voted to terminate her contract. that vote turned out to be illegal and was rescinded. but now bart says it's made a deal that will pay her $958,000 to leave. that does include money to avoid any lawsuits stemming from that illegal vote. >> i'm mad that we're spending this kind of money to get rid of a good person. >> supporters credit her for two consecutive years of budget surpluses, but she did come under fire for her handling of bart police after the fatal shooting of passenger oscar grant. time now 6:35. the f.a.a. is adding a secondary traffic controller to the midnight shifts at 27 airports all over the country. that's after yet another air traffic controller was found sleeping on the job. this time at the reno-tahoe airport. our reporter joining us live now getting reaction in washington d.c. >> reporter: yeah.

hi, dave. that's an airport that many of your viewers are probably familiar with if they've made that short flight from oakland to reno or perhaps the other direction. it's a small airport as you may know or if you've traveled in there. the airport authority there says normally you know the time of night when this last incident happened the traffic is very, very low. so this was early, early wednesday morning. the pilot of a medical flight which was coming in from mammoth lakes, california, called the air traffic control tower something like seven times to try and get hold of the controller. turns out the controller was asleep. and the f.a.a. says this person was asleep or out of communication for 16 minutes. the pilot was able to land the plane. had a sick patient on board. but luckily he landed the plane safely. of course this has the attention of the f.a.a. and also of nevada's senior senator harry reed who was also upset

about it. >> this shouldn't happen in nevada. shouldn't happen anywhere in our country. shouldn't happen in an airplane. and certainly shouldn't happen in an air ambulance. >> reporter: secretary of transportation basically identified 27 airports where they are adding an additional air traffic controller where currently there's only one during the midnight shift to try and stem these. there have been six of them by the way. one in washington d.c. another in tennessee in knoxville. and three at the same airport with the same control they are seattle. this is a problem that seems to be continually making the news this year. back to you, dave. all right. time now 6:37. things are moving smoothly at sfo's brand new terminal 2 this morning. the first flight just got in the air and this terminal is now officially open for business. it did take three years to remodel the terminal. it now has computer workstations with power out lets, restaurants, farmers market and several green

features. this latest model cost $383 million. >> very modern. very modern. looks like they put a lot of time and energy into the design. this is fabulous. makes us proud to be from san francisco. >> it's like futuristic. definitely modern. airport's getting a little kick now. >> the new terminal is home to american airlines and virgin atlantic. time now 6:37. check in with sal hawaii . what are you seeing on the roads now? i want to mention traffic will be busier coming into san francisco all of a sudden. it's not quite up to what it normally is. here it is about 6:38 or so or it is 6:38. traffic is going to be busy coming into the city. once on the bridge it looks okay. also this morning's commute is okay on northbound 101 in san francisco. that traffic is moving along very nicely. now if you are driving on interstate 80, we're showing you the h.o.v. lane extension project at about

7:00. in about 20 minutes they'll close the willow avenue offramp and demolish a section of that overcross there. that's what they're doing. they're extending the diamond lane t. work will run from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 today and tomorrow. so the eastbound 80 offramp at willow during that time will be shut down. and there will be some closures in the area. if you drive on willow in hercules, should be some delay. just be aware that's going on. at 6:38. let's go to mark. hi, sal. good morning to you. we're looking out across the bay. you can see overcast skies out there. that's what you're going to wake up to this morning off to a cold start as well. rainfall looks like a dry forecast today with the rain showers falling to the north of the bay area. cloudy live camera now a cloudy satellite. see the overcast skies from santa rosa down to san jose. we have some breaks in the overcast. underneath that pretty cold numbers. show you some of the current numbers in a little bit. scattered high clouds. partly to mostly cloudy. the weekend partly cloudy will be warmer.

good morning to you. welcome back. quick look at some top stories we're following for you right now at 6:44. in washington the house and senate are about to vote today on legislation that would cut $38 billion in spending from the rest of this budget year. that's part of the deal that was reached last week that kept the government from shutting down. new unemployment numbers just came out this morning

showing applications for jobless benefits jumped by 2700 last week. that is the first increase in three weeks. those numbers indicate some businesses are still having a hard time in healing the jobs market. and pg&e says customers could be in danger if it is ordered to reduce pressure on more natural gas pipelines. pg&e says reducing levels on certain pipes could lead to uncontrolled outages. the verdict may be in but it's not over yet for barry bonds. this morning lawyers on both sides are already planning their next move. ktvu's tara moriarty is live outside the courthouse now in san francisco with more on what happens next. tara. >> reporter: well, you know, there's nobody here anymore. it's kind of lonely out here in front of the courthouse. don't worry. bonds will be back may 20th for a hearing. meanwhile his defense attorney is trying to get the guilty verdict tossed out. the u.s. attorney's office is trying to figure out whether or not they'll try to retry bonds

on the counts the jury deadlocked on. most agree that is unlikely. bonds is all smiles as he exited the courthouse yesterday. jurors found him guilty of one charge, obstruction of justice. they were hung on the three perjury charges but did come close to guilty on the injection charge 11-1. now some consider the government prosecution a witch hunt and a waste of taxpayer money. but one juror told us that he hopes the guilty verdict sends a message. >> my daughter plays soccer. i wouldn't want my daughter out there competing against somebody that's on steroids or performance enhancing drugs. >> reporter: we also got reaction from the giants dugout. >> something we've been thinking about. hasn't been a distraction here. we've been focusing on our games here. i'm sure he's glad it's over. >> reporter: several jurors told us they thought the former
